EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: Better Than NAME IS EARL''
|
I am – Hercules!!
"Everybody Hates Chris," created by writers Chris Rock & Ali Leroi (“Down to Earth,” “Head of State”), about a teen Rock attending a mostly white school in 1982. It stars Tyler Williams as Rock (Rock himself lends narration), as well as Tichina Arnold (“Big Momma’s House”), Terry Crews (“White Chicks”), Tequan Richmond (“Ray”) and Vincent Martella (“Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo”).
It airs opposite “Survivor,” “The OC,” “Alias,” “Smallville” and “Joey.”
… a laugh-out-loud show capable of broadening the netlet's demographics … It's the parents, though, who steal the show. Rochelle (Tichina Arnold) is a riot, especially when it comes to scolding. And Julius, played by former NFL player Terry Crews, has an exacting presence, constantly reminding everyone how much everything costs and how wasteful they are. …
… fresh and appealing comedy … Race and class melt away in the presence of these relatable characters. …
… The show is not subversively funny or profane the way Mr. Rock's stand-up routines usually are. Instead, it is charming.
… "Everybody Hates Chris" is the first show in a long time centered on a teenager whose main problem is not adolescent angst, but real life. …
… the show thus far feels more observational than story-driven; it relies on our desire to listen to Rock talk. And we do want to listen, because Rock is hilarious; he has the great comedian's ability to infiltrate our minds, getting us to re-see the world through his eyes. What Rock and longtime writing partner Ali LeRoi have done, in the warmhearted pilot, is conjure a single-camera family sitcom that cannily voices Rock's tough-love attitude about ghetto childhood, the stuff he's been saying onstage for years, packaging it in a half-hour as tenderly amusing as "Annie Hall's" Alvy Singer recalling his childhood home underneath a Coney Island roller coaster.…
… Rarely does a show get everything so right so fast as "Everybody Hates Chris." Tonight's UPN pilot quickly sketches unforgettable personalities, a unique setting of place and time, and even a comic sensibility flush with both affection and attitude. This family half-hour is so funny, in fact, and so universally appealing that it can only make a jaded critic fear this might be as good as it gets. …
USA Today gives it four (out of four) stars and says:
… Like the show, the lessons are small. And like the show, they're true to life and heartfelt without becoming sentimental. This is the kind of comedy where parents prove they love their children by going to work every day and coming home every night. It is, in short, a show about real life, as seen through the eyes of one of the funniest men in America. …
… It’s the funniest, most heartfelt comedy about adolescent anxiety in years. Rock’s narration is biting yet affectionate, and the cast is just about perfect …
