Emmy-Winning Returnees For Monday!! MEDIUM!! ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!!

Published at:  Sep 19, 2005 3:35:54 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It lost this year’s prestigious Golden Globe to “Desperate Housewives” and this year’s outstanding comedy Emmy to “Everybody Loves Raymond,” but “Arrested Development” did win the comedy-writing Emmy – and it beat out “Joan of Arcadia,” “The Office,” “Will & Grace,” “Bernie Mac,” “Judging Amy” and “Eyes” in USA Today’s “Save Our Show” poll last spring.

And so it has been saved. Will Monday’s episode see the stunning Kitty (Judy Greer) leave Tobias for luscious Lindsay (Portia de Rossi)? A boy? Can dream!

The other big returnee on the Mt. Olympus radar Monday is “Medium,” which grabbed its own Emmy Sunday for Patricia Arquette’s lead performance. Its second season begins much as its first did, with the help of the Texas Rangers’ Capt. Push.

Bandwidth. Predictions. Reactions.

“Arrested Development”: 8 p.m. Monday. Fox.

“Medium”: 10 p.m. Monday. NBC.

Get this!! “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Complete Series,” the best TV series ever produced, WAS available for $239.99 new (or $199.99 used). But NOW you can pre-order all seven seasons brand new, including a never-before-issued 40th bonus disc,
for just $129.99!! That’s like all 144 hours for – what? – 90 cents per hour!! A better Christmukkah gift is unimaginable!!!

    by chastain-86

That show is shoddily-produced shit. There was a huge amount of buzz surrounding that show here in Phoenix, because the lead character is based on Miss Rita, a local psychic. Too bad the producers of the show shoot "Phoenix" and it looks exactly like Southern California. It's an hour flight from La La Land, you lazy bastards... you can't shoot your exteriors here in Arizona. Feh.

As far as I'm concerned this is the single best show on television, and I really couldn't be happier to see it back on the schedule. It doesn't matter what's going on tonight, at 8:00 my schedule is going to be cleared for som AD goodness. It sucks that they lost the Emmy, but they're back for a third season, so all is well and there's always next year.

Agreed that the production of the show is shotty but that does not change the fact that Patricia Arquette is very good in the role. She brings a certain believability to the role that most actresses could never do. She deserves the award as her performances are worth tuning in for.

the narration in television these days sucks, dead like me was cool enough to make up for the lame narration, but arrested development is not cool enough to make up for it, and neither is Veronica mars, if there was no narration on Veronica Mars it would be a much better show.

    by dijonase24

Before tonight I would have agreed with you. Now I couldn't disagree more. I don't know how it'll stand up as the anchor for the evening, but I think that pairing it with Kitchen Confidential is better than slapping it in the middle of their animation block. Not only was it a fantastic premiere for AD, but I have to say that Kitchen shows quite a bit of promise as well. I liked the tone and characters on Kitchen. It was funny and smart and didn't have a laugh track. More importantly, I think FOX may have finally found a show that fits with the style and tone of AD closely enough to follow it on the schedule.

re: foreignerbelt and the issue of tone

    by dijonase24

I don't know, foreignerbelt. I thought that the tone of the second season of AD was pretty close to that of the first season. It's just that things seemed to take place on a bigger scale. And did you really hate the second season? All of it? If not, what specifically did you hate? If I had to guess, I'd say more absurd and over the top things like Martin Short's Uncle Jack character and Buster losing his hand. But did you really hate episodes like Afternoon Delight and Good Grief? Even if you didn't like the slightly more absurd slant the show took at times, there was plenty of the same sarcastic wit of season 1 to go around. In fact, I'd argue that the show was stronger in the second season because it worked on more levels than the first season. There was a bit more broad physical comedy. There were more call backs that referred to jokes not only from previous episodes but from the previous season. Some of the situations became more outrageous. The best part was that all of that was layered on the same beautiful dry wit that the first season had. What, if anything, did you like about the second season?

well I toss 'hate' around a lot. but you were exactly right about the parts I didnt like. in fact, if I had to cite two things those-uncle jack and Buster's hand- would be the two. so again you're spot on. (stop camping out in my head.) yet I didnt think these more outrageous aspects of the show added to the dry wit that I love so well, but rather cheapened the show as a whole and therefore detracted from the intelligence it usually displays. I dont really like stupid wacky stuff- in fact, I would venture that not alot of people do. to clarify, I wouldnt consider Aquateen or Monty Python stupid, and zaniness just for the sake of zaniness is not funny. they can do better on this show, I've seen them- and they were back to their old form tonight.

    by jonquixote

Remember the pilot: as funny as the entire thing was, the pivotal moment was the little moment of truth & honesty between Michael and Lindsay. The more human the characters are, the funnier they are when they venture into idiocy. These days it's rare we get anything but idiocy. Still, absolutely hilarious, but I think they're in danger of lapsing into Will & Grace, Jack & Karen territory.

    More talk of tone

    by dijonase24

Yeah, I understood what you meant about the tone. I just took that and spun it into a season 1 vs season 2 conversation. I'm glad that you agree. As far as I can tell (and I admit that it is early), Kitchen may be the perfect partner for AD and this could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I also understand what your points regarding season 2, but I guess that I'm just going to have to disagree. While I do love the dry wit of AD I'm also a sucker for the more outrageous aspects of the show. That and I'd argue that the outrageousness was there in the first season as well. They just dialed it up a notch in the second season. The first season gave us things like the Maggie Lizer blind/not blind storyline and Tobias as a never-nude. Hell, my vote for the best episode of AD thus far would probably go to Pier Pressure, and that featured a one armed man that George employed to teach his kids elaborate lessons. I'm not saying that you're wrong, just that I have to disagree. I thought the absurdity of season 2 was beautiful and I hope it's around this season as well, though I will admit that if it keeps escalating the show is in danger of bursting at the seams.

I actually thought it was a step back...

    by el fuego

I liked both seasons of AD quite a bit, but this premiere seemed just a little weak compared to most of the past seasons' stuff. There were a couple brilliant moments(Maeby and Steve making out and Buster's explanation of the tape leap to mind) but on the whole it didn't seem quite as funny as the better parts of the earlier seasons. It was too all over the place in terms of scope and there wasn't enough interaction between the characters. I know they'll round up all the characters in the next episode or two, and they need to.

Kitchen Confidential was all right. Nothing great, but it made me chuckle at a couple points.

Prison Break continues to be good. The twist of the other lawyer guy being a pawn for the G-Men was unexpected and actually kinda cool. It's stuff like that they need more of if they want the show to be as good as 24.

and someone good to play Eve Holt. All in all - I was not disappointed with the premiere, just elated to have it back at all. They just need to reel it back into subtlety every once in a while - it seems in a mad dash to make it more palatable, it's become much more broad. "You are Uncle Oscar." "Dot com."

I completely agree, without just that tiniest bit of heart your empathy for the characters is totally mire in the "nuh he di'ANT!" school of comedy. You just don't care. I felt the show was going in the wrong direction when Michael started going down the same venal path as the rest of his family. The heart, right now, is George Michael and I'm afraid the writers in their zeal to be outre will make him unlikeable as well.

And I actually liked season two just as much as season one. Looks like they must have just given up on the idea of new viewers though, I can't imagine anyone tuning in tonight who hasn't seen the show before would have had much of a clue about a lot of stuff. Oh, and I loved Gob's interpretation of the statue (I met him at the park where that boy found the severed hand) Anyone else think there's actually going to be a boy that finds a severed hand this season, and that hand will be Buster's?

    Medium fried

    by mafu

The show "Medium" grabbed fairly high ratings, and now Patricia Arquette won the Emmy for Best Actress. Yuck. I loathe "Medium," both in concept and in execution. The writing is hackneyed and pedestrian, the plotting is weak and lacks imagination, and Patricia Arquette plays one of the most boring protagonists on television. Plus, the manner in which the show deals with spirits is just silly and humorless. I'm sure Patricia Arquette's character appeals to women, credulous religious types, and men chained to their wives, but she doesn't appeal to me. The reason Arquette won Best Actress is due to the high ratings from middle-America and the Bible Belt, not because she's any good. God, I hate "Medium." Please make it go away.

If the show does end up getting cancelled...

    by dijonase24

Then at least it had a good run, right? How many quality shows only get a handful of episodes before they're cancelled? If cancelled at least we can say that AD ran for three solid seasons. Hell, there are only 12 episodes of the Office (and the special, of course) and that doesn't take away from its greatness. I'd be more than happy with 50 or 60 amazing episodes following the lives of the Bluth family, especially now that I can own them all on DVD. That said, I'd much prefer it to run for many seasons to come, but unlike other rabid fans I understand that TV is a business and a show can't last on critical praise alone.

I'm still trying to figure out what your comments mean. Men chained to their wives? I like the show because the ghost stories are not over the top, horror movie-ish stuff, but very matter-of-fact and almost mundane, which is probably more realistic as far as psychics go (the legitimate ones, anyway. And no, I'm not interested in having another "there's no such thing as psychic phenomena" debate. You either believe it or you don't.) Anyway the show presents those circumstances within the context of one of the most realistic depictions of a functional married couple I've seen on television. They really love each other, but they're still deeply flawed and they screw up. Though I'm frankly surprised at how successful this show is. This is the kind of thing that usually flies under the radar and gets cancelled quickly, regardless of the quality. Anyone remember that short-lived NBC show about psychics, "The Others"? I thought that was a pretty good show but they barely showed half a season before it was axed. This second season will be a challenge to see if they can sustain it without repeating themselves. It's gotta be better than that Ghost Whisperer show - that one seems like it's "Touched By a Ghost" or something. I'm sure it'll just make me miss Joan of Arcadia, which was just getting interesting when they canceled it. But we'll see.

The rating were fucking pathetic. And you can't say they're not done everything possible to give it a chance. I think it's an interesting show. Not as brilliant or hilarious as some people would have you believe. The Howard voice-overs are cumbersome and grating to me. Still, it's not a bad show. I wonder why it never caught on? Strange.
