A Kentuckian views ELIZABETHTOWN!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a great review of ELIZABETHTOWN. What I really like about this review is the inclusion of the opinion of his wife. It's a great read! I can't wait to see this movie!!! Enjoy the review!
Hey Harry and gang. Last night we had the US premiere of Elizabethtown
right here in Kentucky where the movie was filmed. Actually the premiere
was at noon in the town of Elizabethtown (45 minutes south of Louisville)
but then Cameron Crowe and Orlando Bloom came up the highway and showed the
movie to two theaters full of fans and media in Louisville at 7.
First - how cool is Cameron Crowe? He premiered this movie in Kentucky
instead of New York or LA, he gave away free tickets to the premiere to
fans, AND he did a two hour autograph signing at a local record store before
the show. That shows the kind of fan appreciation that makes me like the
guy even more than I already did.
I thought we were watching the final cut of the movie (it seemed polished
and final) but in the paper this morning he said that this isn't the final
cut but that he wanted people here to see a "director's cut" that is "longer
and has more soul." Read the whole article
here.
I can only think of a few moments were the movie could use a trim, so I'm
not sure what's coming out before it hits theaters. I really liked the
movie in it's current form (just short of love) so I'm not sure he should
mess with it. My wife LOOOOOOOOOVED the movie in it's current form, so she
definitely thinks it should be left along.
Bias warning: A lot of this movie was shot in my hometown of Louisville (and
surrounding towns), and it was really cool to see places I know on screen,
so that might make me lean a bit more in favor of the movie, but I think I
can still give it a fair review.
Summary review if you're already bored with this article: I wouldn't put
this up on the pedestal that I place "Almost Famous," but it is a funny,
unique, emotionally strong movie that is definitely worth seeing.
The story: Orlando Bloom is Drew Baylor, a shoe designer who just designed a
shoe so awful that it might sink his entire company. Just as he sits down
to commit suicide, he gets a call telling him that his father died while
visiting family in Kentucky (his father's hometown). Drew is given the task
of going to Kentucky to retrieve his father and bring him back to Oregon
where they will spread his ashes at sea. Kirsten Dunst is the stewardess he
meets on the flight to Kentucky who gives him driving directions and her
phone number in case he gets lost. Once he reaches Elizabethtown, he is
confronted with dozens of his father's friends and family (whom Drew hardly
knows) who all have their own ideas about how he should be buried and
remembered. Through getting to know his roots, Drew gets to know himself.
And I don't wants to say any more because I think the movie should unfold
for itself.
The great: Orlando Bloom, Alec Baldwin (not much screen time, but he's
great), whoever the guy is who plays Chuck, the humor, the soundtrack (does
anyone incorporate music into a film better than Crowe?). Plus it just
feels like a Cameron Crowe movie, and that's a great feeling.
The less great but not awful: Kirsten Dunst (sorry Kirsten, you're hot and
all, but I thought you were a bit over the top at times - but not all the
time).
Favorite thing: The scene where Orlando and Kirsten have their first phone
call that lasts all night. Classic scene. Plus the fact that he doesn't
make Kentuckians look like a bunch of toothless cousin-fucking rednecks. He
shows us as the friendly, lovable (if fashion-challenged) people that we
are.
Biggest complaint: Mitch is Orlando's dad whose death sets things in motion.
But I never felt the LOSS that would seem to inspire the next two hours and
twenty minutes. I can't put my finger on the specific problem or how to fix
it. I think it might be the scene in the airport when Orlando is leaving
for Kentucky - his sister (Judy Greer) and his mom (Sarandon) are with him,
and for a family in grief, they sure don't act like it. Sarandon is already
planning the rest of her life as a widow - and her husband isn't even cold
yet. And when Orlando gets to Elizabethtown, everyone is acting like it's a
big party. This is the most tearless movie about a dead guy I've ever seen.
I know people grieve in their own way, but shouldn't someone be upset about
Mitch? I think the later emotional highs would be so much higher if we felt
the loss more.
Side note: my wife doesn't agree with this criticism at all. She
LOOOOOOOOOVED the movie. And she wants to buy the soundtrack.
So there is my two cents - I'm curious to see the final cut and see
everyone's reaction to it. Thumbs up from me (thumbs way up from my wife).

What are you talking about? I thought Cruise was EXCELLENT in Al

The novelty has worn off now. People should give it a rest. To me, this is Bloom's maker-or-break movie as far as public perception goes. He will always have parts playing pretty, but can he act? Sounds like he might be able to. Crowe is a favorite of mine and if this movie can even being to approach 'Almost Famous' well, that would be something.

So I'll check this out.

...god,the girl is spankable.Fuck having to sit through this glib shit with the elf who cant act,I'm waiting for Marie Antoinette where The Dunst is bound to get nekkid as its,like....y'know...ARTISTIC and stuff.God I'd worship her little snaggle teeth and spank thjat botty red raw like a pair of cox's pippins.PHWOOOOOOOOAR!!And she'd probably have gear on her too...shag the shit outta me then roll me a fatty.Arguably she'd not share her beer though.....I wonder...is she a screamer or a back scratcher.Hmmm.God I love the Dunst.Dirty and boss eyed. The way I like 'em.Oh yeah,Harry...kill that aquafag thing. It's not even interesting now.You got people talking about their dogs.End it.What was I ...The Dunst?God,I'd spank the SHE-IT outta that little cheeky bum...

I had to dump Johansson for doing that too much,it fucking stank of cabbage.I have a horrible feeling Dunsty farts like a trouper.I may not be able to handle that.Never tell a girl you don't like them farting, they insist on doing it to annoy you.Usually as you're cumming.I kept waqking up with Scarlett on my face(usually a happy memory) but she kept farting and farting. The time she took a fucking match and singed the duvet waa the last straw. It wasn't as bad as Denise Crosby though, she used to lift a leg and squeeze the cheese...it was over when she fol, lowed through one day.The vision of the girl you love walking like a gorilla covered in her own faeces ias the point you question your faith.Just because a girl gives good head is not a reason to be responsible for washing her shit stained panties.Oh,Scarlett....how you disappointed me....the fucking stink. It remindsme of Heather Graham.God,she was hot.But the night she farted in my pint glass as I got her a beer from the fridge....it haunts me now.Girls who break wind are sadistic. And why does it ALWAYS stink so bad?I'm hoping the Dunst doesnt do it too much but Donnie Darko was interviewed in Vanity Fair proclaiming how he hated how Kirsten's farts stunk."Like the local tramps dog turds?" was the quote.I'm keepin' my fingers crossed.

Like all 13 year olds you have finally found AICN...now please go away.

I'm confused. Does Crowe then want a general release that is "shorter and less soul?" The problem I have with calling something the Director's Cut is that directors should only be releasing the film they want the people to see (if they have final cut that is), that is his/her Director's Cut. Anything else is just deleted scenes. Didn't this whole Director's Cut business come along with Blade Runner several years ago when it rereleased? Now it's just become a marketing ploy for selling dvd's.

How about "Planty McPlant-Feet...?"

and really don't give a shit about any kind of movie made here. Boring little horse loving state with some cocky ass bronx born bastard coaching our college basketball team is about all its known for. Biggest thing that happens round here is the damn Derby, and ITS BORING AS FUCK. Stupid old bags wearing those ridiculous hats and shit with two minutes of a bunch of midgets riding horses halfway round a track. How truly bad is my old Kentucky home? Its got Indiana on top of it. NOW THATS BAD! But hey, at least it ain't horrible. Like say Texas, or worse......Florida.
-
That's really what this is. Thank you for your book on Billy Wilder and three of your first four movies, now go away.

In case anyone's wondering, which they won't be because this is a motherfucking AICN talkback, I'm only kidding around with that comment. I admit, I'm such an immature douche, but that's a requisite here, right? I like Kirsten Dunst. In fact, I'd go as far as say that I might see this just because she's in it. She really awakens my cock in ways that many young supposedly 'hot' actresses/whores don't. There's just something sexual about her that makes me feel like I'm 13 again...oh hang on, I am 13...no I'm not, I mean I have the mental age of 13, which again is a prerequisite for visiting these wonderful pages.......no, seriously I love her. Watching Eternal Sunshine I just wanted to be doing her doggie like Billy-Bob going apeshit crazy on Halle Berry's ass in Monster's Ball (there's a 'graphic' sex scene in that movie, don't you know). In fact, Eternal Sunshine was just a full-on masturbatory experience for me, with Kate Winslet being another of my favourite ladies and I'm a huge Carrey fan (not huge as in I get a huge one over him, just that The Cable Guy is an underrated movie directed by Stiller), and Tom Wilkinson is one of my favourite actors. Anyway...I've just realized Orlando 'could have done with a few more years at acting school' Bloom is in this so I won't be seeing it after all, never mind. I'll rent the DVD so I can spray my load on Kirsten.

The director is in the audience and kiss asses all over, you think the audience are gonna hate the fucking thing?

A friend of mine is a reviewer for one of the local Alt-Press mags (The LEO) and was invited to the premier at the Showcase Cinemas Preston 16 where this thing had the 7pm showing. Upon arrival the PR firm behind the film stated that no one in the press would be allowed to publish their review of the film for four weeks. Excuse me, but did he say I coulnd't publish my opinion for four weeks, under threat of future blacklisting for motion picture events? Uh-Oh...it dosen't bode well for a film when the PR firm dosen't want advanced reviews coming out. I am soo looking forward to this movie (and seeing my once-hometown up on the screen) but all of a sudden I am smelling a turd. Beware, PR Firms....don't piss off my boy Paul K...he's write you a new one!!!!
