Wanna see who won that HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE contest'

Published at:  Sep 13, 2005 3:25:33 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the winners of the HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY contest I ran a couple weeks ago. A quick refresher: The contest was to come up with presidential promotional posters to help Zaphod Beeblebrox get elected as President of the Galaxy. Thanks to all who entered! Now we have the results!

In third place, winning the set of Douglas Adams books is Nils Cordes from Germany. I liked this poster because of the way he combined the film with the TV show. The X on Beeblebrox is pretty inventive, too.

In Second place, winning the DVD autographed by Mos Def is the most Douglas Adamsy of the winners, from a dude calling himself Timbrewolf. I liked this one because the colors jumped out and didn't seem cheaply done. The biggest reason this made it in is because of all that little writing underneath the poster and the inclusion of Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters on the bumper sticker! The humor is witty and dry. Very Adams.

And the bumper sticker:

And the first place winner, who gets the Towel signed by Ford Prefect is a guy by the name of Andy. I loved this poster because it was completely different than most of the entries. It jumped out at me as being very geeky cool and a Kubrick reference is always welcomed. I don't know about anybody else, but I love the simplicity of the image. It's something Zaphod would do, knowing what the space baby represents. It's certainly a nod to his healthy ego! Enjoy!

Thanks to all who entered! It was fun looking at what you created! See ya' on the next one!

Seems like these entries were posted in the wrong order. That first one is excellent!

without reading the text, i figured the first one had one...it was the funniest to me...and who cares if kubrick is referenced? oh well, whatever

The competition wasn't judged on how good the entrant's skills on photoshop were.

    Quint, you goofed it

    by vynson

By your own criteria for the contest, the one in first place should not have won. Your fondness of Kubrick or 2010 doesn't translate into getting geeked over H2G2.

    I'm sorry

    by atari

But the last one should not have won first place. Honorable mention, yes, but a contest winner, no. It does not look like an election poster, it looks like a movie poster. I'm sorry to say this Quint, but you got it wrong.

Yep, you got the order wrong

    by mortsleam

Andy from Germany should've won. While I like the inclusion of the second head on the space baby (truly more in the spirit of the books than the movie), it would've been much funnier if Zaphod's (Sam Rockwell's) actual face had been plastered onto the space baby. It would have been more fitting to Zaphod's ego.

    wow. contests here suck

    by miserableraingod

The first place winner sucked. Well, not sucked, but it did not meet the criteria that Quint said the entries would be judged on. So it shouldn't have won. But seriously, when was the last time we saw a contest at this site that didn't get fucked up somehow, or judged poorly, or whatever.

    Huh?

    by hairy nutsack

Wasn't Zaphod trying to hide the fact that he had two heads in the movie, am I remembering this correctly? If so, then why in hell would he put a two-headed baby on his campaign poster? And since when did Zaphod care enough about Earth to include an Earth film reference in his campaign poster? He blew Earth up without a second thought but he's a fan of our cinema? And what the bloody hell does 2001 have to do with HGTG in the first place? Bad entry, bad choice for winner. 2600AD got it right, the lens flare effect bedazzled Quint into thinking there was some quality to be had here.

Do you know were your towel's at?

    by occamsmolnkey

I do. Because I understand that this isn't a photoshop site. This is a site of geeks, run by geeks. Give your customers what they want. A 2 minute photoshop with a lens flare took first place because this isn't Something Awful or Worth 1000. This is Ain't It Cool. Take a look at the fonts on this site for crying out loud. Everyone can continue whining (I have to say, I'm a little surprised myself), but I won't let it bother me. I have a new autographed towel to wipe away the tears.

    My pick

    by darthcorleone

Second place was the best. Nothing wrong with the third one...but when you acknowledge the second is in the spirit of Adams (which it most decidely is), giving it to a Kubrick reference doesn't make much sense to me. Oh, well. To each his own.

    No way

    by jinxo

I agree. Those rankings are ass backwards. I will give that first place looks nice but that's all. First of all, its BORING. 2001/2010 imagery but with a two headed baby. Whatever. As to this actually being the sort of poster Zaphod would create and use... are you out of your mind??? That poster is tasteful and, again, boring. Zaphod is neither of those things. Zaphod raised flaymboyance and tacky behavior to the level of being an arrestable offense. Finally Zaphod is vane as hell! No way he would create a poster without a giant self aggrandizing picture of himself on it. Something that would woo the ladies and, more importantly, woo himself. A poster with a picture of himself as a two headed fetus? He would tear that to shreds. THAT is the poster Arthur Dent would have created and that would have caused Zaphod to throw him out an airlock.

I didn't really expect to win with this, just wanted to have fun with it, and that's what happened: ( http://tinyurl.com/7k8r8 )

So, let's see some of the other entries guys. I'm curious what else got beat out by the lens-flare fetus. :D

    Attention Earthlings

    by timbrewolf

Cheap or not, right or wrong, it was a blast (yes, bad pun intended). It's always nice to have a contest like this that allows us all to do something that wouldn't be done for any reason. I mean, come on, who actually sits around making campaign posters for President of the Galaxy. How geeky is THAT?!

Well, I guess I did. But that's not the point!

Big "super happy karma" to Quint and the gang for the contest (and for picking me for second place). Thanks to all the fish that sent kind words on mine.

And for all those who don't agree, make your own contest. Give your own prizes and judge yourself. What do you think this is? American Idol?

    American Idol?

    by hairy nutsack

At least with American Idol more than one person gets to decide what cheezy-ass entrant wins anything.....Speaking of Something Awful, did anyone else catch the PayPal/United Way drama that went on there last week?

Yeah, I'm with alot of other talkbackers here...

    by the killer-goat

The first poster was the best, hands down, it's just tacky enough to be Zaphod's kind of presentation. Photoshopping has nothing to do with delivering a good message, lots of people can make a pretty picture of directionless imagery, but the top one has the best delivery for representing a smug, smarmy, and shallow candidate for President of the Galaxy. Bam, message delivered with all the subtlety of a hockey puck in the face. Very appropriate to Zaphod's personality. The Kubrik poster decided to throw in some kind of deeper message, maybe, a "look to your future" kinda thing. That ain't Zaphod. And as far as being "geeky" enough: wouldn't the top one also beat out the Kubrik poster simply for including the character from the film in question? I mean, that WAS the point, right?

The winner was kind of a bullshot.

    by the pusher

It's not funny, it's not even particularly Guide-ish. It more looks like something Humma Kavula would have done. Besides, I doubt Zaphod would've even had a Consortium to help elect him president.

    damn

    by obscura

if shite like that can win, i wish i would have entered! i see so much bad photoshop work (im a graphic designer) and this is really REALLY not worth the top prize when you've got people creating everything themselves. its unoriginal, its a collection off images from google and a filter over the top. id get thrown off my course if i handed in work like that. nothing can be done about it now, and there would always be negative feedback on a comp like this, but seriously, you got it wrong!!!!!
