    The wizards at HBO programming

    by chickengeorgevii

Yep...I believe it.....just like I believe they will cancel Carnivale (and resuse to sell the rights over to Sci-Fi Channel so they could keep it going) and believe they are wisely spending their production costs on more shows about celebrities like oh...Extras, The Comeback, Curb, Unscripted, The Larry Sanders Show, Arliss, Entourage....And thus, am I missing anything? - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

I really dig "Rome" so far, but I'm curious...

    by smarkjobber

...isn't the budget much bigger than the recently-axed "Carnivale"? I thought HBO's reasoning behind the cancelation was due to the cost. I do like "Rome," but if I had to choose, I'd rather HBO shiv the second season and throw the bucks at a "Carnivale" mini, just for some fucking closure.

    Carnivale

    by optimus122

Was great , real interesting and the rating near the end were almost up to Deadwood levels and it still got canned. Rome's first season at least is also being paid for by another company besides HBO from what I am told so it makes sense if its doing well ratings wise that they would bring it back.

lands a second season in two years. If it weren't for "Curb," HBO would be DOA.

    stop complaining about carnivale

    by fried samurai

The creators tried to drag it out for 4 seasons. The first season moved at a snails pace(mind you i'm a Twin Peaks fan).Apparently someone at the top warned them.Notice how quick the 2nd season progressed thats because they knew they'd be cancelled. The Wire,Deadwood and The Sopranos are all better shows.Yes we need a good thought provoking sci fi/horror show on HBO.But Carnivale wasn't it.They had their chance and blew it.

Rome is like a brain massage...

    by 0101010

Just like Deadwood, this is a show that actually has a script worth listening to, portrayed by actors worth watching. I admit it's sort of like listening to 40 minutes of the Yankton politics from Deadwood, but I'd rather have to hit the rewind button on the TiVo to really dig what someone just said, rather than sit there in a bored stupor as more trite dialog is poured like so much offal out of the speakers. I haven't found it boring in the slightest. I particularly enjoy the depictions of Roman religion (see Luscius' prayer to Venus from this past Sunday, particularly well written and acted). I mean, who on these boards couldn't like the "ok whose going to kill who in what order when the mob breaks down our front door" scene??? Or the look on Titus Pullo's face as he pulls off the covers and looks in the chests on the back of the cart? Besides, these are merely the first three episodes, from whence, apparently, the production crew took a several months long break to rework what they didn't like and then continue production. Gimme Gimme Gimme more is all I can say.

    by optimus122

I think I'll stick to complaining about the killing of a great show instead of taking the advice of some moron on this forum. Carnivale's ratings for its series finale were almost the same as Deadwoods ratings , HBO just lost it's edge is all..if that other company wasn't helping them pay for Rome it would also be cancelled as its ratings are far from stellar.

    by chickychow

Just not into the characters. The most interesting is the jerky Marc Antony and he's not given much screen time, yet. It just feels like the show desperately wants to be Sopranos/Deadwood in Rome and so far its not pulling it off. Me thinks if I'm not really into the next ep, I'm pulling the plug myself...

100 million dollar budget and they dont even wait for the first week dvd sales for reassurance? oh well, its all a marketing gimmick for the station anyway. all the posters and theatrical trailers for their shows. and a damn good gimmick too! either way, im a happy boy since i like the show.

    Rome is intelligent and fun

    by isobel

Any series that has smart writing and excellent acting automatically gets my vote. The gorgeous costumes and lavish production design are the icing on the cake. I also adore the characters, particularly Polly Walker's Atia and Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd as Lucius Verenus and Titus Pollo. Each episode has been better than the last and I am hooked.

As to Carnivale, I personally found it dull as ditchwater. It suffered from poor casting and wildly variable acting, a disagreeable and morose lead who I felt like slapping every time I saw him and a plot that Stephen King could have scribbled in his sleep. About the only thing I enjoyed was the performance of the actor who played the evil preacher, who was skilfull enough to sometimes overcome his dreadful script.

    by fried samurai

Dont think so.The Wire's ratings werent stellar but HBO knows a quality show when it sees one.And there is no other company backing it up like Rome. While not expensive as Carnivale,THE WIRE isnt that cheap. There's more than enough sci fi/horror shows coming this fall thanks to LOST.I'm sure most of you "morons" who cant appreciate good writing will find something to whack off too.

Carnivale was great...but so can be Rome

    by pegase

Can we stop putting one show against another, especially as they have very little in common apart from being on the same channel!
I loved and miss Carnivale, but I'm enjoying Rome too.
And yes, someone else than HBO is paying: me, along with the other 20 milions UK TV-licence payers...and it hasn't even started showing here!
Besides, a big part of the $100 million cost was the sets, so the 2nd season will be much cheaper to do, would be stupid not to.
Finally, I'm sure the decision is not only to do with ratings but with the ability to sell the show to overseas market, and in that respect I guess it has a bigger potential than Carnivale (which for example was never shown on terrestrial UK)

    Surprised but delighted.

    by fluffyunbound

I assumed this show was too expensive to be renewed. I spent the last year reading about its production and mentally preparing myself to hate the shit out of it, but it has completely won me over. I am willing to overlook the fact that a little too much history seems to depend on Titus - we'll just chalk that up to dramatic license and the "it's a small world" phenomenon that arises when you examine who served with whom in the Roman military during the first century BC and AD. I am completely pumped. After BSG this is the show I most want to see continue. I never watched Carnivale - like, not a single minute of a single episode - so I can't miss it. I also don't think it's valid to look at it as if the network has "traded" one show for another - Rome was in production long before Carnivale was cancelled.

    OK

    by optimus122

If they know a quality show when they see one they wouldn't have cancelled Carnivale right? Also if they know about quality why add that ridiculous show The Comeback to the lineup? Or unscripted? I like Rome , just i'm pissed Carnivale got booted even after they recieved an avalanche of mail and phone calls asking for it not to be killed by there subscribers , in fact there was so much mail and calls that Chris Albrecht who is in charge of making these decisions was shocked by how many fans there are.I like HBO don't get me wrong , they still have good shows there as I do love The Wire and The Sopranos and Rome is good too it just sucks to lose a real good show that I really looked foward to every week.

They kind of had to renew this

    by eg4190

That $100 million mostly went into constructing all those huge, elaborate sets. The second season wouldn't cost anywhere near that much. If they just did the one season, they'd never recoup their earnings from one DVD box set. Future seasons of Carnivale would've been more expensive because every week necessitated different special effects and locations.

    Good News

    by _maltheus_

I like this show. I look forward to it. But it's a bit too sensational and it hasn't yet grabbed me like Sopranos / Carnivale / Deadwood (the Wire comes across as just another lame-ass cop show to me). Deadwood took a little time for me to get into, but I could see early on that it would pay off if I merely devoted a little time to it. Rome is....well, it's the only new show worth watching this year. This is the worst year for new TV in my 32 years on this planet. I'm happy to just have something. I shouldn't talk like that, it's a very good show, it just doesn't make me salivate. By the third episode of Carnivale, I was very hooked and scared that it wouldn't survive to a second season because it had edge (to borrow from another poster). I don't pay $12/month for stupid movies, I pay them for the original shows. If they want to go bland like network TV, then I'll go back to network TV since it's free. Yeah, yeah, full frontal and whatever, these don't make for edgy TV anymore than Deadwood is just about the cursing. Plus porn is free these days anyway, so big deal there. Networks always use to bitch that they'd have hits too if they could curse like the Sopranos. Dumbasses! I'm a little worried that those network execs might now be running the show at HBO. At least they aren't Showtime, I just finished Dead Like Me on DVD and I'm shocked that it didn't get renewed, it's freakin' great. I had cancelled my Showtime before this show came out, because they cancelled all of their other shows before then. Why isn't it like a light going on, to these network execs, that show A is good and show B sucks balls? I know there is a divergeance of opinions on this BB, but at least everyone knows what the fanatical following shows are. I think the Wire sucks ass, but I wouldn't cancel it because it's clear that a reasonably-sized group of people are passionate about it. That's a winner. One person mentioned Curb your Enthusiasm and despite yours, the consensus is that show is a loser. In any case, I'm glad to hear that Rome got renewed, but the fact that it isn't coming back until 2007 has me worried. I like the Sopranos, but I have visceral hatred for it too because of these years between seasons. If you can't keep a show on without taking a year or two off between seasons, then cancel you dumbass self already. I can't decide to take 6 months off from work and neither should you. Fucking spoiled Hollywood producers! If those lazy fucks don't care enough about their shows then why should I? Perhaps it's a little late to be planning a 2006 second season, I just hope it won't become their standard operating procedure.

    Spin the dial

    by isobel

The multi-Emmy-winning CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM a loser? It is a massive success; the reason it's not talked about on these boards more is due to it being aimed at an older demographic than the average AICNer. Ricky Gervais' EXTRAS, scheduled to debut alongside the new season of CURB later this month, will get a lot more attention here.

As for the delay in airing fresh seasons HBO are in the happy position of not having to sell cars and cornflakes during station breaks and so they spend time on their shows and scripts. I'd rather wait for a fliet minon than get a Big Mac takeout.

    Come on, Curb is great...

    by bralli

Curb is great, how can you not like that show? I have to admit, I really digging Rome. How can you not like that "dude who always plays the Russian dude" as Caesar. How can you not like "that chick from Patriot Games" as Atia. And "that AIDS dude from Trainspotting" is great, especially that look on his face when he sees his wife holding that newborn baby... MINOR SPOILER! Check your history, Marc Antony will eventually marry Octavia (Atia's daughter) and remember that Octavius is none other than Caesar Augustus. I wonder if they will work Cleopatra or even Jesus Christ into the storyline (I think the date is too far off for Jesus).

Whoever mentioned the Yankton stuff was spot on

    by kuryakin

The first episode was kind of hit & miss but the second episode really grabbed me and the end of the third one really made me want more. There is a lot of "Yankton" style stuff where you go - "What just happened?" but it's worth it to really enjoy a good story. Let's not forget that the Sopranos does the same thing, introduces a character or storyline and then leaves it/them for a season and expects you to remember what's happened and why. The Wire as well - the first few episodes were really hard going. HBO makes TV that is certainly challenging but it's a challenge that really pays off for the viewer. And if you're being cynical, you could say it pays off for them too if people buy the DVDs to go back over the story at their own pace

    Rome Wins! Rome Wins Again!

    by windytw

I have this nasty tendency to compare shows to other shows they most resemble. Comparing the loss of Carnivale to renewal of Rome is rather silly. Rome is much more like the Sopranos, but you're smart folks, you can figure that out. I like Rome, and I like the dual nature of the show; showing the foibles of only the upper class has its appeal (I, Claudius) but by now we do want to see some of the grit and grime in the streets, as it were (Deadwood). Minus the boring parts of either show, natch.

Carnivale was cancelled for the simple reason

    by gheorghe zamfir

No one was watching it. And lets not rag on HBO, its not they thoughtlessy canned the show. With the way the ratings plummeted during the first season most networks wouldn't have even bothered finishing the season, HBO not only finished the first season, but gave it a whole nother season to try and earn an audience, but the ratings just continued to be lousy. It wasn't only failing to gain an audience, it was failing to even keep the people who WERE watching it - and finales are typically a shows highest rated for the season, so there being a slight uptick at the end of Carnivale's run that ALMOST earned as many viewers as an average episode of Deadwood isn't a bragging point.

    Rome, The Wire, Carnivale, Deadwood

    by hargon27

I like Rome, its off to a slow start, but then all of HBOs better shows begin that way.
Im actually suprised that HBO renewed The Wire for a 4th season. Often new episodes of The Wire received ratings lower than the rerun Real Sex that immdieatly followed it on Sunday night. The Wire is without a doubt my favorite show and yet I was kinda hoping they wouldnt renew it. All the loose plot threads were neatly tied up at the end of Season 3. I dont see how Season 4 can start back over or have the same resonance of Season 3.
As for Carnivale, the ratings for it blew. One of the previous posters mentioned the folks behind this show dropped the ball by dragging it out to slowly in the first season and he was right. I only watched 4 episodes of the show until I couldnt take anymore. The show was a period piece, that's what made it too expensive and thats why it was cancelled.
Was anyone else bored to tears with Deadwood's 2nd season? It seemed all the writers got bored typing "cocksucker" every 2 sentences and instead decided to use these grandiose monologues that went on for minutes at a time.
