Ain't It Cool News (

Got Showtime? A Friend With Showtime? WEEDS Marathon Saturday!!

I am – Hercules!!

If “Weeds” was a new fall show, it would be my favorite new fall show of the coming season. It is smart and funny and has pithy things to say about the way we think and live. I actually find myself craving new installments. I don’t believe there’s ever been a Showtime series that made me say that before.

Mary Louise Parker is no teenager, but her doob-dealing soccer-mom character is the kind of funny/sad heroine-of-the-suburbs who wouldn’t seem too much out of place in Neptune, Sunnydale or Stars Hollow. About a dozen major characters wobble about in her orbit, and I don’t think there’s one I don’t find entertaining.

I’m excited, then, to point out that Showtime is on Saturday colorcasting the series’ first five episodes, starting at 8 p.m.

Veronica Mars: The Complete First Season streets Oct. 11.

Look! Were Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader two different people in the early drafts of “The Empire Strikes Back”? All is revealed in The Annotated Screenplays (Star Wars, Episodes IV-VI)!!

Look! The comic book Joss Whedon wants to see on TV: Global Frequency Vol. 1 and Global Frequency Vol. 2!!

Look! Original casting tapes! Deleted scenes!
Audio commentaries! Clips from March’s “Lost” Paley Event!
Lost: The Complete First Season on DVD!!

this show is a lot like Dead Like Me. Funny as hell, but also kind of heartbreaking. I adore Mary Louise Parker. Best new show so far.

i was sceptical at first about this

    by Krangelus

but it is actually really quite good. give it a few episodes & you'll be hooked.

    I too was boycotting Showtime...

    by zer0cool2k2

For their harsh treatment of Dead Like Me. (Well, not that harsh, since they did give it a second season, and still repeat it). But, they sucked me back in by airing Reefer Madness, starring the tasty Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars herself). I never got around to cancelling Showtime again, so I gave Weeds a try, expecting it to be another mediocre Showtime series, this time featuring heterosexuals. Fortunately, I was wrong. While Weeds is about heterosexuals for the most part, is is far from mediocre. If Showtome had only managed to keep DLM around, they might have had a decent night of television.

    DLM season 2

    by idledead

I own season 1 on DVD and love it, but have never gotten around to buying season 2. Is it of high quality as well? P.S. Mary Louise Parker is the worlds greatest MILF.

Wyrdy - that had been killing me as well. And Tonay -- 1) Dead Like Me was from the same guy who created Wonderfalls (w/ Tim Minear), 2) Don't be such a dick all the time.

    DLM and Weeds

    by violetparr

I too was planning on boycotting Showtime cause of their idiotic move cancelling dead like me. but weeds is so good, that they won me over again. and yes, idledead, pick up DLM season two. the show only got better as it went along, and, even though we'll never see a season three, season two was damn satisfying, especially on second viewing.

If it's the same song I'm thinking of ("and they're all made out of ticky tacky") Pete Seeger sang it too. I guess it was inspired by those weird little pink and blue and yellow houses on a hill in san francisco ( saw them driving from Palo Alto into the city once...I was driving, they were on the hill) Gotta be the same tune because now it's lodged in my head pretty well too.

Terrific Show, With One Quirk (Worry?)

    by emvan

They do seem to be rushing through plotlines as if some asteroid were approaching Earth. **** SPOILERS **** The very interesting kid's girlfriend character is jetissoned after one ep, Justin Kirk's troublesome brother-in-law character is introduced in ep 3 when SOP would be to save him for the middle or even end of the season, one week we have the rift between best friend Elizabeth Perkins and her overweight kid, the next week it's Perkins' character having cancer. In fact, the pace of these subplots is so reckless I suspect it's part of the show's design. So many subplots dangling, it's either going to end up unsatisfying or (one hopes) all come together gloriously.

I am hooked after a mini marathon when I watched every ep On Dem

Good shit. It's about time Parker wasnt a victim or dying patient or some weak character. great show. i just hate her brother. and why are the black people a little too cartoonish? still a great show.

I found myself laughing quite often, but the black family is just painfully written. While I admit I'm not ghetto black (I'm from the burbs) I can assure you that black people do not talk this way... especially in front of white people. We do not refer to the caucasian person standing in front of us as "the white lady" or tell each other to "kiss my black ass". Trust me, "kiss my ass" will do. Does the black familly have their own story or does all of their scenes have to be escorted by a white character. Frankly, if this is Showtime's way of getting diversity into their TV shows I would prefer they leave us out. Also, some of the scenarios/comedy is a little bit too forced for a show that appears to be somewhat of a "real world" comedy. Kind of like 6 Feet Under being quirky for the sake of being quirky. Otherwise, funny show that may be trying a bit too hard. I'll keep watching but at this rate, the writing of the black family will probably drive me away. elcabio

But you don't mind the absurd way they write up all the dyfunctional white familys in this show..Im white as a ghost with a lot of black friends and all the time when I go to there houses they bust this " white boys " balls..but they love me anyway..and me them.I think that black family makes the whole show , their funny as hell.

The show does need to slow down a bit. They could have done a lo

    by Mr. Profit

I bet HBO wishes they had this instead of The Comeback.... Great show. Needs to relax a bit. More of Perkins, "Isabelly" still makes me laugh.

"But you don't mind the absurd way they write up all the dyfunctional white familys in this show" Hey Optimus, read my post "Also, some of the scenarios/comedy is a little bit too forced for a show that appears to be somewhat of a "real world" comedy. Kind of like 6 Feet Under being quirky for the sake of being quirky." To make you feel better, when the white families say lines like "kiss my white ass" I'll be irritated for my wife and stop watching. elcabio

is scoring the soundtrack to Weeds. Click on 'birthday video' to hear him play. Come to think of it, this is a pretty fucking good soundtrack. You can listen to almost all of the tracks at the link above. Spoiler: the track "Blood" plays over a rather Donnie Darkoesque moment...damn if I can't stop listening to it.
