Here we go again... More SPIDER-MAN 3 rumors...

Ahoy, squirts. Quint here with yet another spin around the rumor merry-go-round on the identity of the villains in SPIDER-MAN 3. I almost didn't run this because it's getting kinda boring. Since back in February of this year we've run the rumors of the villains in Spidey 3 being Venom, Sandman and one of the Goblins. I wrote a piece about a month ago gathering all the rumors in one place and applying a little logic to them (read that article here). This had mainly to do with the Goblin, Chameleon and Venom rumors.

I was hoping that'd quell the rumor mill for a while, but it's up and spinning again, playing a very familiar tune. My sources with-in Sony are sure the villains are Electro and Sandman, with Franco taking steps toward the glider. That jibes with Raimi's interest in classic characters. But now Freeze Dried Movies claims they have an anonymous source that says the villains are for sure Venom (Topher Grace), Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church) and Hobgoblin (James Franco), except this is the first time someone who has reported that Franco was playing Hobgoblin actually acknowledged that's a departure from the comics since Harry Osbourne became the Green Goblin again in the books, not Hobgoblin.

I'm tired of these rumors. I'm not saying that FDM doesn't have a legitimate story. They might, but until we get Sony confirmation on who these villains will be this just sounds like a rehashing of old rumors to me.

H there Harry, Im a long time reader of the site and I love it. Just saw this up and wondered if theres any truth to it. Enjoy.

but I like the idea of Topher playing Electro and Hayden Church playing Sandman a whole lot better than the stupid Topher-as-Venom and everyone-as-Chameleon rumors. Actually that's the best proof Quint's source is right: it sounds like the better movie. I trust Raimi.

Gimme Electro, Sandman and the origin of the Lizard

    by stlfilmwire

Topher would be great as Electro. Sandman would be a great visual addition. And keep Harry away from throwing pumpkins. Maybe it could show him resisting, and by the end of the movie he could be finally pushed to decide that he's evil. Maybe also develop the Lizard. Set him up for the movie after the next one.

    Sandman will rule...!

    by cra1g0s

I wouldn't go for Venom to be honest as I always thought it was a bit of crappy storyline, the original alien costume story was pretty good but it went a bit too far and never really worked. Sandman was great, probably the best villain after the Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus, but I think the time is right now to expand it with two characters, the other being Electro. So how about Raimi goes with these two (Thomas Hayden Church will be perfect) and then see the Sinister Six appear for the next movie. After that, I hate to say it, but if Sam Raimi wants to focus on classic characters, then we may have reached the end of the spidey franchise, or Raimi and Tobey Maguire's interest. Raimi also introduced Curt Connors\The Lizard in the last movie so we can be pretty sure he'll expand on this, but whoever the villains are, we can be sure that Raimi will continue to do a wonderful job.

I doubt topher grace is playing the 2nd part of the chamelion since he's confirmed he's lifting weights. He does resemble eddie brock too.Church would be the perfect Sandman and Hell they gave spidey organic web spinners so why not make Harry The HobGoblin instead of the Green Gobling,I hope these are the Villians for the film.

    by jollysleeve

Pretty funny/cool. I may be remembering wrong, but I think it was Quint who wrote a previous recent Spiderman article in which the word "jives" was incorrectly used instead of "jibes" about 3 or 4 times. Two of the talkbackers were prissy bastards and ripped Quint (or whoever it was) for this mistake; I was one of those prissy bastards. Now in this article, clear as day--"jibes." Hats off to you, Quint.

    by Lone Fox

Hobgoblin IS a classic character! Not Sandman classic, but a fucking good period in Spidey history. At the very least he originally appeared pre McFarlane era Multiple villains... hmm it could be done well, Spidey 2 had a decent amount of groundwork setting up (maybe? Heh) Harrys fall from grace, split with Ocks story arc. I suppose they could just feature certain villains, not neccessarily centre stage... kind of like the bounty hunter line up in Empire Strikes Back! Chameleon is and always has been a rubbish character.

What a waste. The '90s were full of crap because of Venom and Carnage. It's just an excuse for more crappy CGI. Electro and Sandman would be great. Hell, I'd like Sandman and Hydro-Man. All the oldskool comic fans would know how it ended, but I wouldn't care. I'd love to see that on film.

And acourding to them Green Goblin doesnt show up till almost the very end, with it being more a "Anikin fall from grace story" and not really a hes a baddy thing

I still believe there will be a female villain, i.e. Black Cat

    by performingmonkey

I now think Sandman is a certainty because, as someone else said, he is one of the coolest beyond the Goblin and Doc Ock, but I also think Black Cat is needed or else it'll be all male villains. There needs to be a new female character in the series, and Black Cat would be perfect. Raimi has had her in mind for 2 movies. Maybe they don't want to reveal the villains to us because much of the plot relies on you not knowing about the Chameleon or something. Maybe Aunt May is the Chameleon.

    One more thing..!

    by cra1g0s

Maybe it's what I remember reading when I loved comics so much, but Sandman would just translate incredibly to film, imagine the story and the effects, it would be so cool and he's just got so much kudos, no real costume dilemmas for fan boys, he looks like a docker for chrissakes, although maybe some fanboys would discuss the colour of his sweater or haircut. Anyway, the Lizard would be great, there's a footballer here called Martin Keown who'd be great and would require no make-up I swear, oh, and Morpheus, a great character but probably doesn't fit the classic villain template that Sam Raimi's looking for. Against all this is the need to have some adequate origin of the villains and I'm not really sure how Raimi would be able to introduce Sandman, Electro and The Lizard, but if anyone can, Sam Raimi can.

    by Acappellaman

Do you all really think Doc Ock died at the end of Spider-Man 2? What do you think will happen when he loses consciousness? The arms will take over and climb out of the lake, and the good ole doc will be just fine. It was clearly established that they have a mind of their own. They can EASILY bring him back for another movie, perhaps as part of the Sinister Six. Who knows?

    Has anyone considered this...?

    by cra1g0s

Tobey Maguire leaves the Spider-Man franchise to be replaced by Topher Grace, the villain is Sandman and The Lizard also wreaks havoc along with The Green Goblin...?

  • Raimi has spoke of that annual a few times, especially suring interviews for the first film...he's signed for four, but has said that he wants to stay on through six, which Sony has already planned out and Pascal has gone as for as to announce...Doc Ock, Goblin, Lizard, Sandman, Electro and my money is Mysterio, unless he decides to tie Kraven in with Connor's transformation into the Lizard.

I know it wasn't Harry but when I was reading comics that was the only thing I never got a clear answer on. Who really is/was the Hobgoblin?

  • Sept. 9, 2005, 10:27 a.m. CST

    Hobgoblin

    by jsm1978

The hobgoblin was 3 or 4 different people. There was one guy pulling the strings, and kept either getting people to play the part, or framing people. Then Macendale was the hobgoblin and got demonic powers... it's pretty complicated.

Best idea for Spidey 3 villainy

    by MechaTruffautMk2

I think the best idea for villains in S3 (you heard it here first!!) or maybe S4 (even keweler!) is to have Harry, as the new Goblin, heading a Sinister Six type team. This is the only way we'll see most of the lesser tier bad guys like the Rhino, Hydroman, the Vulture and possibly Electro or the Chameleon, depending on what direction the next movie takes. That will give you plenty of room for big action set pieces which, great as it was, the second movie really lacked in. And they can be killed off (or imprisoned) without too much fanfare, because they're basically just super-powered minions to the real threat, Harry. This would be similar to how the Brotherhood of Mutants has been handled in the X-Men movies, but would work a lot better, as characters like the Rhino or Hydroman have lame and/or generic back stories, and the minion-ification of Sabretooth and Mystique cut out a lot of interesting material. So there you have it!

It's all a ploy to sell more fucking toys. Raimi's Spiderman flicks have been good because of the writing and the depth they are giving the characters but I don't know if you can add this many and not have it go Phhht. The X-Men movies pulled it off though, with a ensamble cast. So I'll keep my faith and keep wishing that they'll have The Living Vampire show up soon.

I think SP3 is set up for Sinister six

    by andrew coleman

I believe the rumor about Harry not getting on the glider till the end is true, and he probably kills MJ. The entire movie of SP3 will be Peter and MJ trying to work their new relationship out, while Spider-man has to deal with Sandman and Electro or Chameleon. Then in SP4 Harry makes the Sinister 6 with Goblin, Doc Ock, Chameleon or Electro, rhino, shocker, Vulture. This then could set up SP5 when spidey gets the black suit and is really angry about losing MJ and Harry. SP5 baddies could be King Pin and the Spider Slayer robots in which black suit spidey fights, at the end he looses the suit and Venom is created for SP6. Boo-yeah.

    by Kamikaze_Jones

what I think, but I'm gonna be pissed if they do Topher and Church as Chameleon. Spider-Man 2 was a fantastic film, better than the first, but a lot of the scenes that weren't Spider-Man in action turned quickly to Emo melodrama, and not well done melodrama, either. Using the Chameleon angle will only create more of this nonsense and less of shit getting fucked up, which is kind of what I expect from Spider-Man. As for who I'd like to see, in a perfect world it would be Venom and Carnage, with Harry turning to the dark side at the very end and killing Mary Jane. But based on the rumors going around, I'd like to see Thomas Hayden Church rock the Sandman, Topher as Venom, and the aforementioned Harry transformation.

    Venoming and all that jazz...

    by dr_buggerlugs

The only logical way you could fit a version of Venom into SM3 is by turning him into a mirror-image, bizarro Spider-Man; no clingy symbiotes, alien hoodoo-voodoo and jazz like that - just let Eddie Brock get bitten by a spider like Peter (surely it could happen it so someone else) and give him the same powers as Spidey, albeit using them for bad than good then make way for lots of action set piece goodness - of course that doesn't make him a true adaptation of Venom in any way but it'd be better than all that symbiotic crap involving a suit being ALLLIIIIVVVVEEEE! Though I'd much rather see a Sandman/Electro combination.

  • Sept. 9, 2005, 12:05 p.m. CST

    Just a Thought

    by spengler87

Think about it. Raimi is great at what he does, and is he really going to seemingly sacrifice characterisation for batlles with all these villains? No way.If they introduce several villains there is gonna be much less focus on Peter and MJ. They don't have to give all the villains an origin, but the story is gonna be overcrowded with all their agendas ,and the possibility of them teaming up. No way is Grace playing Venom in this movie(maybe Electro if they go with several villains)but i can see him playing Eddie Brock, in this one and then becoming Venom in the next. It makes sense because its said Grace is a villain, and maybe he is just being ambiguous. So if he is playing Brock technically he is kind of a villain.Personally I think It should be Sandman and at the end have Harry turn into the Hobgoblin(not Green Goblin 2 because it shows Harry striking out on his own but still taking on his Father's legacy, besides the GG suit wasn't very good) at the end to kind of tie up that story arc.

  • Sept. 9, 2005, 12:47 p.m. CST

    Chameleon

    by ElGuapo1978

If it is Chameleon I would bet there is another villain as well. This being a big summer action movie you arent going to have the whole plot revolve aound a guy who just changes shape. You would need another baddy like sandman to fill in the big brawls. And even though I dont think that Venom will be in this movie, Topher Grace could play Venom because the symbiote would add all that extra bulk he would need. But Venom would end up all CGI, which would be fine since half these movies are CGI already. In fact Topher Grace is in keeping with the ultimate universe depiction of venom which the first two spidey movies have been based on so closely.

  • Sept. 9, 2005, 12:51 p.m. CST

    SPOILERS!

    by 3 Bag Enema

Sideways dude will be Sandman. His origin will be poorly shoehorned into the plot, and there will be desperate battles with him during which Spider-Man saves lives at great risk to his own, and finds an excuse to take his mask off early and often. Topher Grace WILL be Ultimate Eddie Brock. As UEB was a childhood friend of Peter's and the son of Pete's Dad's partner when they were scientists, and alive. He will provide a portal through which we will be encouraged to feel deep sympathy for a sighing, dewy-eyed Peter, not because his Uncle died, but because - hey, his parents are dead, too! Come on, that's fucking sad, and Raimi gets to use that tragedy, as well as link it to the origin of yet ANOTHER science experiment gone awry turning someone close to Peter into a villianous series of ones and zeros. Of course, Topher was chosen because he's the amoral Pete, who believes that with great power comes great fucking shit up. Harry will NOT become Hobgoblin, nor Green Goblin, nor Nobgoblin, nor any other goddamned Goblin, for two reasons: it's what everyone expects, and it would be lame. He will more likely than not prove to be a great friend to Peter as well as a tragic one, as he will die heroically in a way that makes Peter dump MJ at the end because he doesn't want her to end up like Harry because of Spider-Man. There's yer goddamned movie, folks! And thank you.

Harry and Mori probably know A LOT about EVERY movie out there and quite simply can't report the scoops because then they'd be OUT of the Hollywood circle; I mean, didn't Harry have some sort of video conference with Bryan Singer when "Superman Returns" started production? And what the hell is it with Mori's "cryptic" messages? Didja see his message in the "Marvel/Paramount" talkback??? If he KNOWS Edgar Wright is up for the "Ant-Man" flick, why not REPORT it??? They just need to pass the Ain't It Cool torch on. It's really no different then when TV Show Actors make it to the big screen (we'll use "ER" for an example)... but please, guys... if you ever DO give up Ain't It Cool... DON'T pass it to Herc.

Shouldn't we be past the rumor phase by now?

    by IAmLegolas

I don't remember it taking this long to reveal the villians for the last two Spider-Man movies. *** And having Franco as the Hobgoblin, instead of The Green Goblin, just makes it easier to separate the two in the audience's minds (and hopefully gives the production crew a chance to redesign the outfit better).

    by skycrapper

they did it like the early McFarlane drawings where the mouth wasn't out of control. The first time you see his mouth in the comics would translate perfectly to a movie. Where MJ thinks it's Peter in the suit and through the darkness she sees a creepy mouth forming on the mask. The 3rd movie needs to up the ante and make these villians tough and scary and I don't think Cameleon is either one of those.

the villians in the spiderman movies...

    by calami-shami

were all named by J Jonah Jameson and to a lesser extent Sam's brother (Ted? is it) So it would make sense that when harry shows up all decked out in the power rangeresque goblin suit that Jameson calls him Hobgoblin insted of green goblin. I actually hope they keep this trend of name calling. It saves the audience the displeasure of having the villian say his name. Plus it gives that hitler stash having flat top more screen time. Bruce Cambell should be sandman for cryin out loud WHY DOESNT RAIMI GIVE IT TO HIM DAMMIT.

    Who gives a damn?

    by Cpt Kirks 2pay

Spiderman? X Men? Superman Returns? Who really gives a damn about these movies anyway. Now that Star Wars is gone, there's nothing to get excited about anymore. These films don't come anywhere near Star Wars. They don't compare, compete, or even lift a candle to Star Wars. I mean what is Spiderman anyway? A stupid little story about a single fantasy cartoon figure vs another cartoon fantasy figure, with a girl chucked in just to keep the 'emotional' element going. Look at Star Wars, it had thousands of fantasy figures running around in it's huge galaxy with much bigger important stories going on to portray these characters and settings and a lot more emotional importance than just being in love. It trounces all this X Men, Superman Returns, poor fantasy wannabes in a single frame of itself. Why do people make such a big deal about them is beyond me. Now that Star Wars has now ended with Revenge of the Sith, it's crowning achievment and best film of the lot, there is just nothing wroth talking about anymore, nothing to look forward or get excited about. Face it, life will be worse from now on, as it will just be boring. Why do you guys just get a life, and stop being so boring going on about insignificant films like this?

No Venom cause of crappy CGI???

    by KongMonkey

I guess a guy turning into SAND ain't gonna look crappy either. Or a guy metamorphing. But X-Men already did that, so... Or a guy pulsating electricity out of his hands. Didn't Dr. Doom already do that shit in the last Marvel flop too. Electro and Chamelion both already resemble other characters from Marvel put to screen, so if Raimi's smart he'll stick away with them. I wouldn't mind seeing Venom on film, but don't just TOSS him in like a side order. Save him for 4 and use this film to build up that storyline, like Harrys descent into Goblinism started in 2. Venom would make a good continuation in not only Spidey's story, but the whole Peter Parker one too. Pete goes Johnny Cash in 3 with his new black suit, goes crazy and mad briefly before his internal conflict with the alien suit concludes with him beating it. Leading to Eddie Brock, who perhaps, drifting away from the comics, is not the dumb jockhead he was portrayed as, and is in fact another little geek (Grace) jealous of Petes success and having a crush on MJ. Once he learns that Pete is spidey in 3, he gets even angrier, and in the end gets the symbiote. Leading to 4. If they do bring venom on, I do agree that they should drift away from his dumbass protrayal in the comics. Make him a murdering sumbitch too. Don't give him the cheezy one liners like the Batman films descended into. Make him a monster that'll filet you if you so much as look at him wrong. But no venom in 3, please. Bring on Sandman.

    Alien Costume

    by ElGuapo1978

I think its pretty unlikely that they will have the Venom/alien costume symbiote have the same origin story that it does in the classic comics. The Ultimate universe origin is much more plausible in the Spiderman world that is created in the films. They arent going to introduce the whole secret wars back story, and some other introduction of an alien symbiote connected to spiderman would be even more hokey than another experiment gone awry. Oh and Brock Lesanr was barely a good enough actor to pull off his "performances" in the WWE, he could never be a major character in a feature film. I for one hope they manage to finish off the Green Gobiln storyline in this movie so we get to see something new. The Green Goblin is pretty boring visually compared to a ton of other spidey villains. I for one think that when Harry does become the goblin it will be Hobgoblin because that is in keeping with the ultimate story line. The ultimate universe is Marvel's biggest seller and having a new and different looking character will sell mor toys and t-shirts too.

It's official, Venom's going to become another Bane.....

    by axelfoley

We should have seen this coming. Don't put Venom in this. Because if this rumor has any weight to it, which personally I don't think it does, it's going to fucking suck spectacular taintrind. Sorry, but it's the truth. I could lie to you all and say that squeezing in a supervillain who's popularity is without a doubt astonishing even for a comic character as a third wheel to more "old school foes" of that particular title is a good idea but who are we kidding. It's almost like they're trying to hard. Sam, Church as Sandman will own, but most of us have figured as much like 5 months now, in spite of his incessant acting like an ass whenever remotely confronted about this subject. Harry as Hobgoblin is fine. Whatever. Just if you're gonna go that far, why not pay homage to Spidey's 80sdom and throw in the black suit. Have Tobey's regular duds smell or something like in the comic and fucking throw it in the hamper for a couple days and wear a black costume. Keep in mind, despite the contrary, this is one guy who could give two shits less about Venom, but STILL doesn't want him to get 'Baned' should this be the route Raimi's going. If this keep's up, speculation will be that Cardiac will be the villain for God sake. And Harry, they really tore you a new one in Entourage. If you can take it in stride, more power to you. If that was me I'd be fucking livid.

    by Doc_Strange

Also the FX house they used is way ocverpriced. I couldn't believe they spent 200 million on the last production because honestly, it didn't look like it cost that much. Although improved over Spidey 1, the CG moved too fast and still looked too fake. If they're gonna do Sandman and Venom, Raimi should use a different FX house that specializes in NATURAL human movement as opposed to videogame cinema CG.

From what I remember, he & Parker were childhood friends because their parents had been friends. The goo that becomes venom came from research Parker sr. had been doing for a cancer cure. Anyway, Eddie Brock has a sample of the goo. After that I forget how it went. I think similar to original Venom - goo attaches itself to Peter, Peter rids himself of goo, goo finds Brock and they bond. Does Venom remind anyone else of Gumby?

    by Cpt Kirks 2pay

Fisrt time in a year since I viewed it. Can't believ ehow much it's dating. Not just the FX and other techncial aspects, but the storyline and characters too. Just so quickly becomes uninteresting and boring. Spidey loves Mary J, Mary J loves Kate, Harry wants to kill Spidey. This is the emotional core and anchor of the film, and it's like IS IT JUST THAT!!???? How boring! This storyline'd interest evaporates so quickly. Spiderman is instantly forgettable as soon as you leave the theatre, no matter how entertaining it is whilst you're watching it, and the story just WON'T last the test of time, not 1 year, not in 20. Star Wars on the other hand, 20 years from now, Anakin nad his dark turn, what he does to his wife, his mentor and his Jedi friends, the fall of the Jedi, The Clone Wars, the Emporer's cunning, power, and rule, will always be generating interest and excitement. It's story will always be intruiging to viewers, sci fi special effects or not. PLEASE!!! - do with this Spiderman film and be done with it.

Obviously since it was an upside down kiss and Tobey Maguire wasn't in the building she couldn't right? That stupid bitch screamed "EWWW NO,LIKE I'VE GOT A BOYFRIEND NOW, I LOVE YOU JAKEY" The bad part was she was serious. Then when she was on stage accepting the award she said that something to the effect of "The kiss in Daredevil was a ripoff of ours". Now that bitch is on Tv saying the president caused the Hurricane. The man has caused some shit in his day but i didn't know he had the same powers as Storm from the XMEN. When someone says Spiderman to me, I think of a much darker, scary monstrous, but good, albeit conflicted superhero. All I'm really saying is that these films are overrated and only good for their day, whilst Star Wars is taken for granted because it's so good. It's the only film you end up wanting more from becuase you're given so much more than you expected in the first place. by Farging Bastige

The only thing that matters about Spidey-3 is: What cheeseball role will Bruce Campbell play in it? Oh, and the movie is likely to stink on stilts no matter who the villain is. So truly, none of this even matters.

Harry was a "good Goblin" for all of about five panels at the end of his Spectacular Spider-Man stint as the Green Goblin, when he saved Mary Jane from a burning building (and possibly died), hardly enough to base a movie on. There was a superhero Green Goblin, but it was not Harry Osborn.

The irony of fanboy loathing of Venom...

    by Kamikaze_Jones

is that, while they bash his fans for liking him simply for looking cool and being violent...well, why is that not good? It's a comic book, not Shakespeare, sometimes its more fun to watch people get fucked up than to see melodramatic old guys dress up in halloween costumes and fuck with a geek's head. I, for one, would like to see puny Parker get bitchslapped by Venom, and I'm sure I'm not alone...
