Hungry' How about a huge chunk of '80s cheese' NIGHT OF THE COMET 2!'!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with something cool for us '80s cheese fans out there. Now, I didn't grow up with NIGHT OF THE COMET, like some of my other favorite '80s cheese flicks like BLOOD DINER and NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. Matter of fact I've just recently seen this gem myself. I have too much nostalgia for stuff like HOUSE and NIGHT OF THE DEMONS to put it among those films, but it was a ton of fun.

Now it has been announced that a sequel with the same cast and same director is in the works. Here's the press release below!

Kelli Maroney, who starred in the sci-fi classic “Night of the Comet” as Sam (“the little girl with the big gun”), will reprise her role in the sequel, NIGHT OF THE COMET II, which she will co-produce with Charlie Mason for his company, Ride the Rail Entertainment, which is clearing the rights.

The original film, long unavailable on DVD or video, was written and directed by Thom Eberhardt, and starred Maroney, Mary Woronov, Robert Beltran, Geoffrey Lewis and Catherine Mary Stewart, some of whom will reprise their original roles.

“I’m thrilled to be able to bring this one back,” said Maronrey, dropping into character as Sam the Cheerleader. “Like, what’s up with it not being out there? I’m so sure it totally has to be….”

In the original “Night of the Comet,” a comet wipes out most of life on Earth, leaving two Valley Girls (Maroney and Stewart) to fight evil flesh-eating zombies who survive the disaster. The zombies are led by mad scientists Lewis and Woronov. The girls hook up with a friendly truck driver (Beltran) and survive, presumably to repopulate the Earth.

The original film was financed by the Film Development Fund and released domestically by Atlantic Releasing Corp, Paramount, and CBS-Fox Video.

If you've seen the movie then you know the ending isn't exactly a cliff hanger... I'm curious to see where this goes. I hope it's not going to be done on the ultra-cheap with direct-to-DVD production values. The first one obviously didn't have a huge budget, but what was grade B then and what is grade B now is quite a different quality level. Maybe it's the advent of digital photography or the fact that B films hardly ever see a theater screen (thanks to the near elimination of drive-ins and the ease of video/cable), so the filmmakers skimp on the production design and lighting. Who knows? I just know I'd be sad if this is a cheapo direct to DVD follow-up.

I'm currently in the process of contacting some of those involved to get some more dirt on the project, so stay tuned!

I have a bad feeling about this. Where can they possibly go after that ending? Plus, let's face it, a huge part of the charm of the first movie is the mix of 80s teen movie cheese with 80s schlocky horror. Good luck to them though. I hope it turns out good. And, if this helps in getting the first one released on DVD, it'll all be worth it.

I actually thought for a second they were making a sequel to the light, whimsical romp starring Tim Daley and Penelope Ann Miller.

I remember watching 'Night of the Comet' on cable years ago. It was actually a very funny movie. It had a lot of satire, sort of like a smart 80's teen comedy like 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' mixed with one of Romero's 'Dead' films. I can't really imagine them going forward with this one without Cathernin Mary Stewart. She's been out of the loop a long time (after 'Nightflyers', who wouldn't be?) so it'd be nice to see her return. I'm kind of curious to see how this plays out. Then again, watching 'The Hills Have Eyes 2' nearly ruined the first one, which is a horror classic. Still, NOTC was not the classic THHE was so I'm not really worried about the first film being tainted by a sequel. Besides I can't get enough good 80's nostalgia. Sure, I hated the Reagan administration but that was a long time ago <G>...

And you even threw in a name check for "Blood Diner" and "Night of the Creeps," one of my favorite movies of all time ("Thrill me."/"Girls, I have good news and bad news." "What's the good news?" "Your dates are here." "Uh, what's the bad news?" "They're dead."). Quint, you da man.

If nothing else, this guarantees the original finally gets a DVD release, so I could care less if the sequal sucks. Fucksake though, Maroney was too old to play a high school cheerleader again by the mid-80's, so imagine what kind of GILF gear they'll have to put her in this time out. It's a shame we won't get Geoffrey Lewis again (unless they go full-on zombies in this one), but he already had a nice comeback turn in "Devil's Rejects." Maybe in this one the girls will battle Pat Hingle & Tackleberry!

What we saw was how people in one city beat the zombies- there could have easily been other survivors all over the country, and the world. Since they want to use some of the same people, and so much time has past, they are going to have to come up with some creative storyline. I loved Night of the Comet, I'd love to get the DVD of it.

that Hollywood has completely run out of original ideas. The only people who are tickled by this news is Catharine Mary Stewart, who can escape playing soccer mom for a month or two, and Robert Beltran, who can now afford that 2004 PT Cruiser he's had his eye on for quite some time.

You haters suck the big one. First you whine your asses off about remakes, which to be honest I do most of the time as well. However, I don't bitch when they actually go ahead and make a mind-bogglingly unnecessary sequel to a third-rate 1980s geek flick. The way I see it is the more time that's passed, the more obscure the original is, the more of the original cast they can assemble and the less interest there is today makes the thing un-fucking-missable. Show me someone who doesn't want to see sequels to The Last Starfighter, Krull, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, V, Evilspeak and Trick or Treat and I'll show you someone who needs a swift and furious kick to the balls. And where the FUCK are the Night of the Creeps and Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare DVDs?!?

  • Sept. 6, 2005, 9:43 a.m. CST

Catherine Mary Stewart must be in this...

    by zer0cool2k2

...otherwise, what's the point? To me, this was one of the most underrated of the 80's cheese horror/sci-fi flicks, along with Spellbinder (which will probably never see DVD) and April Fool's Day (which finally did a couple of years ago).

    by Dorsiafan

If we were somehow able to go back in time and make a sequel in 1986 - excellent. Making a sequel to the film two decades later is just...weird. Oh well, should be interesting to watch the premiere on SCI-FI in a year or so.

  • Sept. 6, 2005, 11:23 a.m. CST

    This could be good news.

    by Thavertop

Loved the original, keeping my fingers crossed for this sequel. I'm trying to imagine a generation of survivors that have been raised by valley girls. :-P Like, OMG! When the DVD of the original hits the shelves I'll be there with money in hand.

    by Bones

An absolutely fantastic film--low budget, a good sense of humour and pathos--Atar's of the best video games of the 80's and did I mention how hot the girls were? I mean, I fell head over heels for Catherine Mary Stewart in this movie--She's right up there with Mary Stewart Masterson and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio as my favorite three-named actresses. It was also very quotable: "Let's Play a Game...It's called 'Scary Noises'" "Daddy would have got us Uzis" "He was eating a dead cat...well, Mostly Dead..." "The Burden of Civilization has fallen on us...Bitchen' Huh?" Good Stuff! Now I just hope the sequel doesn't suck.

Who is possibly financing this crap?

    by Dorsiafan

I wonder if they really have financing for this thing or if this press release is being used to drum up $$$... If they do somehow get this thing made, the director/actress should be commended for an excellent sales job. I could guarantee a better return on investment with scratch-off lotto tickets... In any event - this story does give me hope that I'll find funding for my big-budget "Midnight Madness" prequel/sequel trilogy...

    by Durendal

That's a chintzy 80's sequel I'd like to see. And LOTD was not that great. I liked it, but it could have been so much more. Kaufman was a shitty, one-dimensional villain. It wasn't long enough to get a real feel for the situation and the characters. Meh. Still had lots of nifty zombie gore, though.

HDNET shows Night of the Comet occasionally

    by zer0cool2k2

I've kept it on my DVR for a couple of months since there's no DVD. And as long as you're talking about Killer Klowns, how about a DVD of "Hardbodies"? (Grant Cramer was in it also, along with the red-headed geek of every 80's movie, Courtney Gaines). That movie had more gratuitous nudity than all the other 80's teen comedies combined, not to mention an appearance by Chick Hair-Metal band Vixen before their 15 minutes.

  • Of course, now whenever I see him without that giant face-tattoo, he looks weird, like Tom Seleck sans mustache.
