An Angel's daddy, a Scottish Mutant's Mommy and a bad mofo have been cast in X3!!!

Published at:  Aug 15, 2005 3:50:41 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some interesting X3 casting news broke by the good folks over at IGN. Despite my fear of this film being fumbled I have to say that I really, really like the below casting. Strong character actors can go a long way to getting me excited about a film. Bill Duke is one of those screen personas that, when used right, can be fried gold. He is absolutely wonderful in his '80s Schwarzenegger pictures, especially PREDATOR. Michael Murphy (Angel's father) is a solid actor, but has never really stood out for me in the past... I love the casting of Olivia Williams as Dr. Moira MacTaggert.

I'd also tend to believe the IGN folks have better sources about exactly what Bill Duke's character is (see below for the full story or click here to go to IGN!!!). Back in the pre-Ratner days we were both getting similar info when it came to announcing Vinnie Jones in the film. They confirmed he was a villain, we were able to get that seconded and also that he was playing Juggernaut, which they were able to get confirmed with their sources as well. So, if they're saying Bill Duke is a politician I'd go with them, although to see him as the mastermind that created the Sentinels would rock, no doubt. I'm sure we'll see Duke be badass and smolderingly creepy no matter what.

Anyway, on with the story! Enjoy!

Exclusive X-Men 3 Casting News!

The ensemble cast adds three more.

August 15, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has confirmed a Web rumor that Predator actor Bill Duke has joined the cast of X-Men 3. Movies Online claims that Duke had been cast as the scientist who created the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots but that's not accurate. Sources indicate that Duke actually portrays a politician in The President's cabinet.

Duke's other acting credits include Payback, National Security and Red Dragon, which was directed by X3's Brett Ratner. Duke has directed such films as A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, as well as a slew of TV series.

IGNFF has learned of some other additions to the X3 cast. Portraying the role of Warren Worthington, Sr., father of Angel (Ben Foster), is Michael Murphy (perhaps best known to fanboys as the mayor of Gotham City in Batman Returns).

Murphy was the star of Robert Altman's famous political satire, Tanner '88, and his other credits include Live From Baghdad, Manhattan and Salvador.

Finally, British actress Olivia Williams has been cast as Dr. Moira MacTaggert. The Marvel Database Project reminds us that, in the comics, the Nobel Prize-winning Moira was a former lover of Professor X's who ran a mutant research center on Muir Island in her native Scotland. She also also the mother of the mutant known as Proteus. Moira died after discovering a cure for a new strain of the Legacy virus.

Williams' credits include The Sixth Sense (as Bruce Willis' wife), Peter Pan (as Mrs. Darling), Rushmore and Below.

    by loodabagel

The headline mentioned Scottish mutants. But who do we get? Moira MacTaggert. You'd think a place like this could get that right. It seems all the roles being announced now are pretty insignificant. Oh, well. Having seen some of the actors credits, it's a good thing they just got bit parts. You know who I'm talking about. His name's Bill Duke. Sigh. I guess there's really no point in bitching now. Because, after all, internet message boards are where all the squillionaire movie moguls get their advice. All that's really left to ponder is the BIG question. Brett Ratner-The new Joel Schumaker? Only time will tell. Fuck Michael Eisner. I'm sure that bastard has some coneection with all of this...

    Moira's no mutant!

    by oisin5199

In fact, the whole point of her Legacy Virus storyline was that she was the first (I think only) non-mutant to contract the virus. In the X-World, when the public found out that humans could get the virus, the anti-mutant hysteria increased. So she was the poster child for "straight people can get AIDS, too." I always loved Moira's character with her brogue, her attitude and her bad coffee, and I hope she gets more than just a token line or appearance. I also dig Olivia Williams, who's a good match (and is hah-ot). Not much to say about the others. I'm still curious how Ben Foster's going to work. He's a great actor, but not who I'd imagine for Warren. But one thing people didn't mention in the last talkback was that in addition to playing nerd, retarded, art school freak, and psycho, he also played an actual angel (albeit a mute one) in Northfork. A great silent performance. Anyway, this cast is huge!

    by childe roland

That's what this movie needs! So many that no one can have more than three speaking lines. Okay, maybe that's extreme, but it's starting to feel that way what with all the names being tossed about. Where are they planning to shoehorn Moira into this? Al of that said, Bill Duke does, indeed, kick ass. I'd like to see him, Yaphet Kotto and Keith David in a flick, kicking all kinds of ass and reminding Sam L. Jackson what it means to truly be a bad motherfucker (so bad they don't have to scream). Is it any coincidence these three were some of the coolest characters in my three favorite scary alien monster flicks? I think not.

Sounds like casting is worthy for an X-Men film. However, the best effects, the best casting, and the best director still won't mean shit if the script's not there. Like they say, a good director with a crap script can only make a mediocre movie, but a good script with a bad director can still make a good movie.

Best acting moment of the 80s, courtesy of the Duke. Where was Marlon Brando when this historic moment happened? Also I thought Olivia Williams' casting was better news personally. Her, Carla Gugino, and now after watching The General's Daughter - also starring John Travoltas big pudgy face, rabbit teeth, and 3 blubber layers of chins - lselie Stefanson, should all be bigger stars, at lease working more. Damn, get rid of J Lo, and give bigger roles to more up and coming and just as good female actresses will ya? Better and less predictable casting in Hollywood please?

She sounded really whiny when she said that she didn't do anything for two movies. she did kick some ass with the whole tornados thing. BTW HAllE you did fly in the first one- the elevator- you were there weren't you. If this is the last one all mutants need to go all out not just Storm. I do like her but not when there is sooooo muuuccchhh old and new characters to have some screen time. And don't get me started with Nightcrawler, WHY INTRODUCE A NEW CHARACTER WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO COMPLETLEY IGNORE HIM IN THE NEXT INSTALLMENT!!! Mabye if he sucked a lot of ass but he was pretty awesome. There is so much problems and the filming time should be extended also. Still hoping for the best if not a good last x- men with these actors. And if it really sucks than we'll probably have to wait for 10 or more years for another decent one.

When Singer left they should have fucked the series there and then. At least it would have shut Halle Berry the fuck up. I'm not saying that Singer was so good that nobody else should try, but just fucking with the continuity of it all is a bad bad idea and then rushing out a piece of shit script instead of taking at least 6 months extra prep to get this thing into something producable. Singer did have some vision for the series. Imagine if Raimi (by the way, The Gift is underrated, but fuck that baseball movie he did with Costner) left the third Spides to some cunt like Ratner. Why doesn't he just fuck off and make the third Rush Hour? I'll admit, Red Dragon is watchable. But only once. And only because you're continuously wondering why Anthony Hopkins is even in it, and how it can possibly be pre-Silence ot Lambs.

I know I'm gonna get my head bit off for this, but. . . I didn't think the first two X-Men were all that great. And I don't know why everyone gets wet panties over Bryan Singer as a director. I think his movies are stylisticaly bland and very middle of the road. X-Men comics have always taken themselves waaaay too seriously ( which is part of the appeal for kids and emotionally stunted adults) and have always essentially been soap operas that I don't think translate well to the big screen.

The only "good" side to this news...

    by lindyboy

First, let me say that Moria's character was severely underrated in the mutant franchise on the account that her only assets were acting as a brillant scientist and the old flame to Charles Xavier. But she has heart and that's what's so desperately needed here. This film could definitely use a genuine, non-fabricated romance (The superfluous Wolverine/Storm hook up is actually out of the pages of Ultimate X-Men but is fabricated out of thin air in this continuity) and add a well...more human side to the rather cerebral Xavier (plus some great interplay between her, Charles and Magneto back in the day a la flashback might be nice). I hope Williams displays a lot of Moria's tenacity and sass._____________________________
Word to Bill Duke being SEVERELY underrated, although I'm sorry to say he'll probably end up standing in with Warren Worthington Sr. (no doubt competently played but still leaden in the script) as resident "anti-mutant bigot" cutout villains, which for me, like many of you, is STILL my biggest disappointment with this film. They have a chance to expand the direction of the franchise and they've wasted it. Dark Phoenix, the Hellfire Club, Mr.Sinister, Bolivar Trask and the Sentinels, Apocolypse, among others are all compelling adversaries, each with their own take on the mutant/human conflict that will not overshadow the main theme. I'm sorry but I simply have to continue to rail against this because I'm of the opinion that this may prove to be so awful, Fox will abandon the franchise all together.

The thing scaring me is Halle Berry is gonna be all over this!

    by the true priapic

I mean..what I always thought when watching the xmen films was..wow,she's great she should be used more!Christ on a stick.Dreadful.The more cast members the more convoluted the plot. The more I hear the less I care.Throwing away Nightcrawler is just plain strange.Knocking off Cycke the way its reported is terrible. The director has proved to be nothing special.Killing off Prof and Magneto(if they have indeed gone that way) is a blatantly desperate ploy to give emotion to a story that lacks drama. It's strange how Marvel/Fox seem to want to quickly make as much cash as possible from this series,as if the doctor had just told them it had terminal cancer. There's so much they could have done with this series. What a shame it's all going to hell.Even the really terrible tabloids are reporting over here that the Williams sisters are in it(I don't believe it,but the fact anything could happen with this...just...aches).Never mind.As long as Spidey 3 doesn't go the 'loads of villains' route as other child-like comic book films have gone, there might be a little hope.Fuck this film though.Strangely,I watched the Corman FF the other night.I admit, its cheeeeaaappooooo, but theres more fun, more of an attempt, more honest to god EFFORT to entertain, more story, more relation to source...than the wrethched turd thrown at cinema screens this summer.Yeah,I know Cormans FF was awful in so many ways but...I stand by my opinion.Put it on TV mid '78.It would have been loved. At least it can't be accused of being a gilded turd.Never thought I'd say it,but Fuck all these superhero films.Fuck them all.At school,if you were known to read Spidey or Xmen when you were in your late teens you'd be thought of as immature and laughed at.Now we have film producers doing the same thing to fans.

Halle Berry Dies Suck. So Thank God They Aren't Gonna Use He

    by www.valiens.com

The following is an excerpt from an article in VLife Magazine. (The "V" is for "Variety," sorry to disappoint): "As one of the writers of the last film, I'd say it's true she ended up with mostly exposition and plane-flying," [Zak] Penn says. "There was a whole sequence in the beginning of the last film that showed the origins of her character in Africa, and it got cut simply because there are 14 characters to service. But 'X3' has a couple of big twists, and Storm is right in the center of them. The fact that Halle is a very good actress who was underused compounds the wish for her to have a better role." ____________ You know what? Halle is "a very good actress" in certain roles. Storm ain't one of 'em. For the love of god, kill her off or replace her with CGI or something. I think Jar-Jar is free now--can they call up Lucas? "Meesa Thinka Storm's Comin'!"

    Maybe Moira

    by oisin5199

will be brought on as a character in the Magneto spinoff, showing how they started the mutant underground. That would be cool. Throw in Amelia Voght, too. BTW, Moira's not Legion's mother, Gabrielle Haller (sp) is. Xavier and Moira did not have children. Moira's son was someone else, a destructive mutant who was pretty shortlived, I forget his name. She's Rahne Sinclair (Wolfbane)'s adoptive mother, so she's somebody's mommy. Wow, I'm an X-Men geek. Comics SPOILER: I just read fall 2000's Dream's End crossover when Moira finally dies and Jean and Cable had to tear Xavier's astral form away from her when she goes. Wow. Anyway, if they fuck up the movie, we'll always have the comics. Maybe someday, they'll do a full on sci-fi Cable/Age of Apocalypse movie.

    Halle Berry et all

    by gaeriel

First, Halle Berry, not so good. That was not Ratner's fault, it was SINGER! I love Singer but that was HIS casting choice. Unfortuneltey, Ratner should have stuck to keeping her role small after realizing the huge suck factor she brought. Second - Fox is SO lucky they have a frnachise that has a lot of great characters and plot lines. THey dont even have to put in much effort to have a successful film...but somehow, they manage to screw up a story that was basically handed to them on a platter. Its the script - that, as other posters have said, is the key, and if the script sux, it could be anyone directing - it wouldnt matter. Yes, the first two Xmen movies werent' even that good - except the talent of the few good actors really managed to pull it together. The plot lines were lame as hell, and the made up characters worked okay - but remember how pissed off we were about them before??!
I am very worried about this film and where its headed, but I dont think Ratner is the problem! I think its greedy studio execs that dont give a shit about good writing! HOw can you screw up a good book like X-men! They should have done this via SIn City and had Chris Claremont do the script and help direct - that would have been such a good idea... Fox is just dropping the ball. But you all know you will still go see it!! (guilty as charged, i know i will). Just sad, is all. And by the way, whoever said that comic books were for 'emotionally stunted adults' Fuck you. Well written comics are just as good as a lot of so called 'high literature' when the character devlopment and plot lines are so good they give you chills. I hate that stereo type.

Anyway, here's how I'd make X-Men 3 (just the casting) Jonny Depp as Cyclops, Jack Black as Wolverine, Bill Murray as Proffessor X, Scarlett Johannsen as anything, Linda Cardelini as Pheonix, That lady from Ray who's name eludes me as Storm, Steve Buscemi as Nightcrawler, Anna Paquin can keep Rogue, but Iceman will be played by Alan Rickman (I think that's who it is. The guy who plays Snape in the Harry Potter movies) And since Ian McKellan is such a badass, he can still be Magneto and he'll have a big brotherhood to work with this time including Jake Ghyllenhall as Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Owen Wilson as Sabretooth, Ben Stiller as Toad, Christopher Walken as Mastermind, Quentin Tarantino as Pyro, Thora Birch as Mystique, and Benicio Del Toro as Gambit. Anyone I forgot? Hmm... Sam Jackson as Bishop, Clint Eastwood as Cable, and Jack Nicholson as Deadpool. They'll get worked in somehow. Oh let's not forget-Lou Reed and David Bowie as Artie and Leech and Iggy Pop as Beak.

I could see James Marsters as Banshee - give him an Irish accent and he's now the right age - and he also had a relationship with Moira. Not to intentionally stick with the Buffyverse, but I could see Julie Benz (Darla) as Emma Frost. I was thinking, as long as we're on fantasy casting, I've ripped on Jennifer Garner for being totally wrong for Elektra, but the Marvel character she could have done really well with would be a Marvel Girl era Jean Grey. oh, and Moira's son was Proteus. The original article says that, duh. I think another talkbacker confused him with Legion.

    by gaeriel

Yes, the most important factor here is Fox Studios and writing. However, Halle has some part to play in this chaos. She threw a serious bitch fit about not having a big enough role and threatened to walk if she wasnt given more film time. Instead of telling her to go fuck herself, Fox gave in and promised her a starring role. hmmm, an ensemble movie with a starring role. Fox forced the script writers to create a more meaty role for her, sacrifcing story, plot, etc. No, the movie is not all her fault, but the direction its headed had a lot to do with her input and fox's cowardice for not refusing her outright. I didnt think poepe liked X Men for Halle or Storm, but apparently the execs at fox think that she is the seller here. Bad decisions all around i'd say

I mean, the point was to rush it to get more money, but the plot sounds convoluted, the high number of new characters will alienate non-fans, and the fans are clearly not digging this. So who exactly is going to open this movie?? Whoever said Blade Trinity is right. I bet it gets the same gross as well. Somewhat okay opening weekend from teenage boys with nothing else to do and a few diehard fans, and then nothing. Yes, she wanted more to do or nothing, so it was THE PRODUCERS' decision not to say: "I'm sorry Halle, but it seems like you're not in this film unless you behave." Every day hundreds of actors, even some with more starpower than Halle Berry get fired for bitching around. I like her and it's too bad that she suddenly feels too big for being just a part of an ensemble, since she became "Academy Award winner Halle Berry".

    by lindyboy

that with all these character additions, not only will the script become further convoluted, but you won't even get a chance to tie up loose end and further develop the relationships already in progress? While Rogue's made a play for Iceman, this script has him slobbering all over Kitty Pryde. *sigh* We should just change the name to "Days of Our Mutant Lives" or "Graymalkin Lane Creek" perhaps. What about a reflective scene between Rogue and Logan on far they have come and how much has changed? Why not get Kitty closer to Pitor (if I may recycle yet another complaint)? What about all those other mutant cameos who deserve a larger part (I know not many of you are fans of that whole pseudo-Batman/Robin, but I'd KILL for a Jubilee/Wolvie scene of banter.)? What about the frickin' Danger Room?!! Arad was playing totally coy in that Wizard interview when asked about it, but where the hell's it gonna fit in the damn film? Danger Room rant aside, even if you kept the original cast from X2, sans Nightcrawler, there's still so much to be done.

People Seem More Excited About The Aquaman Movie Than X3

    by spooge mcduck

Maybe it's just because Aquaman is new and X3 is the third movie, but I think it's becuase they keep changing the cast. It's hard to care about a series where they don't even keep the same actors for the same characters. The Spider-man movies keep the same cast, so everyone will want to see 3. I hope the Batman Begins cast is the same for the next couple of movies. I think it hurt the Matrix too. I know the other two movies weren't as good, but not having Tank hurt and changing the Oracle for the third hurt. I know the actress died, so it was hard to do something in that case, but it still hurt the movies for me.

    by monkeytamer

I love it that people that post here still think that the script "review" that was posted here a month or so was actually worth a shit. Let's review: 1. Both writers said that the script reviewed on AICN was a rush draft and tons of the material had changed or been dropped all together. 2. The reviewer hadn't even seen the last third of the script. 3. Write a "review" of the X1 and X2 scripts and they both sound stupid and reek of suckage (and I don't care what you say Singer didn't save these movies - His direction is passable at best). 4. And as if I needed more proof that the script reviewed is not the final product we will see on screen. Here is a quote from Dark Horizons from an appearance of Patrick Stewart: "Interestingly enough according to one of the attendees, Stewart said most of the scenes he had worked on were not on any hard print whatsoever and were told to him directly from the writer." Whine all you want bitches you've been punked!!!

The script was shit because it was rushed. But it'd need a complete rewrite to be worth anything, and I very much doubt that this has happened. Halle Berry threatens to leave the series if she doesn't get a better part than flying the plane? Then fuck her (not like Pierce Brosnan did in Die Another Day, or Billy Bob Thornton did in Monster's Ball, I mean get her off the fucking movie). Why screw Nightcrawler when he was more of an interesting character. Making Berry more prominent will just screw this movie more. If she fucks Logan it'll be so contrived. *pictures Billy Bob fucking her from behind in Monster's Ball and vomits*

No one knows what this script looks like now. Everyone is screaming that it is going to suck because Halle Berry is going to be all over the picture. For all we know she gets the same screen time but gets to fly and has few lines that are more than exposition. As far as her fucking Wolvie, maybe it is in or maybe not. If it is, what is context. Everyone is saying that StacyX mutant that controls peoples emotions is in it, maybe she's playing around with Storm and Wolvie. Point is who knows! How can you make any determination when we hardly anything about the final product. And even if we did, I still stand by that X1 and X2 sound shitty on paper. Now dance my monkeys! Dance!

Reading the acts of X3 left me wondering if Catwoman was so bad. I thought I knew bad after watching Episode 3 and Alone in the Dark. This movie will be terrible. Bill Duke is a great addition to the movie and with any luck he pistol whip Halle right in the face. He does this I will watch it
