PROFIT!! THE MUPPET SHOW!! THE NBC MYSTERY MOVIE!! Herc

Published at:  Aug 09, 2005 12:16:38 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

If season three of “Columbo”

and

seasons one and two of “McCloud”

weren’t coming out today, would the first season of their NBC Sunday Mystery Movie stablemate,
“McMillan & Wife”

have ever been issued? (Something tells me even the new T.J. Hooker set
might sell a little more briskly.)

“McMillan” paired 46-year-old Rock Hudson with 25-year-old Susan Saint James in a tale of a cradle-robbing police commissioner whose hot trophy wife had a thing for mysteries. It co-starred Nancy Walker (busy also at the time as Rhoda Morgenstern’s mom) as their hard-drinking housekeeper and John Schuck (who would go on to play many an extraterrestrial in the “Star Trek” movies and TV shows) as cop sidekick Charlie Enright. There was always a groan of disappointment on Sunday nights when we realized we weren’t getting “Columbo,” “McCloud” or “Hec Ramsey” that night.

I’ve nothing but fond memories of “McCloud,” however, which starred “Touch of Evil”-“Gunsmoke” vet Dennis Weaver as a deputy marshal from Taos, N.M., assigned to learn about big-city crime-solving in Manhattan. Anything but a bumpkin, Sam McCloud was always two steps ahead of police chief Peter B. Clifford, a profoundly angry man McCloud would taunt with countrified homilies.

I was surprised to learn that “McCloud” actually beat “Columbo” to series, as the former was originally part of a 1970 hourlong wheel called “Four-In-One”; it didn’t get paired with “Columbo” and “McMillan” as a 90-minute mystery movie until the following fall. (Weaver apparently squeezed in “Duel” with Steven Spielberg during “McCloud’s” second season.) The new McCloud DVD set

includes the original Feb. 17, 1970 TV movie that introduced McCloud, the six 1970 hour-long episodes from “Four-In-One,” and the seven 90-minute installments from the 1971-72 season that ran as a component of the “NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie.” (Yes, Wednesday; “McCloud,” “McMillan” and the always-entertaining “Columbo” didn’t move to Sunday nights until the 1972-73 season.)

The first episode of the third season of “Columbo” stars Martin Sheen, Vincent Price and Bruce Kirby. The third stars Jackie Cooper, Jack Riley and a teen-age Katey Sagal (!). Still another stars Jack Cassidy, Mariette Hartley and - wait for it - Mickey Spillane! The sixth episode, co-written by Steven Bochco, has a child actor playing a character named “Steve Spielberg.” (Recall that Bochco and a 24-year-old Spielberg collaborated on the first episode of “Columbo’s” first season back in ’71.) The seventh episode of the third season starred Johnny Cash!

PLAYBOY MAGAZINE : But don't you think [“Saturday Night Live”] gets a little harsh sometimes?

MICHAEL O’DONOGHUE: Sometimes it gets too harsh and sometimes it gets too sweet. For example, those fucking Muppets, those little hairy faceclothes. I'd deep-six them in a second. You'd write a comedy line for them and they'd stick in three "Holy Guacamoles!"

“The first time I met O’Donaghue,” remembers former “SNL” staff writer Alan Zweibel in the book "Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live," “I walked into Lorne’s office, and Belushi’s there, Aykroyd’s there, people the likes of which had never crossed my path before, and I look in a corner of the room and there’s a guy I learned was Michael O’Donaghue. What was he doing, you ask? He had taken Big Bird, a stuffed toy of Big Bird, and the cord from the venetian blinds, and he wrapped the cord around Big Bird’s neck. He was lynching Big Bird. And that’s how we all felt about the Muppets.”

In 1975, The Muppets were regulars during the first season of “SNL,” and all the writers and performers apparently hated them.

In 1976, The Muppets fled “SNL” and migrated to “The Muppet Show,” where they were greeted with only love and adoration. It became one of the most successful syndicated shows in television history - and made Jim Henson a millionaire many times over. (“The Muppet Show’s” head writer, ironically, was Jack Burns, who would go on to script ABC’s short-lived SNL-wannabe, “Fridays.”) Belushi and O’Donaghue and even Henson are all gone now, but the Muppets are certain to endure long after we are all food for worms.

Here’s what I know about Profit: The Complete Series. It was created by David Greenwalt, who would go on to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” the next year, and John McNamera, who created this year’s short-lived “Eyes.” It starred Adrian Pasdar as a really evil multinational executive. Nine hours were shot. Five of them aired on Fox, all in April 1996. People haven’t stopped talked about it since, and now I’ll finally get to find out what all the fuss was about.

Max staged a holdup, Michael got a job at the evil Metachem lab, Iz was stalked by her alien lover from another lifetime and Liz turned into an extraterrestrial. Max went to Hollywood, Maria went to New York and Liz went to Vermont. Max got his kid back from Tess and Michael became “king” after Max died. The best episode was “Control,” in which we learned that Kal Langley (Joe Pantoliano), a famous and hugely successful Hollywood filmmaker, was actually engineered to be hero Max’s alien slave. The two things I hated about “Roswell’s third season? 1) The series finale (except for the very, very last scene) was so uncharacteristically bad I believe it may have been written with the aid of hypnosis. 2) They replaced the great Colin Hanks with pretty-boy Adam Rodriguez, and though his character was supposed to have been born and bred in New Mexico, Rodriguez couldn’t be bothered to ditch the fucking Brooklyn accent.

    by ds9-4ever

I know it's wishful thinking but I sure do wish one of the bonus features on the Soap set was the Benson episode following the end of Soap with Jessica. That episode had me laughing till I was crying it was so funny. It totally belongs with one's collection of Soap.

wagon train great stories, big name stars star trek out west or was star trek wagon train aout amoung the stars! Zane grey theator, Amos and Andy i know i know race senstive. But the king fisher was a con man so was bilko and andy a dummy but so was dobelman. First time the public saw black men as cops, lawyers, judges, doctors and not just porters and servants. And as a black comedian once said of amos and andy, no one ever called a black man a nigger! beside it was funny!

on a side note, i picked up first season of have gun will travel. 36 great shows[ that's right gang a season used to be 36 shows now if we are lucky if we get 22 shows per season. and get this each show ran 25 minutes only 5 minutes of comericals per half our. Today we get 18 minutes of show and 12 minutes of comericals. That's progress? By the way, speaking of star treck Gene rodenberry wrote about a 3rd of those have gun will travel scripts!

    Profit/Roswell

    by johnnysunshine

Profit is probably the set I'm most interested in out of the stuff being released today. I love that shows like that are being brought back and appreciated on dvd. It's a good time.

Roswell season three is a mixed bag if there ever was one. If you cut out every ep about Isabel getting married, you probably have a pretty good season, but unfortunately that plot overwelms a lot of episodes in the first half. Unlike Herc, I didn't like the episodes where Max went to LA; he just seemed boring without the other characters. I think CH-CH-Changes is the one I remember liking best. Also, I definitely agree that the last scene of the finale felt completely right despite anything that came before.

    Roswell Season 4

    by waspo

Damn UPN cut the season order for the third season from 22 episodes to 18, and of course the writers were forced to make some changes to the script. Also, because of the limited budget on UPN a lot of the cool potential for the show went out the window. However, despite of all of that Roswell is one of my favorite shows of all time. I would loved to have seen what they would have done with a fully produced WB 3rd season, and a fully produced WB 4th season as well. I mean dammit One Tree Hill gets a whole 3rd season, and that show is walking garbage, no matter how much T & A you throw into 45 minutes. Roswell ruled and I will never forgive WB for the way they treated Buffy, Angel, and Roswell. Three of the best shows they ever had graced on their crappy network.

Why no Star Trek Animated Series?

    by grape ape

Why is the Star Trek Animated Series being ignored for DVD release? There it was definetly more than just a kiddiefied version of a prime-time series like many shows at the time were (like the "My Favoriee Maritan" and "I Dream of Jeanie" cartoons).
All the old crew excpet Koening lended their voices to the series (and he wrote "The Infinite Vulcan" episode).

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who remembers Profit as being a ton of fun. Jim Profit's character was an utter and complete BASTARD and I adored him! I was completely disappointed when the series was canceled.

Profit Was the End of Fox for Me

    by _maltheus_

Profit was the first show I remember that, despite being so good, was cancelled without being given a chance. I knew people who had gave up on TV but still watched Profit (not sure how they found it) because it was so unique and dark. I have a French-dubbed version of the show and although all of the computer stuff is severely dated (back when they thought VR was gonna take over the world), by the end of watching it the second time, I was still wanting more. A very clever show that marked the beginning of an era (or error) for Fox. After that, they'd often come out with shows, air a few episodes, and then cancel them when they didn't shoot to the top of the Nielsons in the first week. Most people never even had the chance to hear about it. I put Action and Firefly into the same category, but there were countless others. Media moguls no nothing bout investing. From that point on, it seemed like Fox has nothing but contempt for their own products. I don't even give new Fox shows a chance anymore because of that.

    oh hell yeah Fall Guy

    by purgatori

Fall Guy was the shit! Remember when they'd have those freaking Halloween episodes and Elvira would be in it along with like the entire Caradine clan. God I loved that show, even had the little hot wheels size pick up truck. But what about Matt Houston?? Come on, it's Talon with a mustache kicking ass in Texas (points for those of you who remember The Sword and the Sorcerer)

Anyway..anyone else remember McCloud vs Dracula? Or did I make that shit up in my crazed 4 year old head back then. It's fucking scary that my parents let me stay up that late to watch CBS after hours when they reshowed this stuff.

Oh and where's Manimal. You can only keep me happy for so long with the fact that American Gothic is FINALLY coming out this year on DVD (thank you www.tvshowsonDVD.com) That's right...someone's at the door, and it's Amazon.com with my DVD.

Anyway...Profit is still the shit. And yes Best Buy had it for 24 bucks. And I still think they should make a movie, even a TV movie, to continue it. Pasdar is still fucking hot and all the rest of the cast and writers sound like they would do it.

almost done watching the PROFIT espisodes...

    by russman

he was one evil S.O.B. God this show was great. I hated fox then and I'll still hate fox. And a pox on the other networks that didn't jump on this show once fox cancelled it. Like the booklet inside the case said, it was ahead of it's time - it would've been perfect for HBO. Sigh.... dumbass suits and beancounters always ruining things.

    by cyberskunk

I partially remember the show. What I remember the most about it is the intro song.

Ok, so no one else will care

    by silverhour

but when is the wide release of Tru Calling season 2 coming out? I know the Best Buy's in the US have had it since the 2nd, but Canada's Best Buy's don't have it yet, and no one else is carrying it. Also, any word on the third part of the Forever Knight Trilogy?

    Up yours Mrfantasto

    by purgatori

The shit that is on TV now makes stuff like the Fall Guy and TJ Hooker look like Emmy gold. I'd rather sit through two seasons of back to back BJ and The Bear (yes, even with the fucking bimbos in the back of the rig)then one fucking episode of The Simple Life. At least it was good escapist cheese and not the pain of watching Paris Hilton prance around looking like one of those damn stick bug things only without as much of a brain. They are what they are, and I miss the days of The A-Team. And don't even get me started on all this Dragon Ball Z and the crazy shit that it has spawned (it and that goddamn Pokemon.) Tailspin and Rescue Rangers, not to mention Ducktales was at least easy to follow and made sense. Christ, I could buy talking mice and ducks WAY easier then those disturbing bald midget things that look like they are taking steroids and fighting badly drawn monsters.

Okay I'm done ranting. Wait, no I'm not, fix your fucking enter button.

What's the holdup on getting the MI series on DVD? Is it a rights issue or did all the old film and tape get lost. . .
