    Simpsons suckage

    by phimseto

Man, Herc and I are oft at cross-purposes, but I am in agreement with him about "The Simpsons." The season where Homer flies through a skylight and finds Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger is the season where things turned for me. I cannot even watch the reruns anymore because they are too polluted with crap now. I have hopes for the Simpsons movie, though, if only because I believe/hope that they will bring back a lot of the talent from the show's early years.

    by bungion boy

According to Amazon, Season 6 is supposed to out on August 16th. I better not have to wait another month and a half for this dvd. And in regards to Simpsons suckage, while it's true that around season 10 the quality did decline, Simpsons has still always been better than most everything else on tv (especially anything on Sundays at 8) and I've never stopped watching, even when I was pining for the good old days of Season 4. And for the record, I thought this past season was their best in years. They got pretty topical for a show that takes 8 months to produce. Even the future/high school episode was good and generally every time slip episode since season 6 has been a bomb. I eagerly look forward to Sept 11th and the start of the new season. I'll never give up on you, Homer.

    by omarthesnake

"Worst episode ever"... "The show sucks now"... bullshite. bullshite. bullshite. The show may not be as great as it once was, but it's far from sucking. It's the best-written comedy on television even at its current level... which is maybe 85% of its heyday. And if you can't see that, you're a dweeb who's so desperate to pretend to be cool that you'll berate the work of a terrific, talented group of writers, voice artists and cartoonists, and that's just sad that you're that pathetic and ... well, sad. You miserable, soulless, hateful, spiteful, self-absorbed, sad, sad, sad little twits.

It doesn't matter that these are region 4. This is what the region 1 DVDs will look like too, as the sixth season Region 1 disc over at Amazon is a Homer-head too. Season 10 gets a bad rap.

    by scoopbrady

Season 10's episodes range from good to great, with "Homer Simpson in Kidney Trouble" being the sole shitfest from that season. Any season after that has, at best, five good episodes. Not a good percentage. My vote for worst season goes to season 15... As for the packaging, I was hoping it would be similar to the Disney Treasures tins, and that the older style packaging would be inside Homer's head. They look great from the front, but they are going to look like shit in my bookshelf. Not a big deal unless you're an anal retentive nerd like myself. Looking forward to the set regardless. The lemon tree episode is worth the price alone. Shake harder, boy!!

I used to get angry when people would slam The Simpsons. 'It's still funnier than most things on TV!' I'd think. But now, I'm starting to see the light. The stories are becoming so ridiculous. And what really bothers me is the fact that the humor seems so much more mean-spirited then it used to. Is that just me? Lately in syndication they've only been showing episodes from between 2002 and 2005, and I usually just turn them off. Give us some from the golden era, baby!

    by negative man

Ala SEX AND THE CITY. Season One of THE SIMPSONS is the worst Simpsons season. Period. It was the total "We're lucky to be here...now what do we do..." season. The only show as and at times funnier on TV right now is Malcom in the Middle. Three storylines, less than 30 minutes and put together better than any comedy/drama on TV. I've been watching the Friday repeats of Arrested Development in the effort to 'get it'... Let me tell you, it IS an effort. It's the most bland, middle of the road, here's the tour book to let you know that we're clever as writers shows on TV next to BATTESTAR GALACTICA season two. I know I'll get flamed, but Hell... Either I'm not that smart or I'm smarter than you. ;)

    by osmosis jones

The good news: I've heard that Fox will allow irate fans to call a number and request a case identical in style to the first five seasons. Hopefully that news is true and not just hopeful fanboy bull. As for when the series started goin downhill, the last truly great stem-to-stern season was the 1997/98 one (with the brilliant "Sharry Bobbins" episode and the 007-themed "You Only Move Twice"). There were still decent episodes scatterered throughout the next two or so seasons, but the magic was gone, and everything post-10th season has been appalling. When did this series become Family Guy? Just a bunch of gross/"shocking"/pop culture gags strung together with tons of 4th wall "inside" references back to the show's glory days. I saw part of a rerun from maybe last season where the Santa's Little Helper sires a brood of puppies, and there's actually a moment when someone remarks that this plot sounds familiar, and Lisa pulls out a Simpsons episode guide and thumbs through it to find out what old episode they're rehashing! Simply admitting that a joke is lame or ripped-off from an earlier episode does *not* make it okay!

    by tango fett

As for the state of the show currently, on commentary on Season 5 they talk about how because of commercials and promos the episodes are a few minutes shorter, making it "hard to do side-stories or have decent development." So that might be one problem. But then, the writers are pretty shitty now which is a problem. We need a Conan-esque writer, or better yet Conan himself returning to the show (except the most recent ones like the gay episode and the time travel episode weren't bad).

    by nice marmot

. . . people are arguing big time about the cases. The word is that there is a green colored, traditional case inside the head, which is just a collector's item. I hope that's true, although someone here already said that it isn't. As for the show, I'm just glad that there are a few more seasons coming out that are worth buying on DVD. To me, the decline actually starts in the upcoming season 6 when they have The Critic guest star, coming to town for the film festival. And I agree that the leprechaun jockey episode is the Worst...Show...Ever.

Despite being a dyed-in-the-wool sci-fi loving geek, I've always marveled at the rustic allure presented by cowmen, who are more commonly addressed as cowboys but you can't be too careful in this day and age of Michael Jackson and disreputable priests. Ahem. The boxes are certainly novel, but the same quibble about storage and not fitting in the DVD storage shelves is also mine. And since Season 9 is the true start of the downturn, I'm sure Fox in their wisdom knew they'd have to do something to "jazz up" the later seasons to make collectors choose looks over content more easily.

Oh sure, keep saying that the simpsons is still the best show on tv, family guy is a stupid ripoff of the simpsons, blah blah blah. Of course family guy ripped off old simpsons storylines, but The new simpsons ripped off family guy's bizarre and random sense of humor. only difference is, the Simpsons started to suck when it tried to be like family guy. Sure, family guy has some dull moments, but it's the only show to ever come back from cancelation. EVER. Plus I laugh my ass off whenever it's on.

Yes, I know that the set will fit on the shelf, but that doesn't mean they still don't look cheesy. My interests tend to be on the geeky side (I am posting in Talkback after all), so it's hard enough defending my collection of tv animation, sci-fi, and anime dvds to other adults (ie "normals") without this gimmicky stuff. At least the classy, understated box styles of the South Park and old Simpsons sets allow me to hold on to what little dignity I have left. But Fox knows I would buy this set even if they sold it in a brown paper bag, so they don't really care what I think. This new design is meant to catch the attention of casual fans and Christmas shoppers, and in that, I think they'll succeed. So I understand the reasoning, I accept it, but I don't have to like it. Though, to the person above who had heard that Fox was going to offer an old style case through the mail: Where did you hear this? I'd be more than willing to fork over the extra $5-10! Hope it's true.

    by zerocorpse

And the only reason people force themselves/pretend to like "Firefly" is because it's made by their god, Joss Whedon. If "Firefly" were made by George Lucas (exactly as it is now) you'd hear every single one of those Whedonites bitching about how bad the show is. They are painfully forgiving of Whedon's hack writing. Watch "Battlestar Galactica" for decent scifi, and watch "Firefly" for snarky dialogue and plotlines that would embarass even the writers of "Andromeda."

In the post-public-access age and a time when reality TV poisons

    by childe roland

...it's easy to say the Simpsons in its current form is better than 90% of all TV. Hell, a special about ants is better than 90% of all TV. But in an apples-to-apples comparison (that is, other adult-oriented animated comic fare), the Simpsons is a bottom thirder. Granted, it's near the top of its heat (clearly better than American Dad and Tom Goes to the Mayor), but it's been supplanted by South Park and Family Guy in the upper echelon of the genre. Even relative upstarts like The Venture Brothers, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman are more consistently entertaining and the latter shows typically acheive twice as much funny in an epsiode half as long as a Simpsons show. The Simpsons should've called it an even 10 and then just made Holiday specials (specifically Treehouses of Horror) and movies. They're far too tired and too mired in the corporate merchandising/advertising machine to be topical, much less relevant, and their watered down version of shock/gag humor just pales in comparison to Family Guy and South Park.

    A dose or reality

    by greased deaf guy

"It's kind of cute the way all the little nerdlings get excited when a new Serenity trailer appears. It's gonna break my heart when they're the only ones in the theater on opening night." Found that on movies.com and it's oh so true. Just about a month until the big wake up call...and we won't have to hear about this turd anymore.

    You know, greatn...

    by childe roland

...I happen to enjoy Firefly and was quite the Angel fan (didn't care for Buffy much after Season 3, though), so I'm curious as to where your research, which would clearly classify me as an anomaly, comes from. Is TV Guide now employing some credible statisticians to compile demographic information? And is that information coming from research conducted independent of Neilsen or has that entitiy vastly expanded its standard questionnaire to include viewer opinions of creative types without a show on any of the major networks at the moment? Did you ask 1,000 Firefly fans what they thought of Whedon? Or at least 100? Your mom? Or is it actually you who really doesn't know what he's talking about?

Simpsons Still has one or two great episodes each year

    by cookylamoo

And I don't think there's ever been an episode where I couldn't find one funny thing.

This last season was the best it's been in years

    by mortsleam

There was a palpable sense of adventure, of the writers and artists trying new things, such as the fake "bloopers" of alternate line readings that they put in over the credits. Still nowhere near as good as even Season 10 itself, but there were many more hits than misses this season. Still, my vote for "Worst. Episode. Ever." would have to be the one when Marge became a female bodybuilder. Just a bad storyline, no real laughs, and the most repulsive image (of steroid Marge) that's ever been shown on TV. Aside from any of the character designs for American Dad, that is.

The Simpsons "started sucking" with Season 1...

    by machinder

...in the sense that EVERY season has had it's shitty moments. Every. Single. One. By the same token, EVERY season of the Simpsons has had its moments of greatness. Including the latest season. For those of you who are too young to remember this, people started bitching about how The Simpsons had "jumped the shark" by season four at the latest. "Oh, it's not as good as it used to be"; "Oh, the storylines are too weird now"; "Oh, it's too self-referential". Wah-wah. Nobody here's singing a different tune than what people started belting out in 1992. And if the show sucked - as so many started to claim back then - by season four, why is it that so many of you have such high opinions of seasons five and up (until, at some nebulous point of your own estimation, the show "started sucking")? Because the show has CHANGED since you decided you liked it. It's continued to adapt and renew itself since the beginning. The two lessons here, considering the continued (and indeed unprecedented, for a cartoon) popularity of the Simpsons? ONE: Just because you, personally, stop liking something, it doesn't mean that it sucks now - it's easy enough to find... oh, a few MILLION people who will disagree with you on that one. Just accept that you no longer like it, and move along to something more to your liking. And TWO: Some of you might take a tip from the show and learn to adapt and renew, yourselves. Not that I think anybody who subscribes to the "I don't like it, therefore it sucks" mentality to have the capacity to read a post as long as this all the way through before being distracted by something shiny at the other end of the room.

    Simpsons Is Awful

    by thunderballs

I don't think I have ever seen a show take such a precipitous drop from greatness as The Simpsons. This show used to be absolute genius, and it has turned into such garbage, pure and utter trash, not worthy of the name Simpsons. And really, anyone who doesn't realize how bad it has gotten really doesn't understand what made it good in the first place. The Simpsons, as it stands now, is just a cheap imitation of the great episodes from its heyday. You could argue, but you'd be wrong.

Giving life to a dead talkback

    by scoopbrady

Just read on TVshowsondvd.com that you will be able to call up for an old-style box. Season 6 will come with an insert with a phone # to call. That's all we know right now. Great news. Thanks Fox (For once, not said in a sarcastic manner). And enough with the American Dad bashing already. Character design is flawed, but it's Family Guy without the crutch of asides and flashbacks. Definitely shows some growth for MacFarlane and co. Though I like FG as well.
