From a Gathering, a report on Gargoyles
Another new reporter has filed the following news from Greg Wiseman on the
possibility of a live action Gargoyles movie from Disney. Could be real cool if handled
correctly, here's her report...
I went to The Gathering, a convention for the cartoon
Gargoyles. Greg Wiesman, the creator of the show was there and had some
hopeful news, (hopeful as in a glimmer, not anything assured), about the
live action movie. He said there has been yet another change of the
powers that be at Disney and these are more interested in the movie than
the ones that basically killed the tv show. They made it a higher
priority on their list of movies in development [higher than what I was
afraid to ask]. Also, they have frozen the script writing process for now
lest it get any further from the original series.
I'll spare you the long rant about what I think about whoever wants to
make a Gargoyles movie with only Goliath, and not let Greg Wisemen or
Michael Reeves write the script, (Micheal Reeves was one of the main
writers and both of them have honorary titles with the movie). Actually
the rant is on the general idea of execs noticing that people are moved
enough with any particular person's artistic vision to warrant a movie,
but not to let that person have any meaningful imput making of the movie.
I blame them for all the movies that should have been great but turned out
just plain awful.
Greg Weismen said the effects for the movie are planed to be a combination
of costume, make-up and CGI. He also said the name of the guy doing the
first two with some excitement, but I forgot who it was.
Also, due to the new friendlier climate he was going to bring back to
Disney's attention some of the spin-off cartoon series that were in the
works as part of Disney's plan to make their own action/adventure universe
but got canceled along with the show. [ie. Bad Guys, New Olympians, etc.]
Not that I need an alias, but call me Agnes Nutter if you find this
postworthy.

I heard something about Disney running the reruns on Toon Disney, (not that I know anyone who gets the station), but a guy told me it wasn't in the listings when he checked. Anyone know if they mean to run it?

TIPPET STUDIOS ARE DOING THE CG TSETS. LOOKS LIKE DISNEY IS VERY SERIOUS ABOUT THIS PROJECT AS THEY JUST PASSED ON SOMETHING MUCH GREATER BECAUSE OF THE STATE OF GARGOYLES. WELL WE WILL SEE WHO WINS IN A FEW YEARS.

Wow! Nice to see that there are other Gargoyles fans out there in the rest of the sci-fi world. I too think Gargoyles is one of the best sci-fi creations of all time, which just happened to be animated. I still have a hard time believing that Disney could have allowed such a dark and bizarre, yet strangely beautiful and consistent series to be produced.
I worry though, that Disney will produce this live action movie, without the direction or leadership of Greg Weisman, and will remove all the elements that made Gargoyles great, such as the interaction of dynamic - neither good nor evil - characters, the deeply interwoven episodic format within the arc structure, and the bizarre (but strangely logical) plot twists.
Structurally, I have found many similarities with Gargoyles in the new series called, Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict...more than any other. We have a detailed article on this on our web site. Any Gargoyles fans out there who have followed EFC might be interested in this. We would appreciate feed back. (There is also a Babylon 5 article that contrasts more than compares.)

What was the other project Tippets studio passed on for Gargoyles? It may seem strange for a big fan of a show like myself not to be excited for the show's movie in and of itself, but I see a live action really as a means to an end. The fact that it is live and not animated tells me either that they don't respect the medium and tone of the original or that they think, due to the general unenlightened view of cartoons, the movie would not have the mass appeal to make money if it isn't live. The latter is the more forgivable of the two- but both are completely forgivable if they bring about the desired end- the renewal of the original story. I will definately go and see the movie [if and]when it comes out, maybe multiple times. If the movie drums up interested great- if the movie itself is good in its own right- a wonderful bonus. So in the end I am curious what other movies are passed over for Gargoyles.
