VERONICA MARS Joins FIREFLY For Friday-Night Rerun FunClub!!

Published at:  Jul 29, 2005 12:12:59 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Starting last Friday, the SciFi Channel began televising “Firefly,” the best new show of the 2002-03 season. SciFi will be the first outlet to televise all 15 hours of the much-beloved sci-fi action comedy-drama. (Fox only aired 12 of those hours.)

Starting this Thursday, Logo (the exciting new homosexual channel) began televising “Wonderfalls,” the best new show of the 2003-04 season. Logo will be the first outlet to televise all 13 hours of the much-beloved romantic comedy-fantasy. (Fox only aired four of those hours.) If you missed it, Logo airs the "Wonderfalls" pilot twice more this weekend.

Starting tonight (Friday), CBS (sister to the exciting new homosexual channel) begins televising “Veronica Mars,” perhaps the best new show of 2004-05 season not called “Battlestar Galactica.” CBS will not be the first to televise all 22 hours of the much-beloved crime comedy-drama. (UPN already aired all 22 hours, and was good enough to renew the show for a second season. Unlike some netlets I could think of.)

CBS will air four “Veronica” episodes. Both the show’s amazing pilot and “Echolls Family Christmas” airs July 29. “Clash of the Tritons” airs Aug. 5. “Russkie Business,” which introduced the Alyson Hannigan character, actress Trina Echolls, airs Aug. 12. This is great news for all who don’t live in an area that UPN services (turns out there’s lots of these), but have grown very curious about the show many are calling “The New Buffy.”

“Firefly” 7 p.m. Friday. SciFi.

“Veronica Mars” 8 p.m. Friday. CBS.

“Wonderfalls” 9 p.m. Saturday. Logo.

Were Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader two different people in the early drafts of “The Empire Strikes Back”? All is revealed in The Annotated Screenplays (Star Wars, Episodes IV-VI)!!

Look! A fabulous new book co-edited by big-deal "Buffy"-"Firefly"-"Gilmore Girls" TV writer Jane Espenson. She introduces each of the essays, and the whole book besides:

Finding Serenity: Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly!!

Look! A new book by
“Freaks & Geeks” creator Paul Feig!
Superstud: Or How I Became a 24-Year-Old Virgin!!

Look! Christina Ricci cavorts nakedly!
Prozac Nation on DVD!!

Look! Original casting tapes! Deleted scenes!
Audio commentaries! Backstage with Drive Shaft!
Lost: The Complete First Season on DVD!!

The Triton episode almost turned me off

    by gheorghe zamfir

One of the first few episodes I tuned in for, and almost didn't bother coming back after that one. Especially when it breaks into Veronica's karaoke scene, complete with the kaa-razzy camera angles and the cheering crowd. Must not have been too terrible though since I did come back for more. Sadly I don't get Logo, well, not too sadly, looking at their programming schedule it doesn't look like I missing out on much, or anything really.

Fox (the channel, not Fox News.) sucks. Wonderfalls and Firefly are 2 great series. I would rather see firefly in a higher-budget big screen form though. Give me a trilogy please!!!

Wonderfalls got kind of ehh towards the end. But it was still better than most stuff on tv.

And Veronica Mars is my new favorite show, because of those UPN re-runs.

if I don't get into a show from the beginning, I usually have trouble picking it up. The only reason why I've been able to jump in and out of the soprano's is because I saw most of the first season when they aired them uncut on basic cable here in canada. I got into Buffy from the pilot, and my mom and sister eventually caught on later ironically enough. The pilot airs tonight? Maybe I'll tape it.

    by big jim

to air all episodes of Wonderfalls & Firefly. Space has been airing Firefly in intended order for about 2 years now, and Vision TV began showing all episodes of Wonderfalls last September. But on the downside, CTV preempted Veronica Mars last night to air that new lawyer show. So I turned it off and watched Soap on dvd.

    by flem_snopes

I'm kind of looking forward to Veronica Mars. We're one of those areas with no UPN outlet. Its hard to tell how good it will be because the hype's not very substantial. What's so good about it? The characters? The writing? The originality? I've been recommending it to friends who like "good" TV (Wonderfalls, Six Feet Under, Dead Like Me, etc.) Will it be sophisticated enough for their (and my) tastes?

Wanna bitch about Fox's cancelling of good shows? It's

    by lostoptimist

In the last couple years they killed...1) Andy Richter Controls the Universe; 2) Tick - Live Action Version; 3) Greg The Bunny (which created the single greatest muppet/puppet to grace the airwaves since the Swedish Chef: 'Count Blah'). Throw in past cancellations like PROFIT, ACTION, and GET A LIFE and it's a sad case of...well, not knowing what they've got, I guess. Still, the single greatest cancellation blunder of all time was UPN's early dismissal of NOWHERE MAN, which to this day remains the greatest single show the channel ever aired.

    by jackdonkey

I think if veronica mars has a third season it will be a solid show. The first two seasons of Buffy survived because it was on a new network and Buffy was really hot, the show itself didn't get good until season 3. In the Totem Mole episode in wonderfalls I was really starting to think because it appeared there may be something deeper and darker to the voices she was hearing or at very least the voices had much more purpose than her dating some dood who's ass rings. Then they had to bland it all up and end it with the relationship thing. If I had my own network it would be firefly/wonderfalls/dead like me/ kung fu reruns/a norm macdonald show/movies like ghost world/the tick/anything Bryan fuller does/futurama/maybe some japanese stuff like INitial D too.

too bad they keep pushing them aside for the Idols and every other new reality show that comes along. Would have been nice if they had advertised the move (take 5 seconds right at 8pm and announce "Veronica Mars moves to Sunday nights", then start the lawyer show). They did the same thing with Empire - they just stopped showing it but never bothered to tell anyone (TV Guide still listed Empire on CTV 3 weeks after CTV stopped airing it).

I have to check what we talked about again to make a point by point comparison, but the first thing I thought was "Oh my God, someone was taking notes." Either we're all geniuses, or the fixes were all obvious to anybody familiar with the source material, or . . . FUCK! It's like the Twilight Zone. Shit, maybe AICN really does have some effect on decisions in Hollywood, or when you write into those sites you do get listend to or . . . FUCK! My head is spinning. They pulled "From the Creator of," they really did it. Applause all way around. Especially to Joss, because I suspect he had to sign off on that one. FUCK!

    by mark twain

I gotta admit, my thoughts echoed yours Jeremiah. Uncanny, was the word that came to mind. Although I think it's unlikely that someone at Universal thought, "Drop everything else, fixing that Serenity trailer is priority numero uno! And I want it done next week, do you hear me? Next week or heads will roll!" Still, it is gratifying to know that someone is actively working on the promotion side of this film and not just dumping it into a graveyard slot. That someone else saw what seems obvious to some of us, and did something about it, well, that's something (in my best Jayne voice when addressing the mudders). Anyone know if this new trailer is in the theaters yet? I'd like to see reactions to this one, just can't think of a film that I'm needing to see this weekend.

Not looking good in terms of a natural fit for the trailer. Looks like I'll wait till next week. It looks like they've decided to push the sci-fi angle a little harder, based on the new slogan and home page for the movie. That makes nothing but sense since I suspect the best exposure is going to be those reruns. I remember when Goldmember came out, it seemed like you couldn't turn on cable without seeing either of the Austin Powers films in the weeks leading up to the release in theaters. There was no way you were unaware that the new film was out there. While sci-fi isn't gonna have the reach of TBS or whatever I saw AP on, it would be an odd choice not to piggyback on the exposure. Just wasn't sure that choice was going to be made, the way things were looking.

I gave the show a chance, like you asked. While I like the overall theme of the mystery over the course of a season, the "Clue club" thing got old in the second epp they aired tonight. Plus, being someone who grew up in Southern California, I can tell you with 100% honesty that the biker guy would have kicked those guys asses every second he had the chance to do so, and never would have ended up playing poker with them. I know its television and I shouldn't take it so seriously, but it seems like the same old stuff repackaged. I may give it another try when a new eppisode airs, but I watched it, and thought it was average at best. Sorry.

I have changed my opinion of Firefly

    by razorback

After watching it a second time and now watching the shows again on Sci-Fi (so a third time), I do feel more for the characters and the storyline. I may even change my opinion of Serenity when I see it again. However, I still think Joss Whedon is a fucktard and the Browncoaters deserve to die for trying to force buzz about a show and movie that are, at best, good. If every single one of the goes to see this movie 20 times it may make $100 million. So prove your loyalty.

    Razorback

    by prophet jeremiah

First, it's the exception, not the rule that someone admits to changing an opinion about a show. So props, man. I'm not a Browncoat, but always did like the series. Yeah, the Whedonites can get a little much some times, but no more so than the trekkies or any other group. I admire the Browncoats for their efforts, and even did my small part to support changing the Serenity trailer (discussed on a previous talkbalk) becuase I like science fiction in general and want to support it, even if the show may not be my favorite of all time. Galactica is my favorite show now, and it looks to have at least a third season unless something goes terribly wrong. As a fan of that show though, if it was in danger of being cancelled before there was resolution of the story lines, I think I might be beating the drums too and belong to what would become an equally annoying "Save Galactica" group. It's not as bad as it used to be, but sometimes we lovers of sci-fi have to fight a little harder for the shows we love. I'll pretty much sign any fanboy related drive to keep a sci-fi show on the air, because mine could be on the chopping block next and I'd hope for some reciprocation.

I have been watching the Firefly episodes in dvd order, and while I was ready to sing the show's praises to the high heavens after the stunnigly good (for tv especially) pilot, it has slowed down a might. I dont know if I would be still watching if this were weekly and I had started out on some of these first episodes. ('our mrs reynolds' was the last one I watched) what happened to the lightning bug effect whenever the ship takes off in space? that made the ship cool, and might have eventually been on par with something like the warp into space at the end of next generation episodes. ("Engage.") I dont know I'm in the middle right now, but there have already been some dull and bad episodes, even though the acting by the crew of the Firefly is still top-notch. did Fox cut their money at episode 2 or something?

    The Early Episodes Were Weaker

    by prophet jeremiah

I don't know which one you're on, but I think The Train Job was one of the weakest of the bunch (fun ending though) and they aired that right after the pilot. The later ones are all much better, but part of that is due to the character work established in the early episodes. So while not all the early ones by themselves are jump up and down great, they pay off later. At least that's my take on it. There are others who will tell you that every episode is brilliant. That's not my opinion, but I thought it developed chemistry much faster than most first season shows and some of the best episodes in that short run are great television.

It's true, it can happen. I never cared for Angel, Buffy was all right and had some really fun moments, Alien Resurrection ate a pound o' penis. Firefly IS different than those shows though. I don't like everything Spielberg did as a director, but even if I don't like one of his movies I'll give the next one a chance. Whedon is one of those like Sorkin I'll at least look at whatever it is they do next.

    Veronica Mars

    by k8ee

Any show that has quotes like "You won a trophy for a rim job?" and "Everybody Wang Chung or I'll kick your ass!" is worth watching in my opinion.

I'm done with the self-important dreck that Lost has become. I don't think the writers know what's going on anymore - if they ever did.

    Veronica Mars

    by flem_snopes

Well, I watched it and will watch it again and I can see how it would improve over time. Still, I can't help thinking those bike gang members should be edgier and darker and with Veronica giving everyone shit I'm surprised someone just doesn't bash her brains in. But I do like the fact that she doesn't have much money, and the interaction between father and daughter is pretty good. The pilot was much better than the Christmas eposiode. And I think people who hadn't seen it before were probably a bit irked that there wasn't any continuity. I did like the line, "The butler's son did it." Definitely a notch or two below Buffy, Six Feet Under, etc. but still better than average.

    Buffy vs Veronica

    by shadowsorkin07

Snopes, as a first time watcher, I did find it a little odd about the diffrence between the two shows. That being said, sorry, but it is a hell of a lot better then nine out of ten Buffys. And I mean both episodes by that, not just the pilot.

    Buffy vs Veronica

    by flem_snopes

Sorkin, I hear you, I won't argue, these things are pretty much a matter of personal taste anyway. But I perceive that I cut Buffy more slack because it is clearly based in a universe that is totally different from reality and kind of whack. Whereas with Veronica I'm going in thinking real world and then judging by those standards. No big deal. And like I say, I'll watch again.

    Buffy AND Veronica...

    by zerocorpse

AND Firefly. They all suck, they all rely on quirky, unrealistic dialogue that's about two steps removed from the average episode of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I'm surprised none of those shows uses a laugh track. I'll stick with Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica in between episodes of CSI, South Park, Daily Show, and Chapelle (if he ever comes back).

    Buffy and Veronica

Ok, I'll be the first to attack Joss shows, but saying they are closely linked to Sabrina is just way to below the belt. Also, both Doctor Who and Battlestar aren't nearly as good of shows as West Wing, or more importantly, 24.

actually, Logo isn't the first to broadcast all eps...

    by matrix69

"Logo will be the first outlet to televise all 13 hours of the much-beloved romantic comedy-fantasy." Wrong. Canada's Vision TV has aired all of 'em -- in order -- several times now. http://www.visiontv.ca/Programs/drama_wonderfalls.html
