V FOR VENDETTA trailer has hit!!!

Published at:  Jul 22, 2005 5:18:25 PM CDT

Okay, only about an hour late, but they've finally posted the trailer! Click below and enjoy!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Me and about 6499 other geeks got a look at this trailer last weekend at COMIC-CON and now they've finally released it online. They said they're launching at 6pm EST, which it is now almost 10 minutes past... the trailers still not up, but the link to the official site is below, so keep checking it until you strike paydirt!

I love the look of the official website's trailer page. Very forkin' cool and just as I'd imagine V's screening room to look like... suspiciously like Harry's house... Does this mean Harry is behind that mask? Well, that'd be a nice twist, wouldn't it?

CLICK IT HERE FOR BALD PORTMAN, FLYING DAGGERS AND WHISPERY HUGO... EVENTUALLY!

Quint's the one who commented on the slo-mo knives thingee, right? Well, regardless of who did, yeah, they should get rid of that shot. It looks pretty goofy. But the rest of it looks interesting. I didn't really get to hear the trailer and I only caught the last 10 seconds or so, so I'm hoping they'll get the thing up by the end of the night.

Great job keeping the aliens out of the trailer, it just makes me wonder what they're going to look like. I think it's bloody brilliant moving the whole thing to England. I always wondered how the rest of the world was fighting the lizards. Anyone know if any of the original cast like Michael Ironside or Marc Singer has an appearance in this? A great way to update this, looks much better than Bad News Bears. This is how you remake something right!

As for the trailer? It was ok. I wasn't thrilled. Natalie Portman was good, V kinda seemed goofy to me. I've read the comics so don't jump on me fanboys! He just didn't move right. V's voice isn't like anything I haven't heard either, it's Hugo Weaving talking a little whispier. I'm still hoping for the best though.

Yes, the graphic novel was literate and complex, but I don't think it put a new spin on your standard future fascism story. It was never my favorite work by Moore, anyway, but not as bad as that graphic novel (or was it limited series?) that featured Nixon's brain as president and Burger Companies controlling South America. That was shite. (What?? I don't think everything Alan Moore has written is a masterpiece? May I burn in hell for my blasphemey)

Or were there? The guy in the mask could have been a lizard in disguise. That would be a great spin on the series, if a totalitarian government came to power on "Lizard Fear," and the resistance was now fighting the government with the help of good lizards like Robert Englund. This trailer raises a lot of questions, but I got to admit I like it. It makes you wonder who you should be rooting for.

    by phloton

There should be a heavy atmospheric look to the film. It should be thick and steamy and evocative of the graphic novel. This movie looks too clean. And what I mean by a heavy look, they only example I can give off the top of my head is Das Boot, where Jost Vacano filled every shot with smoke before shooting. It gives the film a look that you can almost feel with your fingers. But oh well, they shot what they shot, and it's too late to do anything about it. I don't like Hugo Weaving's voice either. It doesn't have that touch of madness I heard in my head when reading the book.

All good fiction will reflect the time in which it's written. The best will also reflect the time in which it's read, whatver that time is. Rich Johnston - him again - was spot on about Moore's book though. There's no questioning him on that. Mr. Coin - I agree that some of Moore's produce has been... lesser than the rest.

And with London looking less like it was generated inside a PC with the controls set to 'shiny'. The art in the original was grimy and bleached out and , to be honest, shit. But at least it looked like London. Which is grimy, bleached out and shit.
"What was done to me was monstrous" - don't like the implication of that. Are we going to see more of the original incarceration of V and therefore more of his identity? Hope not. Also the thing about killing hundreds of thousands of people - really sounds like an unnecessary bit of plot thrown in there. Hugo Weaving - he sounds like he's talking about throwing this fascist government back INTO THE FIERY CHASM FROM WHENCE IT CAME. I would like V to have a thick Brummy accent. Timothy Spall for V!! And what was with those shitty cop badges? I hate how in movies, fascist governments always use the SAME logo in all branches of government. OK the Nazis had the swastika but for example, the SS had those wacky lighning bolt letters. Not these guys - one weird red grid thing is good enough for everyone. Pretty much the best bit was when he had a bomb strapped to himself. Fucking hilarious. Good timing releasing that today guys!

It just seemed to slick. I would've loved a David Fincher look ... or Batman Begins look to this movie. The comic does take place in a present day, but the art direction makes it seem like its set in an older world. V looks kinda ridiculous in the world they've put him in.

    by milkybar

Timing of the release of this trailer could have been sooo much better.... yes life needs to go on, and yes, we can't allow ourselves to adjust... but a trailer for a film about a terrorist/freedom fighter in the UK operating on a cell basis, of polar fundamentalist views, and featuring a man with explosives strapped to his waist and primed to go? Nice timing.....

Film, however, looks 50-50 - shiny London looks more like the contents of the Matrix than the run down shitehole it should look like, but any movie with a who's who of the British theatrical royalty, led by the god-like John Hurt playing the antithesis of his Winston from 1984 (oh, that irony is both juicy and delicious) has got to be worth a look.... just wish they could have found someone British to play V... love Weaving, but I am concerned they will make him an Agent Smith-a-like rather than the V of the book....

    by inspectordoppler

I think it's the compression at least - watching it on a 23" HD LCD set to 1920x1280, and the bright stuff looks brilliant, but there's horrendous digital swarming in the blacks or anything slightly dark. Anyone else? I'm a little amazed they bothered with an HD trailer if it's going to look crappier than the SD.

crying like a twat and showing a modicum of decency - this film was in production long before these arseholes decided to set off bombs left right and centre, and if I remember right, there were bombs doing just that when the original GN was released

I don't think we should change our lives - hell, I have been on the receiving side of 3 near calls when the IRA ramped up again in 96 post Canary Wharf - thanks to the boys in the Bomb squad I am here typing this. I lost friends to the troubles, lost another in the towers on 9/11, but the last thing I would ever do is advocate changing lifestyles and what we do because there is the remote chance you may be on the end of a madman. I do, however, think there could have been a delay of 2, maybe 3 days in releasing this trailer - at least give a decent space after the activities of the past 48 hours

In the end she could get her sisters Shondetta, Cloretta, and Velvetta together to stomp a giant mudhole in whitey's ass.

What is the statute of limitations between the time when some event happens and the moment where we can safely view media vaguely related to said event without fear of hurting anyone's sensibilities? Besides, as someone who never read the comic and has only seen the trailer once, I didn't make any connection with terrorism. I mean there's some guy in a goofy mask blowing shit up, Natalie Portman is apparently undergoing chemo-therapy and there's a voiceover guy with an accent whose identity was nagging at me until I read who he was in the credits. That's all I got from it. People don't need to be treated like Fabrege eggs, especially not now.

And no horse. Where's the horse? Anyway, I digress...trailer looks realtively okay. It seems nicely shot and I particularly like some of the dialogue. Casting seems pretty damn good as well (as a person who's only had a passing interest in the comics). From what I've seen the Production Design during the political rally's look a bit shoddy but that's about that I guess. Not too much point in critiquing the film based on the trailer but as trailers go I'm not clamouring to see this film...even though I will end up doing so.

its blades again: swords and knives and kung fu... why can't an action hero use a gun anymore? I know this is the way the orignal comic is, but no doubt thats why this movie was made in the first place. Its another story where a guy uses various sizes of blades and seems to be against using any kind of modern weaponry. Im tired of that. And Kung Fu is really getting tiresome too. I guess they can get a pg-13 easier that way. But I think it has something to do with political correctness too. Its gun-control for the screen.

10 tips to make a low budget DV film look BETTER!

    by mrnelson

    1. When actors are not experienced: use 'listening shots' in your edit. Dont't show the actor who's talking all the time.
    2. Hire a cameraman who knows how to set up a scene.
    3. Use light! Existing or brought in. And try to shoot at magic hour. It works like... magic.
    4. Don't use male actors with pony tales or fixed mullets.
    5. If you wanna shoot an ode to your favorite movie use the 180 degrees aproach.
    6. In post make the film as long as the material allows you to. Less is more.
    7. In post hire someone who can make MiniDV look like film: use After Effects!
    8. When in film school think film and not movie.
    9. Watch and learn. Watch and learn. Watch and learn. From others and from DVDs. I read an interview with the director of November. Find it and read it!
    10. When your low budget is finished plug it modest. COME IN PEACE!

The whole point of V's terror campaign is his line about "Governments should be afraid of the people". I mean he's out to smash a fascist state for fuck's sake, not kill innocent people on the Tube. I feel like a lot of times when stuff gets pulled or altered out of 'respect' it's more done out of fear of the media and how shitty tabloids will react. People in London have been putting up with bombing campaigns for 30 odd years and getting on with their lives. This 9-11 style hand-wringing we've seen in some elements of the media and that werenotafraid.com bollocks - that isn't the way Londoners really feel. The film-making is competent for low-budget. That's the important thing. But he should stick to the directing end of things and leave the writing to people who can actually write. Also, stay away from low budget sci-fi. It just doesn't work and amateur actors cannot pull it off. It just comes across as silly and stilted. Take a look at something like "Pi" to see how a low budget flick with sci-fi overtones was done well.

my first exposure came from a song by John Lennon where he says, in the final line, "remember, the 5th of November" then there is the sound of an explosion. i was curious what that meant and looked it up, where i read about Guy Fawkes and his blowing-up-Parliment ways. i thought the holiday was a celebration of his anarchist position, but i suppose i was wrong. great comic, btw, this V for Vendetta. hopefully the film will do it justice. but i'm not holding my breath.

Your butt buddy Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed has some messages for you from the religio of peace: n an interview with Reuters, Bakri described Osama bin Laden, leader of the radical Islamist network al Qaeda, as "a sincere man who fights against evil forces."Bakri said he would like Britain to become an Islamic state but feared he would be deported before his dream was realized.

"I would like to see the Islamic flag fly, not only over number 10 Downing Street, but over the whole world," he said."But I think that would be political suicide for the British government if they started to deport and imprison all extremists and radicals," he said.

"Because if, God forbid, something happened again, they would have nobody left to blame."

That was a great fucking trailer, in my opinion. Wow. I've never read the "V for Vendetta" comic, so I'm only reacting from my gut-level, but that looked intense. I love the fact a movie with the tagline "People shouldn't be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid their people" is being released. This looks like a far cry from the fatuous, PG-13 films tailor made for the teenage consumer demographic. I think it takes balls to make a film like this right now. I'll be there opening night.

  • For those that don't know: In 1605 a group of English Catholics tried to assassinate King James I along with MP's, by attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Catholics were persecuted at that time under the rule of Queen Victoria I, and when King James failed to redress the balance, a group of old time terrorists, led by one Guy Fawkes, took matters into their own hands- and failed. Hence Bonfire Night, celebrated here in the UK every November 5th with fireworks and burnt effigy's of Mr Fawkes atop bonfires. To criticise V for ripping off Zorro et al... you might as well bitch about EVERY damn comicbook movie ever made.

The Guy Fawkes thing - I grew up in a Catholic family and it always pissed me off how Guy Fawkes night was a celebration of his arrest. Fuck that - I'd like it to be a celebration of his attempt to blow up the fucking monarchy. So I liked this aspect of V. Red Lantern - I hope you are joking about the American thing. Fraud. The defendant intentionally misrepresented a fact (or pretended to know a fact which he did not know); the plaintiff reasonably relied on that representation to his detriment. e.g. Landoasskissian told a fellow talkbacker he could get him a Big Mac and fries. Lando failed to live up to this promise and pretended to have another job rather than do his job. Fellow talkbacker suffers rumblings in his tummy and feelings of betrayal.

Thanks for the information Kuryakin and Dr. Boll. I guess if he was born in The United Kingdom, that explains English being his second language. Is Aramaic his first then? My African geography is not so good, so excuse me in advance for not knowing what part of that continent the UK is in. He definitely writes in English well though, much better than people who were born here. Personally it doesn't matter to me, a lot of the best Americans were immigrants, they seem to get the concept of what America is better than so many people born here who take things for granted. Sad but true.

Yes he went to a good school. After his twefth birthday however he was sodomised on a weekly basis by a gym instructor who gave him a rating every time. This was the basis for his "Top Ten " series. Afterwards he was instructed in the ways of magic by arious DC characters who he decided to emulate in his famous "Watchmen" series. Not a lot of people know, however, that the show was originally titled "Boxmen" from his time working in a factory putting together cardboard boxes for the UK Egg Council. His story sounds typical of a lot of African refugees, forced sex is still going there with teenagers in countries like the UK so you can believe they appreciate the good old US of A when they get here. It's interesting that he incorporated those real life experiences into his work. That explains why it's so dark too.

    re London shooting

    by docpazuzu

Naturally it's regrettable when innocent people are mistakenly killed. However, the fellow in question was seen exiting a building which was under surveillance by the police who suspected it of housing terrorists and/or people with terrorist sympathies. Also, the word had gone out earlier that the police had orders to shoot to kill any suspected bombers in a situation where they might harm others. The Brazilian was hailed and challenged by police attempting to make an arrest but decided to flee from them. Not only that, he fled onto a subway train. Fearing the imminent detonation of another bomb, the police did their duty to protect the citizenry and took the suspect out. The fault of the "bad shooting" lies with the victim himself, who frankly should have known better -- especially if he was innocent. The police had less than split seconds to decide on a course of action in order to prevent the loss of many innocent lives. What if they had waited a few seconds more? Maybe his life would have been spared, yes. But if he was carrying a bomb, that would have been enough time to detonate it. As far as I'm concerned, the police handled the situation in the only way possible. Oh, and anyone who writes things like "LIEberal", "Khristian", "DEMONcrat" or "Republikan" is an utter asshat.

If Moore wanted it, his name would be up there, too. You think he'd take a page from Frank Miller's book and involve himself. A few things to consider, a lot of immigrants to places like the US, UK, Australia and the like come from countries where they fear their police forces, often these countries have police that are corrupt and even frequently murder their own citizens. It's not an easy habit to shake. At best some people are suspicious and sometimes they run from men with guns with plus or minus uniforms - maybe especially uniforms.

A young man pamicked, reacted with fear, and because of that, he's dead. And please don't protest his possible guilt... The MET office have absolved him completely of any blame or part in any terrorist activity, so please don't resort to 'well, why did he run' styled paranoid remarks. Am I against terror? Absolutely. Are the terrorists having a field day with this latest incident, which, I can assure you has scared a lot of freedom loving people just as much as a legitimate terror attack? Absolutely. This is exactly the kind of fear and panic they wish to inspire. I would like to point out that I understand why you won't take my word on any of this stuff- We're strangers, on opposite continents. A 27 year old man, understands English (been in UK for 4 years), jumps over ticket barriers and runs onto a train the day after suicide bomb attempts on our transport system? Either there's more to it and he had something to hide, or he was the stupidest man in Britain.

  • When I heard about this incident with the shooting in the UK, I remembered what happened to guy called Stephen Waldorf back in the 80's in the UK. He was shot multiple times by police in a case of mistaken identity.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/january/14/newsid_2530000/2530649.stm

At the time he was in a car. Unknown to him, he had a passing resemblance to an escaped criminal. In a chain of particularly tragic co-incidences, a woman in the same car as him was the girlfriend or ex-girlfriend of the guy they were after. Stephen Waldorf didn't know the guy they were after at all - he'd never even met him. Then when they had the car staked out there was a sound that was thought to be a gunshot (it wasn't - no-one had a gun) and this guy was shot multiple times by police snipers. It turned out to be a miracle he'd survived the whole incident. The point here is sometimes the police walk a fine line in these situations and it really does suck when you're on the wrong side of a mistake like this. A police spokesman did apologise about the mistake but said something along the lines that this guy "should have been more careful about who he associates with" but his answer to that was along the line of "how did I know this woman in the car knew this criminal, I'd never even heard of him". Furthermore, he was just seated in the car doing nothing and they shot him. All unlucky co-incidence when it was investigated but still - bad, bad bad for the man who was shot.

I'm sure the police are trawling these boards looking for great minds to enlighten them and provide them with clues but unfortunately, despite the "why did he run?" brigade, he was innocent. Now he's dead because of over-zealous and paranoid police tactics. Tactics earned from Israeli police incidentally. We all know how liberal they are. And Lando - please, your personal insults are lacking in wit. I'd love to read one of scripts sometime but I may have already seen one of them in production. Which episode of Barney did you write?

Which, if he had been a terrorist with a bomb, would have saved lots of innocent lives. The fact that he was completely innocent doesn't make the actions of the police anything but honorable in what was a very difficult situation. If he had been a terrorist everyone would be complimenting the officers for their quick thinking and specialist training. Attacking the police in this instance is a cheap way to gain political points because you're absolving the victim of all responsibility for the chain of events leading to his unfortunate death. I still say the police did their job, and did it well. They reacted in exactly the right way given the circumstances. A sad side effect of this whole debacle is that the next time something like this happens the police will most likely hesitate and the deliberate wholesale slaughter of innocents may be the result.

But Doc, I have to bring back up a point Shan made- Some immigrants come from countries where people in positions of authority, especially police, are to be feared, and when they chase you, you run. And this is a particularly strong example of this- a Brazillian, from a country with problems of police corruption, and, lets not forget, a country that operated death squads through the eighties. Given the background, the decision to flee in panic, while regrettable, is surely insufficient grounds for termination. Put yourself in his background, his shoes. Does the penalty not seem harsh in that light? We have to understand that we don't all come from similar backgrounds, and personal experience differs from case to case...

I'm not arguing against that. I personally feel that after so many years in Britain he should have known better, but even if that isn't the case and the guy was responding to years of the social and cultural imprint of his homeland, it doesn't mean that the police were at fault. I feel terrible about the mistake made, but I'm also disgusted by people who use the death of this innocent to bash the police. It was a very difficult situation and the police acted the way they should have given the intelligence they had, the possible threat and the actions of the suspect. No matter how much we find out about the victim afterwards, we can't go back in time and retroactively say the cops should have "known better."

Over zealous? As Doc just said, if he had been a genuine threat... it doesn't bear thinking about. The fact is, in the current climate, running from armed police onto public transport is stupid. The last couple of weeks, travelling on the London Underground, people do act differently. The last thing I want to see right now is someone jumping the barriers, running down platforms. It's foolish behaviour. Unfortunate as the result this time was, the police acted entirely correctly. And I (and the majority of Londoners)feel safer as a result.

    by docpazuzu

No, Britain isn't Israel, and yes, you've dealt with IRA bombings earlier. However, even you must be able to see the diffent nature of the latest attacks in London compared to the IRA atrocities. Even you have to see that the latest attacks have a lot in common with the kinds of threats Israeli civilians deal with on public transportation. Given these new similarities, I'd say the British police are wise to learn new tactics from foreign police forces with more experience in dealing with this type of threat. I'd be very interested to hear what YOU think the police should have done in that situation.

    by lone fox

Much as I hate to say it, to their credit warnings were given. Their primary aim was to cause disruption. The Islamic fanatics are intent on killing. Suicide bombing is infinitely more of a threat that must be treated differently. They would rather die than surrender, taking as many of us with them as possible. It's a totally different situation.

    Alright Doc...

    by markreed85

Okay. I can see neither of us is making any headway with each other, and thats fine- the bread and butter of democracy, even. Not too comfortable with your disgust- I mean, I don't know if you feel I in particular am 'bashing' the police over this. I'm not trying to score points, I'm genuinely concerned, and my heart goes out to the guy's family, and indeed the officer's involved, who I'm sure acted in good faith, however misplaced I feel that faith was. It was a tough choice, and the road ahead for them will not be easy. If I'm misinterpreting your disgust, and it's directed at someone or something else, then I apologise. There's a distinct difference between reasoned debate on a topic and blatant naysaying. We must be able to discuss these events and moments in history, so that we may learn from them. And we must be able to do so without fear of being branded unpatriotic. "Either you're with us... Or you're against us" is not a phrase that inspires hope in some of us that we are free to question... But I'm rambling now. Agree to disagree?

I think everyone can sympathize with the police for mistakenly killing an innocent man, however challenging the circumstances. But to stifle debate on the appropriateness of their reaction is dangerous. The point is, you knucklehead brain-washed war-supporters had been warned that if you invaded Iraq terrorism would get worse, and it has. I live in London and these bombs are going off on my doorstep, and while we all hate the terrorists for the way they target the innocent, we also remember who got us into this mess.

But sometimes people are just too stupid to live. If eyewitness accounts from non-security-service Britons have been reported accurately, we have a guy who went out the day after a terrorist bombing wearing a heavy padded jacket in the July heat, and then ran from police, jumped a turnstile and headed towards a subway train. Next time just shoot yourself in the head and save the taxpayers the $1.50 [or its pounds equivalent] than the ammunition cost. When you run from the police, bad things can happen.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Or continue to be an asshole. Either way. Dog Of Mystery, bullshit. Yes, the London bombings are undoubtedly down to our involvement in the war. Perhaps you can justify the 9/11 attacks also? They were asking for it? It can't be justified. Our presence is required in Iraq. I'm sure you're convinced things would be oh so sweeter if we let the Middle East sort its own problems out, as it has done throughout its violent history. Things sure were better under Saddams regime of mass genocide. From a Londoner, no less.

Dog, you Mysteriously wrote, "...to stifle debate on the appropriateness of [the police's] reaction is dangerous." I hear what you're saying about the recent shooting, but I disagree that DocPazuzu was trying to stifle debate. He presented his opinion about the situation in a clear, concise manner. How does this stifle debate? If anything, it's promoted debate. Give Doc a break. Also, you don't know anything about Doc's politics. You wrote, "...you knucklehead brain-washed war-supporters had been warned that if you invaded Iraq terrorism would get worse, and it has." I don't disagree that the situation has become increasingly tenuous, and I'm not happy with the way America has conducted its business, but you don't have enough evidence to proclaim Doc is a brain-washed war-supporter. That's disingenuous, black and white thinking, in my opinion. What would you have done if you were those policemen? Shoot or let the guy run?

... when travelling on the London Underground, when two or three guys suddenly draw guns and order me to get down on the ground as I enter the station, DO NOT vault over the turnstile, DO NOT sprint down the escalator, DO NOT barge my way onto the waiting train and DO NOT get in the way of five warning shots. The poor guy must have had a screw loose or something, because panicky behaviour in a tube station is ill advised at the best of times - especially 2 weeks after a bombing and 24 hours after an attempted bombing. I'm sure this will go on for ever.

I don't suffer cell phones pricks in movie theaters so why should I see the humor in a giggling dick like you disrupting a show? As for your hideously simplistic analysis of the causes behind the terrorist attacks, it's like saying that the reason for the London blitz during WWII was Britain's decision to wage war on Nazi Germany. this isn't a crackpot theory -- this is the LAW. the man outed and put into jeopardy a foreign CIA operative -- ostensibly for refusing to falsify intelligence reports (an integral part of the plan to invade Iraq by any means necessary). Rove wanted revenge for this, and therefore sought to blow their cover and "out" them -- bascally as a way to silence them, and put them into a situation of extreme danger. you know -- he was trying to get them "disappeared". this makes him guilty of treason. considering these facts, he should, at the very least, be dismissed. at the very worst, well... you do know what the punishment for treason is, don't you? think real hard.

But when it suits ya, you are a college lecturer. You can't even remember your own bullshit. I'm starting to agree with Childe Roland, you are actually a parody. It's very well done.

I actually think he's in his late 20's, dead end job. Probably got passed over for promotion by a Gay guy so hates them. Feels so insecure about his religious beliefs he has become a zealot to mask it. His brother is in the army though. He's one of the cooks. Any want to add anything to this? It's a shame lando can't be carved up because he's "owned" by about 6 people on this board. Cue some ridiculous comeback from lando - "blah blah traitors...blah blah I have a tiny penis...blah blah...i make up crap on a fucking movie tb to make myself feel better...blah blah wheres the gun time to end it..." I'm a sophomore in college and never really knew what a "liberal" or a "conservative" is. If I had to base it on what people are posting, it seems a "conservative" has well thought out logical posts and a "liberal" calls someone names when he doesn't like what the person has said rather than respond to his posts. I don't know know if either said has their facts straight, but it seems the conservatives are playing fair and the liberals will do anything to win.

I try to keep an open mind and freely admit that at the age of 20 I don't have it all figured out. Apparently you feel I should. by winky man

OK, what sophomore isn't self obsessed? Apparently you go to or went to a different university than I do. I hate to break it to you, but for most of us saving the whales or converting people to religion or whatever is not top priority. It comes waaaaay below classes, partying, getting laid, working a job (for some of us) and so on. As to stupid? Well, I'm in college BECAUSE I want to continue my education. I happen to be a liberal arts major and not a lot of this shit comes up. OK maybe my major is indicative of my stupidity, but I was referring to the political uses of those words. I understand english. Now if you feel I should know the difference when I didn't even vote in the last election (yeah, I'll admit it), you may be right. But you'll be shocked to find out that with a lot of other people my age this is more true than not. So you just have an entire generation of idiots on your hands. I guess people were more informed back in the good old days.

I'm not using AICN as a source to get politically informed. I was just saying IF I did I would have reached certain conclusions. I find politics boring, and would much rather waste my free time at AICN than in a political chat room. Tony, I've never been to England, but it sounds like you are interested in politics much earlier than we are over here. Maybe you have a better system of education or something. I just know most people I know my age didn't vote here in the last election, and I think that's pretty normal in my country. All I was saying was, one side of this debate seems to like to throw around words like "retard" to describe the other and that makes me lose respect for any point he is trying to make. If I HAD to attend a political lecture by someone posting here, I'd go to the one who seems to have well thought out arguments, doesn't resort to personal attacks and has a sense of humor (especially a self-deprecating one). Does anyone really believe Lando is having a statue carved of him? I realize I don't know the history of people's past posts here, I just wanted to point out how it was coming across to someone reading this particular thread. It doesn't mean I buy into the arguments of one side over the other. Although as was already pointed out, just by doing that, I was told it's "obvious where I stand." Now I ask you, is that sort of tactic going to make me MORE or LESS receptive to said person's point of view?

    Reply to Talkback

Sorry to call you stupid or self obsessed, but over here that's what you'd have to be to not know much about politics at the age of 20, like I said different systems or values. Anyway my last thing to say is, please don't go down the path of thinking politics is all boring or that either side are retards. Politics affects everything you do, so in turn you must effect it. You can only do that by getting informed and getting out there.

I Confess To Not Caring About Politics As Much As I Should

    by winky man

I'm not saying that as a matter of pride, it's just that in this country you don't even have the right to drink a beer legally until you're 21, so for most of us college is a bit of freedom and we want to enjoy it for a few years before thinking about more serious things. If I think about it, I'm going to a University that receives funding from the state, so yeah, politics is playing a big part in my life. It's just hard to get worked up about it when things are going well. We don't have a draft, we don't have a depression, we're all reasonably happy. Most of us just want to enjoy it for a while. I know that's short-sighted, but that's the reality. You're right, I don't know the history of Lando's posts, but I don't know yours or anyone else's either. And I'm probably not going to form an opinion based on someone's posts, but I certainly am developing biases just from reading these things. The next time I hear a liberal speaking, I'm going to have in the back of my mind "Oh, those are the people who think I'm stupid." It's hard not to let something like that affect you, and I think I'm more open-minded than most. Not throwing that back in your face Tony, it sounds like by the standards of your counrty I AM ignorant. I just want to point out that that sort of thing probably has the effect of pushing most people into the other camp. And if the other camp calls me stupid too, is it any wonder I'd rather get back to drinking beer where everyone is getting along?

    Reply to Talkback

  • It puts people off royally. I'm not really a liberal myself (although I'm sure there are now people laughing there arses off at that). Look at it this way Winky, I was being biased about you to begin with but I'm happy to concede I was wrong and it was based on my culture anyway. I don't think you are stupid and apart from Cod here no one else has said that. Heck plenty of republicans will think that too but they might just shut up and smile politely instead of saying it to your face. You can only make up your own mind of course. But base it on the books you read not on what the people on this website think of you. It's about 4am here so I'm off. Nice talking to you though.

Also it's very late here so maybe my cognition is quite fully up to scratch but I don't see what Murder and commandments have to do with anything I said. You have quoted from the bible in many posts to prove points about Gays being wrong or immoral or whatever. Using the bible as proof that being gay is wrong is invincible ignorance. If you carpet bomb someone's country and give them 72 hours to get out they will hate you. I don't need evidence to back that up it's common sense. if you give a civillian population warning of bombings then the terrorists and insurgents will also get that warning.

Do you seriously think you're accomplishing anything here? Are you capable of reflecting even a tiny bit upon how self-discrediting your comments are? Just to take as example your last post, where you state that "the notion that murder is wrong comes from the ten commandments", makes this obviously clear. Do you really believe this, or am I misunderstanding your overall argument (I haven't read this entire thread)? And what about this: "If it was good enough for Truman to nuke someone twice, then it is certainly good enough for us to conventionally bomb an enemy". Oh really? Well, all I can say then is congratulations. That is exactly the sort of logic Osama's followers have adopted. You've just shown how easy it is for someone to adopt 'radical' ideas. There is nothing more radical than indiscriminately bombing other countries, killing in the process thousands of civilians (and in many other cases much more), to further one's own ideological agenda... By the way, glad to see that 'freedom of speech' is working out for you. Maybe you should read up on the 'linguistic turn' so that you can understand language and how to use it. Just some friendly advice...

    This looks Fucking GREAT.

    by kolobos rexx

This looks like it could be the suprise kick-ass comic adaptation that generally only smaller films like "The Crow", "Hellboy", & "Sin City" manage to pull off. hell, "Constantine" entertained me more than "Batman Begins"! The problem in a nutshell was that they took everything away from Bruce Wayne & Batman that made their characters work in the modern comics and the BTAS series. Bruce Wayne is not a pissy & whiney punk, either at the start of his career or ever! Gotham City looked pathetic. That damn train was shown so many times a blind man could have guessed it was inevitably central to the plot. That's what I call "foreshadowing... with a freaking sledgehammer"! Sure, the acting was fine. Katie Holmes? Absolutely pointless & unneeded. Michael Caine's acting was fine, but his Alfred was hardly the classy, cultured butler of the animated series & comics. Scarecrow was nice, for the 5 min. he was in there. And then there's the Ducard/Ra's Al Ghul crap. Not only was Ra's character & motivations COMPLETELY WRONG from the comics & show, but key elements of the character like his daughter, the Lazurus Pits, ect. are totally missing. And the shitty, saw it coming plot-twist was practically on billboards in the movie from the first scene. As for Spidey, I loved both films, but honestly, Sam better pull out all the stops & show us that he can do deep-character melodrama & badd-ass action again... The first film balances it out nicely. The second... gets damned annoying when Doc Ock vanishes for half the movie. And let's make sure that we start seeing the confidence, & the wisecracks, in Peter. Show us WHY he wears the damn suit, beyond just "oh oh, someone's threatening Mary Jane/the city/both"... We need to see the exhiliration, the veritable addiction he has to BEING Spider-Man, because it's a relief from being Parker. We know Parker inside & out now, let's get to know Spider-Man!! All that said, I'm excited about "V for Vendetta". It was an awesome graphic-novel, and no, dammit, we do NOT need to change our creative output because some genocidal, hate-everyone religous zealots want to blow shit up everyplace. This story & hopefully, the movie, shows us exactly what happens when we just sit on our asses until catastrophe strikes, then bitch about "dirting our hands" during & afterwards.

    Reply to Talkback

  • And become terrorists. That isn't an emotion or a feeling. You said being gay was immoral, you said it a lot more than once too, why do you think it is immoral? Just I can't prove it's not true but then you can't prove it is beliving something when there is no evidence for it and actual evidence to the contrary is invincible ignorance. And yes atheists can believe in thngs religious people do, so what? They believe in the same thing for different reasons. There really isn't much point in saying that. It doesn't mean religions are right or wrong. Catholics believe bread and wine turn in to flesh and blood when it's eaten. That's bullshit. Rushing to capture Baghdad. The military should have done a more thorough job and culled each and every city until it had killed as many Iraqui military as possible. Then when the got to Baghdad, not rush in and grab it. Sit outside in a seige and just kill every man jack who came out of the city, while at the same time going to other places north of B and killing as many Iraqui Military as possible. Never leave enough enemy to rise up and challenge you again. The Nuke effect in Iraq was not used. We lost a little over 300 of our Military to combat. We have lost more than triple to terrorists. We should have marched into Syria immediatly and culled them as well. Now they are a passageway for Terrorists. The war planning was fucked up due to Politically Correct motive's like preserving civilian lives. Should have killed as many iraqui as possible like we did in Japan with the two nukes. You can't win a guerilla war. You just get bogged down. You must use heavy weponery to take the fight out of the enemy. Afghanistan's mountains should have been nuked many times over to not only send a message to the world but to ensure Bin Laden and his boys would never see the light of day again.
Winky, Liberals are a cotradiction in term. They neither want liberty or freedom. They want subserviency. They will get it one way or the other. They will use the courts to deny your rights, they will use the courts to give rights to criminals. They will take away your free speech by calling your speech un pc or hate speech or sexists or whatever. They will allow terroristss to have rights that not even some black guy in LA has. You show me who is trying to do what in this country.
Tonywilson how about those Jackbooted Military style police who put five in that Brazillians head the other day? Don't be so high and mighty. It's a small scale mistake but civilians get killed in war sometimes and make no mistake, you guys are at war.

Valerie Plame was outed by her Husband and in fact she outed herself by getting herself involved in politics, when she is supposed to be information gathering in other countries.(In the months to come you'll find out that it was the State Department and that asshole Colin Powell and his minions who outed this Lady) She was willing to let a bold faced lie that her Husband said about who sent him to Africa, just slide. She is a paid Democratic operative who has been one of the people in the CIA who leaked sensitive material about our war plans before the Iraq invasion. Joe Wilson's claims of no Yellow Cake Uranium in Niger was a lie as proved by the commitee who looked into the intelligence foul up at the CIA. Bu the book or look for it in pdf form online somewhere. The commitee on WMD report.
Lando is right about Liberals not wanting to admit, hell not admit not allow, the truth to penetrate their shields. They care not about the truth they have an agenda which is not based on the truth but based on emotional responses to poll tested words. Just watch Chucky Schumar or Teddy Kennedy when they speak about anything. Take specific not on the silly but well tested words they use that they know will garner th proper responses. Like the new Supreme court Justice to be nominee. Just listen to the BS about Judge Roberst will roll back rights to the 1940's or roll back Roe V wade and women will be in alleys with coathangers. It's all lies meant to scare and galvanize at the same time. Scare you, galvinize the faithful.
Ted Kennedy is a Murderer. He killed a woman, Nothing he says is worth the spit on his tongue. Bt it makes sense that a Murderer would be for abortions because it's just kinda murder.
Tony Wilson the fence sitting Pussy. Still at it huh? Still trying to get others to believe your not a Liberal. Of course you are man. Your hatred for Karl Rove is just further proof of your lies about your ideology.
Winky make up your own mind and yes you can base what you believe are Liberals and Conservative on these talkbacks. Wanna know why? Charity and respect for your fellow man is the key".
The fact these guys immediately classified you an ignoramus just because of your age and standing in life is further proof that puts the lie to the word Liberal. Justice, I don;' think that all murder is a sin

    by tonywilson

My point was, if you believe in the bible you have to think any murder is a sin and breaks a commandment. I'm not a liberal in the sense that I don't immediately believe anything the left tell me or try to prove is correct. My hatred for Rove stems from his desire to destroy the church and state divide in the US. It is a fact that he outed that woman. Oh and one guy classified Winky as an ignoramus because of his standing. I classified him as being stupid or self obsessed because of what little he knew about politics. I did that because in the UK to get to 20 and to know barely anything about politics you would have to be thick, unwilling learn or self obsessed. Heck Justice you assumed a lot about me and nearly all of it was wrong. The police were right to shoot that guy. End of. It's still tragic that it happened but they did what needed to be done. Liberals are as guilty as cons for believing bullshit. I'm a cynic. There's a big difference.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Both sides get on wrong a hell of a lot more then they get it right. I assume you are aware of Rove's strategy when it comes to dealing with anyone they percieve
to be a threat. He's been sliming (his word) since he was in college. Ok so you think a more heavy handed approach to Iraq was needed, in some ways I'd agree, but to suggest we go in and kill and kill and kill till they give up is stupid. They will never give up. Just like you would never give up if Al Qaeda flew planes in to building everyday. All you do is increase hatred for yourselves which leads to more people becoming extremists. That's comment sense. The administration can see this. Practically everyone else can as well. It's only a few bloodthirsty souls who think any different. You want to see an unfuuny prick, anchorite? Look in the mirror, if you can. Meanwhile, the clip looks cool, and saying its a ripoff of this or that matters not. There are no originals ideas, just variations on themes. Some themes get shuffled & reshuffled together, to try to make things fresh, but its still the same game; young men trying to beat dead men at things that have already been. What did you expect?

Before you said "The police were right to shoot that guy. End of. It's still tragic that it happened but they did what needed to be done.", you said "Oh and blowing up an innocent civillian even if it's to get to an insurgent IS MURDER." - I am not saying what the police did in the UK was murder by the way nor that your two statements are diametrically opposed but on the face of it, they seem somewhat incongruent as in both situations, an innocent person gets killed and we must try and avoid that. Can you please clarify yourself?

Listen - that guy in London has no one to blame but himself for ending up in the morgue. No one. Might the bobbies have been a bit twitchy on the trigger? Perfectally understandable, given their brief affair with side arms to start with, and, especially & most importantly, given the dead guys actions. He brought the rain down on himself. The only thing he apparently didn't do was shout out "allah akbar!" or "Osama rules!" His family asking for damages is sick & laughable. The bobbies should be asking his family to pay damages for making them have to shoot his idiotic ass. While he may have been an "innocent civilian", his actions that day were not. I hope this incident will not deter armed bobbies from opening up on the next poltroon who behaves in this manner, as he may be the one carrying the bomb next time. The lunatic murderers may, in fact, be counting on police reluctance next time. It surely is a f&*ked up situation, but a situation of the dead guys making.

    Looks all wrong by Phloton

    by machinaman

Agree 100%. The first thing that I thought of when I saw the trailer was how sharp, how clearly defined the images looked and how the images from the graphic novel were grainy, almost dream-like.

As it stands, it appears almost hyper-real.

Not a good thing, but luckily a minor one.

BTW, saw Fantastic Four last weekend, and it was not nearly as bad as it's being made out to be. The story also cleverly worked in hints about Latveria, so those that said that they didn't make Doom the head of Latveria may actually have been inaccurate because it doesn't reveal his connection to that nation.

    Clarification

    by tonywilson

Hey Shan, yeh I can clarify for you. Ok So the police shot that man because they thought he was going to blow himself up. They turned out to be wrong but were acting in the best interests of everyone around and thought they were killing a suicide bomber. In Iraq or anywhere when you bomb you automatically concede to killing innocent civillians not through mistaken identity or because of their actions. My point about the "IS MURDER" thing was that if you are a christian who believes in the 10 commandments you can't go around bombing cities or towns because you will murder people. Personally not being a Christian I can understand and to some extent rationalize that awful phrase "collateral damage". But what confounds me is christinans who thinks it's ok to do it.

Ask anchorite...I recall that conversation too. He was very firm about it. Apparently all that stuff about Walter being in London during the blitz was a fantasy. Of course, she'll likely deny it now, since that particular post subject is no longer available. Anchorite has, it seems, major issues owning up to the bone headed things that it posts here, but as with the post regarding his fucktard offer of blowing up an english citizen, there's no end to the sewage this creature spouts. I also recall that post in the section where they had pix of Bela Lugosi playing Jesus in London, around 1908 or something like that. Several people, including myself if memory serves, had a go at him & he vanished from the TB, never to return. Expect more posting from her, laced with naughty words & bluff talk, since that's all it has, believe me.

There will be an investigation, there always is when the police shoot someone in the UK, if there was any wrong doing it will be brought to light, we have a pretty good system over here. For me the guy could have been white or chinese or any ethnicity. In the wake of what happened a day before when I guy sees armed police and runs on to a station what does anyone expect to happen? It's sad that the terrorist have pushed us this far but it's also something we have to accept. Terrorism is so very dangerous because it always works. Always. Wether people are killed or not. It's such and insidous method of war. It has so moany different effects that all impinge upon the victims.

i don't think this excuses what happened, but i think understand why it happened. these cops were scared! they saw something rather odd -- a man dressed in a bulky coat going into the subway on a very hot day -- and they went over the line. maybe theres a racist element to that, maybe not. i think if i were a cop in the same situation, i might get scared like that too. although i can't imagine myself shooting a man in the head 5 times, i could see myself jumping him and beating him down.

Very true my friend. Very true. That's way I think terrorism always works, it instantly spreads fear and suspicions and stops people from leading normal lives. That guy got killed for a number of reasons many of which were his own fault, but, the terrorist attacks are responsible for his death as well. I agree those bobbied must feel awful now. I'll also admit when it first happened and people thouht he was a bomber I was, not pleased, but satsfied with what they did. That sense of security evaporated as soon as he was identifed as civillian. The sad fact is also, this incident is only likely to increase the terrorists resolve. Fighting terrorism is a near impossible task. Fighting it with brute force is a totally impossible task.

    Why?

    by maguasynfield

Why are people constantly ignoring the fact that this dead guy is the one who screwed the pooch? When they said "halt", & he looked around to see armed men pointing guns at him, all he had to do was halt. He didn't. He then run into a train station & jumped the turnstiles, all the time ignoring orders from the armed men behind him to STOP. He refused, & they were absolutely justified at that point in blowing the silly son of a bitch to Mars. The charge of possible racism is absurd - he was shot because he came out of a house under surveilance, dressed in manner the bobs were told to look for, & ran like hell from armed men into a train station. Period. I am sorry to see this day come to my amigos in the UK, but lathering blame upon the cops is nuts. This guy held his fate in his owns hands & pissed it away stupidly. I hope the next dumbass who pulls a stunt like that gets the same. The Israelis taught the British cops under their tuteldge to go for the head shot with these clowns, as that is the only reasonably guarenteed way of stopping them from doing whatever it is they have in mind. A wounded man can still light off a detonater. You do not, can not give people like this ( terrorists) second chances.

No, wasn't about you - but in actual fact, I am empathetic towards the police in a situation like that. Unfortunately, it is the worst case scenario, because the first person shot was an innocent (anyone consider that the cat may have been visiting his pot dealer? Hence, the running, misunderstanding and then 5 to the dome). Now you have a general incompetence outcry, a completely petrified minority community (that's not just racial profiling - that's 'shoot the non-whites' profiling), and a general community who realizes that the authorities, in most cases, are tactically profficient while having no idea who they're fighting. There is no way out of this, no way to fight this enemy, and we'll likely be living with terrorism for the rest of our lives, or until some actual war breaks out that dwarfs this unfocused 'war on 'ism'. I just truly hope that the Muslim organizations get off the 'tread softly and keep a low profile' strategy and actually formally do something about the perversion in their otherwise totally fine little Islam (well, except for the treatment of women, my god - why do all religions hate women?). At some point, the issue has to be how to stop making blowing yourself up seem like a viable career path.

    Here's the problem ...

    by shan

... before any information had come out other than a man had been shot running from police, both of my parents (who are from Sri Lanka) pegged this shooting as a mistake. As it is, they say Sri Lanka is one of the countries where they credit as having learned this technique from. Unfortunately, they fail to mention that quite often, suicide bombers get through in Sri Lanka. They may not have invented the technique there but they have certainly refined it way too well. Quite often you don't get a good chance to shoot them - conversely, you have the results as to what happened, you shoot the wrong person. The Independent newspaper published an article about the guy who was killed, here's a small bit of it "His fate was apparently decided by a cruel combination of improbability: that, used to the heat of Brazil, he should find a cool Englishsummer's day too cold for comfort and wore a bulky jacket; his skin colour might have made him appear Asian to his pursuers; and he shared a communal entrance to a block of flats with a suspected member of the terrorist cell that carried out last Thursday's failed attack on London's transport system." When the jacket was mentioned and as to why he was wearing it, I first off thought that maybe he was wearing it because even on the best of days, well England is cold for those of us from closer to the equator. Not necessarily sinister in itself - and I was right. As for where he lived, he wasn't sharing a house, there were a lot of apartments in a block with a common entrance, I'm presuming ...

Other countries media is objective. You seriously are warped. Yeh I laughed my head off at your posts because you have no idea how ridiculous you sound. The US media is rightwing. Fox is practically a propaganda machine.

It is the most popular paper in the country, but I think Mr Murdoch could be a Bond Villian... The Sun has achieved such saturation and influence in this country that it willfully and shamlessly hypnotises its readers to ways of thinking - and can demonize a person or group of people at the editors behest. Does Murdoch live in a Sydney mansion or a secret base in a volcano? If the answer is the latter... please call Q ASAFP.

Are The Boobies More Violent In The Sun Now?

    by diana rules!

Do they show boobies with machine guns? Or do they show the same docile enticing boobies they always have? You change the boobies and the terrorists have won! Anchorite, you still haven't clarified your gender, possibly due to fear as being labelled "on the rag." I don't think anyone posting would take a cheap shot like that, especially not Magua who's too busy elevating the game play of swine despite the thanklessness of it all. Anchorite, you shrewdly zeroed in on the stuff of substance in my lengthy post, mainly anything having to do with you and wisely ignored the rest of the drivel. Way to stay focused and also I admire your attention to grammar and the importance of being able to spell. We here in the US realize that you can't be taken seriously without a proper command of the english language, and have therefore elected a president that puts us in the best light on this most important issue of credibility. Trevor, just because you are well hung is no need to rub it in the faces of those less fortunate. Tony, once again you have seen what we here could not, that FOX news does seem, upon further thought, to favor the Republicans. I will return the favor by offering my overseas insight and suggest that The Guardian seems to favor the left. Sometimes the fish can't see the water, I know. Lando, by not posting every 10 minutes you are lending credibility to the thought that you may indeed have a job, but it's apparent that you are not as high on the totem pole as you would have people believe if you can't shake free to enlighten those who desperately need your guidance. Oh, and by totem pole I meant a hierarchal metaphor, not suggesting you were engaged in immoral sexual acts.

It seems that the two of you have more in common than you think, maybe the foundation has been laid for you two to have a beer. I apologize for misreading that you were hitting on Lando, even though you haven't "proven" me wrong. I'm willing to take your word and admit I may have been mistaken, despite the fact you didn't mention the boobies everyone else seems to have no problem talking about and are worried about being investigated and seem to have your paperwork neatly in order like most straight men I know. Rest assured, your assertions of masculinity are enough for me! Wedgie, you have shown the dangers to us all of watching what we put into print since your ability to cut and paste seems unparalled. Brit, by not participating in the fray you have done nothing but draw suspicion to yourself? What are your real motives? What is your agenda? By failing to take a stand you must be wanting someone here to define your politics since you are unwilling to do so yourself. I have forwarded your posts to Bobo, who has a way of discerning intent with minimal information. A love of boobies for boobies sake may seem innocent, but it is bound to make you a target.

He was one of us once - then became an American because of business expediency. He made Fox News the way it is because he saw a niche that wasn't being filled - as for whether he believes in it - or anything - I'm not entirely sure. If the situation had been reversed with the media, he may well have started a left leaning news service like, I don't know a ?more lefty CNN? We get the impression he'll do anything to increase his influence and power regardless of whether he believes in it or not. Case in point, he dropped BBC World Service from his satellite TV in China because they demanded it as a condition of being able to continue broadcasting there after earlier he'd been banging on (or at least saying something) about something that could be construed as being in favour of democracy or free speech ...

    by kuryakin

There's a story about Murdoch when the Sun were contemplating setting up a separate Scottish Sun. They were concerned because at that time, there was a lot of pro-Unionist shit going down with Murdoch's friends in the Tory government and thought that he wouldn't support a separate paper as it would imply there was a separate country to cater for. They did all this research about how Scottish people wanted their own paper and hired a pipe band and all kinds of Scottish shit to parade up and down while they tried to persuade Murdoch that he wouldn't be de-stabilising the country, just giving people what they want. Just as they're getting into it, Murdoch raises his hand to interrupt and says " Will it sell more papers?" They pause and finally say "...Yes" and Murdoch says "FIne by me". The man does not give a fuck about politics except how it pertains to him making more money. He'd jump on the any bandwagon if he thought there was money in it.

I mean, c'mon, can't you see how subjective, and tautological, your argumentation is? The 'reasons' you seem to be basing yourself upon, though your prerogative, are far from 'acceptable' to most people, so you can't use 'them' as justification, no matter how much you may want to. The 'radical terrorists', after all, see themselves as using justified force against greater powers and the violent means at their disposal. That's the catch-22 of U.S. and 'Western' military supremacy, though this is the case for any state with domestic disputes (and partly the logic behind MAD: mutual assured destruction...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction). Say what you will, murder is murder. Too bad nobody ever inserted "thy shall use your own brain to think for thyself" in the 'Ten' Commandments... could have spared us much grief...

    by winky man

It seems this talkback has been busy. Bobo, what the fuck? There was a lot to read here, and after your post jumped out at me, I reread everything looking to see if I was taking it out of context. I thought you had to be just pulling my chain, but as far as I can tell, it looks like you're serious. I'm NOT a republican or democrat or anything. I freely admit I'm not politically knowledgeable enough to join a political party. You seem to find that odd for a college student. Tony said the same thing and explained why, cultural differences and all. If you're not from the US, I suggest you read those posts before slamming me. If you are from the US, what fucking college are you familiar with where there are all these political knowledgeable people running around? It sure as Hell isn't mine. It isn't any of the ones my friends go to. You can call me retarded all you want, but I don't feel in the least stupid or an exceptionally politically naive standout in my peer group. I made a point that at the time I was posting, one side was using tactics which made me lose respect for any serious point they were trying to make. Yes, I think Lando puts together a good argument for whatever case he's making, he backs it up with facts, he answers the criticisms directly that people level at his point of view and doesn't resort to name calling as a first line of attack. Mock liberal arts all you want, but it does give me an ability to recognize irony. Did you even bother to check Lando's links? I did. It gives you a much clearer picture of where he's coming from, you might want to consider that before calling someone braindead or a shadow republican or whatever the shit you were accusing me of. To top it iff, just as Tony and some of the others are politely putting their remarks in context and increasing my respect for their debating skills and point of view, Justice and Anchorite jump in using the SAME tactics I'd originally addressed as lowering the credibility of the person who used them. So just as I found people to respect on both sides, and just as the jackass factor had evened out (i'm not calling anyone a jackass, just referring to a certain style of "debating" both sides have now used about equally), you come in from left field and call me a retard. I try to keep an open mind, like I said, and don't know what side I'm on, but it's definitely not yours. And that doesn't mean I'm a republican based on the logic, "Well, asshole despises republicans. Asshole thinks I've got my head up my ass. I don't wan't to hang out with people like asshole, therefore the republicans must be my people." I haven't had an epiphany or whatever. If you are calling yourself a democratic or a liberal though, you're certainly not doing your group any favors. Of course I suspect that this post means nothing to you, since you already seem convinced that if I'm not on your side, whatever the fuck it is, that's further proof of my idiocy. Or if you mean that a republican is anyone who doesn't hold your position, shit I suspect 99 percent of the world is republican then, from you're point of view. It sounds like you have very little tolerance for someone who is still making up their mind.

So if you're an asshole jew, it doesn't mean I'm going to become a nazi. Just so you understand I DO NOT THINK JEWS GO AROUND RAPING PEOPLE, KILLING DOGS AND BURNING DOWN HOUSES. No, I'm not surrounded by political science majors in my social circles. I tend to be around people for whom talking politics is a guaranteed buzz kill. My point was that do you think anyone is inclined to listen to you, whatever your views, if you address them as moron? Do you get what I'M saying? I've written all this to give you the benefit of the doubt in case you glossed over a word or two that gave you a bizarre understanding of what I was actually saying. Cameron, I hadn't realized that Jesus was the source of Lando's invective until you pointed it out. I'd forgotten that Jesus spent 90 percent of his life turning in people to the Romans, ranting against the homos and founding the Republican Party until you reminded me. Thank God you've taken the time to study history so the rest of us can get on with watching the boobies. Cisco Bunny, your name is indeed superior to Lando's. Whereas his is a weak play on words, you have taken the names of The Cisco Kid and Bugs Bunny and recombined them to form something new. It's like you made The Matrix succinctly using only two words. Your name is indeed a testament to your great wit. I seek the boobies for solace every time I read your name and the inferiority of my own, as well as others overpowers me with angst. That amazing insight into the growth of government proves just how fixed the nobel prizes are, since again, you didn't get the one for economics. Winky, your constant Republican diatribe is starting to wear thin. I didn't need Bobo to point out that you were a mormon, it's obvious in everything you say. You mormons are all liberal arts types who cloak your desire for an endless supply of boobies in religion and mystery. Quit continuing to hawk your right wing views here, have you not learned we are not receptive to them? Bobo, I'm with you man. Reading someone's actual posts is not necessary to get a feel for who they are or their level of intelligence. I'm forwarding some posts to you, in some cases just names, because I'm doing some free lance profiling and need a heavy hitter like yourself who sizes people up quickly. Oh and they're retarded to, so they won't remember it and you'll be doing them a favor to boot. Lando, shocking that the powers that be ban you all the time when all your posts relate exclusively to movies. The Man must just be jealous or your physical prowess and sparkling wit, or did you steal Harry's dream girl and this is unending retaliation? It's the only possible explanation for the abuse you've been clearly singled out for. OK, let's play ball.

Your posts have reached such a level of banality, that I hope I speak for others, leftists, conservatives, libertarians, moderates, progressives, independents, free-thinkers, whatever, when I say: FUCK OFF!... Don't get me wrong, I don't think you should get banned... just that your posts have just no merit whatsoever, not anymore, not even as a distraction, so you should really consider backing off to lick your wounds.. if not recapacitate on what you've been saying. For the love of Christ man, Think! To quote Einstein: "for those who would joyously march in rank and file, they have already earned my contempt, for they were given a large brain by accident when a spinal chord would have sufficed." Think Lando, then type. Or... read a book, THEN think, then type. Mind you.. think for yourself... ok?-------p.s. You didn't respond to my last post, nor to my mention of your 'ten commandments' quote in the previous one. But don't worry, I realize you're busy... it seems you're quite popular... congratulations...

    by cisco bunny

If you claim to support the war so much, why haven't you enlisted? You keep talking about how much more patriotic you are... In case you haven't noticed, we are in a recruitment crisis. For the past 8 months, the military has missed it'e recruitment goal by 65%. If Young Republicans like you don't put your money where your mouth is, retreat and surrender will soon be our only option in Iraq. It is truly a testament to how deeply Buish has damaged and demoralized the military that not even those who support the war are willing to enlist. Republicans are cowards and traitors to America.

I've seen plenty of your posts and it's obvious to anyone that your logic reaches as far as your own personal experience, which despite your no doubt silly protestations is severely limited. Let's take you apart a point at a time. Why did you mention racial hatred? At no point have a said or intimated such a thing. You silly little man. Bodybuilder are you? Hope that terrible acne clears up for you soon. I wouldn't say it to your face? Why not? Are you trying to say I'd be scared or too chickenshit to insult a bodybuilder? Hohoho. Bodybuilders are notoriously poor at being intimidating, laughable yes. intimidating no. But then you probably aren't really a bodybuilder just like you don't have a the perfect physique and whatever other egotistical crap you spew whether in jest or in all seriousness. I said your views are based on ignorance and a solipsistic superiority complex, your views on poker or floor tiles or anything else are influenced by your ridiculous ego. I'm not zombiesolutions, I used one word that he uses because it happens to piss you off and is quite an amusing way of talking about Christians with your views. Of which there are far too many these days. Your views on gays and the terrorism issue are an absolutely perfect example of your stupidity, at no point have you been able to defend in them in any reasonable way. Just more bullshit about what generals think. And more crap about the bible and what is "natural". I agree with you on one thing. That you talk bullshit and it baffles people. Well done asskiss, you are a very accomplished bullshitter. Ah and your last little dig at me about the library. What point could you possibly be trying to make I wonder? Reply to Talkback

  • Ever stop to think WHY you've been getting banned? Learn how to debate without resorting to insults and (very) broad, and extreme, generalizations... or threats (that whole FBI thing was pathetic, and I'd beat the shit out of you if you ever tried anything similar with me... I'll even meet you after gym... I work out too y'know [silly smily symbol]). How about toning down your "I can say whatever I want" attitude... oh, yeah, you already are... how conciliatory (everybody can see through you, loser).******* On another, yet related (also with V, this movie deals with the ideological basis behind state-sponsored and individually motivated uses of violence, and how they are justified, at least that's what I got out of the trailer), I've just watched Blair attempt to put a brave face to the curtailment in domestic civil liberties as a means to combat 'terrorism' and its 'ideological basis'. To paraphrase him : "we've got to combat the sort of ideology that justifies the death of innocent civilians". Oh deary me, really Tony? Then I'd suggest you take more care of the trail of "collateral victims" you leave behind whenever you back heavy-handed military incursions in other peoples territory, because many in these regions - the families of the victims for example - feel you have a sligthly cavalier attitude to the specific interests of civilians and civilian infrastructure, what with the way they seem to be used as cannon fodder by both sides... but more plainly by the way that no effort has been placed by any of the coalition members to keep a record of the amount of civilian deaths that have accrued since the invasion began! (which, according to an independent report, goes nearly up to 25,000, though they said this number is very conservative, and should nevertheless be verified, which is partly the reasoning behind the report: to force the goverments responsible to publish the full list of casualties, not only of 'their own people', http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4692589.stm) No, Iraq is not, and should not, be the final justification for 'these terrorists', but it is an argument that they use to 'radicalize' angry youths around the world that sympathize with 'their cause'. But, unless you attempt to understand the 'ideological basis' of their cause, instead of simply dismissing it just because it is 'non-negotiable' (as opposed to the IRA use of terrorism, which backed by a republican-inspired ideology, apparently was negotionable), you'll just be running around in circles while the fundamental problems continue to build up (which is usually the short-term strategy preferred by most governments). Aaaah, watching Blair walk through this minefield was... I actually felt sorry for him... he seemed to be losing even more of his grip on reality, and you could also see more clearly through the facade of his usually stoic composure. I actually felt sorry for him... if he makes it to the end of his term in office, he'll either be completely gray or practically bald. Either way, he'll be lucky. State-sponsered violence resulting in civilian deaths, when perpetrated by 'Western democracies' in the name of 'freedom, democracy, and human rights (and free trade)', has more of a leeway when it comes to how they apply force, and the consequences these unleash. The priviledge attached to any leadership function that is backed by this ideological apparatus is that you can act like a terrorist when in office, even if it means having to put up with criticism, ridicule, or even desdain, but in the end, once you've weathered all the trials and tribulations inherent in your CAREER choice, you have the ability to enjoy your 'golden' years living like a king with the royalties of guest-speeches and candid 'auto'-biographies (if you haven't secured 'other' means while in office). Just look at Clinton.

I'm convinced you've lost your grip on 'reality'. However, I do take back the 'loser' and the ad hominem attacks... no need to stoop to your level. That doesn't take away that you're a coward, and delusional, for not only calling the FBI, but thinking that is going to help you on your war on terrorism... That may have been the case, if the FBI had been allowed to follow up on their investigations concerning the 9-11 hijackers BEFORE 9-11, but they had been strangely obstructed from above. THINK Lando! Do some RESEARCH. There's more going on than what you see, hear, or read in the news. 'Consider the following cases, all drawn from mainstream news sources, summarized in David Ray Griffin's well-researched expose, "The New Pearl Harbor":

    1) Ken Williams of the Phoenix FBI office sent a now-famous July 10, 2001 memo to the counterterrorism division of the FBI suggesting that the organization institute a national program to keep tabs on suspicious flight-school students. This came just a few weeks after the CIA learned that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11 plot and a well-known terrorist at that time who the CIA was monitoring, was recruiting jihadists to come to the US to take part in attacks here. Williams, who had previously been transferred to an unrelated arson case despite tracking the hijackers for more than a year, had been back on the case for about a month when he wrote the memo, which also warned of a possible

    V For Village Idiots

    by red lantern

I can see why you'd be confused, there hasn't been a lot of help from some of these posts. V was a graphic novel written by american Alan Moore that was sort of like 1984. V is a terrorist and wears a Guy Fawkes mask. He's waging what amounts to basically a one man war against the government. It's a pretty simple plot, 1984 with more action. What males it work is the quality of the writing, the plot's been used a few times before (I just realized how weak it sounded when typing this). You got them all right. Natalie Portman plays a character befriended by V and their relationship is a large part of the story.

Alan Moore is 51 years old. He was born in Northampton, England, an industrial town. He has lived in Northampton for much of his life. He currently lives in Northampton, quite close to his childhood home. He has never lived in the U.S.A.

I believe those referring to Moore as a "U.S. writer" are confusing him with Neil Gaiman, who was born in England but has lived for some years in Minnesota, a place not unlike the North of England, but much colder.

    by kuryakin

In case anyone is still interested. His mother was a Spaniard whose family were mostly killed in the civil war. He is on record as saying he hated her for her club foot and alchohol problem but loved her for her Soclialist ideals and darts playing ability. His father was a coal miner by day and Russian dancer by night. This is what is believed to have given the young Alan both his love of alter-ego'd superheroes and of carbon and carbon-based goods. He has fourteen rings on his fingers, all of them in the shape of Lovecraft daemons, except for one Hello Kitty diamond ring, a present from Jude Law. His newest hobby is croquet. He no longer writes comics, preferring to bitch about them to journalists who haven't read anything he has written since 1991. He is curently 'plotting' several comics to keep his daughter employed and off state benefit. Alan Moore is a member of the Keep Kermit Green Society and a bif fan of Nip/Tuck. He saYS "Dr. Troy is both dishy AND dastardly. He turns me on with his good looks and easy charm and then off with his lack of commitment and weird attraction to his business partner. I like his vulnerablility around his black baby"

I guess people will always see what they want to see. Sad but true. You and me together Anchorite... maybe we can make a difference! What do you say? Next up is Hobbesianism (you know, the 'state of nature' argument, although Latour has recently made a good case why the Leviathan has yet to manifest itself...), Machiavelianism, and Platonism (The Republic, duh!). We should be ending with a good jolt of Straussianism, in order to prepare us for the inevitable backlash. That way we can present ourselves one way, while staying true to our convictions, seeing that our 'honesty' was nevertheless in display... it's just the ignorant and unbelievers who lack the 'vision'. Anyways, this is all just for the first session. We'll see where we go from there, after going over the minutes from the first meeting.** Oh man, I'm so looking forward to next decade... aren't you? Kuryakin, I Certainly Appreciate Your Posts

    by red lantern

I don't know where you learned all that suff about Alan Moore, but it's cool that you're so knowledgeable. THAT'S the kind of stuff you expect people to talk about. The actual film or the material it's based on. We're having an intelligent conversation on the Superman thread that is actually based on the movie and the comic books. If you post there, your insights will probably be appreciated. You seem pretty smart.

    The Filth

    by octaveaeon

I'm telling you, the time is ripe for these kind of stories... our 'reality' as it is is already bursting at its seams... If get out of 'post-modernism' without a clear social/cultural reference point or other, we will be inundated in a plurality (cacophony) of identity struggles... Everybody has something to say, everybody wants rights, everybody wants this, or that.. but also everyone is scared, unsure about where the future is taking us, whom should 'lead' (too bad so many are still on 'sheep' mode, even if they claim the contrary), or what ideology we should adopt. And as long we continue the same old power struggles, well, we might as well forget about tackling the really serious issues when they hit us in the face, namely peak oil and environmental disasters. What, people already forgot about the Secret report by the Pentagon warning about possible scenarios related to environmental disasters (which could explain Bush's and other conservative's aloofness... they're probably thinkin, 'what's the use, its going to happen anyways, so let's make sure we're in a position to take advantage once this truly Hobbesian scenario falls upon us') [http://www.isn.ethz.ch/news/sw/details_print.cfm?id=8384]. You know, sometimes I wonder why I bother... (oh, yeah, my unborn children... and their children... silly, silly me)

    Filth

    by kuryakin

I have to confess that despite being both a relatively intelligent chap, philosophy graduate and all that; as well as a comic fan, I didn't really understand The Filth. I don't think it was that I was that stupid or inattentive, I think it was just obtuseley written. In the end I didn't care that much to follow the story becaue it wasn't that good. I liked the cat - I like cats. I liked that he was pissed off and homicidal when his cat died. I too would fuck up anyone who killed ny cat. But my cat is special and nice

As I recall they are the parents to twins or something, what reason would she have to send him on a serious trip? Good contacts could mean he knows some people who could help out. ____ And as for that Amici Curiae brief, that blogger quaintly left out that the brief is to argue that Matt Cooper and Judith Miller haven't committed any crimes, not Rove. But let's keep things civil if you want to keep going with this, I don't want to resort to name calling.

    kuryakin, i'd have to agree...

    by octaveaeon

in that it wasn't perfect. I myself have to admit that I don't know much about comics... I never read them simply because I didn't have access to them, but I did love them when I read them (usually the DC, Marvel stuff). I bought The Filth one day when I came across it (on my way to the philosophy section, no less...), and it immediately grabbed my attention. And although it had some very interesting parts, as a whole it didn't match my own vision of what is possible with this theme. For that you need to use different mediums simultaneaously, otherwise you run the risk of playing for gimmicry, or under/over-exposing the themes and ideas. This is also what happened to 'The Matrix' trilogy.**** I'm glad to hear you liked the cat... I kind of liked the monkey. The flying sperm cells left me a bit non-plussed though...

As good as the trailer looks I'm pissed off that Natalie Portman couldn't get a decent English accent. She sounds like Bridget Jones not the common as muck cockney Evey is meant to be. Portman plays it far too posh.

FACT- The name was leaked and Rove has said he didn't mention her by name. Not that he didn't mention her.

Our eyes are wide open (they better be, otherwise we went through two virgins for no reason), and our army is everywhere but invisible. Fate is on our side. The Temple will rise! But you are being satrirical right?
The invisible army is everywhere? Yeh that's it I'm giving up now there is an invisible army around.
And you have facts to back what up with? I said Rove, through his attorney, confirmed he didn't mention her by name. Not that he didn't mention her. That is a fact. And I said he had a history of sliming people like this. Also a fact. I also said he was unethical and manipulative pondscum. Ok he isn't actually pondscum, it's a metaphor. The rest is truth.

"The family of the Brazilian man shot dead by marksmen who mistook him for a suicide bomber revealed last night how police have changed their account of the incident. As the body of Jean Charles de Menezes was flown home to Brazil for his funeral later today, his cousin said that senior officers at Scotland Yard have retracted claims that the 27-year-old electrician was acting suspiciously, so officers had no option but to open fire. Vivien Figueiredo, 22, said police told her that he was wearing a lightweight denim jacket and not some bulky coat that could have hidden an explosive belt underneath. Detectives also claimed immediately after the shooting that Mr Menezes had refused to heed shouted warnings by armed police and vaulted the ticket barriers at Stockwell Tube station. Now police say that he used his travelcard to gain access to the station. Ms Figueiredo said:

Everything "we" do is a tragic mistake. It's also tragic that "we" not only let this happen, but also perpetuate the undelying reasons behind "our" predicament. What is it we are perpetuating??

    by octaveaeon

a lot of stupid shit. Beginning with an arrogant view on the supremacy of our 'ideals', as if they were the sole product of our imagination. You know, 'freedom' and 'democracy' are not as alien to the middle east as we'd like to think, despite the fact that governments we have supported in this region have been (and still are, like Saudi Arabia and Egypt... or Pakistan) antithetical to such ideals. But also our dependence on the economic structure of our societies, which not only tend to rely (to remain competitive) on cheap resources and cheap labour, but also on ever growing markets in which to sell our products (nevermind the ecological consequences!). And also our political systems, that despite the fact that we already realize that they are incapable of meeting sufficiently and adequately our most pressing needs, nevermind any future ones, we nevertheless rely on the continuation of the status quo (going from 'left' to 'right' every few years is not 'democracy' as far as i'm concerned... what about all the other alternatives?)!. To continue...next comes.. geo-strategic problems... For sure, the diplomatic shenanigans have reached their limit of effectivity... even Kim Jong-il is well-versed in the arts of realpolitik, as bizarre as that may sound, so 'pretending' anything in front of cameras has proven the facticity of the law of diminishing returns. What's maddening is that, despite movies like Bulworth or Network, we let things continue their merry way. Very weak (and sheepish). Anyways, these are a few of the 'things' we are perpetuating. I've got more, and it can get more complicated... to give you an example, let me quote from a piece I wrote a few months ago, if that's ok...: "The normalization of war (and fear) and the perpetuation of current systems of control impinge on our ability to collectively address critical dilemmas due to the oppressive ontological nature of actual intra-subjective relations and the organizational context in which these exist [I know.. I never got around to improving this piece... so bear with me]. In fact, the more we think of alternatives, the more we entrench ourselves in pre-existing social and cultural paradigms that by consensual identification elicit a tacit approval of the reified construct, be it the nation-state, free-market capitalism, or even the nuclear family. In other words, our very participation in socio-cultural, political, economical, and even personal networks, perpetuate the ideological basis underlying each of these commitments. The reason why I call them constructs is that they are in effect created by us, through a long period of time and within changing contexts and circumstances, bringing to the fore all kind of factors that in the end it is the historians job (as accepted by most) to re-construct. They are phenomenological creations that, ongoing naturalist/realist/positivist etc. debates notwithstanding, help us make sense and, in effect, engage with the ontological nature of
