Quint at Comic-Con: GHOST RIDER panel with tidbits and clips!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a report from the GHOST RIDER portion of Sony's panel at this year's SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2005. The panel featured Avi Arad, director Mike Steven Johnson and Eva Mendes and yes, the did show some footage. Avi also went into what properties will be out from Marvel's team-up with Paramount.
TIDBITS:
-When asked about which story they're telling, Johnson said they didn't want it to be too convoluted like it became later in the series, so they're focusing on the original story, the origin era of the comics.
-Sony Imageworks is doing the CG work.
-They're about a month and a half away from having the first full CG sequence with the Ghost Rider.
-During filming there was always either Nick Cage or his stunt double for the Skull head to be placed on via CG, instead of a completely CG character whenever Ghost Rider is onscreen. While filming this, Cage would wear either an interactive light color around his neck or a green bubble around his head... I had visions of a ridiculous version of Mysterio when I heard Johnson talk about this. I hope we see that footage on the DVD!
-Weapons Ghost Rider will use: Fire chain, Hellfire Shotgun, pennant stare and, of course, the Hellcycle.
-The CG fire around the skull will be an extension of Ghost Rider's personality. When he's pissed, it'll flame higher and become white hot, when he's sad it'll be more short and blue, etc. I liked this thought, myself.
-Bringing up DAREDEVIL, someone asked if he's going to be put into a similar situation where he has a good movie, but then has to cut a half hour out and release his cut on DVD. Johnson said that Sony is very supportive of GHOST RIDER and it doesn't hurt to have Nick Cage have your back, but that he fully expects they will release his full cut.
-Nick Cage has a Ghost Rider tattoo on his arm in real life. He loves the character... matter of fact, a lot of Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze's wardrobe comes straight out of Nick Cage's closet.
-Avi was asked about the films Marvel and Paramount are putting into production... here's a partial list: Captain America, Nick Fury, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther and possibly Dazzler (although I'm not sure if this was a joke or not... the way he said it, it could have been for laughs or not).
-Avi was then asked about any cross-over possibilities. He responded saying he needs to put enough characters out with their own movies before he starts doing cross-overs.
-He was then asked if he'd reveal who the villains in SPIDER-MAN 3 are going to be. He said, "Yes." The audience cheered. When the cheers quieted down, Avi said, "Thomas Hayden Church... Topher Grace..." and the audience went, "Awwwww..." That was it. The bastard didn't reveal! What better time, I ask you? I guess somebody somewhere has an exclusive agreement to release the villains... damn.
CLIP:
The clip started off with Johnny Blaze jumping a line of buses on a football field, end post to end post. He's interviewed by Eva Mendes... not much was said... I actually remember very little of the dialogue, except the big funny closing-of-a-trailer line... as Nick Cage is holding his head and he's asked (by Sam Elliott, I believe) if he's alright. He says, "It feels like my skull's on fire..."
We did get a bit of Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles and he was really cool. Wes Bentley looked pale and weird as Blackheart... not a bad weird, more of a creepy weird. Also looking cool was Sam Elliott. He looked like a confident, dick-swinging low cowboy mentor to Johnny Blaze. Cage was... well, Cage.
Not sure what to think of what I saw. On the surface I liked it, but there is something deep inside me that says that this could go either way. I personally liked what Johnson did with DAREDEVIL and the DVD cut was a big step better. I'm hoping GHOST RIDER is just as drastic a step up as the director's cut of DAREDEVIL, but without seeing any of the effects work on the Ghost Rider, I really don't know how it'll come off. It has a good cast, especially with the supporting characters and Johnson has an enthusiasm that is infecting.
I got my fingers crossed on this one. What about you folks?

Now that that's out of the way....This actually sounds like it's shaping up to be a decent flick. Just hope to God it's not a piece of shit like Daredevil. --Cliff

You were FIRST!

Waited too long. Still, I call First on actually posting something relevant to the news. --Cliff

relevancy? in a talkback? that's a big imagination you've got there. as far as ghost rider is concerned... the chance of it being even remotely good are as slim as the chance of moviemack growing a brain, and developing decent taste in cinema- SLIM TO FUCKING NONE.
-
Maybe they'll team Furry with "Black Panther Cub" for the most ADORABLE superhero movie ever! (Wow, am I ever procrastinating to have written a post like this. Back to work, for Chrissakes....).
-
Saw the footage as well and thought it was pretty ****'in cool considering they had just finished shooting. Mendez was GORGEOUS in the flesh!!!
-
Good to hear they're keeping his obsessive sports-watching an integral part of his character.
-
He deserved better than Thunderbolt Ross. Actually thought Daredevil was pretty good. Especially the D.C. But got shit on by the Affleck-haters.
-
...as long as Fox isn't making it. They're too busy destroying FF.

right?

Is it just me, or was this all mentioned before in an earlier report? And I always though Nic Cage had a woody woodpecker tat on his arm (a shiney golden dubloon for the first person who gets that)

so when ghostrider gets the blues his flame turns BLUE?! Hah get that chump some chessy mac and cheese. ITS THE CHEESIEST!

Wasn't that from Raising Arizona? I think that was just for the movie...
-
About the 'Spidey 3' villains that is to say. Anyhoot, thanks for the info. I don't really know what to think of this one either, so I'll just wait and see how it turns out. And I feel uncomfortable liking Nic Cage when so many people don't care for him, but I do. Oh well, whatever.
-
I agree with you, Ribbons. Nic Cage is one of the best actors we have. I think it's only on this site where he catches shit. He's obviously well liked by most people as he's been starring in movies ever since he was a teenager.
-
Ghost Rider was one of my favorite comics when I was but a wee lad. Or is that Whee Lad? Fuck, I'm old...
-
...(speaking from trailers of course, 'cause I have no fucking intention of ever seeing it) is that the CG for Torch's flames got pretty good there in that last bunch of clips. Fire is *really* tricky to do in CG, moreso than even water. In LotR with the Balrog they got very close, but didn't quite nail it. But, whichever studio did the fire CG in Hellboy (years before FF, I might add) ownz massively. I couldn't believe how good the effects on Liz were. I guess what I'm saying is the CG effects are now mature enough to make Ghost Rider look truly awesome, IF the right people do it. And I like Sony Pictures Imageworks (mostly because of some nice work on Contact), so I have hope.
-
yeah, I think that tat was only for Raising Arizona, but what a film...the part when Nic and John Goodman are trying to fight and just wreck themselves, the whole nappy-stealing sequence, "Sometimes I get the menstral cramps real hard", Yoda jammies, "You ate sand?"... definitely my fav Nic Cage movie. When restrained, Nic is a great actor, but when he's doing that 'freaky' Face Off gurn-acting, he bugs the shit out of me. And as long as Ghost Rider's doesn't carry a toy bunny in a box strapped to the Hell Cycle, I'm good with this so far...
-
It's got a great cast. It's got the look of Ghost Rider down perfectly. The hell cycle kicks ass so we really don't have much to bitch about right now. I read in another report that the clip included a shot of Ghost Rider flying past a highway patrolman going 999 mph. I personally think he should be going 666 mph. It'd be a nice touch.....
-
Nah, that would just be cheesy. The reading of '999' means he's going faster than what the speedgun can work out; he's maxed it out. Only my opinion, tho!
-
Jessica Simpson wants it. A certain multiple award-winning comic writer with two adaptations of his work in development has been approached.
-
Isn't it pennance stare? Or is it penis stare? Anyway, Nick will rule because Nick rules. People just hate because he's Nick Cage and they want to be Castor Troy. I think the simpler they keep GR the better it will be. The history of the book and the characters are way to complicated for anyone not of geek/fanboy status.
-
As far as i could tell, it was the Thrush auto parts logo, and not woody...

Worldwide gross of $179,179,718, tends to mean that someone out there liked it. Honestly, it wasn't that bad on the directors cut. So can we just stop the hating of daredevil. There are a lot of people who get on these things just to complain, those people live in their mother's basement, read a lot of comics and haven't seen pussy since they came out of one. We get it, your life sucks, you make minimum wage or blow it all on "Magic: The Gathering" card, you have reason to bitch about things. But these talkbacks are getting so cliche, repetitive, and frankly boring though. If you don't have anything positive to add to the discussion, have a nice big glass of shut the fuck up already. Daredevil disappointed you, no kidding, you have posted that every single time someone mentions it for the past two years. Get over it already, move on, get a life. If you need to work out some stress, I will give you a quarter so you can go downtown and get the retards at the slow kids school to give you a hand job or something. Just get a over it already, please!

Um, maybe I read that wrong but Sam Elliot was not The Dude.
by i dunno
He was the Stranger. He'd kick your ass if you called him a dude.....As for the rest of the Marvel characters they plan to film, boy they're really skull fucking the shiat out of the remaining Marvel lineup aren't they? Say what you want about the DC characters. At least they have a modicum of dignity (ok, not Wonder Woman). But Captain America? Are they actually going to release a Captain America movie? Holy shiat. And Black Panther? Black Panther. Just give me notice on these projects so I can retreat to my heavily fortified rec-room.

I'm glad to read Sony Imageworks is doing the Visual Effects and the cast sounds like a great line-up to me. Melbourne has some great looking run-down areas and with Russell Boyd behind the camera - one of Australia's best - and music by David Arnold, I am very excited to see this movie.
They also have Kirk M Petruccelli as Production Designer - he did "Blade", "The Patriot" & "Tomb Raider" to name a few!
Let's hope Paramount keep the money coming for more DC adaptations...

I was at Comic Con and saw the teaser. Despite only having a very very short glimpse of Zarathos the clip was awesome and played great. Probably my third favorite after Superman and Kong.

They guy that asked about Daredevil didn't ask ANYTHING AT ALL about the studio leaving the director with a full cut. He said, "Hey, love the Ghost Rider footage and I hate to be the a**hole but Daredevil, what the f*(#?".............................Mark Stephan Johnson was amazingly cool about it and said it was okay if he didn't like the movie and he was sorry but that he was forced to cut 30 minutes of the story - as if THAT was the only problem with Daredevil.

Ghost Rider is a shit character. Demon on a motorcycle. Ooooh. Sounds like something invented by that stoner special-ed kid who always sat in the back of detention hall scribbling on the desk. Please, Avi, no more films of crappy characters. No Ghost Rider, no Deathlok, no Brother-mother-fucking-Voodoo. We want Captain America, Silver Surfer, and Thor. And while you're at it, get MSJ to stop wasting his talent and get him cracking on DD2.

Dude, don't get yourself in a lather over Daredevil bashing. The film was pretty bad in certain respects and I don't live with the parents, play Magic or have a slump from pussy. Box office and insulting people in trite retreads of other over-generalizing insults do not make Daredevil any better. I didn't hate Daredevil but it irritates me that the opportunity was wasted.................On another note, why anybody thinks a character with a hellcycle, a hell shotgun and a hell chain is going to be amazing cinema is beyond me. A hellish superhero on a flaming motorcycle? Wow................Eva Mendes is beautiful.
-
Well....maybe...As long as they dont do like they did with FF4 with a marketing campaign aimed at the MTV crowd and 9 year old kids. Over on the FF4 sequel board there are already a whole line of people wiht posts like "Well what they need to do for this next one, blah blah blah...". They still haven't realized that they are not going to change a thing. They have the money making template. Kids and the MTV gerbils flocked to see it. Even geeks over on that board threw their money away for that "popcorn movie" and "good mindless fun" and "liked it for what it was". So given that, there is no way they are going to change or improve the direction of FF4 when they already have a money making template for the next one. I can't help but have that feeling though that this is going to be a REALLY watered down version of Ghost Rider that only vaguely resembles the comic. Especially with a PG-13 rating.

(sorry, pressed enter by accident) Though everyone's been bitchin bout Avi not doing the big reveal of the villains for Spidey 3 at the Con, from everything I have heard and seen it looks pretty certain that Topher will be dying his hair blonde and be playing none other than Eddie Brock in a "re-imagined" version of Venom...make of that what you will, but it seems that the franchise is going to continue to follow the pattern of being 'inspired' by the Original Supes films. Looks like the script will have Topher playing a bad version of Peter Parker, basically exactly what they did in Supes 3, except this conceit is externalised rather than internalised. Topher will be a version of Peter with all of the powers but none of the responsibilities. Seems that Hayden-Church is a lock on for Sandman also, just don't expect him to be more than a supporting character in the film. One final tit-bit, seems that pre-production has involved the building of prop bombs..pumpkin bombs to be exact...

It's a lot better than what was released in theaters. All the new scenes (except for a couple of bad wire-fu shots from Matt Murdock's youth and a stupid, stupid scene of Bullseye smuggling paper clips (!) and scaring dogs at the airport) improve upon the original movie. Proof that Fox doesn't know what the hell they're doing: R-rating aside, I bet that 'Daredevil' would have done more bank if they put what is considered the Director's Cut out in Feb. 2003.
-
Wow, and here I thought it was penance. Thanks, kids!
-
In the latest issue of EW, Thomas Haden Church says his character in SpiderMan 3 will be "...A horse of Many Different Colors...".
So, don't be so sure about that Sandman prediction. -
Unless that's what he WANTS you to think....
-
Sooo...pumpkin bombs, Venom and Sandman. If this is accurate there are at least THREE villains in 'Spider-Man 3.' Personally, one would have been fine. I don't know, I just hope they don't overload the film. I'll be kind of disappointed if Harry does go green. He should have forgiven Peter, if you ask me (which I know nobody did, nor will, but nuts to them). Makes more sense character-wise unless they just plan on making him a complete nutcase. And I'm not even going to get into another stupid debate over whether or not it HAS to happen because it happened in the comics. Those who feel that way have different priorities; I disagree with them and they disagree with me, but there's no proving it so please, let's leave it at that. Anyway yeah, three villains. Well, we'll have to wait and see how that pans out. They might be waiting until next year's Comic-Con for the big unveiling, but seeing as that's less than a year before 'Spider-Man 3' comes out, word will have had to have leaked before then.
-
He's the only actor to issue the line "That there's the De-Van!"
-
...you really shouldn't complain about that sort of thing if you toss around the whole "basement dweller" stereotype. By the way, something I've just recently thought about: it seems to me people always say "mom's basement" instead of "parents' basement." Are they taking the image from somewhere or is it some sort of Oedipal thing that they're going for?
-
It's not just better, but in some ways a different movie altogether. Johnson did a really good job of capturing the mood of Frank Miller in this version.
-
Saw him at the Comic Con, what a good guy, really impressed me with his knowledge of the Ghost Rider.

I'll pay to see that...

Three villians is waaay too many for any superhero movie
by zer0cool2k2
well, unless they're basically one villian in the form of three, like the Phantom zone prisoners in Superman II. Otherwise stick to one big bad per movie, and if you want to set the stage for the sequel with someone else, that's OK. Iagree that just because character A did action B in issue c of the comic doesn't mean it must show up in a movie. (If so, where the Hell is Gwen Stacy?). Just as long as they don't stray too far from cannon. I can deal with organic web-shooters, but don't make Mary Jane become a super-villian. Personally, I think Venom is kind of a crappy character that will be even worse on film. I'd rather see Topher somehow become a second-rate Scarlet Spider, trying to copy Spidey, but going bad in the process.
-
GR is one of the most underrated comic chars ever. I have reprints of the first 5 of the original series. Johny Blaze is possessed by the demon Zarathos who's EVIL. He kills people and laughs crazy and shit. He rides the bike because Blaze is a stunt cyclist.
Even better than that was the reprise in the early 90's where a new guy is possessed by the GR, who Blaze thinks is the original demon and goes to kill him. That series was the best comic book ever, as well as Spirits of Vengeance, where Blaze and the new GR team up. Along the way thaey meet up with Spiderman, Venom, Dr. Strange, The Punisher Daredevil, etc.
The first 70 or so of that GR series was the best written, drawn and inked comic I've ever seen. Later, they started using different people and it went all to shit. BAD SHIT.
This movie better rule! But I'm not getting my hopes up. -
I will try to netflix it today. I did not hate Daredevil really. I just thought it had too many different DD stories crammed into one movie. But I'll check out the DC.
-
Now that Raimi's gotten his bad costumes out of his system with the original Green Goblin and his depressed, lonely hero out of his system with the second movie, this last one can be beginning to end Spidey action. They still need to get rid of Dunst, though. She suuuucksss! And I mean that literally, how else did she get the part? I hope we get a new team for Spidey 4. Bring on David Fincher and do the Fearful Symmetry story.
-
"After is cute little non reveal. "Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace..hahaha" I would have stood up and shouted! You're a fucking assface and I hope someone covers your kids in cockchowder!"
That's just uncalled for. But pretty damn funny. -
After issue 70-ish they totally fucked it up with guys like Pop Mahn (sp?) coming in to draw. He made it look lie a fucking My Little Pony book. Then to add insult to injury they cancelled the book ONE ISSUE from the end of the series so the story (albeit a lame one) was never resolved. Never forgave Marvel for that.
-
The DD director's cut does not solve the problems in the film. Profit you were RIGHT when you said there was too much crammed into one film and this adds the plot element of Turk being protected in a court by Matt Murdock. Those who liked DD in the first place will like it a little better and those who didn't will just have a longer movie to not like. Murdock still fights Elektra on a teeter totter.
-
Who is the villain in this film? And i think maybe Church's comments could mean sandman is the villain because sandman can take different shapes, I dont know. It would be cool but so could the chameleon.........cockchowder?
-

Chameleon would be cool, but I've just settled into the not
by iamnicksaicnsn
because Mysterio could really only be appropriately played by Bruce Campbell. As for Chameleon, I don't think THC (woo! cool abbreviation letters) is slick enough for him. Julian McMahon probably could have done it, definitely someone who looks like him, that sort of thing.

Sorry Quint. Daredevil blew. I grew up a huge fan of the original Ghost Rider. As matter of fact, Ghost Rider is the very first comic book series I can remember collecting...religeously going to store each month for. If these guys go turn Ghost Rider into Daredevil, I'm going to be pissed. Even after Daredevil is out and done with, that these guys still can't see the inherant flaws in that picture doesn't bode well for this one. (Contrary to popular belief within this site, more did not make it better.) Nick Cage is a step up from Ben Craplick, but if Cage plays it too over-the-top as he tends to do, he can be just as much of a hindrance. I'd like to believe in Ghost Rider, but as of yet, I haven't heard a thing about this production to make me believe.
-
The crowd reacted huge to the Ghost Rider clip. And when the poster came out I went crazy. Fucking Ghost Rider! With his cackling skull and his chain whipping from overhead. It was great!!! The Hellcycle was there on the floor and it was even more bad ass in person than it is on the net. My three buddies and me walked away really pumped for this afterwards!

Yeah, no shit!
They did cancel right at the the end. i just got out some of those issues. I'm reading the original gr rides again re-issue and it interests me to see which way they'll go in the film.
It may be tough to convey the dark, brooding feeling of the books, which for the un-initiated have an almost All Hallow's Eve- Sleepy Hollew-esque feel all the time with dark blue graveyards and stark trees. There's a very cool, hanging in graveyards and sneaking around on Halloween, feel to it. -
Daredevil wasn't Spidey 1 or 2, but it definity was not Batman & Robin!!! Give Johnson a break. With a limited budget(as every studio does to Marvel characters they deem not well known, ala X1, Punisher, Man-Thing), having to cut half an hour out, and making an origin movie out of several different known stories, I think the guy did a good job. He could of just put Affleck in a black unitard and put a suction-cup on the end of the billy club. Besides the teeter-todder scene the moive was cool and I haven't even see the DC yet. If you thought DD was crap grab a camera, some friends, and make a Fanfilm and shut the hell up. I would do it for all of Crap-Man movies but someone beat me to it. They called them Dead End and Batman the animated series, and Batman Beyond. Begins sucked. Wheres my 3CCD-DVC and cowl at?

I thought there was a rumor that there was four baddies in SP3?
by spectrebeeyatch
Which made me believe that would lead to six where Raimi would just try and end it all, trying to make Sp4 difficult to make. The baddies: Harry's Goblin (Hob or Green), THC Sandman, TG Venom, and the Vulture or Electro or Mysterio. I agree with everyone that is too many. Personally Harry's Goblin and Sandman are fine, maybe Electro and Sandman and maybe set up Venom for later movies. But three or more in one film will just be over the top and bad. Only movie to get away with that was Godzilla: Final Wars.

I also feel Daredevil suffered from being released after Spiderm
by mr. profit
Thank you Fox execs. Instead of a gritty, darker film, it was a big PG13 film that was trying to appeal to little kids. Avi is talking smack about Batman Begins by saying that anyone can make a dark movie and he can do dark and brooding with his eyes closed. So why was Daredevil too safe, and why after having his WHOLE bloodline pretty much wiped out in Puerto Rico, The Punisher resorts to gossipy tactics. OMG the guys sleeping with your wife. Let me move this hydrant. Avi needs to shut the fuck up. He's getting old and out of touch. He's slowly ruining Marvel film adaptations. And God help us when Marvel gets their own studio. Expect crap, crap, and more crap.
-
I just thought DAREDEVIL sucked outright. It was doomed from the start with the casting of Affleck and Garner. The plot was weak, the childhood Daredevil scenes were silly, the acting from A & G was attrocious, the music was forgetful, and most of the action scenes were just too damned cartoony (I blame the direction). None of this had anything to do with budget. I just the think the film was a complete miss. Which is a shame because I really think DD has a lot of potential as a film series. It's very unconventional and completely at odds with other comic book superhero movies. Hey, I'm hoping as much as the next guy that they learned from their mistakes with that one to turn in a winner with GHOST RIDER. But if they don't even see any problem with DAREDEVIL, how am I supposed to believe GHOST RIDER will be any better.
-
...was obviously not for everyone. I didn't hate the theatrical release. Felt a bit condensed and, therefore, contrived to me. Wasn't going to check out the Director's Cut until a trusted friend recommeneded it. Putting back the stuff that was lost did make the movie better, at least for me. You saw more of Matt the lawyer which helped you understand Matt the ass kicker. I look at that movie much as I do The Matrix in that I appreciate it (the DD Director's Cut) despite loathing its star. The teeter totter scene did, indeed, blow, though. They should've done DD as a three movie arc with Elektra getting killed in the first one, DD getting his revenge on Bullseye int he second and Kingpin hiring Nuke to take DD out in the third. Then DD could've worked his way up to the Kingpin and that character could've been more menacing and iconic (Duncan was fine in the role). I tend to agree that three villains in one Spider Man movie would be too much, but Raimi has yet to let me down with that franchise so I'll trust his judgment. I've got a good feeling about Cage as Ghost Rider. He's wanted to play a comic book hero for so long, and if any comic character was made for his manic depressive acting style, Johnny Blaze wasprobably it.
