First English Look At Chan Wook Park's SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE!

Published at:  Jul 18, 2005 11:37:15 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a link to the first english language comments from the first press screening in South Korea of Chan Wook Park's 3rd Film in his Revenge Trilogy called SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE! One of my absolute most anticipated films of 2005 is this movie. Darcy's review at KoreaFilm.Org is little more than a few impressions based upon that first press screening. The film doesn't seem to be the unleashed fury of the first two, but rather - a more deliberate film. Here's his initial impression:

I did like it quite a bit. It's perhaps harder to digest in one sitting than OLD BOY or MR. VENGEANCE. Even though watching it is quite intense in parts, it's the sort of film that leaves you thinking afterwards, and I imagine my feelings about it will continue to evolve over time.

I absolutely can not wait to see this film. Can't wait to hear more.

Koreans make movies? When did this start?

    by serious black

First electronics, then cars, now films. What'll they think of next? Seriously, I keep hearing about this Chan Wookiee Park dude but I've never seen any of his movies at my local video store. Do they really exist? Is this all just a big joke at my expense? If so, it's not funny, guys.

Did this guy even see the movie?

    by ivehadsex

Seriously. THis says nothing. He could have seen the trailer. This is almost as vague as that FF "review" they had a few weeks ago.

I don't think that counts as a masterpiece of EARLY German cinema, but I'd bet both testicles has seen it and enjoyed it. I wish we could have an interview with Park wherein he speaks about the films which inspire him. Anyway, what I really want to know is "when is this film being released in the UK?" That is all.

this will be better than all the summer movies combined

    by fried samurai

Yeah I said it.Chan Wook Park is probably the most interesting filmaker working today.A couple things you can expect from this film.No shitty dialogue, shitty cgi, things blowing up for no aparent reason. Its funny every time Harry posts something about this guy you barely see 10 posts. The guys made 3 great films in a row.And his short in three extremes wasnt too shabby.Yet when some Fincher news comes out fan boys drool uncontrolably.I just dont get it the guys made one great film and one mediocre serial killer flick.Finchers last 2 films were pure utter shit.Does he have it in him to back another masterpiece sure but I have yet to see it...peace

More on Park Chan-wook Influences & Pic from Screening

    by cinemastrikescsb

For more on the films that inspire Park Chan-wook, pick up either of the Tartan Reg. 2 DVDs for "Oldboy" and "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance", both contain many interviews w/ English Subtitles where he talks about films that have influenced him. These will also be out soon on Reg. 1 USA from Tartan, so if you don't have an all region player you will be in luck then. There is also a Hollywood Reporter interview from last year where Park Chan-wook mentions several films, most notably Hitchcock's "Vertigo" as having a profound effect on him. There is a pic and small bit of further info on the first screening of "SFLV" here: http://english.kbs.co.kr/mcontents/entertainment/1357454_11692.html

I agree with the other talkbackers, this review gave us about as much insight as me sticking my head up Harry's ass to give a comprehensive review. No substance. I just want to see the damn movie.
