Comic-Con: A report on the FAMILY GUY DVD MOVIE panel!!!

Published at:  Jul 18, 2005 2:37:46 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a short report on the goings on during the FAMILY GUY dvd movie panel from this past weekend's Comic-Con. I wish I could have been there, but I was stuck interviewing hot blondes. Woh is me, right? Anyway, I wish I could get a little more detail about the footage shown, but at least it's a tease... interesting to see how Fox is planning on cross-releasing this on both DVD and TV... Still, I can't wait! I love FAMILY GUY almost as much as I love taffy... and I love taffy... hmmm... taffy...

Hi Harry-

I was looking at the Comic Con coverage and hadn't seen anything on the Family Guy panel for the strait to DVD movie "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story".

The panel began with a short intriduction of the film. It was said that it will follow Stewie in his quest to find his real father after a near death experiance.

The movie was originally intended to be a three part episode, but the Fox pushed for a full movie, so they added and introduction and closing (for more see the clips farther down).
The movie WILL be shown on television in three parts, and on DVD. The DVD will feature material that the broadcast wont (ie swearing, etc.) and the
TV version will contain material that the DVD doesn't have, so Fox is forcing the fans to both buy the DVD and watch the show to get the eintire thing.

After the introduction and a few questions the first clip played. It was a trailer for the film that began with the news casters Tom and Diane givign their
news report about the premier of the Stewie Griffin movie. It then proceded to show a series of breif clips that while funny seemed disjointed. After
the clips there was more Q&A which was pretty boring (sadly nothing real fun or exciting revealed here). During this section about half of the audience left.

Then the presentors warned us not to all leave because there was another clip. The second clip was the first 5 minutes of the film. It was a great Hollywood
red carpet intro with characters from the film arriving at the premier of the film, including the main characters, and my favorite the mute covered in oil. When
Peter and Lois arrive Lois is drop down drunk and proceeds to vomit, and curse (hurray for no ratings on a DVD!). Lois' drunken antics were by far the best
part of the clip. I can't wait until this thing is realeased on DVD!

So anyway that is my take on the Family Guy Panel, if you use this call me Tefabob!

according to ign.com, anyways. THe dude who voices half the cast apparently stated that they're doing a straight to DVD release, with the option to make a second one, with most of the cast signed on for it. I figure that it's relatively on topic, and people would want it to be known

Sounds so far like a weak attempt to cash in with the casual fans who don't get most the the real humour and only want to see stupid and pointless crap like someone puking and swearing. Gee, I wonder if there will be poop jokes as well.

I have been a huge family guy fan since it was first on Fox (albeit sporadically) and have seen every episode countless times. But this sounds stupid. And if it isn't stupid then these bandwagon jumper fans are making it sounds stupid.

And a series of clips appearing to be disjointed? Really? Because if they weren't you wouldn't be watching clips, you'd be watching a movie.

I'll wait for someone who knows what they are talking about, and who is a real fan of the show to write in.

    by danielkurland

That bit on last night's new episode was probably one of the funniest things the show has ever done. The bit where Peter was "explaining" the joke was also gold. A little discouraging that this will in fact air on TV, and those buying the movie and the DVD season set, will have the same thing twice virtually. Also, swearing and crudeness won't be enough to make this movie great, but I'm sure the film is not dependant on that.

  • It's always bugged me that he defends the Simpsons, but hates Family Guy. How can you not admit that Family Guy runs circles around The Simpsons and has for about 4 years now? I am a Smith fan, but his head is really far up his ass on this issue and it bugs me...A LOT. His Clerks cartoon (which I liked) takes a shot at Seth McFarlane also. All his brown nosing fans on that message board over there agree with him so as not to upset Emperor Smith. Just admit when you're wrong. Simpsons had a time and a place, but it's far from cutting edge anymore. Shit, it's far from funny anymore. The worst Family Guy jokes are funnier than the last Simpsons episode I watched. I used to love Matt Groening (as far back as Life In Hell comics), but I cannot defend a show that isn't funny anymore. Sorry Kevin, Family Guy is 100 times better than the Simpsons, you stubborn bastard (still like you though).

It never gets old for me that Brian is a dog but acts like a human and no one cares. Also I like how he is loyal to the family like a dog. His funniest scene for me is when Chris says to him "You can't tell me what to do, you're just a dog, you don't have a soul." And Brian is taken aback and with all sincerity replies, "Ouch!" Its just so absurd.

First let me say that I want to have all kinds of sex with Lois. then let me agree that that is fucking weird that Kevin Smith doesn't like Family Guy- maybe he has a personal thing with McFarlane. Is that confirmed that he doesnt like that show? How could anyone not like that show. If you don't like that show you are stupid- a classic talkback argument that is especially appropos in this situation. And not stupid like unsmart- stupid like I hate you. because if you dont like Family Guy then I hate you, I think that's actually true, I'm not even exaggerating. I cannot see myself being friends with anyone who doesnt like that show. also I LOVE Futurama, even though when it first came out I didnt care for it at all. but there's only a few episodes that can make me laugh as hard as most episodes of Family Guy do. so its not as good. because I am the barometer for goodness. I hope I did not neglect to mention all of the sex I wish to have with Lois. because I would be remiss in leaving that out. at this point also keep in mind that I do not actually KNOW what remiss means.

    by homergator

I didn't know he hated Family Guy. I read Newsaskew weekly (I used to be big time about the site, but just been getting a little SMithed out lately, but sitll love the guy's work). What dig did he give to McFarlane in his Clerk's cartoon? I must have missed that too, and I have the DVD. I'd love to know because I saw the Clerk's cartoon well before I saw Family Guy, and while I live Fmaily GUy a lot better, it felt a lot to me like what Clerks might have gone on to be. Especially the cutaways and the non sequiters. I mean, the cutaway with Judge Reinhold stuffing bananas in the tailpipe gag was a great Clerk's bit that felt like Family GUy, but I have to say the single funniest Clerks joke they did was in the first episode when they get into the car that has just transofrmed from a Robot, but when they get to their destination it transformas back to a robot with them sitll inside, thereby crushing and killing them all. That moment was VERY Family Guy. SOunds like a jealousy issue to me. Clerks never got the chance Family Guy did...airing four episodes over the middle of summer, does not put much faith in a show, or give it ANY chance.

    Clerks cartoon

    by robotlordoftokyo

As I remember it,the diss came in the "we need to be more like the Clerks movie" episode. At the surreal bit at the end, where Gill and Randal go into the writers room, one of the writers is holding a book called, "How to write cartoons by Seth McFarlane." Which I found wierd, since they were laying into him for lazy self-referentiality during the most lazy self-referential ending I've ever seen a cartoon have. I'd be bitter about it, being a huge fan of Family Guy, but the "so they had to graft the Presidents head to the bdy of a gorrila to stop him turning into a vampire!" line from that episode made me cry.

I kinda wanna see this Family Guy movie thang just to see if it explains why Stewie isn't funny any more. Since his megalomaniac streak ended, he's just been pointless.

    by lordenigma

Futurama had it's moments, but the show had an underlying creepiness to it. Which always left me feeling cold or disturbed by Cohen's and Groening's version of the future. The finale, though, ruled all. It had it's moments, but unlike Family Guy. It went as far as it could go.

A misfire that seemed to go on for far too long. However, the He-Man gag more than made up for it. As for Stewie's father it was probably the crippled cop (whose name escapes me) he banged Lois sooooo hard he broke his spine. The old back crack 'n' skeet.

    by abaddon9

TubgirlTonay, I read some talkbacks today, and in every single one you say that a particular series is a ripoff of something Whedon wrote.. Either you are the most extreme apologist for Whedon or your delusional. First, when you make a claim like this, you provide no concrete examples, but make inferences that all these creators copied Whedon, who is the great orginator of these ideas and concepts. Get a freaking clue, while it is a freaking cliche, yes there is no orginail story/idea, it is fresh spins. Greatest example.: Whedon has stated that HE HAS BASED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS FEMALE CHARACTERS ON ANOTHER FICTIONAL CHARACTER: KITTY PRYDE OF THE X-MEN! Does this mean he plagerized? According to your previous posts, yes. And before you start bashing me for hating Whedon, don't I am a big fan, I was one the few pweople that actually saw Buffy the movie, I saw the premiere episode already liking the concept. However, Whedon isn't perfect, no one is. So get your head out off wherever it is stuck and stop claiming everybody is ripping of Whedon, because they are not. Because if you don't I and others will point out where Whedon got his inspirition (notice I didn't say copied/stole/plagerized)

His message board is at viewaskew.com, but I haven't posted in years. I believe they want $2 now to sign up (money goes to charity) so I said fuck it. I'm done on that site. I do read posts occasionally over there and he will not discuss Family Guy, just blast it once and a while. He also has an online diary where he always mentions watching The Simpsons before going to bed. Who knows what his beef is. I do question Kevin's sense of humor now though. ANd yes, the Seth McFarlane diss on the Clerks cartoon is quick, but blatant and mean. Fuck it. Family Guy will crank out 100 more episodes and Clerks died with 6. I guess I'd be pissed too if my little cartoon wasn't given a second chance at life like Family Guy.

Really who cares? He could dislike baby kittens and it wouldn't affect me. I remember awhile back people tried to start some beef between him and Paul Thomas Anderson and Smith was just like so what if I didn't like Magnolia, who cares? and he's right you shouldn't care. I mean seriously he's milked it for all its worth & more and yet still he persists. I say fuck kevin smith! family guy is cutting edge and way funnier, now given we have american dad as the ugly step brother but family guy is still by far one of the funniest shows on tv. so unless smith has anything new to bring to the table he hasn't a leg to stand on! that's my 2cents and i'm sticking to it!

    Whedon's Kitty Pryde

    by abaddon9

So let me get this straight, when Whedon directly sttes something that goes against your worldview, he is being ironic? If he had such a negative view of this craracter, why is WRITING HER? Yep, that is why he is writing X-men right now, to get a chance of writing one of his favorite chacters that he didn't create. And his statement of Buffys and other female characters just recently came up with X-3 casting. On the Serenity message boards he wrote: "Summer did read for Kitty in 'X3.' I know because she called me and mentioned she was going to and did I know anything about the character (there were no 'sides' to study -- they had to get them when they came in). So the girl I turned into sort of a superhero in my movie was going to read for the character that most influenced ALL my girl-heroes, Kitty Pryde. Karmically funky. Anyhoo, she called me after and said it was very emotional and kind of like when she read for 'FIREFLY,' she just got into a very intense groove. She started telling me about the scene she read and that's when I realized WHY it was kind of like she read for 'FIREFLY.' 'Cause (as you may know) it was a scene I wrote for 'Astonishing X-Men' issue #5. I assume they just didn't have sides ready and used that but this was like a karmic Moebius strip, it was just too folded in on itself. In this time of odd, I turned to beer. (No I didn't. Stay in school.) I don't know what the X-peeps are looking for -- or even if that other girl has really dropped out -- but for my money, Summer would make a wonderful Kitty. (And I don't say that lightly)."

That sounds ironic huh? Whedon has stated that Kitty represents the proto-Buffy. Yes she's not blond, nor a victem, and those are not the only things about Buffy either. Yes he started out that idea of the blond victem turning the tables, but he drew on other sources to make her a strong character. He has stated over and over. If he was joking he would not be writing Kitty or at every monent talking about her mentioning how that character influenced his charcters.

My entire point was Whedon didn't copy anything, and neither did anybody that you said copied from him. They mave have drawn inspiriation from each other. Thing is you want it two ways, only Whedon is original and others copy from him, but when Whedon draws inspiriation from. Oh, btw Whedon is now writing that child's comic book as mentioned before, does that make any his ideas less thought out and valid, or is that only Television is the great adult medium? Oh, wait we already established that you are a hypocrite.
Also, notice something I did that you did not do. I backed up my argument, so again I say stop it. Whedon is one of the better writers, but he is not God or a fountain of original ideas that everybody else is just copying, so take your own advice a get a fucking clue.

    Apologies to Computerguy68

    by abaddon9

And I truly do apoligize for cauising you any grief. I was trying to stop Tubgirltony's constant (as in multiple thread) claim that every idea on a television show was somehow copied/plagerized from Whedon. Family Guy has nothing to do with Whedon, which was my point. So once again I am sorry.

On another note, foreignbelt, it seems that you believe that Tubgirltonay was baiting me and I took it. No, I knew she was baiting me like all trolls do. If you notice my firt post I was questioning her motives. I am not even sure if she likes Whedon and just trying to troll, a rabid Whedon is God and can do no wrong fan, or just delusional. Its just that I could not let the rank hypocrisy go. For example, if Whedon copies it a homage, or states that he drew inspiriation from something , well he was just joking and being ironic, while everyone else is a plagirist at the great fountain of originality that is Whedon. However unlike her, I backed my claim up. I just want her to stop this ridiculous claim across all the threads. BTW, if she was baiting, she must of caught herself, because she carried the Kitty Fucking Pryde comment to another thread were no one had mentioned it.

Whedon is so so. He wrote Buffy, it had it's moments; he wrote Alien Ressurrection, it didn't; he wrote Toy Story - bravo! - and X-Men movie and he couldn't be blamed for Halle Berry being a scurvy sea dog.

His run on the child's comic Astonishing X-Men fantastic but I know little about Firefly or it's film. A space western apparently?

Either way, originality is just the modifcation of existing ideas - therefore Whedon is very original and he writes a good Kitty Pryde ;)

He used to want to kill Marge or whatever her name is, and now his bloodlust is gone. Mothers Who Were Almost Killed By Their Homicidal Babies (aka MWWAKBTHB) must have lobbied against McFarland and preventing him from continuing that part of Stewie's murderousness.
