Wanna Know Which Of Tonight's 35SERENITY Screenings Will FeatureThe Whedon Himself''

Published at:  Jun 23, 2005 1:44:01 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

All 35 of tonight’s special “Serenity” screenings in all 35 cities sold out loooooooong ago, so there’s not much to do about this, but …

Barring any last-minute snafus, it appears that the film’s writer-director, Joss Whedon, will greet the lucky few who got tickets to tonight’s screening at the Edwards Jurupa 14-plex in Riverside, Calif.

Are these the last of the hit-and-run Can’t Stop the Signal screenings? Will there be more before the film’s official Sept. 30 release?

Stay tuned.

Were Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader two different people in the early drafts of “The Empire Strikes Back”? All is revealed in The Annotated Screenplays (Star Wars, Episodes IV-VI)

Look! A new book co-edited by big-deal "Buffy"-"Firefly"-"Gilmore Girls"-"The Inside" TV writer Jane Espenson. She introduces each of the essays, and the whole book besides:
Finding Serenity: Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly

Now that you know how it ends, look for clues in the old episodes!! Lost: The Complete First Season on DVD!!

    by arcadia

everyone who wants to see the movie will have already done so by sept. I know he thinks this will encourage word of mouth. Personally, I won't go see it as a matter of principle. Joss left Buffy and Angel out to dry, couldn't even be bothered to try to shop Angel around (left Jeff Bell to do it). All so he could work on his precious Firefly movie when his ego couldn't accept that it was over. Sigh, I don't think Uni expects that much out of it, it'll prolly make back it's money. They had to let Joss do this to get him to do other movies. Can we say vanity project.

    by bouncy x

some people here must have never heard of people who see a movie in theaters more than once. i mean if everyone only ever saw things once, we'd rarely if ever have a movie that surpasses 100 million. the funny thing about those who "bash" Serenity is that if it does fail, they'll gladly come here and gloat. but if it does do very well, they'll come here and make up some moronic excuses to make themselves feel better. so called bashers can't admit when they're wrong, but it makes for funny reading. and the kids here are sometimes quite the funny.

There have what, 9 billion screenings so far? Why'd they bother pushing the release date back? Everyone's already seen it. Keep going this way and there'll be a copy online soon and everyone who wants to watch it will have seen it come September 30th. And Joss will be left standing at a ticket counter with no one to shake hands with.

That trailer looks like a Sci-Fi Channel made-for-TV movie. The kung-fu that woman was doing looked stilted and staged and the acting looked even worse. by supertoyslast

Since you have so often insisted that a late September release isn't the dumping ground that an early September release is, you must be confident that this movie will be successful. After all, if it does badly at the box office you can't now gripe that it's because it got a bad release date. So what is your prediction for the opening weekend? (I know that some movies go on to do better than opening weekend would suggest through word of mouth, but those are very rare and most of the word of mouth should be done by these previews). For the opening weekend what is your prediction and below what figure would it be a failure?

wow...that's bringing out the big guns now. if you think it'll flop that's fine but you dont have to be so insulting, you could have said waterworld or something. lol but i'm a big fan of the show and i can admit that if this is a huge hit i'll be surprised though i expect it to make at least 50million if not more by the time it hits dvd. sure that isn't a lot these days but its better than 15. even if non-fans avoid it like the plague, seeing some of these uber fans here, seems they'll see it 20 times each. but in the end, the movie is made, its coming so as long as i enjoy it, i could care less how much money it makes. i won't die if sequels aren't made or if the series never returns. i'm a big fan but i do have a life outside of tv/movies. lol

    by catvutt

The movie is solid at this point, but not fantastic. There are some great moments, but some problems that will hopefully be resolved by the time it sees full release in September. The bit with River that looks sort of awkward in the Trailer works much better in the film because of the context. It's not really one of the primary set-pieces of the film at all, it's really just River being 'triggered' and calmly kicking ass in a bar. Personally, I think the last reel needs to be completely re-cut, as there's some choppy, confusing areas, and at one point, Morena is off-screen for so long that it's jarring when we cut back to her during the climactic battle. There's also a hokey scene at the ending of the film that I hope is either recut or eliminated completely, because it, in particular, really is somewhat guilty of a Sci-Fi Channel sort of moment. There will be a big bone of contention regarding the fate of one character and the aftermath, that a little re-editing might help as well. I don't have a problem with the event, but do have some issue with the subsequent 'dealing' with it, for lack of a better word. But again, there's some really strong stuff here. The script is pretty tight, and the humor works very well. There's a line by Kaylee that still makes me laugh thinking about it. And the major plot points regarding River and the Reavers are surprisingly well explained. But with all these screenings...is Universal just TRYING to get this thing floating around the net? It's bound to happen.

Everyone thinks they're Kevin Smith on this board

    by tom reagan

Clever and vulgar at the same time. So shocking! If I were 16 I'd probably get a kick out of it. I've never understood why the haters take the time to click on the Whedon related articles and lob insults at something that they could apparently care less about. Who has the time? I could understand if you are a concerned fan or a fan who feels betrayed by the end product, but outside that what's the use? That said, I saw the movie at the last batch of test screenings. I love Whedon's work but I am by no means a "Browncoat". Never even seen a Firefly fan-site. I have the series on DVD. I really enjoyed it. That's the limit of my "fanboyness". I was really looking forward to the movie so when a friend of mine got tickets I jumped at the opportunity to go. Our small group agreed that we'd just be happy if it was as good as one of the better episodes. I think we had fairly reasonable expectations. And then we were completely blown away. The movie was great! I coudn't have been happier with the way it turned out. The FX could've been better but none of us gave a shit because the story was SO strong. The movie held together as one coherent piece. Even the non-fan in our group was impressed and enjoyed herself. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that this is the most entertaining film I've seen in a theater in years! It reminded me of early Spielberg in that way. I do agree that without a big star and a strong, clear marketing strategy this movie will do mediocre at best. I just hope it makes back it's money (which I'm sure it'll do with DVD sales lumped in), because I'd kill to see more Firefly on the big (or little) screen.

Yes i agree the fx looks a touch shoddy but like a previous tb'er said, it won't matter one iota to me aslong as the story is up to Joss' usual standards. I'm expecting alot of hate for this but honestly the haters are just bithcing for the sake of it. Or they just won't give any of it a chance. Bit daft if you ask me. The Hard Truth

    by arrangedletters

    Here be spoilers

I saw the film at the last screening and have been a big enough fan of Joss' work that most of you would accuse me of having a three way with the man and Herc. Truth be told I loved this film and hated it at the same time. It's a great rollickin' adventure that kicked my ass to the wall but with some major flaws. 1. How the hell do a race of mindless savages hell bent on the wholesale distruction of life fly their ships....who leads them? 2. Mr. Universe and the status among the crew he's given. 3. While Joss does funny so damn good and heart wrenching sad at least as well, having a sight gag less than three or so minutes after the death of a major character doesn't work tonally. 4. Said character gets the Anya treatment, there's just not enough of a reaction from the characters or resolution. 5. Why didn't the Reavers wipe out the other 90% who stopped moving? 6. Why didn't the Alliance destroy the Reavers and re-Terraform their planet?

My wife and I will also go to see the movie on opening night. I told two of my co-workers about the show, lent my DVDs to one and the other one rented it. Both fell in love with the show and one got her sister hooked as well.

Let's see, that's five new fans who will go to see the show, and I just became a fan three weeks ago. Who knows how many more people I can turn into "Firefly" fans before the movie opens? And that's just from one person. Last time I heard the DVD set had sold over 500,000 units and that was in November or so, God knows how many have bought it by now. Imagine how many people will see Serenity if the die hards continue to tell others about the show? "Firefly" may have had shitty ratings on Fox, but that means nothing considering how many fans they picked up since then.

... no matter what is said in this site. Enjoyed the series, like sci-fi flicks, and always give them the benefit of the doubt. If I watch them and hate them, THEM I;ll verbally fry them. Til then, bring on the sci-fi! Don't bitch too loud about these movies, the pricetag attatched to them is making them less and less attractive to studios and soon everything will be Merchant-Ivory films (minus Merchant).

    Captain Mal.....or Master Chief?

    by germancity

Just got home from the screening. Got a chance to talk to Nathan (Capt. Mal) a little bit. Got some Xbox stories out of him. Told him he should play the Master Chief when the get around to making the Halo movie. He said, "Would I have to keep the mask on for the whole thing?"

...where did you see your screening? My home town of Charlotte perhaps?? IF SO, I'M GOING TO BE VERY PISSED! I didn't even find out about it until the local paper's movie reviewer guy mentioned it was coming to town last week and, of course, was already sold out. If I missed Capt. Tightpants, I'm going to kill myself.

    I hated Firefly....until I actually watched it.

...a friend gave me the complete DVDs of the series and I watched them all (13-14 episodes) and now am a HUGE fan of Firefly. I have not yet ever sat through a BUffy or Angel episode and probably never will, not my thing, but Firefly/Serenity is fantastic. Check out the DVDs before seeing the film, is all I can say.

    Wheldon ended Buffy because...

It sucked. All of the little girls who watched it grew up and he lost his audience.

And it was better than I expected. The effects looked a bit unfinished but it was really good.
I'll see it again in September.
