Pre-Filer!! Herc
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
Of the first three installments of “The Inside”? The one airing tonight, “Pre-Filer,” is my favorite.
Rebecca and the VCU are after yet another serial killer, but the big news this week is the killer is clearly killing only really evil people.
Loathe as I am to give away more, know that the episode employs compelling turns enough for two episodes. There’s a funny dialogue-free bit involving thuggish special agent Danny Love (Adam Baldwin). And, early on, a hard-to-miss homage to the best episode of a show “Inside” creator Tim Minear never quite worked on.
9 p.m. Wednesday. Fox.

Highly, highly recommended sets from the first half of 2005:
* The Andy Griffith Show: Season Two
* Angel: Season Five
* The Bob Newhart Show: Season One
* Cheers: Season Five
* Columbo: Season Two
* Gilmore Girls: Season Three
* Miracles: The Complete Series
* Moonlighting: Seasons One and Two
* Murder One: Season One
* Newsradio Seasons One and Two
* Northern Exposure: Season Three
* Seinfeld: Season Four
* The Sopranos: Season Five
* South Park: Season Five
* Wonderfalls: The Complete Series

what's the deal? I thought this was about the inside?

is a book with nearly the same premise. Oh yeah, and Showtime's making it into a show called "Dexter."
-
I've kinda given up on this show and am only going to watch a Jane or Fury written episode.
-
If it stared Adam Baldwin and Katie Finneran... those two "leads" are very boring. I want to see an episode centering around Melody Sim and Danny Love (penned by either Jane or Fury) and then we'll talk.

mediocre program.

I think it would be better with less serial killers and more
by snake_1997
...supernatural junk. This show is begging for an x-files spin, and it oughtta go there.
-
Seriously Herc, what's the deal? What exactly do you find so enthralling about this hum-drum, killer of the week show? Millennium was doing this better 7 years ago.
-
But I'm a little unimpressed with the show so far as well. The whole "battle for her soul" is a little overwrought (why keep a guy who challenges you constantly on your team?), and Baldwin/Finneran have waaaaaay too little to do. I'm watching tonight's ep, but considering it's potentially a great topic, if my reaction isn't more than 'meh', I'm going back to watching Good Eats.
-
Peter coyote was on 4400 and left to do The Inside. 4400 sucks major balls despite the seemingly popularity of the show. The Inside may get better but it doesn't look good.

Actually, there isn

this site is usually very tolerant of first posters, what could be so bad that it had to be deleted? Anyway, I predict that the buffy reference is some some sort of joke about dry-cleaning.

not "loathe"
-
i like this show. the teaser for the first episode was one of the coolest things i've seen in a while. i would give the first episode a "B" and last week's was an average "C+" episode, but this week's sounds great. but ratings are poor and it is a summer show, which just goes to show the little faith FOX has for this. remember "The Jury" last year? i only saw a few, but from what I could tell, it wasn't too terrible. any thoughts?
-
Yeah, I'm a little confused by Herc's love for this show, too. The first episode was pretty lame, but I enjoyed the second episode a lot more. I like the "idea" surrounding this episode tonight, but the fact that they are playing it straight confuses me a little. Every time I watch this I just have to wonder if I've seen this before, since it's covering such generic ground. Herc, I hope you're right in the long run ... but I get the feeling we're not going to find out.
-
BTW, did anyone notice that in last week's episode, the team didn't do anything? If the team hadn't intervened, the events would've taken place the same way? Yeah, the ep gave us some nice character moments but that was it ... btw, is anyone else sort of concerned that if the show does well, Baldwin won't be able to do the (God willing) post-Serenity Firefly show? BTW, if any Serenity spoilers pop up as a result of this post, I will kill you.
-
They fly about and say " Ah reckon so" then the pilot makes endearingly comical references to Gina Torres' magnificent bottom.
I miss this show -
If memory serves, she either writes or co-writes next week's excellent episode. Of the four I've seen, last week's was my least favorite, though I loved the ending.
-
Once more with feeling....Angel as a cats name...still 30 min. left...wonder if there'll be anymore...
-
This is supposed to be the episode that makes me a believer?
When the pre-filer made references to the first victim ordering snuff films, a red flag went up. Then later the FBI agents said they found snuff films that he ordered from the internet. What a bunch of bullshit! Where did he order them from snufffilms.com?
This is from http://www.snopes2.com/horrors/madmen/snuff.htm
"Claim: Films are routinely made for distribution in which participants are murdered on camera.
Status: False.
Origins: All
the fretting about it aside, not so much as one snuff film has been found. Time and again, what is originally decried in the press as a film of a murder turns out, upon further investigation, to be a fake. Police on three continents routinely investigate films brought to them, and so far this has always been their verdict. No snuff films. Some clever fakes, yes. But no real product.
(Al Goldstein, publisher of Screw magazine, has a standing offer of $1 million for anyone who can come up with a commercially sold snuff film. That offer has been in place for years. No one has yet laid claim to it.)"
Google snuff films and you will see more of the same. What idiots!
I give up on this show!
-
Since I was actually the 3rd poster, I saw the actual first one before it was deleted. Actually it had nothing to do with the show, which is what the second poster was referring to.
Nothing controversial, it just didn't make any sense. -
...there probably are out there that no one knows about. I know Adam Baldwin is a great actor from Firefly and Angel and the rest of these guys probably aren't bad either if they had something written for them that was anymore inspired than my grocery list
-
seriously animal mother is underrated. dude this show should be called Bait, because that's all FBI Agent Slutty McFuckme is good for. and now I hear people saying that they're not even taking any kind of supernatural or even new/wierd approach to this show. they're just playing it straight. if that's true then Herc what the fuck dude. there's gotta be something more than this coming up. also can anyone satisfy nerd curiosity as to what was the buffy reference Herc was talking about (I assume he meant Buffy- always with the cryptic and the shadowspeak) I got that the cat was named angel but that wasn't exactly early on. and where was the once more with feeling reference?
-
A. An interesting mythology to follow. Rebecca's childhood abduction just isn't fascinating. It took the X-Files an entire season to get it straight, so I don't expect anything solid to materialize for at least another five episodes.
B. Feature more of Adam Baldwin. So far he's been used mainly as a humor tool (and he's pretty damn funny), but I bet he could have a really captivating player.
C. Don't be afraid to step into the supernatural. The only reason I even watch this show is because it the potential to be something akin to the X-Files. You can tell they're still trying to get the characters right and sort everything out. A continuing story involving a killer with supernatural abilities would make for excellent television if done right. How would they go about profiling someone who has tapped outside the known bounds of science? Lots of possibilities here.
D. Don't make this a killer-of-the-week kind of show (like CSI or Law & Order) with a weak plot that they touch upon lightly every month or so. This show can be more than that. -
how could you miss the Once More with Feeling reference? it was a big ass sign...at the movie theater that that one "future" killer guy sat at there was a big ass sign very prominent through out that whole section...
-
It was the name of the movie on the marquee at one of the early crime scenes, where the guy was camped out in his car watching the couple's come out of the movie theater.
-
...new fall season.
-
oh dude. I noticed the sign but didnt even put it together. fucktard. also I thought that Herc's favorite ep was the Body.
-
Don't think so. And maybe that's a good thing. Even though we all like the people involved, a derivative show does not deserve to be kept afloat.
-
According to an article I read here http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/pr.cgi?id=20050621fox01 .
-
that the housewife in this episode was the same woman who played the Runaway Nun in Wonderfalls? (probably not since i'm one of only 4 people who watche the show...)
-
I loved Wonderfalls. Next weeks preview shows the Canadian Housekeeper is on it. The commentaries on the Wonderfalls eps talk about the guest actors quite a bit.
-
The show is pretty sub-par from top to bottom - and I really wanted to like it. Its biggest problem is the writing. They seem to get the plots and premises down okay, but the actual dialogue is just plain bad. At several points, the dialogue was so predictable that I was reciting the lines before the actors on the television said them. The second biggest problem is that they are focusing on the wrong characters. The chemistry between Locke, Web, and Generic Hero Guy is DOA. Baldwin, the redhead, and the African-American forensics guy are the ones who should be primarily featured.
-
yeah it was okay, although i wished that the pre-filer got his ass blown to bits but that didn't happen. i love how gory they can be and get away with on this show. i just noticed how creepy the theme music is! the entire episode should be like that, and cut the shitty techo-rock stuff they had in there.

Adam Baldwin is cool. Show was good, little slow near the end.
by the heathen
Loved Baldwin's silent moment showing the kid how to hold the gun. And The Once More With Feeling billboard was sweet. Wish they could have had a picture of somebody from the show on it though. I think the Pre-Filer would be a cool premise for a show (with a little less crazy person) where you have this vigilante who is always a step ahead of the bad guys and the good guys. I got bad vibes from the Boreanaz show previewed. Will see.
-
I saw some of last nights episode (at least until Becky got captured AGAIN by the bad guy... is this a running joke on the show?) What crap. I'm also surprised how over whelmingly negative buzz for this show has been. Not only on this site but others. I thought there's be more people coming to defend it but when the best post is "it was okay" there's a problem.
-
Calling The Inside - at least to date - "just okay" is about the best that this show could hope for in its current incarnation.
>
And that would be being extremely generous.
>
The shot in the last episode where all four of the field agents were in that living room with pistols drawn after the doorbell rang was pretty cringe-worthy. -
to notice the mistake they made in last night's ep? The newspaper clipping the Pre-filer had pop up on Rebecca's computer had her name as "Becky Locke" instead of Becky George.
-
Yeah, just okay. Actually I liked it when they were at the pre-filer's house, it was as tense and funny as it had been. But the ending just kind of lost steam. I hate that all-American "conscience" agent. That guy is just plain dull.
-
of this series. I predict the 6 episode box set will not sell well. Too bad, it has some nifty bits in there. I agree...cut out Paul, cut the leading lady (wow...she is boring). She gets the woozy "profiler" voice every week...when she tells it exactly how it is...and then she is saved. The end. Ugh. When the reveal Coyote to be the master serial killer, though, that will be great.
Oh, and I see someone in the cast next week uttering the phrase "Cereal killer." You heard it here first.
-
The premise seems to be "She takes on the role of the victim, he takes on the role of the attacker." Unfortunately, that seems to be getting old fast. There is a good cast (which has been underutilized so far --- really a 2.5 character show so far). If they expand it and pull away from making her the designated victim of every week, the show could be good ...
-
let's use this skinny chick as bait. I think they should've call this show "Chum".
-
so adam baldwin's name is second in the opening credits yet he barely has enough screen time to warrant even being in the opening credits. now some shows have them in alphabetical order, i havent noticed if they do too so if so then it makes sense but if not, move his name further back. i like the guy and all but the "stars" of this show are obviously the blonde, coyote and that dark haired guy. the rest are just filler, especially that black guy. he has what, 2mins of screentime per episode and gets his name during the opening? funny.
-
My sentiments have been pretty much expressed here already. The show, for all the talent involved, is criminally mediocre at this point. And, yes, it would appear that Rebecca's captures are a running gag. And what's with Rebecca SITTING HER ASS RIGHT SMACK DAB ON THE CRIME SCENE that soon after the shooting? What, CSI already come and gone that fast? Shouldn't the damn car be in the lab? Naw, don't worry about contaminating evidence, you're a Profiler! You go girl! Anyway...I, as I suspect others did, really wanted to like this show. But it's going nowhere fast.

Here's how I would have revamped The Inside: Millennium 2
by prof. pop-cult
I'd make it a spiritual successor to Millennium. I'd modify the premise slightly: Making it about a young woman who was a kidnap victim as a child who works for a private investigations/security firm that specializes in finding missing persons. (Such a real-life group has been dispatched to Aruba to look for that missing teen girl.) The man who kidnapped and held her as a child was never captured or identified. There's a subtle supernatural element in some of the cases she investigates, and there may be a conspiracy going on within this mysterious organization. Maybe my revamp wouldn't do any better in the ratings, but perhaps it would have a stronger cult following.
-
You know when the killer lowered his weapon to point it someplace else. Well I checked out at that point. She's DUMB.
-
I'd say "just ok" too.. I like the show, but I think they need to turn the 'sick shit' factor up a notch. The most interesting thing about the show to me is the fact that Becky is one step away from becoming a serial killer herself, and Web seems to enjoy pushing her towards it. The other guy can step in to try to 'save her soul' or whatever, but only to make the pay off even better when he fails miserably. Right now it's just too nice.

The Buffy references were cool, but did anyone notice Skinny Pup
by oisin5199
The song was I'mmortal from Greater Wrong of the Right (http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/skinnypuppy/thegreaterwrongoftheright.html#3)
The show may not be brilliant, but it's alright for summer. I'd still watch this any day over any CSI or Law and Order crap. BTW, did anyone mention the cat named Angel, and the fact that he jumped out of the trunk just like the cat did in the opening sequence of Buffy (taken from the Witch episode)? And it did kinda look like James Marster's profile on the billboard. Katie's lines were pretty funny and ditto on the great moment with Jayne (oops...I mean Danny. We'll really he's just Jayne with a better job). -
The biggest mistake the writers have made with this show is shoving too much at the viewer too soon. We have to give a shit about Rebecca Locke before we're going to care about the battle for her soul. We don't, and we don't like the annoying all american agent who's supposed to be her champion. Clumsy writing and how many goddamn serial killers ARE there in LA on a weekly basis. Really that many?
-
...but I'm lovin' it. Of course, I also loved the hell out of Miracles. And Serenity. And Wonderfalls. Basically, I heart the Whedonites, their writing just gets me. I hope The Inside makes it.
-
you don't. You don't argue, either. You empty it into him before he kills you and your partner as he obviously plans. Trusting to dumb luck to save your bacon is pretty poor planning - not to mention irresponsible for getting your partner killed through your stupidity.
-
I enjoy this show also. I find Rachel Nichols character to be very interesting. I wouldn't expect the AICN audience to be it's target, and there are always more haters on this site. I see this show being doomed, simply because it's on Fox. There are so many directions to go with this show, and it seems that Minear has a storyline planned out. I just hope we get to see it.
