NYC Licensing Show! Marvel With SPIDER-MAN 3, GHOST RIDER, NEMESIS: RISE OF THE IMPERFECTS, and More!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Marvel’s got to have one of the busiest libraries around in terms of licensing right now, and they turned out this year with a number of images.
First up, a little SPIDER-MAN 3 teaser:
Then there’s some game of theirs called MARVEL NEMESIS: RISE OF THE IMPERFECTS:
We’ve seen GHOST RIDER news popping up all over the place this afternoon, and it is one of the more exciting images from the show overall:

There’s also this logo which we’ve seen before:
As well as the X3 teaser image released last week:
There’s a lot of stuff in development that Marvel didn’t bring to the licensing show this year, which surprises me, but I’m sure they’ll roll out some other titles as soon as they’re ready.
Thanks again, Pitdoc.
"Moriarty" out.

2007!! i can't wait that long!

was a promo for 2. lame. why not come up with something new? how about something with sand to confirm the whole sandman rumor, or even some kind of venom-esque bit if that's the route raimi's going. the ghost rider image is sweet, albeit blurry. having cage onboard should ensure some success on that, but if F4 does indeed suck ...marvel needs to be more careful with their most precious properties as dc is the wolf at door just waiting to steal the show with a great bats flick and the big blue (albeit gay looking) boy scout waiting in the wings.

-sigh- Just let ME design Sue's uniform...so far this and the movie were not up to my expectations. Also, does anyone else think that "Ghost Rider" was based on that one Halloween decoration, the flaming skull that has eyeballs? That thing has become a damn standard... -
that's a MUCH better shot of the johnny blaze standee. gotta say...that looks pretty phucking tight. would be SO great if they can pull off a solid 'ghost rider' flick.
-
That's incredibly blocky looking graphics. I fear the project as it is what with having to buy a bunch of comics to start off with and then a game to find out what happens in the end, it's being trumpeted as yet another story that'll change the Marvel Universe and for once I'm actually dissapointed Bendis isn't involved. If he was, I'd be guaranteed the game will last me two years as i sit and watch three hour FMV movies of idle superhero banter. *sigh*
-
that was ok while it lasted *sigh*
-
Well, the flaming skull is cool 'n' all, but for fuck's sake. People on this site had the temerity to say that SUPERMAN'S suit looks gay...

Wolverine is definitely front and center with advertising, AGAIN. With the script reviewed here it felt almost as if he was in the very back seat for the movie. Here's to high hopes on a fixed script.
-
...where the heck is the scoop on Spidey 3 already? And that poster blew, I thought we'd get a teaser of the villain or something...jeez. Still, here's hoping its the Gibbon, with the power of a monkey and the power to suck, the Gibbon is fear incarnate. Also, Andi Peters as the new Blade in Blade 4 anyone? Andy Crane as Captain America?
-
He looks freaking awesome. Too bad he's gonna tranform into a rug-wearing has been doing a pitiful Elvis imitation.
-
but I am familiar with the story. I'm cautiously optimistic for this one. Just picturing the flaming hell cycle driving on some dusty desert road on a moonless night is a pretty fucking cool visual.

..Hello, anyone..
-
Why is he still working? Any why oh why does he have to star in a movie based on one of my all-time favorite comic book characters?? I would have rather he been Superman than Ghost Rider! Nick Cage is the Spirit Of Vengeance??? That's like casting Ben Stiller as Thor!! Nick may be a great guy, I dunno, but I hate that man's acting so much I refuse to see any movie with him in it because all I can think about during the whole movie is, "Man, I hate Nicholas Cage." But, damnit, I LOVE Ghost Rider.
-
Great! It only gets worse! Now I find out the writer and director of DAREDEVIL (the only comic book based movie worse than Dolph Lungren's Punisher) is writing and directing Ghost Rider. Now, I have another reason to dread this movie.

Except they changed the 2 to a 3 and changed the date and removed the Doc Ock reflection in the eye. Maybe the poster is telling us that the villain is Sandman because the reflection in Spidey's eye is a wall of sand. Yeah, that's the ticket.

by devil'sown
Wow. I'm posting my opinions about a movie that isn't even out yet. Ain't the internet nifty? Eh... these are strange times we live in. Marvel needs to pull itself out of the tailspin it's in. Nicholas Cage is an actor who's work I've enjoyed, but he's just about the last person I would have imagined getting cast as Johnny Blaze. I was all for Johnny Depp. And while I don't hate Daredevil as much as most everyone else does, I'm really not all that encouraged by the film's director. Right now it seems like the best we can hope for is an actual good storyline with covincing villains and some high energy action scenes. While I was never a big Ghost Rider fan, it would be nice if they could mine some respectable movies out of lesser-known, but deserving characters. Fellow recovering Marvel Zombies, do you feel my pain? How long must we suffer? The Fantastic Four is coming at last (too little, too late, I feel), and it feels "iffy". Were X-Men and Spider-Man just flukes, some underdogs we felt comfortable cheering for (don't even mention Blade, because it WAS a fluke that a film about an obscure anti-hero made that damn much cash and spawned two sequels)? I've said this before, but maybe it bears repeating; If they can't even do a righteous adaptation of a guy who was just a fucking vigilante, how are they gonna make exciting, involving spectacles about "out there" characters like the Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange, or the Silver Surfer? Hey, put 'em all together with the Hulk, we could have a ragin' Defenders movie!! Yeah, right. If they can't keep it together long enough to deliver on the promise of the first two X-Movies, this ain't happenin'.
-
Ghost Rider looks silly as hell.
-
At this point, I'm like every other Joe Fanboy asking, "Duuude, is Venom gonna be in the movie or not?!"
-
That's sand reflected in his spider-eyes. Least, that would be my guess and hope. Would love a sandman movie. Venom....eh, whatever. never liked him.
But isn't raimi quoted as saying he wasn't a big venom fan either? maybe that's where the casting of topher grace is going? In the comics, eddie brock had a lot of bad luck just like peter(pre-venom...leading to his spidey hatred). but for an anti-spidey, venom/brock was this big muscle guy....unlike parker. maybe raimi is going to try and make venom the REAL anti-spiderman. Cast Topher Grace as Eddie Brock and him the same bad-luck normal guy like peter....except when Brock gets his venom/spidey powers...he goes to the dark side rather than that of great responsiblity. Which would work for a much better plot than, me alien suit, me hate spidey, me eat brain, me drool.
yeah, i think that would work nicely. now where's my million dollar movie check? -
I'm still puzzled why Avi thought developing Ghost Rider into a movie was a good idea. I just don't think there are that many people out there who think of Ghost Rider as some type of iconic superhero. Expect a big flop boys and girls.
-
What exactly would you have Ghost Rider look like? He looks EXACTLY like he does in the comics. I really want to know why you think he looks "silly". I personally think he looks bad ass. I've read that Nick Cage is taking the character VERY seriously (he has a freakin' Ghost Rider tattoo!!) and the movie's got a pretty damn good cast besides him. Plus the hellcycle looks damn cool. I agree with Darth Busey, the visuals alone will make me want to see this movie.
-
It's blurred, but it's a sand storm and something else....? No Venom nonsense Thank God!!!!

go to the above link and read about all the horrible things avi arad has planned for marvel. its mindnumbing. he likens the NAMOR movie to jurassic park. WTF?! -
I'm glad Ghost Rider has that nifty belt to keep up his crazy leather demon pants. Cause while he might be a leather-clad flaming skeleton with a whip chain, he needs a belt just like the rest of us.
-
Yeah, I read about Arad's plans for more Marvel properties. Typical Avi. [sigh] Throw it against the wall and see what sticks. As a form of solace I offer the following: Imagine Nic Cage breaking into a cold sweat. He keels over and screams in agony as his head erupts in fire, and the flesh melts from his face! C'mon. You know you want it.
-
Well, my mom did tell me I was the coolest kid in school.
-
... are they making a Ghost Rider movie in the first place? The character was only popular for a brief period in the early nineties when comic books were at their worst. Writers and artists were throwing out every hackneyed idea they could get their hands on in a lame-brained attempt to be "edgy" or "dark". No character introduced by Marvel between the years 1991 - 1996 should ever even be CONSIDERED in a movie. They all blow. That means for the X-Men: no Cable, no Gambit, no Jubilee, no Stryfe, no revamped Psylocke. For Spidey: no Venom. And in general: no revamped Ghost Rider. If you must make one, make it the original Johnny Blaze on the old Harley-style Hellbike.
-
...the character was "popular" in the 70s first. And I totally agree, virtually all the characters from the 90s are basically interchangeable and forgettable.
-
The only good shit that kept Marvel afloat in the 90s was Peter David's Intellectual Hulk and Larry Hama's sublime run on Wolverine. Apparently Gambit still has a following, but good riddance to Cable and the Dan Ketch Ghost Rider.
-
... was pretty cool, but the number of people still around who remember it are few and far between anymore. I guess at least the 90's version kept the memory alive if nothing else. Now if we can get them to get a "Shade: the Changing Man" movie off the ground, I'll be totally stoked! Well, actually... more bewildered than stoked...
-
... when was yer collecting hey-day? Sounds like it was about the same as mine: late 70's thru 80's. I quit in utter dispair in '95 over the crap stories, lame characters and rising prices and have just started pickin' up some DC stuff in the last 4 months. Forgot how much I missed 'em. I can't even read my old ones anymore since my entire collection got horked by a former room-mate whom I considered to be a friend. If you're ever in Northern Alberta and run into a guy named Dave Matheson, kick him in the nuts for me...
-
Even though it's just artwork, you can't go wrong with a flaming skull. And The Daredevil's D.C. was pretty fucking good if you watch it. Thank God Fox isn't making G.R.!!!
-
I thought Johnny Blaze was the main character in this Ghost Rider movie?
-
... the character is named Johnny Blaze for the flick, but he and the Hellcycle are designed after the more recent Danny Ketch '90's model. Johnny Blaze pretty much in name only.
-
I would like to see Cage's face melt off, but since this is going to be a PG-13 movie they probably won't show it.
-
... the Hellbike actually does look more like the original from the 70's. The costume, however, does not.
-
Seriously, it looks different from the Ock eyeball, it looks blurrier, like there is no reflection, maybe there is a giant wall of sand in front of him? Eh? This would make sense, if only there were a clearer image
-
Consider his nuts kicked. Ya, you got me pegged. I beheld the glory that was Conan the Barbarian, Tomb of Dracula, Howard the Duck, Cerebus, Claremont and Byrne's X-Men, Wolfman and Perez's New Teen Titans, and Grimjack. Then ofcourse, I stood aghast at the horror that was the "grim 'n gritty/hot young West Coast artists revolution". They condemed the major publishers for being too profit-oriented, then went on to become cash-grubbing whores. I don't mean to make fun of the afflicted here, but this "vanguard" included one 'o yer countrymen, and a California golden boy. {A-hem!} And like you said, stuff like X-Force, Darkhawk, Sleepwalker, Youngblood (hell, anything by the Prince of Grotesquely-Exagerrated Anatomy), vitually all Image comics, especially SPAWN!! That stuff was candy-coated shit only a twelve-year-old could love. Might be pretty to look at, but not terribly good, either. Cheesy gimmicks, absurdly high cover prices, meaningless stories, cookie-cutter art, cheap stunts pulled to "shock" the reading public to get buzz started (and bring Joe Sixpack into the comic store), and weak, weak characters. Enough was enough, man. And when the studios did fall ass-backwards into a couple of comic book movies that were actually successful and it raised the public's awareness of the hobby (which is a mixed blessing), enthusiasts came forward to voice their beliefs, perpetrating the stereotype of fans as "geeks", and all these self-important celebs came out of the woodwork to "justify" the pasttime... It was a turnoff, y'know? It made any self-respecting sentient being almost ashamed to be a comic lover. Sorry 'bout the tirade. I too have taken an interest in some DC stuff of late, much to my wife's satisfaction. They seem to be hot on the trail of what brought many of us to the hobby in the first place. Other than that, I hate to sound cheap, but nowadays, I figure if a storyline is really worthwhile, I'll pick up the trade paperback.
-
Although in hindsight, she really was kind of a Dazzler knock-off. And if they made a good "Howard the Duck" movie I would be so thankful. Seriously. To close, I read Avi's interview with MTV and I actually rather liked it. Sure he started speaking producer with all that "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and "Jurassic Park" mumbo-jumbo, and sure I now know that Galactus is going to be something like a ball of energy instead of a humanoid, which sucks, but it left me a little less nihilistic-feeling about the future of Marvel than I had been in lieu of FF and X3. Plus, he actually said that 'Hulk' took a lot of shit for all the wrong reasons, which endeared me to him. Agree or disagree, turns out the man has some integrity after all.
-
Since they really haven't started filming it. I'm not fully sure they even have a script. So this basically identical looking poster from SP2 does not surprise me. Rumor is they guy who played Conners in SP2 for like two minutes has been hired again. I'd put my money on Sandman and Electro in 3 and Lizard and somebody else maybe Vulture (Larry David) in 4.

Just something to keep in mind in reference to the villain in Sp
by ribbons
Anyone subscribe to EW? Thomas Haden Church said his character in 'Spider-Man 3' is "a horse of many colors." I have, because I have way too much free time on my hands, thought on this. There are a handful of possibilities. Wanna hear 'em. Course ya don't. Onwards I plow. 1) Now I assume this "horse of many colors" thing is an expression, but I don't know what it means. Maybe some knowledge of that would shed some light on the clue that I'm not getting. 2). It's a completely bullshit line in an attempt to throw people like me off the scent. 3). He's playing the Chameleon. This seems unlikely because there'd been so much speculation geared towards Sandman, and the Q-Man himself said they were doing effects tests with sand (and in that MTV interview, Sandman was one of the characters that Marvel provided MTV.com with a photo of. But chameleons, obviously, are known to the layman (i.e. me) for being able to change colors, and it seems to me that saying one "changes colors" would be good shorthand for being of many personalities or appearances anyway.
-
Eh, the leather pants may have been a bit much. The flaming skull looks cool in any case. As for the movie, well, it probably won't be all that great, but who knows? I actually caught the director's cut of 'Daredevil' and while it still has problems, believe me when I say it's much, much better than what Fox unleashed upon the general public in 2003. So maybe this will be good. Unfortunately it's gonna be another "soundtrack" movie. Avi should take a look at all of his most artistically successful properties and realize that they're all scored. Fuck tie-ins.
-
...seriously, it's 4am here and I just got off work, but your posts put a smile on my face. I get so few opportunities anymore to talk to comic fans from my period. Dev, just the list you threw brought back memories... I'll catch you guys in the mornin' (or later).

"Devil's Ribs An' Ribbons" All comics, all the time... but with a rich sense of the history and a great nostalgic bent... admit it, that sounds fun as hell don't it?
-
... that second to last bit made me sound like an old-fart, didn't it?
-
It's just that... when she started appearing in X-Men, she sorta became Wolvie's sidekick. I know the guy was in a fix, but the first time there's no Kitty Pryde around, he bonds with some other spunky teenage girl. It was a sobering moment. A good Howard the Duck movie would be groovy. True Believers need some good news, so I hope your feeling is right and things look up. Ribs, that sounds like a blast! We're not old farts. We're old school! Get some sleep. At our age, we need it.

... that I don't collect regularly anymore. Because I feel left out of some discussions. Ever try the Yahoo thing? Blah. They talk about everything but comics. And unless the @$$holes review a graphic novel, I usually feel it's irrelevant for me to post there.

... I did try the Yahoo thing and got flamed for dissin' Rob Liefield and Jim Lee's old character work. At that point I knew I was surrounded by children.
-
Sorry t'hear about that. Makes glad I didn't go to any great efforts to communicate with those twits.

... next time there's any new news on Spidey 2, head fer Yahoo and just type in "Venom Sucks". Then just sit back and listen to the heads explode... makes 'em crazy... he.

I just love how this "culture" wants to dismiss just about anything, but they will go berzerk over a dissenting opinion about one of their icons.

... going on right now in the War of the Worlds talkback. Woe betide the man who liketh not the works of the great Spielbergo. (Not me, some other guy. And man, is he gettin' raked over the coals...)

Let's go cook the piss outta his ass right now! Just kidding. Talk to ya in a bit.
-
I know what I like and what I don't like and Nicholas Cage's acting falls in the latter category. I'm well aware of his Academy award - he may have even deserved it. I didn't say everybody should hate him, just that I do. Just because I won't watch his movies doesn't mean they shouldn't be made - unlike some other talkbackers, I don't feel that Hollywood exists just for ME. If you love Cage, I may not understand why, but it's whatever lights your fire, dude.
-
You're obviously not alone. For a "star," Nic Cage is pretty hit or miss at the box office. Personally, I like him. That might be a little colored by the fact that my real sort of introduction to him was 'Raising Arizona' (...well, after 'The Family Man'), which forgives a multitude of missteps on his part as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what to think of 'Ghost Rider' really. I don't think that he'd specifically make a good Johnny Blaze but, like I said, I do think he's a pretty decent actor, which you may or may not agree with and which I'm not sure I can trust myself on anyway. He was pretty hellbent on starring in a comic book movie to get it out of his system; I guess it's probably better he star in this one than something else if that's the case. It's a little risky anyway; like I said, Nic Cage doesn't necessarily equal gold and this movie probably costs a pretty penny. And I actually kind of wish they'd gotten somebody else to direct, but it is what it is now. I don't think it'll be craptacular; actually, I'd be surprised. But I'd also be surprised if it was an unqualified success, both critically, financially, and within the geek community. We'll see.
-
Whadda think of my idea for a comic chat forum with you, me, Devil'sOwn and Chile Rolande? The AICN A$$holes are fine, but no one ever talks over there...
-
I'd be down for it.
-
The answer is right there in the Spider-Man 3 teaser poster and ya guys ain't even noticed it! Thomas Hayden Church will be playing Chameleon. And a little birdie told me his brother Kraven has a cameo also (smile),
with the current rumor being Kraven and Green Goblin 2 will be in the fourth film.
