New FANTASTIC FOUR trailer hits and it sucks the least out of all of them!

Published at:  Jun 15, 2005 11:32:46 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a look at the third FANTASTIC FOUR trailer. I haven't been shy about expressing my disappointment at what I've seen so far. That's not to say I hope this movie fails, just that I expect it to. I'd love for nothing more than to see this flick work and while the new trailer doesn't quite give me that hope, I'm less cynical about the project than I was. Call me a geek, but seeing Sue Storm deflect a ray gun blast with an invisible bubble and seeing Doom hit with a Human Torch fireball both made me smile. But because of the changes to the character of Doom and some of the casting (coughcoughalbacough) I really don't think this movie can be what it should have been... However we may, at least, get some classic FF imagry to make it an enjoyable experience. Maybe, maybe not... Here's hoping!

Seriously, Alba rules. You can accept her in that piece of fucking rotting and stinking shit known as Sin City. Yet as the Invisible Woman, you cant? Illogical bullshit like this makes me utterly despise geeks and never want to be cast in with this accursed lot. And dont go bringing up "then why are you posting here if you are not a geek" bollocks. I love film, and appreciate it. The FILM should come before the GEEK when refering to this site. Even if all the people running it fulfill the appearance, height, and weight requirements. Stop bashing a film before you see it. Have some fucking faith and stop letting your EXPECTATIONS lead you around.

    by teddanson37

i recently saw (in part) the old FF movie (the one that never made it to theaters) and i couldn't watch that crap. this looks like it will actually be worth watching. of course what do i know...i'm one of the seven or eight people out there who really enjoyed dare devil. i was a huge comics fan as a kid but i never got into the fantastic four (spent most of my time with batman, spidey, and the X-titles). i am kinda familiar with them due to crossovers...but not dr. doom. i don't really understand what is different between the film version of doom and the comics. (except for the whole ruler of a made-up country thing that just wouldn't work in any serious movie)

    by funmazer

...as in very, very overrated by the press, geeks and reviewers, but likely not by the general public. Yet, still, [BB] is not even nearly as good as those 2 films, so, yeah... Tell Chris Nolan to back the camera up about 5-7 feet whilst shooting fight scenes and maybe I'd change my mind. And get a decent score and don't rush the ending.

Has anyone else noticed that they show little to nothing of Reed doing his super-power thing? This is what scare's me about the movie. Aside from a few arm stretches that look so-so and one quick body stretch, they havn't shown anything. Are they keeping this as their ace in the hole to shock and amaze everyone, or is there really nothing to see?

seeing how everyone pretty much thinks this one is gonna stink Schumacher style. And while the trailer was slightly better, I knew it. I just knew it. three quarters of the way through I actually thought I was going to make it through the whole trailer without them showing cars twisting in midair, or those dumbass fratboy pickup lines the human torch does. I almost made it too, until the final 3 seconds, and they just HAD to squeeze in the twisting cars and dumbass Fratboy pickup lines. 3 seconds to go and they squeezed it in. Almost made it. Damn.

One of the space missions to fix the Hubble telescope some years back had one astronaut aged 37 (the youngest) and the rest were more than 40 years old. You see where I'm going with this? This lot all look far too young to have been astronauts. Oh yes, if you go into space and get bombarded with sufficient radiation, you'd probably die in space or die later from cancer or whatever instead of getting cool surprisingly useful superpowers (as opposed to the more likely non-specific and useless mutations) ... so how far do we want to go with this accuracy thing? ...

    They can't be serious

    by mr.klaw

I had great hopes for this project. Chilkis as the Thing? Great! Alba as Sue Storm? Well, ok...it can work. A lot of other folk? Well, it worked for X-Men!

And then I saw the first trailer. And the one after that. And the new one. What a gloriosity of suckitude.

Thing doesn't even growl "It's clobberin time" for shit. If it's a money issue, couldn't they've gotten Tom Waits or even Stone Cold Steve Austin to redo just that line?

I won't talk about Reed and Sue and Johnny. From what I see in the trailiers, Reed's barely plausible, Sue is Jessica Alba, and Johnny is a smartass..ok, they were bound to get one thing right.

But Doom sucks like...well, nothing I know of. Episode I, maybe. I'm no purist. I could ALMOST forgive putting him on the shuttle. But when I saw that paper-mache armor trying to look menacing, my first thought was that the Corman Doom looked better. Which, if you've seen the film, he did. I'm not saying that the Corman flick was good, but at least they tried to not fuck with 40 years of memories.

unlike this. Honestly, i'm more psyched for this movie than Batman Begins, although a friend of mine has seen it, and he says its ridiculously good. The Human Torch looks fucking amazing in this. They pretty much sold me on that. Chris Evans looks like he nailed it down perfectly. I'm loving the Invisible Woman effects so far. i was afraid that Alba would mess up but so far, i keep seeing goodness. Yeah... Mr. Fantastic looks kinda mediocre so far. they haven't shown shit of what he can do. and The Thing... well... that truck crashing into him is shot perfectly, but i wonder if they'll show him doing any other cool stuff. All in all, this looks like what a comic book movie should be. It is fun, doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, does not seem to be full of crappy melodrama and pseudo-dark fanboy cravings. Hopefully it will be good.

    by halfmadjesus

I suspect FF is going to play pretty well to Joe Average Moviegoer and his kids - maybe not as well to Geek Nation. Really, the only issue I've had all along is Doom on the space station and Doom getting "armor powers" along with the rest of the group. Do I see how this set-up streamlines the narrative and makes the ultimate conflict more personal? Yes, I do. But I also see how it cornholes one of the most complex bad guys in comics, one of the greatest characters in ANY media, and turns him into a simple villain. In my humble opinion, Doom is the most interesting character of the whole bunch. You don't alter him to fit more efficiently into the FF's world - if anything, it's the other way around. Translated as accurately from the comics as humanly possible, Doom would leave an impression on a generation of moviegoers much like Darth Vader did back in the day. What's the old saying? "A hero is only as good as his/her level of opposition?" In the FF's case, this is very, very true. I plan on seeing FF anyway, but I also plan on having it put me in a tooth-grinding rage over this very issue. Even if they nail all the other characters spot-on, a wishy-washy, half-accurate version of Dr. Doom will be the piss in the punch.

well, it looks no worse than the first x-men film.

    by cloudrider`

honestly. the first trailer and posters for the first x-men didnt excite me. at all. the costumes i thought, and still think, are poorly designed. and yet, since it was directed by geeks' darling, singer, you geeks seemed to turn a blind eye to those factors. nothing it seemed can dampen your anticipation. it's to be the greatest film, the comeback of superhero films, and you're gonna love it no matter what. and now, look at harry... it's obvious to me he has a vendetta against FF. "oh, the poster is bad, they should have done it my way." "that barbershop guy is stupid, he should set the film in the 60's, like I envisioned it." "oh, the lighting in this picture of ben in a bar is WRONG WRONG WRONG(it's a PROMO photo, no less; i remember you guys thought the promo pic of saruman in his tower looks like something out of batman & robin)." then of course, harry has to back up his distaste for the movie by posting a negative review of the FF book adaptation, and no doubt if he could post negative reviews of the film now, he would do it. i mean, why? it's not like you KNOW what constitues a good film! hellboy was praised to high heaven here, and it was a mediocre piece of shit. blade 2 and daredevil made you cum, and those were, again, mediocre pieces of shit. you love x-men, and i thought it was also mediocre at best(i love my x-men2 though). so, i guess what i am saying is dont let harry influence you on what is gonna be good or bad. for all i care, FF might be this year's batman & robin, but at least make up your own damn mind until you see it. i'm just sick of harry's biased and lame ass attempt to crucify or overhyped a film based on his personal feeling.

My point exactly ... if we want to attack the film because it's not like the comic origin, where are we going to stop then with our complaints? Mind you, if it turns out to have a shonky script, well yes, it may totally blow chunks and it is fair to complain about changes if they're all for the worse (see Ring Two, The vs Ringu 2 vs Rasen (movie) vs Rasen (book) - Progressive trend downwards of). Also, it's a general thing with a lot of movies in space, even the real-world ones, a lot of people just look far too young to be astronauts.

    by ribbons

It's basically the same as far as I know except the funding for the space voyage did not come from Doom and, natch, he was not on the ship. The part people seem to be getting their knickers in a twist about is that in the comics, Dr. Doom is a despotic leader of a third-world country, an old rival of Reed Richards who blew his face off in college and who returned to his home, stopping along the way for a little education in the dark arts and a nifty green tunic. Because his ego is apparently *that* monstrous he seems to be more concerned with the Fantastic Four than, y'know, world affairs, and he has time and again tried to destroy Reed and woo his wife Susan with little to no success. Along the way subtextual comments are made about the triumph of scientific exploration and family over the individual ego and Big Brother dictatorships. I think.

    Alba

    by mojo-wan

First of all, I don't think this movie was a good idea. Second of all, as beautiful as Sin City was, it was mediocre as a movie. Third of all, Jessica Alba has the most massive hotness-to-talent ratio of any actress outside of porn. And if she won't even get nude playing a stripper, what good is she as a hottie OR an actress? By the way, I blame Rodriguez for allowing freaking NANCY to be a prude. He's gonna do frame by frame recreation of a super artsy comic, but draws the line there? That's kinda like doing a "brutally accurate" account of Jesus' last days and then casting a white guy.

    by stan the bat

It's such a petty, pointless thing to do, first off; and it's so utterly unimpressive besides- shit, *I* could do that. Sure, the guy would probably get up and kick my ass; but there's nothing about Von Doom in that scene that makes me think the doctor couldn't get up and kick HIS ass. Stuff like that worries me about this movie.

    Reply to Talkback

    Stop Bitching!

    by tile_mcgillus

1.)Complain about the fight scenes in Batman Begins? The actual fighting is meant to be visceral and disorienting. You aren't supposed to see batman land a punch. It is meant to up the mystique and lace each shot with intimidation and confusion. This was not done in the hack knee'd approach of a lot of unskilled directors. There is a concept and a context to the methodology of this technique in this film.
2.)Dr. Doom? Doom can't be the magically powered metal suit wearing genius dictator from a European Country. You can't make that work in movieland. I am the first one to complain about respect for the source material but in this instance it could not be done. By allocating Doom to the ship and having his powers manifesting themselves similtaneously you have a cohesive plot. I personally would have had his face deform itself and he develop the metal suit but I understand the decision. It gives a point of reference for the character traits that manifest themselves in the people.

P.S. Haven't slept in too long so sentence structure is FUBARed.

You know, that's a dumb objection. Sorry, and no personal offense intended, but it is. You can make anything work in "movieland". Anything at all. Audiences are DYING to see something they haven't seen before, to be asked to suspend disbelief for something really outrageous, to see a risky proposition turned into something just plain fun to watch. Nobody gives a good god damn where Doom got his powers or if he's magic or if he's the evil twin brother of Santa Claus. The premise of the movie is silly anyway. If you dumb it down out of chickenheartedness, the result will be dull. If you have faith in the source material and make it a hell of a lot of fun, no questions will be asked.

"but McMahon pulls it off surprisingly well"- I just didn't think it was worth pulling off. Doom is supposed to be hatching world-domination plots, not beating up interns. I just thought it set him up on too small a scale. Then, too, in the comic Doom is faceless, which gives the mask a mysterious feel. Once you've seen the actor's face for a while, I'm worried that the mask is just going to look stiff and obstructive. Same for the thing- I like Chiklis, but I'm concerned that the nuances of his performance may not make it out from underneath the four-inch thickness of chunky peanut butter. I like the guy they got doing the Human Torch best after Chiklis- I know, he's saddled with a lot of dumb one-liners; but there's a certain amount of that in the comic too, so... Reed isn't old enough or authoritative enough- he doesn't look like a brilliant inventor; he looks like a goddam prettyboy. And I'd never have picked Jessica Alba for this. Her face just strikes me as all wrong for Sue Storm- which is subjective, I know.

Why does AICN have it in for FF?

    by mrcere

This film looks OH-KAY. It isn't the best trailer or the worst and AICN's writers are treating it like the boom mike is hanging in half the shots. Balderdash! It may well be horrible, and the Doom thing is iritating, but they are making mountains of bad news out of mole hills. Alba is great, but not for this movie. I failed to use "donkey balls" in any context here and for that I apologize.

...just because I don't like the FF. It's just my opinion and has nothing to do with the quality of the filmmaking. I just think the FF are lame. Don't like 'em, never been interested in 'em, that's all. For the sake of FF fans, I hope this movie is everything they hope for, but I'd be more interested in a Flash movie.

    by cryptosporex

Anyone recall these pre release bitches from the past. Spiderman..they are not going to have Peter Parker invent his web fluid and web shooters. Spiderman is going to suck. X-men....they are not going to have the team run around in thier bright yellow spandex. Who the hell is Hugh Jackman, It should have been Dougray Scott. X-Men is going to suck. The truth is that "magically powered metal suit wearing genius dictator Doom" would have translated to the screen as bad as yellow spandex or a high school kid
inventing a substance Dow Corning would never be able to invent. It's been said thousands of times and some people still don't get it.
Things that work in comic books do not always work on the big screen or fit in a two hour movie. Most of those that bitched about Spiderman and X-men, after they saw them, consider them to be among the best superhero movies made. This trailer is the best so far and makes me think this movie will work.

Since you've dropped by to repeat what's been said thousands of times, I assume you've got a lot of time on your hands. Given that, maybe you could take a moment of it to explain again- for the benefit of those of us who 'just don't get it'- why the idea of "a high school kid inventing a substance Dow Corning would never be able to invent" is ridiculous and 'wouldn't work' in a movie- but the idea of a high school kid who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and wakes up the next morning to find that he has super-strength and can walk up walls is perfectly sensible and acceptable.

Doesn't Invisble ladie's blast after "No lets" seem rather weak? Doom just stumbles back a tad like he's been told something mildly surprising. And that new Torch following shot is a huge rip off of Spiderman 2 as it followed Parker through the back of the truck.

Hello? Mr Fantastic? Hello? Everyone said it should be him and you cast some welsh guy whose biggest claim to fame was a one minute part in Titanic. And as for the rest of the casting in this (aside from Thing) - it's just awful. Never heard of the guy who plays Human Torch and I never dreamed in a billion years that underneath his mask Dr Doom would look like that idiot from Nip/Tuck. Sweet lord.

    by lex romero

Yeah there's some dodgy lines in it (the "so are you" line wasn't that bad at first, until you've heard it 20 times in the trailer when at the cinema) and there's a distinct lack fo Mr. Fantastic Stretching in it which has me worried it doesn't actually work well in the movie, but overall the film looks to have some fun set pieces and the cast fit the roles quite well.

As for Doom I agree that it works better for him to have been on the space station as well, but why not have the cosmic rays disfigure his face as well? Then he actually has a reason to put the mask on rather than just because "he's a bad guy now so needs to look evil". Love the music in the second half of the trailer though.

Also you can't say you didn't feel a tingle of excitement when the human torch jumped off the side of the building. "don't even think about it!" "Never do" - the best lines in the trailer.

  • This is from a non-fan of FF ao I probably don't "get it", but this is the demo that this film has to appeal to, for better or worse. X-Men managed to have characters with wacky powers while still maintaining a level of dignity. These characters are just stupid. A guy made of rock, a stretchy guy, an invisible bitch, WTF? The human torch looks pretty cool, I'll give it that but overall, the whole thing looks like it's leaning towards Sharkboy and Lava Girl territory. I know this is heresy to fans of the comic but if you objectively look at it, it looks quite lame.

    by kenkrk

"In the UFF comics, Mr Fantastic is much younger so I guess Fox could be keeping it in line with that"

How do you figure? In the original comic, Reed was in his 30s (Ioan's 31 I believe), Sue was 25(Alba's 24), Ben was roughly the same age as Reed (Chiklis is 41) and Johnny was a teenager!(Evans is 23). If anything, two of the characters are actually OLDER than they should be!

And to the people clamoring for George Clooney, one gans practically stoned him for his Batman, and two, fans seem to always bitch when big name stars are cast in comic book movies. So why would you yearn for a big name actor who's blamed for butchering one of the best comic book characters ever?!?! My whole issue is the hypocrisy of some fans:

*"They should cast unknown (or lesser-known) actors!" Fantastic Four's got 'em. MacMahon's role on Charmer had a lot in common with Doom in his actions, motivations, and the fact that he used that precious magic you seem to think completes Doom. His role on Nip/Tuck shows the vain, charismatic elements of Doom. As for Chiklis, "blue collar" is practically stamped on his forehead! Chiklis has exhibited many of the qualities to be found in The Thing. Street tough, a sense of loyalty to his friends, naturally blue-eyed, and most importantly, Chiklis is a die-hard fan! Hearing him speak about his love for the character is something I thought would please comic fans!

*"The costumes should be spandex!" They are. Aside from looking a bit futuristic, the basics are there: blue bodysuit with black collar, black gloves, black boots. Shrink and shift the "4" to the side, and there you go. What's the problem?

*"CGI Hulk sucked!" So they've got Chiklis toughing it out in a suit. And for what it's worth, I think they did a fine job with it. But since it's not absolutely perfect, you're all crying for CGI? C'mon. Chiklis is going all out so you can feel for this character on screen, instead of trying to feel for something that was created on computer after the fact.

Bottom line: I'm looking forward to the film and hoping it's good. Aside for little in the way of footage for Reed stretching, I love the effects I've seen for the other characters. When there was speculation that Johnny wouldn't completely flame on, I was happy to see the effects team go all out to show the Human Torch as he was meant to be shown. A lot of the visuals just seem pitch perfect with the comic if you really look at some of the scenes and compare them to Kirby's old comic panels.

Besides, I saw the trailer last night on Batman Begins and one thing got me more excited about this movie than most, the camera follows Johnny while he flies though the city. I can only hope Singer thinks of this for Superman so I can scream "Finally, they did it the way I've been wanting to see it!!!" because that's exactly what I said when I saw that footage.

This is a comic book movie, I've seen nothing from the trailers, behind the scenes, or any other media bit that has shown me that the spirit of the comic is captured. This is simply a movie called Fantastic Four, in name only. If that is the best "humor" in the film, we have serious prblems. That is just bad writing. "that's gross", "You're hot", why thank you." That is embarrassingly bad. Everytime I see Chicklis as The Thing, I realize he looks worse and worse. The Thing looked much better in Corman's film.

Why Spidey's Webbing Had to Be Organic

    by ktak

This has been argued to death, but here's my take on why they had to "dumb-down" Peter Parker for the movies. And I admit it's something that's bothered me about Spider-man's webshooters since I was a little kid. Let's say we all accept that Peter Parker really is brilliant enough to cook up the webbing formula and web-shooters in his basement. The question then becomes how does a guy with that much creative scientific ability (whose best friend's father is the the head of a high-tech conglomerate) manage to be broke all the time? Are we supposed to believe that his webbing was the only valuable idea that could come out of his head? I started reading Spiderman in the 60's when an issue cost 15 cents. Back then, the compact remote control system he used to take his own pictures for the Daily Bugle alone would have made him a rich man. Raimi wisely decided to play down Peter's scientific ability so that he could take advantage of the dramatic opportunities that have always come with Peter struggling to make ends meet. If you try to have it both ways, it creates a logical disconnect that would be really hard for the average audience member to ignore.

    As much as the changes...

    by childe roland

...to Doom's character leave a bad taste in my mouth, everything I've seen of McMahon in the role is pretty encouraging (as someone pointed out above, testament to him as an actor more than the way the character appears to have been written). All of these people complaining that Sue Storm is too young an cute are clearly people who only read the comics in the late 80s and early 90s. When the team was introduced - like they are being in this movie - Sue was a college-aged girl, barely older than her teen-aged brother. Reed was significantly older than her (having roomed with her parents as an undergrad) and Ben was Reed's age. So her age is perfect. And with the blonde hair, Alba looks very much like flashback images of young Sue as depicted in more recent (90s) comics. And those same barely-post-pubescent complainers are griping about the Thing looking too lumpy and not massive and rocky enough. Again, I say check out the team's initial appearance and the way the Thing was drawn by Kirby. Chiklis looks exactly like those drawings. So get a clue, kids, and save your complaints until you've actually seen the movie or at least talked to somebody who has and who knows a little bit about the history of the characters. Right now, with the exception of Doom, I'd say this thing looks on track to be a pretty respectful film tribute to Marvel's first family of heroes.

    "Dumbed Down"

    by johnnyh

"Dumbed Down" comic books? Look, you have to TRANSLATE a comic book into a film! You cannot just throw the comic on film but interpret it first. The reason they got rid of Peter Parker's web shooters is merely one of time. Why explain how he came up with the shooters if a biologic explanation does it in 3 seconds? Is it really that important? A lot of comics have long histories that would take many, many hours to sum up in a film and still be interesting. So they update things or just change them. Fantastic Four looks fun, and is different from the comic for 2 main reasons: 1) The comic is not one of Marvel's "premiere" titles, like Spidey or X-Men, and so doesn't have the built in interest that those titles have, and 2) It needs a HUGE update from the comic to bring it into today's world; i.e. The bad guy is no longer a ruler of a country, the Invisible Woman is a pretty young starlet, etc. This is not going to pull in an audience like Batman or Spider-Man, so they made a fun popcorn movie that looks enjoyable to me. Oh, and for those of you who will site Sin City as a "great" translation, the movie had a great visual style but the stories sucked. I've never read the comic but reading how "true" it was to the original makes me realize that it may have been TOO faithful.

Why don't you assclowns--especially the AICN "management team" who forever take shots at the trailers--lay off? Yes, they made changes--so what? So did Spider-Man, X-Men, etc. Yes, the Thing is in a suit, NOT CGI--your point? You bitched about the Hulk being a complete CGI character. I swear, I miss the days when AICN actually broke stories and had spies feeding us cool pieces of information about upcoming movies. Now, it's becoming a fucking "criticize the trailer" site, with Harry and his cronies ripping apart a two-hour movie over a two-minute trailer. Here's a thought: wait for the movie before you tear it apart. And remember this, Harry, McWeenie, et al: what goes around comes around. If/when your pet projects ever see the light of day, you'd best pray that some other site--CHUD, Dark Horizons, Coming Soon--doesn't create a groundswell of negativity over your trailer.

I actually liked the organic webshooters- I could never stand the idea that one of SM's main powers were based on a little doodad that he wore. All the comic ever got out of that were lame little 'ran out of web-fluid' moments. My earlier point about it was the the idea that you have to make a superhero more plausible somehow is ridiculous- you're either willing to suspend disbelief for this stuff or you're not.

I guess making sub-par movies doesn't matter as long as they make a few bucks along the way. I don't even know if I'm going to see this one, because I know I'm going to be disappointed...

    by kid z

... is Doom being horribly deformed by the cosmic rays. In interviews, Jack Kirby stated that Doom wasn't disfigured at all... that he only had a small scar on his face. However, he was so egotistical and narcissistic, he thought even that minor flaw was a disfigurement. His problem was mental, not physical and that made for a much more interesting character IMHO.

  • It wasn't until the early 70's that comics went up to 15 cents, then a quarter, then 30 cents. Of course, today a comic takes a second mortagage.

News flash to the rest of fandom. No one is making these comic book movies specifically for you!! There aren't enough of you out there to justify spending 100M + on a movie. The fact of the matter is a movie like this needs a huge audience to be worth doing at all. If changing some of the story is what it takes then that is what will be done. If only the FF hardcore fans went to see this movie the movie would barely break 10 mill so shut up already about the movie not being faithful. If the dialogue sucks then we have an entirely different matter on our hands (this I fear will be FF's downfall). Batman (as good as I personally think it is because I am a fan of the character) is so faithful to the comics that I could see it ultimately hurting the box office. It is a very dark story and I would be really surprised if most kids get any of the pseudo-psychological villainy implied in Batman (because let's face it the real villain in BB is a concept - fear). This could effectively kill repeat viewings especially for kids and teens. Warners better hope that either kids think that Batman by himself and his car are cool enough to make them want to see BB again or that adults just love it that much as to go themselves to repeated viewings. You have to think outside of just yourself and your needs when making these movies. Look at Daredevil - made by geeks with slavish attention to story detail result: a huge bomb. Sometimes just doing it 100% right isn't what sells tickets. Face it summer movies are a business. Us geeks want all the costly special effects and sets but refuse to admit that obtaining that will require in most cases a certain dumbing down for the masses that don't read the comics. I fell strange for in some ways defending hte studios because at times I do think that they are too focused on marketing first and story second but the facts of the matter is to those not familiar with the story or characters and that's aboyt 90% of society the marketing is what they see and what will ultimately determine the fate of the movie. These are just the facts.

Let's turn the world's greatest comic magazine into a movie--and here's the twist--Let's make it totally awful! A miniscule budget and a miniscule Thing that looks like a 5 foot tall silly-putty turd. The only decent part is that Jessica Alba is robohot. Not gonna go see it. I'll just read my comics, thanks.

    Have we been spoiled?

    by masterwhedon

I'm watching this trailer and enjoying it for what it is--not getting nearly as excited as I was for the X-Men or Spider-Man films--and I started to wonder if we've been spoiled by a handful of really good (if not great) superhero films. Imagine if this film had been released before X-Men. I highly doubt this generally negative buzz would exist. In fact, I bet we'd all be clamoring at the bit to be first in line when this came out. Fact is, we've gotten it pretty good, now it's time we want better.

    by matthooper8

I think the film will still suck, but the trailer could have worked more. If they are trying to get fans and non fans, why not stress the fan stuff as well as the crap they show. They had J.S. say "flame on" but he is by far the weakest performer I have seen yet, and that is saying a lot because Alba cannot act. There are facts even the defenders of the film have to face. Alba and the dude playing Storm cannot act. Doom if done the way it seems they are doing it is so far from the real character it is just stupid. The character has been around since the early 60's. He has remained popular, why change it to such a degree? It is not logical. Chiclis may hold the key to this film being any good at all.
By the way, someone said to go back and read the comics, because they had bad dialogue. Guess what, written comics don't sound bad in your head. You read it the way you want it said. Comic dialogue is short and to the point. Bad dialogue in films is not subjective. it just sounds bad.

    by the_closet_nerd

Wow, give it a rest people. The film doesn't look all that bad. The changes to the Doom character may be okay. Sure, it's not the original Doom, but it may work. There are variations in the story lines in most comic books, so why not in a film version of a comic book. If you are going to trash it, at least trash the movie based upon seeing it, not a couple of two minute trailers. And for those of you who say that ANYTHING from the Corman film is better, I recommend a thorough eye exam or brain scan (preferably both) because you have some serious problems. From the acting to the effects, it was terrible. Chiklis' Thing looks 100 times better than the Corman one, there is no comparison. At least I think it does, as I was too busy pissing my pants laughing every time Thing showed up in Corman's to get a good look.

    Dr. Doom's true origin

    by boomstick81

His true origin is that his face was not disfigured. The only thing that resulted form the accident was a small cut around his forehead / temple area. He then forged a mask, but put it on when it was still hot (yeah, Doom is smart) and in doing so horribly burned his face. That's how his face got all disfigured. From what I've seen form the movie, Doom has scar in the same place as in the comic.....

Chris Evans, or "that guy who plays the guy on fire," doesn't seem that bad. I don't think he's going to be winning any awards any time soon, but I haven't seen any footage from 'Fantastic Four' to give me any reason to be mad at whoever cast him. If anything, I think it was good casting. He gets saddled with a lot of wisecracks. Unfortunately, some of them work, some don't, but the ones that don't seem like they would tank even if Daniel Day-Lewis read them. The only casting decision I can't really figure out is Ioan Gruffudd as Mr. Fantastic.

Yeah, I was pissed when I first learned about the cast, script and story(no pun I like what he did with Barbershop)But have changed my tune after closly following the production, reading the shooting script which by the way is alot different than the one that got dissed here a few months back. There were also major 3rd act re-shoots so no one really knows what's going to happen in the end. I think the most jackassed diss I've read here so far was a few months back when some fuckface said it was going to look like it was shot in Vancouver. Well, based off of those ICONIC shots of Johnny flying through Time Square I'm going to have to say "suck it" one more time to the haters . . .
Regardless of the era the FF have allways come-off as somewhat lite and fun, they arnt the X-Men and they arnt Batman. This movie at least looks like it's captured the fun and imagination that is the FF.

...a lot of the dialogue is horrendous, and you guys who are looking forward to the movie are not going to make me feel bad for saying that. I don't care if the comic books were full of bad puns as well, that just means I wouldn't have liked the dialogue in them if I had bothered to read them. And the thing that makes the dialogue uniquely bad is that a lot of it is completely nonsensical ("I can't," "Oh, you're hot," "Is that a trick question?"). For a movie that's been cooking so long that some people might call it overcooked, being too lazy to find genuine humor in the story and instead trying to shove sitcom-esque punchlines down our throats is ridiculous.

I'll bite. Honestly, 'Punisher' is probably technically a worse film. The cinematography is certainly nowhere near as pretty as it was in 'Daredevil,' the foils were more slapstick-y than low key, and there were a couple of really, really bad decisions that strained credibility (Howard Saint owning all of Tampa for one, Frank Castle walking up to the chief of police or whoever it was, Howard Saint basically killing his entire family just because they didn't talk to one another like actual human beings, and the list goes on), but I think I enjoyed 'Punisher' more because I could relate to it more. It definitely made Frank Castle out to be a troubled man and there are no easy resolutions at the end like there were with 'Daredevil.' We're not sure he's doing the right thing, and neither is he, but the drive to avenge his family is all he's got to keep him going. It's like me wondering why I keep coming to TalkBack every day, except instead of coming to TalkBack, he kills people. 'Daredevil' was a better movie for what it was, I guess, although I have a lot of problems with that one too, and I guess it sort of deals with the same subject matter. Actually, now that I think about it, 'Daredevil' is pretty much about the same thing. I don't know, they were both pretty crappy, but they were also interesting movies. I guess I'm gonna have to call it a draw.

Stan the Bat-No offense taken. I understand your problems with the changes. I personally believe that the talkbackers have been too critical. Face it. Certain things in movieland don't work or go against the narrative (like your aforementioned webshooters and also the X-men costumes). The Doom backstory is too convoluted and a tad ridiculous to work in this fun popcorn flick. You infer that you either take all the ridiculousness and suspend belief or you don't. Bullshit. That's why we movie geeks nitpick the minuteia. That's why I can love Spiderman 2 even though Dr. Octopus is completly different than the comic counterpart. It works well on film and this Doom might as well. To me, as long as the changes make the story more cohesive and due so with respect to the source material then its fine. After all Fantastic four has always been about family and Doom is a part of it twisted little soap opera. Doom could still rule a country in a sequel.

Why this film will be a hit

    by el_barstardo

I think people (especially outside of geek nation) will end up liking this film because it is a good foil to the other superhero flicks that have come out recently (especially batman begins.) Hulk, Dare Devil , Blade, Punisher, BB, X-men and even Spidey 2 to a big extent were all 'tortured' or 'dark' takes on being a superhero. This looks like it doesn't have that element, but rather is going back to the 'being a superhero is fun!' concept like the orignal superman movies. Because we havn't seen this in a while, I think it will serve as a refreshing change of pace from the dark films of late, and will make it a hit, especially with kids.

I was being a reactive asshole in my earlier post. That was sarcasim in regards to her heritage. My understanding is that she's made-up of about a 100 or so different nationalities, so I guess that's about as exotic as you can get. She's hot whatever she is . . . and she does strip totally naked in the Fantastic Four movie, albeit while she's invisible :(

Reminds me of a bit of stand-up by Kevin Brennan where he said it's almost impossible for people with exotic heritages to be ugly, even if their parents are ("It's like multiplying negative numbers"). Some people might take offense to that, and it's certainly not my intent, nor do I have enough world experience to say whether or not such a phenomenon exists, but I thought it was interesting when I heard it, so maybe somebody'll get something out of it.

    Well Lockjaw...

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt in regards to your ignorance of the posters here. A benefit you have squandered by revealing that in your 5 year perusal of this site you have failed to garner which posters are known for making statements founded through formidable logic and which ones are not. This is either the result of apathy or incomprehension. But, as I am an avid lover of talkback wars, and you are now free to "mingle" with the natives, I suppose I should consider this handicap a good thing...for me at least. I look forward to your future cheerleading exploits.

  • Doom a New Yorker without the scars, the castle, wealth and having super-powers and use it for evil becomes just a power-mad villain to me. With "other people with powers but with good hearts trying to stop the bad one with powers".

    Three guesses.

    by cookylamoo

Guess One: The reason Reed doesn't show up much in the trailer is because Doom captures him and holds him prisoner. He'll do his butt kicking in the finale. Guess two: The Thing, instead of being the team comedian will be played for pathos. The Torch will get all the good lines. Guess three: This will be not less good than Daredevil. (See WOTW thread)

Yuh, well seeing Captain America JUMP UP THROUGH THE FUCKIN' SIDEWALK in that stupid Capital One commercial was totally wicked awesome as well... too bad for Fox it takes more than quick shots of superheroes doing cool stuff to make a movie worthwhile. At least the Capital One ad has the Silver Surfer... this stinker sure ain't gonna start a franchise for Him to appear on the big screen in!

    Looking damn good

    by hiredhelp

Loved the new trailer and loved the behind the scenes footage even more. If anyone is still finding fault with that I have no idea how the hell they can sit through any movie and enjoy it.
Also no surprise that kick-ass footage hasn't had a mention at all from the editorial boys here aint it?

    Bitchin'.

    by devil'sown

As in "cool", not as in "complaining." I hope this movie is as fun as it's trailer promises it will be. After an exhausting period of time stressing over the fate of X3, I'm looking forward to seeing this, where my expectations are more realistic (while I love the FF, they aren't quite the obsession other properties are for me). I'm not gonna be one 'o those sick degenerates that disses something based on some friggin' clips. I guess I shouldn't be amazed at the fickleness of people. Seems like not long ago, everybody was predicting disaster for this film; now thankfully some folks are coming around. Sure, we have our issues with the way it's turned out. I resent the fact that Doom, one of my most favorite characters of all time, the one who revolutionized the concept of the arch-villain, is being depicted as a quipping yuppie. Shouldn't he be saying, "FOOLS!!" and "BAH!" ? I can only hope that the characters are developed well. That is one thing that will ultimately save this flick.
