Buscemi-Era SOPRANOS 5.X!! Every Single OUTER LIMITS!!Herc

Published at:  Jun 07, 2005 1:17:51 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

From Ain’t It Cool’s April interview with “Veronica Mars” mastermind Rob Thomas:

.... AICN: Leaving aside for the moment the many filmed
entertainments on which you yourself have labored,
what do you believe to be the finest hourlong series
ever crafted for American television?

....
THOMAS: The show I most adore would be The Office, but you've limited me to American series. I'd put Mr. Show on the short list. The Sopranos. Freaks and Geeks. If the Simpsons would've called it quits after season five, it would be there for me. Oh, wait. I can't read. You said hour-long. Uh...then I'll stick with Freaks and Geeks and The Sopranos.

.... AICN: Did you see the last "Sopranos" season with Steve
Buscemi? Do you feel the show gets better as it goes
along? Or do you feel it peaked with Nancy Marchand?

....
THOMAS: I don't think it's lost steam. I think some fans who show up for mob hits might have lost some enthusiasm, but Tony's journey is every bit as complex and interesting as it was in the first season -- for me.

10 reasons to revisit the fifth – and I’m willing to declare the best – season of “The Sopranos”:

1) An enfeebled Junior’s return to the “old neighborhood.”

2) Feech La Manna’s plasma screens, and his take on modern grooming.

3) Carm’s paranoid romance with Anthony Jr.’s guidance counselor.

4) Christofuh’s reaction to the news that Ade might have been boning Tony.

5) Christofuh having to collect from the fellow rehab vet played by Tim Daly.

6) The panic Meadow’s boyfriend endures when Tony’s homosexual soldier invites him to a ballgame.

7) The New York Cold War pitting Little Carmine against Johnny Sack.

8) Big Pussy Bonepensiero, Richie Aprile, Ralphie Cifaretto, Gloria Trillo, Vin Makazian and Annette Bening (!) all turning up in one of Tony’s dreams.

9) Adriana’s FBI-snitch story-arc finally coming to an extraordinary, Emmy-winning close.

10) The amazing Steve Buscemi as Tony’s doomed cousin Tony Blundetto.

Guess what? You can now own every episode of ABC’s amazing if short-lived “Twilight Zone” knockoff, “The Outer Limits,” for less than $77. All 32 season-one episodes. All 17 season-two episodes. (Bear in mind very single "Star Trek" will run you about $2,800.)

You know in your heart you want to own these. The first season features “The Chameleon.” It stars Robert Duvall and was written by Robert Towne, likely the finest screenwriter alive.

The second season features two – count ‘em, two - teleplays written by the great Harlan Ellison, who went on to write the best episode of “Star Trek” ever. One episode, “Soldier,” is responsible for Ellison’s name appearing on every DVD of “The Terminator” ever manufactured. Another second-season episode is titled “Wolf 359,” which carries its own resonance for “Star Trek” fans.

    by bobby 2 tacos

The "I, Robot" episode from "The Outer Limits" was adapted by a short story of the same name by Eando Binder.

So these are re-issues? Does the packaging look familiar? Are they priced less expensively?

    Ouch ...

    by shan

With our exchange rate in Australia and my having no money ... What did everyone think of the new Outer Limits - it had a good run for a sci-fi show and a compilation at that (6.5-7 seasons) and they did get some very high profile actors to appear in many episodes.

To be fair to Trek's "$2,800"...

    by htown

There are about 14 times as many Trek episodes as Outer Limits episodes. And It's more like 2500 bucks unless you somehow get a retailer that doesn't discount the MSRP AT ALL.

Anyone else excited about this? I remember I liked this a lot as a kid (Clancy Brown, Tim Curry, etc.). Also, when the hell are they releasing Space: Above and Beyond. Another show I remember liking but have no idea if it holds up or not.

Rumor has it this will be released before the end of next year. The one I want is Brisco County, Jr. though. What the hell does it take to get a Bruce Campbell show on DVD? Hell, where's Anchor Bay on this and Jack of All Trades?

Herc, what's the obsession with hourlongs?

    by dijonase24

I'm not going on the attack here. I'm just curious. You come out with your list of the ten best hourlongs every season. You asked Thomas for some of his favorite hourlongs. What's your beef with 30-minute programs? In my book Arrested Devleopment would be at the top of a list of best television shows on the air today, but by your criteria it wouldn't even be mentioned. Ditto for Scrubs, which would also make my list. Are 30-minute programs that inferior? Do you watch 30-minute programs, or do you just concern yourself with hourlongs? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Eando Binder

    by zundian

Eando Binder was a pen name for brothers Earl and Otto Binder (E and O, get it?) To really confuse things, Earl and Otto's "I, Robot" was later reprinted in an Asimov edited anthology of classic science fiction.

Only the first season of THE SOPRANOS was brilliant...

    by -guyinthebackrow

The second season was good, but lost a lot of steam. The third season sucked. The last season was okay, but no way near DEADWOOD or the first season. The last season of SIX FEET UNDER was outright bad, while seasons one and two were excellent. OZ was never very good. ENTOURAGE is kinda fun, but let's face it no one would watch it if it was more than a half hour. And Herc, you are crazy if you think that last season of SOPRANOS was the best. Crazy, I say!

    by tbrosz

Herc, I don't know what the deal is. The boxes look the same. I got the first series a long time ago, and it was many months after that before the second season came out. Don't remember the exact dates, but you can gather from the reviews on Amazon that these DVDs came out quite a while before this month.
