Wanna see Smilin' Jack Nicholson from the set of Scorsese's DEPARTED the remake of INFERNAL AFFAIRS!
Hey folks, Harry here with a cool bit of a spy report from the set of Martin Scorsese's THE DEPARTED... which sounds like a great title for either a Western or a late 40's Arkham House Mystery-Suspense flick. However, instead of either of those, it is the remake of the fantastic Hong Kong flick INFERNAL AFFAIRS. Now Scorsese hasn't done a lot of remakes - last one was CAPE FEAR - which to me kinda felt like the blending of the original CAPE FEAR and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and made for the sheer bloody fun of it all.
I'm very curious to see what Scorsese and William Monahan have turned out with the script. The original film is one of the best 'spy vs spy' flick I believe I've ever seen. And is incredibly different from Scorsese's previous dips into the pool of crimelords and feds. He's put together an amazing cast (as usual) but what I'm absolutely most intrigued by is the casting of Jack Nicholson in the role of crime boss. I mean this is the first time that Jack & Marty have hooked up on a film... and frankly it's a great part. Sure in the original, the roles that Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are playing were the showboat roles... but man... Nicholson in the hands of Scorsese is just thrilling to contemplate. And due to this spy - we get our first look at that character... I'm not including the shots of bar from the outside cuz frankly... it ain't much to look at. But here ya go...

Hi!
Attached are some photos from the Departed set (The US version of
Infernal Affairs with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack
Nicholson and directed by Martin Scorsese). The photos are outdoor
shots of the fictitious "Irish Haven" bar.
The movie's supposed to take place in Boston, but it was actually at
58th Street and 4th Ave in Brooklyn (in a predominantly Latino, not
Irish area). I took these photos yesterday. Unfortunately, all filming
was indoors and the windows of the "Irish Haven" were all boarded up.
Actors didn't linger around outside. Filming continues through 5/24/05
at this location.
Went back to the shooting location in Brooklyn. Here's a shot I took
of Jack Nicholson, dressed as mob boss Costello for the movie "The
Departed".
This is the US remake of "Infernal Affairs", so he plays the mob boss
character that is equivalent of Sam (played by Eric Tsang).
If you use this, please credit it to Crazy Charlie.

anyway...scorsese will make a great crime movie.yay!p.s. the original is amazing.
-
where's the blonde mop!!??
-
the original was class, intricate and involving - but Matt Damon is a bit of a worry. here's hoping Scorsese doesn't fuck it up GONY? Casino - both were just a bit limp with a few stand out scenes. The Aviator was excellent though. I get nervous when a 'big' name is attached to a 'big' director as I always expect something as hammy as Pacino in Heat
-
I guess the title change is understandable, but I like the original better; it's more distinctive. "Departed" sounds like just another weak horror movie.
-
the balls to use a tie like that in a movie... and I'm talking about Scorsese.
-
have you seen CASINO lately? It's one of the best films of the 90's. GoodFellas expanded to an epic scale.
-
Yup, the original has class out it's ass (and, in saying that, I prove I have none whatsoever). The Damon might just have the skills to pull it off. And Jack will be great as long as he doesn't get all shoulder-grabbing "you are my number one guy" on it. More badass Schmidt than crazy ass Joker, please. And while I'm whinging - that fucking title has got to go. The original had all these crazy affairs in it. Affairs that were infernal. What will this one have? Something already gone?
-
Casino is good - great at times, but compared to Goodfella's it just doesn't hold up. It lacks momentum, it lacks cohesion, it just basically lacks! It's more like Scorsese decided to make a TV series rather then a movie, almost as though he wasn't sure what to make next so he went through the motions of what he had done before. Good, but certainly not great
-
...but where coud a fella go about getting a tie like that? It's, uh, for a friend.
-
I like it, but Sharon Stone's downward spiral I could care less about. Gimmie more Pesci sticking ppl's heads in a vise.

Matt Da-a-a-a-a-a-mon.

First of all, you're talking about "Americanizing" a movie. Seco

Of COURSE the crime lord's gonna get the juicy part.

And I've yet to see 'Infernal Affairs' (though I plan on getting around to it sooner or later), mainly because I'm lazy, but if you wanna go with "unwashed" douche, I won't stop ya.

Scorsese truly is one of the best ever, and I'll trust his judgment over mine any day of the week, but I don't understand why he loves DiCaprio so much. He's been in three Scorsese flicks in a row! Does anybody else like him as much as Scorsese does?
-
Scorsese is just not the same director he was in the 70's and 80's. The guy made one of the most perfect films ever in Last Temptation of Christ, and has had a lot of stand outs, but he has not made a good film since Cape Fear, and that was a long time ago. I don't know why he does not use DeNiro anymore, I wonder if they had a falling out. In any event, his movies have been terrible for over a decade now, starting with Casino, through Kundun, and especially Bringing Out The Dead, which was positively one of the worst films ever made. GONY had Daniel Day Lewis, and nothing more. Aviator could have been done by anyone, it did not have Scorsese's touch to it at all. His problem is this new fascination with Leo DiCaprio, a once talented actor who has let fame go to his head and no longer acts. Oh well, who the fuck cares, plenty of new directors to look to, but the old guard is done. Spielberg, Scorsese, Francis Ford, Stone---they all suck now, and have no clue what is going on. I don't know how these guys just forget how to tell awesome stories. Oh well...

Infernal Affairs 1, 2 and 3 - are a triumph of acting and screenwriting over pitifully low production values. The most accomplished, well rounded, movie trilogy I
-
But not filmed here! I love when they do that. Oh well, maybe they just won't try for Boston accents since they aren't here. Cuz those accents in Blown Away were just fucking awful. But really... New York as a stand-in for Boston? Come on.
-
Nothing to go mad about or anything, I think Scorsese will end up with a more entertaining and ultimately rewatchable commercial product than the original. He'll use this Box Office to justify getting his next dream project off the ground which we will all wait for with optimism only for it to end up being Unentertaining, boring crap (see The Aviator or Gangs of New York)

I know how these "correct ideas" catch like wild fire, but the worst anyone can accuse Matt Damon of being is a milquetoast.

The title was changed from 'Infernal Affairs' to 'The Departed'

Also, 'The Departed' is a perfectly adequate title for catching lazy Academy voters off guard. See also: 'The Accused.'

The script is....loose. But BUT, they are smacking the shit out of it to get the movie done right. IMO it will be better than the original.
-
How do you know this, O Wise Kakihara?
-
i see all these talks about dicaprio, damon, and nicholson, but in the movie, the chief of police was just as important as the other 3. the movie was pretty much about them 4. i checked on imdb and it said mark wahlberg, but that doesnt sound right. it's gotta be someone much older. if you gonna get jack to play the gang boss, at least get someone of equal talent to play the police chief. ah well, if only he can get pacino or deniro or something. oh well.
-
It ain't easy be'n cheesy.
-
he had the bloat on him there for a while

Boy, I must've really missed something. Is this the same guy who wrote the novel "Light House"? Because that is fucking hysterical. Chapter 19 is worth the price of the whole thing. "...human beings need a certain amount of drama. Therefore problems are made up. Let me tell you something about this century...It's no accident that Freud emerged with the rise of leisure...He wasn't acutally commenting on the discontents of civilization. He was marketing new forms of discontent to the civilized."
-
Rhett Butler, I wouldn't jump to conclusions about it being a copy. Apparently, they're integrating some aspects of the Whitey Bulger story, so the Boston connection seems to play an essential role.
Fawst, they'll be shooting Boston exteriors over the summer for approximately 6 weeks.
Chum, the police chief and nemesis of Nicholson's character will be played by Peter Mullan. -
Scorsese made some amazing, beautiful movies: "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull." But "Casino" is a piece of shit and "Good Fellas" is the second most overrated movie I think of, second only to "Pulp Fiction."
