SWEEPS: DAY 26!!EVERWOOD & MEDIUMSeason Finales Tonight!!

Published at:  May 23, 2005 3:15:23 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Dark, shameful secret time. “Everwood” has somehow evolved from a show I tolerated to, at least for the moment, one of my favorite ongoing series.

Not sure when it happened. Could have been at the start of the current, third season, with the arrival of Hannah, the sad, bespectacled, lovelorn girl with the sick dad back home. Could have begun with the crop of installments that began with Ephram’s visit to New York.

But suddenly we’re not seeing as much of Andy Brown’s cranky old comic-relief nurse. Suddenly Harold Abbott is more than the envious dumbshit across the street. The show has gone, rather improbably, from hackery to something approaching genius. “Everwood” moves and involves me now. I must have laughed aloud six or seven times at the last episode alone. (I don’t believe I laughed twice during the show’s first two seasons!)

Was a new showrunner put in place this year? Were the show’s old, bad writers so preoccupied with the horrible “Jack & Bobby” this season? (Yes, I’m looking at you, Greg “Dawson’s Creek” Berlanti.) If so, the WB needs to keep the new showrunner aboard and happy at all costs. And if the WB doesn’t, one of the other networks needs to give this showrunner a series all his or her own.

Tonight brings “Everwood’s” finale, and I actually find myself wondering what I want to see first - it, or the final hour of the “24” finale.

What a turnaround!!

_____________

The Monday finale that presents no scheduling issues for me is “Medium.” The biggest thing I don’t like about Glen Gordon Caron’s compelling and generally agreeable smash is its lack of episode-to-episode continuity. Hopefully NBC, inspired by the “Law & Order” franchise’s declining numbers, will allow the show to start building longer and more complex stories when it returns next season.

Tonight’s season finale employs at least a bit of continuity, as psychic mom Allison DuBois is once again called upon by Capt. Kenneth Push (Arliss Howard), the Texas Ranger who learned in the pilot episode that Allison has powers and abilities not often found among mortal men.

“Everwood”: 9 p.m. Monday. The WB.

“Medium”: 10 p.m. Monday. NBC.

Herc, the real question is, if the show was so bad, why did you keep watching it?

    That's no excuse...

    by donliq

... in fact, that is why so much other crap is perpetuated on television--people say "there was nothing else on." Take a stand! If a show sucks, don't watch it! Now I blame you, Herc, for all the bad shows on TV! PS - thanks for turing me on to Gilmore Girls! (I dispense blame easily, but I also give credit where it is due...)

  • Rita Mimoun runs the show Herc. She is responsible for most of the changes this season than Berlanti. Berlanti might be like head writer or something, but Rita runs the show. Glad you have gotten on board with the greatness Herc. Everwood just gets better and better but Ephram remains a fucking dick. Sarah Drew does rock the fucking house though.

    Medium is a guilty pleasure.

Have watched it from ep 1 and have quite enjoyed it. Not exactly genre breaking but is generally well done. The husband is a tad annoying but overall the relationships are sweet.

that chick in Everwood is REAL HOT. (you know the Ephram ex) I am forced to watch the show, and I generally dont like it though there are some funny parts. Bailey's no good on it either, he should go back to Party of Five or White Squall. also the husband on medium is the best part. the only good job patricia arquette has ever done was True Romance.

    You laughed?

    by dink88

The last episode was one of the saddest this season. The Abbots dealing with their mothers cancer, Ephram leaving for London and saying good bye to Deliah, Amy and Ephram missing their graduation, Ephram reading his moms letter, Andy turning down Mrs. Abbots request to perform the surgery... Where's the funny in that?

    Everwood Blows!

    by wilpower

The show used to be okay, but It is starting to make my stomach turn in the same way Smallville does now.
Ephram (or however you spell that damin kids name) is too whiny for words!WAAAAAAAA! (think Artie Lang on Stern). The show has become a giant cheese fest ? similar to how every episode of Smallville ends with that After-School-Special ending every episode where Clark's parents tell him how much they love him while a piano plays in the background. The only good thing about Everwood is Dr. HArold Abbott. That is a great Character. I wish a rockslide would take out every resident of Everwood except for Dr. Abbott ? who decides to open a practice in Stars Hollow. He would make a great regular on the WB's best show - Gilmore Girls. People who don't like that show have never watched it. Gilmore Girls has pop culture references to match Buffy and Family Guy. Great Show! Let's just say that for the most part that the WB sucks. Angel's best season was its last. They had to cancel it to make room for "hits" like The Mountain, Jack & Bobby and One Tree Hill. Guranteed this is Smallville's last season too. It has been moved to Thursdays. Why you ask? To get it cancelled of course. Survivor and Joey will blow it away and that is exactly what the WB wants! They want that show to wrap up before Superman Returns hits theaters. Don't want to confuse the great unwashed masses too much. Boy did I ever get off topic. Everwood has turned to cheese. Medium is okay - that couple spends way to much time in bed. Would have been better with Rebbecca Salad Stamos was the lead ? she would look better in all those bedroom scenes than pudgy Arquette!

    Everwood is Underrated

    by flem_snopes

Actually, I though they did a pretty damn good job of handling the whole Madison has a baby deal. That could have gone over the top real easily (or gone in the other direction like on the OC where there seemed to be minimal consequences for having a baby). Plus they've managed to keep reinventing the tension between Ephram and his father without it seeming like a re-tread. And they continued to up the ante at the same time. I think that stuff is all great. The relationship between Amy and Ephram...the same, keeps evolving...doesn't seem like a rehash. I don't know how long they can keep doing it, but its admirable.***The Scott Wolf character, however, has got to go. That whole storyline does not resonate with any kind of truthfulness.***And Bright is a good character. Dim without losing dimension. Herc's right. The season has improved.

Psychics are real, I am one and I KNEW You would say that!

    by snaieke

hehe... just kidding, I thought I was psychic once... I was watching TV and everything was happening just as I had seen it before, turns out it was a repeat.

    by big bad clone

Nothing on TV is real. Esp. the reality shows. Who tunes in to see something real on tv? We have real shit going on around us every fucking day. I want to be able to watch psychic werewolf cops and cranky vampire dctors catch criminals through science in dark labs seen through a color filer. Then see the criminals prosecuted by a zombie lawyer ADA and an attractive female ADA. The criminals can be defended by Denny Crane!

    Medium is Well Done

    by regenhund

    Heh...
I all seriousness I enjoy the hell out of the show. It's not perfect, however. Making every last blood relative she has also psychic was a huge mistake, IMO, but at least they haven't dwelt on it. And can we please get over get over the idea that every female on television has to be a supermodel? When I need be distracted from the abysmal acting and writing in a show by the lead female's fantastic tits, I'll just watch porn. I don't care if Alabama Whirley or Joan Gerardi is carrying a little junk in the trunk, because the shows are good enough that I don't need to jerk off to them to find them worthwhile. Come on, guys, if you're that desparate, go rent a date. Medium is a fun show that has managed to be creepy, sad, and funny all in the same hour. They've managed to have some continuity without being strangled by it, the characters are well written with plenty of sympathy, and the acting is always above par. About Everwood, I have no opinion.

I think Herc said he would tell us after Memorial Day

    by big jim

When is that? Was that the 23rd or is it the 30th? I think it was The OC but sometime during the season they decided not to kill Marissa. So at the time Herc heard the info it was accurate.

Wonder who the other cast member was, since they were supposed to both be featured in the opening credits. Well, I hope he tells us, and doesn't just pretend to never have said it since it's turned out to be wrong.

    Hmm? 24 or Everwood? JACKBAUERFUCKINGPOWERHOUR!!!

    by the heathen

Yet another show to choose from on Thursday night, probably the last on my list. Even though Alias and OC lost some impact, Everwood actually got progressively worse to me this season in due part to Ephram. He is the lamest by the book character on the show. He complains about something (i.e. not being with Amy) and when he has nothing to whine about he of course has to break up with her. He's too self involved, and not in the funny Bright Abbot kinda way. The finale was actually alright with Ephram out of the picture, Andy finally saying something to Nina, and Bright hooking up with Hanna. BUT, I wouldn't even think twice between 24 (which had an amazing finale) and Everwood (which I watch at 10.)

    Ephram

    by flem_snopes

Was definitely an interesting move on Everwood's part by not including one of the principals (Greg Smith) for the entire show. A good one, too.
