SWEEPS: DAY 25!!HBO's Second-SeasonDEADWOOD Finale!!

Published at:  May 22, 2005 4:37:11 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Is “Deadwood” dead?

No. HBO has already ordered a third season of “Deadwood”; it’s likely to turn up early next year.

What about “The Wire” and “Carnivale”?

“The Wire” is going into production and will be back next year too. “Carnivale” is cancelled, dead as “Arli$$.”

Does “Six Feet Under” reclaim the “Deadwood” slot in a week or two?

No. “Six Feet Under” is back for its final season June 6, but HBO has moved it to 9 p.m. Mondays; it’s no longer getting its first airings on Sunday nights.

What will replace “Deadwood”?

The second half of the Paul Newman miniseries “Empire Falls” is cablecast next Sunday. Taking over the “Deadwood” slot on June 5 are the second season of “Entourage” and Lisa Kudrow’s new pretend-reality series “The Comeback.”

And when “Entourage” folds up shop?

“Rome,” set in ancient Italy (and not to be confused with ABC’s “Empire,” which launches June 28), arrives in autumn.

What about “The Sopranos”?

The sixth and final season of “The Sopranos” is in production now; we’ll get to see it next spring. We’d long heard season six was to be a 10-episode affair, but during Wednesday’s “60 Minutes” profile of series mastermind David Chase, I think somebody mentioned 13 episodes.

What’s doing with “Deadwood” tonight?

We meet mining tycoon George Hearst, whose interest in the Deadwood camp has had everyone peeing their pants all season. And while Martha Bullock appears ready to flee Deadwood, Alma Garret appears prepared to marry the whore-happy prospector who has been overseeing her claim for her.

Take up valuable bandwidth with your predictions and reactions.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

It sucks Carnivale is gone but look for some incarnation of it to reappear somewhere in the future , its got to big a following now and had good ratings at the end so one way or another I think it will turn up again..anyway Deadwood rocks and the finale should be real good. I finally started to watch The Wire and after 5 episodes I am hooked..

I think Wanda Sykes from Curb Your Enthusiasm said they wrapped up the initial filming for season 5, so it'll probably roll around this fall or late summer.

what a great line. It took me forever to figure out they were speaking in a version of Shakespear-ese. Plus it was great to see Gordon Clapp doing a little bit work on the show. And why didn't the Doc talk tonight? Was there something contractual about the time he appears or what?

    Season 2 was disappointing.

    by screwdriver

Often times I found it a little tricky to follow, this show makes you listen carefully, which isn't necessarily a bad thing; However, incoherent and fancy conversations seemed, at least to me, to be out of place this season amongst the dirty scum that walk the thoroughfare each week. I enjoyed the heck out of season 1 and I wish there was more action involving Seth losing his temper. It still is one of the finest shows on TV right now though.

    Ellsworth was hardly "whore-happy"

    by burlivesleftnut

It was nice to see his character get elevated this season. And I am glad that fat dude is coming back next season, but I cannot for the life of me figure out where they are going with Stubbs and Calamity Jane. Surely they are not going to open a whore house together, but who knows. The only thing I hope we see more of next time is the contentiousness between Bullock and Swearingen, please.

    Gordon Clapp was ...

seen very briefly helping Alma getting into the coach and behind her as she pulls away, but he was credited. Perhaps he will be a new character next season. I wonder how they will bring back Garret Dillahunt, who killed Wild Bill last year and played Wolcott this year, I guess the producers really like his work.

    Ellsworth

    by miserableraingod

loves whores. No use denyin' it. But why do you all assume Herc says it as a negative? When I say, "Ellsworth loves whores," I'm not trying to put the guy down...I respect him for having his priorities straight. It is, after all, a victimless crime. "Fuck us all anyways for the bunch of limber-dicked cocksuckers we are" remains the greatest Deadwood quote, and I believe it was in the first episode of the show.

    what to look forward to

    by dwam0

I also love this seaons and always look at the show twice, once with closed captioning on so I can catch all the words. The language and dialogue was much better this season.

Will Elsworth tell Alma that Dan killed her husband?

How will Tolliver survive being "gutted" - the knife moving up and down and across - when there was no microsurgery back then?

Will Alma trade her gold claim for the hotel? Will she hold the murder of her husband over Swearingen's head to also gain control of the Gem?

If Tolliver dies, will Joanie lay claim to the Belle and leave her place behind?

Will the town ever get a jail?

Will the two black guys ever return to town and will they be killed if they do?

What was the deal with Yankton?

  • Apart from the Widow Garrett's wedding festivities in the thoroughfare (so she's no longer a window; I guess death-and-the-maiden has passed through the Bullock conduit into Martha as her cross to bear for next season), Bullock and Al danced a deal with the fella from Yankton, Francis Wolcott jangled at the end of a noose (awkward, great shot), Farnum did the diarrhea twist then did a giddy squirm with his money, Al's assassins donned those freaky masks like Wu's temporary marionettes, Tolliver twirled with the minister for a second time, Doc Cochran taught the fat guy some yoga then did a jig of his own. I absolutely agree with whoever mentioned Deadwood and Shakespeare in the same breath. It's one of the Greats.

    by chickychow

Only two very quick shots of the bastard swinging wildly, almost blink and you miss it. Great editing decision there, no need to linger on this coward - its a party!! Also loved Andy's revenge on Tolliver, the ambiguity going on within Alma as she's getting married (you see sadness, hesitation, but also certainly affection for Ellsworth), and the raid on Chinamen's Alley was terrific, as was the opening sequence there. Fuckin best show on television. (oh and great scene between Al and Hearst also)

    Next season's characters..

    by chickychow

Certainly Mose Manuel (Pruitt Taylor Vince) has officially been "brought into the fold." I wonder if Hearst will stick around? Or will he move on, perhaps popping up once and awhile. I think Capt. Turner, his burly right-hand, is going to be hovering over the proceedings at the mines and giving some shit. I hope Commissioner Jarry returns to be a prick and promptly gets a fuckin axe to the back, cuz I hate that cocksucker. Wonder what'll happen with Steve (the jerkoff on a horse guy), I have a feeling he might just leave camp for good...
