Tom & Dakota seem to be a pair of Cry-Babies in WAR OF THE WORLDS! What they crying 'bout' Warning - You'll see here!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know... this just doesn't look like the average Steven Spielberg film. On top of that - it doesn't look like the average Tom Cruise macho-mutha-movie. Tonight, I got an email from a super secret source (or so he claimed)... and it got me a bit excited - yeah yeah, I know, I've been a blathering idiot about this film... but the size perspective comparison between humans and the aliens and humans and the tripods... well it sent me a clicking over to WarOfTheWorlds.Com and I tried playing that damn Survival game, but I died like 10 times and quit out of frustration... Checked out the various desktops and photos... and in the photos - I found 3 images that I had missed and damn if I didn't find them evocative of the feeling in this film that I feel the sketch below gives the characters in the movie. Here, check em out...

See what I mean? I think this is going to be the film that those that were disappointed by SIGNS and INDEPENDENCE DAY wanted to get. And it's going to be a film that combines that intimacy, with that scale of what should be horror, not fun. Right?
The above WOTW sketches are not "production sketches" - but rather were done by Kermici Farid - a professional production designer and storyboard artist from France - (worked on CRIMSON RIVERS among others) and he did these after he saw the latest trailer to satiate and make more clear sense regarding what he saw in the trailer. He is not associated with Spielberg's film, but very talented regardless.

Oh yeah and first!!!

Is it just me or do thoes tripods look like Giegeresq eyeball/vagina hybrids...
-
I dunno about this movie. It's Spielberg, so it's gotta be at least somewhat good, right? All the trailers make it seem like the movie takes place in 3 locations.
-
...the intimacy of Signs with the grandeur of ID and none of the shit that accompanied both films. You just know Spielberg is not going to mess it up. I cannot wait to see this film.
-
Go fuck yourself!

And it does indeed look good and impressive. Spielberg is still Spielberg
-
I like the design of the alien actually being a tripod itself but the elongated back of head is getting a little tired. Alein, Predator, Pitch Black. Indepedence Day and others I can't think of right now. Trying to think of a genuinely original alien design and I can only think of the Fifth Element creatures at the start. Kind of mechanical hedgehogs. A Doctor Who alien with a budget.
-
Looking forward to this the most of all the Summer Big Dumbs but I can't get away from the the fact that it's Cruise. It's impossible for him to have that everyman quality that made Close Encounters the classic it was. Would have liked to see WOTW have that seventies sensibilities. The family in it were so natural. These days you can tell it's manufactured. Look at Cruise's clothes in this film. It reeks of a stylist trying to convey blue collar. Working class at Gap.
-
is another very original design of alien.

I got burned with A.I. but damn, I'm hyped for WAR OF THE WORLDS
by godoffireinhell
A.I. was, for me, one of the biggest disappointments ever. I did like MINORITY REPORT, though, even if it wasn't a great adaptation of the original Philip K. Dick short story. Spielberg has definitely come quite a long way since the wide-eyed, childish wonder of his early sci-fi movies (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, E.T.) and as someone who likes his science fiction dark and mature I couldn't be happier.
-
This looks like the film that Spielberg was born to make. It has all the elements that made his earlier films so special. Duel, The Sugarland Express, Jaws & Close Encounter had an edge of your seat sense of reality to them, which has been missing from most of his later movies. He should have never stopped making these kinds of movies.
-
Ok.. everyone tells me Signs was a horribly flawed movie... what was so friggin bad about it? You saying the aliens weren't scary? They were scary as hell to me... if it wasn't that, what the hell was it that was so bad about it?
-
Just like "A.I." Just like "Minority Report." Steven Spielberg is a terrific craftsman, but... does he have an original idea left? I don't think so. The casting reeks of "I need a box office hit so damn bad." Oh, and "Signs" sucked because of the idiotic religious overtones, the awful acting, the insipid script and the aliens were killed by water. Isn't that enough?
-
Thats like saying the new star wars movie wont dissappoint because it better then Pluto Nash, wait till you see all the parallels between te alien conquest and nazi germany, sure to be real deep, like college dorm room bong hit deep...
-
Nothing wrong with it... in my very own humble opinion. I was so drawn into the drama, that I simply forgot I was watching a movie whose main marketing tool was aliens invading earth.
So the water issue never bothered me. I was too busy caring about the characters, to care about a glass of water. M. Night still rules in my book. -
Is it me or do these flymode ships look just like ID4 ships ?
I,m looking forward to this movie , but i hope we see some original ideas soon ! -

Regardless of these sketches being fake or not they don't come from Mars. Anyone know where they invade from yet? Branch of human evolution developing secretly underground? Inter-dimensional? The future?

Check out a few posts before this. A French artist KERMCI (a very good one, I might add) created these after seeing the trailer. He posted his website and everything. He mentioned them on the previous Talkback. This seems like good publicity for him but bad publicity for Harry.

At first I was disappointed because these designs weren't very unique for them to be guarding them so closely. Then I was relieved, and then pissed, that this was posted as artwork from 'inside' the studio and turned out to be from someones personal portfolio. Then I was even more upset because it turned out this person was French! (ok just kidding on that last one.) This is a big let down...

First off, Doug Chiang and ILM are doing the concept work for this film and there's no way he/they would design something that so much resembles so many other movies (Independence Day, Flight of the Navigator, Alien etc. etc.) And how exactly would an amateur storyboading artist in FRANCE who has nothing to do with this film gotten a look at the concept drawings. Not likely. I'll say this, if these are what the final designs look like, Speilberg will have an extremely unimpressed audience on his hands.

Man you need to chill, i said everything about these designs in my previous posts. I never tried to make them pass for real ok?!
Also easy on the French bashing man (even if i don't care about it really) its really small. "OH no a french based artist can be right or near it that's impossible" Blah blah blah.Keep your hostility for you cause there is really no need for it here.
Last thing i am no amateur ok This my work, i do storyboards and concept designs for a living.
I made these drawings in 15 minutes just for fun.
Now if someone claims that they are near the truth good for him, i was just drawing and having fun about a movie i am expeting a lot. -
Just to let you know that several fx compagnies(buf for batman begins) and french directors that i work with are also working for some major american studios gothika's Kassovitz is the most well known (he was planning on shooting "i am a legend" for warner as a trilogy). We are not on an island isolated from you people we see some stuff before you do (i worked on the t3 videogame cinematics ans i saw all the movie by pics before it was released). Did you know that the director of Constantine was planning a cg movie, No? Well its being developped in france as we speak.
Just to fill you in about the whole movie relation about France and the US. -
Don't let some bad comments get you down. Most Americans I know respect French culture and its people, even if we have some disagreements on politics. Sounds like you have a great job that any one of these geeks on these talkbacks would kill for. In regard to the WOTW I hope we don't see any clear images of the tripods and the aliens. Some people want to open their Christmas presents early.

Minority Report was okay, but it wasn't anything that I would ever consider a favorite. The first thing I think of when people bring it up is the retarded computer interface. Next year it will be Lindsay Lohan, and no one will believe that, either. // I fail to see how Cruise's paycheck is a crime against humanity or the economy. How many millions of people will see this film worldwide? Do they each get $10 worth of entertainment out of it? You know, ten bucks. Less than 2 packs of cigarettes. Less then 5 gallons of gas. OK, now do the math. Who should get that money, if not Speilberg and Cruise?

-
Sorry, I guess I it seemed like I was trying to bash YOU personally, but I wasn't. I think you're work, from this concept drawing, is pretty awesomely rendered stuff. I just assumed you might have been an amateur because most of the time when you see fan art it -is- from an amateur, regardless of how good it is. Bad assumtion I suppose. Secondly the France bashing was intended as a joke, as I stated in my first post, trying to make fun of all the retarded France-bashing that goes on here in the states for no reason. The second post refers to France only to say that ILM probably wouldn't be sending any of it's work there. Once again, your work looks pretty sweet, don't take it personally. I was much more trying to make a point the posting it as inside studio work from ILM, not you who are clearly not to blame. My bad if it came off as an attack on you.
-
playing the "don't show the alien to build marketing hype" game can backfire in a big way. Even if it's cool, it'll be a let down if they keep hyping it. This plus the BS paring of cruise and holmes reeks of desperation and a multimillion dollar marketing machine. F U.
-
How convenient that someone would post about these sketches belong to FRENCHKERMIT or whatever, and then right after that on the tb, this FRENCHKERMIT fellow comes and claims them. I think they just are a couple of geeks trying to stir up the rest of us talkbackers. Having fun at our dispense. *btw I think ILM will most definately have the CG ready on time, because Episode 3 restored my faith in them. This movie will rock no matter what.
-
Wow, I have never been part of a conspiracy before. White Owl check the story that appeared yesterday about WOTW. Scroll through the TB and you will see that Kermici posted with the URL for sketches he drew. I was the only one who responded yesterday. I was very suprised to find them on this new story as authentic pictures. That's the extent of the conspiracy. Also, Oswald was the true assasin of JFK.

that sketch did indeed come from a talkbacker. It was in the previous WOTW trailer story from thursday. The guy's TB name is KERMICI. Here is his post: [ Aliens design fanarts
by KERMICI Hi, i have done some sketches of the aliens and their machines based on what we saw in the trailers. Tell me what do you think? http://www.ifrance.com/tylerart/wotwaliens.jpg?NOM=tylerart ] I don't know how you became aware of the sketch. I can only imagine the amount of info flowing in and out of the Aint-it-cool-news Ironworks. The trailer IS good. I seen it just a few minutes after midnight Wednesday amongst a plethora of Darth Vaders, Princess Leias, and various Jedis all waving lightsabres. Its been a long time since I've been that deep in geekdom. Later. -
This no conspiracy man, if you had followed anything you would have seen that these drawing were posted yesterday by KERMICI in the talkbacks of the last trailer:

and that he already said that it was his version of what he saw in the teasers that's all.

Man, the trailers do nothing to convey any emotion (Save Fanning's look of terror in the one close-up). But the biggest mistake is casting costars that are more talented than your main star. "Ok Tom, in this movie we need you to act cocky, scream, cry and...well, that's about it. We know you haven't done any real acting in years. Here's your wad of money. Boy! The Last Samurai really sucked! What the Hell were you thinking?" Really, how cool would this movie have been if they made it a period piece? How amazing would it have been if Spielberg hired classically trained British actors and set this movie in the England of 1898?!!!

First of all, "War of the Worlds" wasn't exactly a period piece when it was written. Therefore, to set it in 1898 London, therefore making it a period piece, would actually do a disservice to the intentions of H. G. Wells, which was to 1) deliver social commentary and 2) scare the bejeesus out of people (granted an impossible thing to do now) by making them believe that an alien invasion could actually occur. But I'm sure you've heard all that before. The other argument is that an alien invasion circa 1898 circa London would straight-up look cooler than one circa 2005 circa New York (Newark). Well, I'm inclined to agree with you there. Koepp spoke against the idea, saying that "that type of thing has been done too many times before." I'm not quite sure what he's talking about; in any case I'm pretty sure there have been more present-day alien invasions in small American suburbs (AND big American cities) than there have in historical English cities. Maybe not though. I do think that by updating the piece though, one at least pretends to care about reaching people the same way the source material did, so I'm cool with it (now an alien invasion set in a modern-day English suburb; THAT's something we've yet to see). A rote adaptation seems more like an empty spectacle if you ask me, or at least, even more pointless than the version we're getting in four weeks. Welcome to summer indeed.

This could become one of Spielberg's best in years and maybe of all time. More emotionally driven and tense than Revenge of the Sith? Possibly, but I am biased since Star Wars is one of the greatest things in the world. But, Sci-fi epics need to be recognized for their pure drama against the backdrop of a fantasy world that can only be seen through the eyes of both George and Steven. With that in mind, I am prepared to take that ride in the mini-van and escape a higher intelligence that has planned the attack for eons.
-
Hello, Spielberg is the king of smaltz. David Koepp writes brainless, bland films. And Cruise never makes anything remotely good. What drugs are people taking that they think this could be a good picture?!

I kinda like the way it turns into a flying woodlouse! But come on, it's just a sketch!
