SWEEPS: DAY 22!!Quentin Tarantino (!!)Directs Tonight

Published at:  May 19, 2005 3:07:23 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

JULES: You know the shows on TV?

VINCENT: I don't watch TV.

JULES: Yeah, but, you are aware that there's an invention called television, and on this invention they show shows, right?

Quentin Tarantino, in my view one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of history? No snob when it comes to television.

Tarantino’s love of “Kung Fu” and “Star Trek” is well-documented, but I also remember him talking recently about how great he thought James Caan was on NBC’s “Las Vegas.” He directed an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” He plays a recurring role as criminal mastermind McKenas Cole on “Alias.” In 1995, a few months after “Pulp Fiction” cemented his star status, he directed the almost-last episode of “ER’s” first season.

And he directed tonight’s two-hour fifth-season finale of “CSI,” another blockbuster Thursday-night series with initials where its title should be. Series creator Anthony Zuiker wrote the teleplay, but Tarantino supplied the story, which deals with a vengeful criminal who buries alive a member of the CSI team. The installment also marks the last filmed appearance of Frank "He's Black On The Left Side" Gorshin, who died only hours ago.

*****

Tonight’s the last Thursday of sweeps, and the last Thursday of the regular TV season, and Tarantino’s main competition is likely the live season finale of “The Apprentice,” during which the Donald will crown hottie 26-year-old real estate broker Kendra Todd his latest high-paid lackey.

Also on tap are the season finales of, among other things, “The O.C.” and “ER.” The latter marks the last regular appearance of Noah Wylie, who plays John Carter of Mars.

Set your VCRs and PVRs, then take up valuable bandwidth with your predictions and reactions:

“CSI”: 8 p.m. Thursday. CBS.

“The OC”: 8 p.m. Thursday. Fox.

“The Apprentice”: 9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

“ER”: 10 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

Look! Some of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite TV shows on season-box DVD!!

Alias

CSI

Fox Force Five

Kung Fu

Star Trek

And look! The “ER” season in which Quentin Tarantino made his television directorial debut!!

I'm going to go against the OFF-TOPIC BS rule which is written right next to where I'm typing, and say THANK YOU for telling us about Wonderfalls when it was coming out. My fiancee and I stayed up til 4 in the morning to watch the final 5 episodes because we HAD to know what happened. That show is a gem. Now bring me my dancing slave girl to feed me a frog.

Frank Gorshin died Tuesday. That was two DAYS ago. I suppose it is technically hours ago, but using that logic it was also hours ago that John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Everybody likes "Pulp Fiction"? What about "Jackie Brown"? Notice how I leave the "Kill Bill" thing out.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Is that tease still valid? If I remember correctly (and I think I do) two regular characters (opening credits) from the same show would be killed off this season. And it would happen in the same episode (I think what you said was within minutes of one another). We saw one on The OC last week but only one. Are the teases still accurate or was the tip bogus?

    by brendon

For my money, Quentin Tarantino's episode of ER was the best directed they ever had. Now he's gonna sort CSI out. Will he ever work for a drama show that doesn't have initials for a name? I'd like to see him create his own, personally...

Wow, this was a really good episode

    by ribbons

Is "CSI:" normally this good? I'm guessing not. In any case, Tarantino might want to think about collaborating more often. Great episode, and the last line ("Don't take it with you") ended the show on the perfect note. I found it interesting that there were a few references to Tarantino movies peppered throughout the "teleplay;" I'm guessing/hoping that those were written by Anthony Zuiker and not Tarantino himself; however, I'd be willing to bet money on that obscure "Deep Thoughts" reference being Tarantino's idea, the crazy bastard. Although tonight's episode's quieter moments had their poignancy (and the unexpected appearance of Frank Gorshin as well, for different reasons), I think the scene I most appreciated was Nick Stokes imagining he was dead. Not only was it pure Tarantino and deliriously out of place, but the fact that Stokes can love his father and still imagine him being more concerned about how his body would look at the wake than anything else was an incredibly subtle touch that I wasn't expecting. So yeah, I enjoyed this episode immensely on its own merits, and if "CSI:" is anything like this on regular occasions I ought to tune in more often.

  • As self-respecting geeks, you probably don't watch "ER." Well I do, and I have come from the land of NBC to tell you that the name of the character who Noah Wyle plays on the "ER" is Carter (either Something Carter or Carter Something, I don't know; pick one). Herc was probably just being irreverent there, no big scoops or anything. It'd be an awfully big coincidence and highly unlikely for a lot of reasons that Noah Wyle would be John Carter of Mars; I wouldn't speculate about that stuff at this point.

    I agree

    by vern

I agree with Reservoir Dogs being his only good movie, EXCEPT I think Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and the Kill Bills are all even better. But yes, other than those five movies that he directed, the guy has not had much to offer. The CSI episode was okay for tv though. I liked the ants.

Man, I'm STILL itching from those fire ants! What a knockout episode. And kudos to the late, great Frank Gorshin - a machine-gun impressionist and probably the all-time best. Rich Little's a hack next to this guy!

    On the John Carter thing...

    by wonder man

Noah Wyle's character name on ER is, in fact, DR. JOHN CARTER. Nothing to do with Mars or Edgar Rice Burroughs, but it's his character's name nevertheless. And that's why Herc made the reference. And, as one of the oldest QT fans, I can't wait for this episode to screen here Down Under -- I'm not a CSI fan but I've seen a handful of episodes and am interested to see where The QT takes it. And, thankfully, it sounds like they've let him make it his own, rather than making him totally subvert his style to the status quo of the show (which, other than one or two quick scenes/references, is what I thought they did to him on ER).

    Never seen Saw

    by gheorghe zamfir

But Tarantino was on Conan last week, and he said he actually got the idea for the episode from an old TV movie that I guess had a similar conceit. Anyways, I liked the episode, good tv, and was very surprised to see the excellent performance by George Eads, didn't know he had that in him. And I wanted to drop in that while CSI isn't a character drama, or arc driven by any means, they've managed to give the show enough depth that there have been other episodes that managed to string in some character resonance and emotional poignancy, and I think they've done it quite well when they take the time for it. And yea, I wanna know about that 2 character death tip we got too, I hope it just doesn't get buried if it turns out to be wrong, I'd still like to know at the least what the speculation was.

    QT's Warren Zevon tribute

    by rockgolf

The song on the cassette the bad guy sent was "Outside Chance" by the Turtles. It was an album track never released as a single. It was also written by the late Warren Zevon, probably his first sale.

    Quentin CSI

    by mafu

I watched the season finale of "CSI" last night because I knew Quentin had directed it. I occasionally watch repeats of "CSI" on Spike TV, but I'm not much of a "CSI" fan. But holy shit did Tarantino hit it out of the park with that episode. I agree with other talkbackers, in that the finale had Tarantino written all over it. Morbid humor, funny and interesting side conversations, exploding humans and fire ants, and a skewed yet real sense of drama. I hope he gets to make his own television show.

    Absolute Best

    by topaz4206

Best CSI episode ever. And i've seen every single one (hackneyed spinoffs not included). IMHO the best CSI ep's have always been when a single psychopath fights against the whole team, and this was the best of THOSE. Oh, and another touch that was PURE Q.T. was the "Dukes of Hazzard" boardgame....Awesome.

    Great Episode

    by flem_snopes

I kind of like CSI. Good visuals, Petersen's character is great and the soundtrack is always awesome.***That being said, this was probably the best episode every. I thought at 2 hours it would drag, and it didn't.***Eads WAS better than I expected. Glad someone said who the song was by. It sounded familiar but unrecognizable at the same time. Now I know why.***The best part was John Saxon blowing himself up. That was over the top. When they found the explosives at the very end, under the coffin, that was pretty good, too. Very tense. 'Cause, you know, Eads is a secondary character and he could have been disposed of pretty easily. As a fan of the show I did like it when Petersen said at the end "I want my guys back." It's about time.

    ex machina

    by electric_monk

Not a CSI fan by far, as I find the deus ex machina that threads these series not realistic. Maybe its the William Peterson, who seems to know all the answers to everything (sort of a semi-annoying Sherlock Holmes). Any, last nights episode was well done, but the direction was just like any other standard TV drama. I did love the Dukes of Hazzard game scene. QT has a great sense of humor, which is what I like about him. And it was great/sad to see Frank Gorshin in his final TV performace. Still, you knew the crew was going to save him, if only because with NCIS killing off one its main characters, you know CBS would not allow them to bump off George. Still, I wonder if the actor felt this was more punishment for his little "sick call" he did at the beginning of the season. Sort of CBS saying "Look what we can do to you." Still, it was good until the last half hour, when you realized that after 90 minutes, the CSI guy was going to live.

    SAW?

    by jizza

I highly doubt that QT drew any inspiration for the finale from SAW. That movie was awful. The only similarity was that Stokes had a tape recorder in the coffin with him. And if you think that Saw was the first movie to use that device, well, you need to see more movies.

Two Characters Gone 'Without A Trace'

    by napoleon park

In addition to every QT movie being pretty good, that vampire movie he wrote ("Dusk 'til Dawn?") and that crime movie he scripted ("True Romance"?) and the movies he only directed or appeared in parts of ("Four Rooms", "Sin City") didn't turn out too shabby either.
My favorite attention to detail was one character mentioning how another character had changed. (Scene right before the Dukes of Hazard board game.) * As long as Herc was mentioning season finales, he missed "Without A Trace". Last weeks "WAT" was brilliant; as good as this weeks "House" and I thought both were Emmy consideration worthy. This weeks "Trace" was not quite that great, but if you were specifically looking for a show where two main characters seem to have been killed, this was the place to check, though the cliff-hanger ending was lifted from last years "Third Watch" cliffhanger and a specific scene they did on CSI Miami a couple of years ago.

    Two character deaths

    by gheorghe zamfir

In the original tip, Herc said it was from one of his (top ten?) favorite shows, since I don't think Without a Trace has even ever been mentioned in Coaxial that probably doesn't cut it.

to anyone who saw the finale and has been following this show, i have a question. that girl in jail and her father, were they involved in a previous episode? because my only complaint against the finale is that it didnt explain or even try to tell us why those 2 were connected to all this. i figure the CSI team is responsible for putting her in jail or something but it would have been nice to know for sure.

    Bouncy X

    by the g-man

I could be wrong, but I think the point was that the father simply picked a CSI at random and part of the reason that he was so hard to track down was that the current teams (Grissom, etc.) had, in fact, NOT met up with him or his daughter before. The CSIs who put his daughter away were from a previous team.
