Young Professor X in X3'

Published at:  May 16, 2005 2:53:46 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some interesting breaking news. BBC has announced that a bloke by the name of Scott Madej (an unknown actor) has been cast as "The Young Professor X" in X3. I was pretty sure Patrick Stewart is confirmed to return and this doesn't mean he won't be back in the wheelchair, it just means we could be seeing some flashbacks. This doesn't surprise me at all, especially since Juggernaut is confirmed (played by Vinnie Jones) to be in the flick and if we're going to see any of his origin at all, it'd have to be in flash-back and involving Xavier (remember he's Xavier's half-brother).

This young man's name has been circulating around email boxes and message boards for the last few days, usually with speculation that he was playing Gambit. I even got some iffy info sent to me from people with ties to those at Fox 100% sure that he was Matthew Vaughn's first choice to play the Cajun. Looks like there was some confusion from the get go, but I'm intrigued about what kind of comic book movie someone like Matthew Vaughn can pop out. I'm sure that we'll start seeing some big casting announcements soon since the minor rolls seem to be filling up. Here's one of the rash of emails we got over the last 10 minutes! Thanks to everybody who gave us the heads up!

Cheers Harry,

I caught some commentary regarding X-Men 3 on BBC 2
just a few minutes ago. Apparently, An American actor
named Scott Madej will be playing a younger version of
Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier. The report went on
to say that the Studio nor Director Matthew Vaughn
confirmed whether it would be a flashback sequence.

My guess is that it is tied in with the plot somehow.
Else why be so secretive?

Have a good one!

  • This is never going to be that huge is it? Oh well, I'll just be happy if it does the essence of the stories justice....No M Cron Crystal though...and no battle in space With the Starjammers and the Imperial Gaurd. No Storm meeting Gambit while she was trapped in a 13 year old body.No Archangel. No Kitty Pryde /Colossus romance. No Gambit and Rogue. Nightcrawler and Mystique though...but no Rogue in there.Young Magneto helping Xavier I bet since there are flashbacks...and one of the reasons the mansion is so heavily fortified is because of Juggie's hatred. Hmmm..I bet we get a Wolvie-Nightcrawler drinking scene.
    Do us proud Matt.

    by ribbons

Quint, I'm inclined to trust you as far as your guess that this Scott Madej fellow will be playing a young Professor X goes, and I'm sure that it would have to involve the Juggernaut in some way, but keep in mind that in the comic book, whatever his face was who was "Charlie's" step-brother was just some average Joe until he entered some temple in Vietnam and picked up some bizarre jewel. That's probably not how it's gonna go down in 'X-Men 3.' If anything, they'll probably just make the Juggernaut a mutant, so unless his powers manifest at some point in his late childhood, or unless by "origin" you mean the decision to become the Juggernaut or whatever, I probably wouldn't hold my breath for one. Wolverine's the only character who really had an origin so far, and that's because this series' concept is such that filmmakers don't have to deal with that sort of exposition. In other news, I don't like flashbacks.

Gambit is wrong for this movie

    by link-star

I'm sorry, but the cajun is just plain wrong for X3. He's the least interesting of the characters and he is too similar to the character of Wolverine for him to be a valuable element to the story. Archangel would be a great addition to the movie universe, mainly because he will be the most visually arresting character on screen, as will Beast.
Personally I don't like the way this flick looks to be shaping up. It just feels wrong, although I am reserving judgement until I see the thing up on screen.

    by childe roland

...to latch onto Singer's gayness and use that as a club to try and beat down anything he's done. X2 was a great sequel to X-Men and surpassed the original (which was no slouch in terms of adapting some pretty difficult material to the screen) on virtually every level. Singer also gave us The Usual Suspects, which remains one of the coolest and most rewatchable crime suspense dramas ever. And has anyone seen how good House is? I don't care who or what the guy likes to boink (assuming everyone is legal and consenting), so long as he keeps turning out quality entertainment. Any homophobe who pretends not to like Singer's stuff because it's got "gay subtext" is just afraid that liking the work of a gay man means he might be gay himself. As for X3, Gambit could fit if played as a middle-of-the-roader (moreso than Wolverine was percieved in X-Men) who can't be trusted throughout most of the film and turns at the end to Xavier's way of thinking. Great way to bring the franchise full circle and set up a decent reason for Wolverine to leave at the end (he wouldn't like Gambit) and make his own movie.

    by nice marmot

It's a waste of time. And we don't need no stinkin' new characters. Especially Gambit. I remain in the vast minority that never liked this character. I am SO trying to remain optimistic about this thing. But w/ Singer's departure, Vinny Jones as Juggernaut (Half brother, NOT step brother), and talks of Angel being a chick (w/ too many already-female characters available), It's damn easy to prepare for the worst & say they should cast Richard Pryor as Xavier.

But what about the naked blue gal

    by vern

I think we all agree that the only reason to watch these movies is the naked blue gal. She is a real good character we all enjoy, in my opinion. As for "gay subtext," today's x-bigots have the power to find gay subtext in absolutely anything, from this message to The Man Show to World's Biggest Gang Bang. If and when they ever stick their penis in a vagina, they can't help but see it as a metaphor for a butt. I guarantee you within the next year they find gay subtext in the US Constitution and use that to justify making the Patriot Act permanent. Anyway, everybody knows Singer was going for a Martin Luther King/Malcolm X parallel so that guy is only admitting that gay rights is a civil rights issue. Where's Mystique when you need her? She's real militant, she could explain shit to this fucker.

Total agreement w/ Jasper Stillwell and Child Roland

    by thecapedrevenger

So good to see such thoughtful comments here. What Singer has done is make the X-film series (because I hate the term franchise)a tough needle to thread. The X films could have so easily been more violent, more "music video-stylish," and filled with more special effects. Instead, he not only made them elegant, but also very watchable and accessible. The drama quotient is very high, because there are set-ups and payoff to things. Magneto's escape from prison is on par with Hanibal Lector's in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. What could easily happen here is what happened to a lot of comics in the 1980s - in the interest of making the stories "cool" and "adult," there could be an over-emphasis on violence, instead of sophistication.

...and thinks "Shadow King?" Field trip to Egypt, with a minor side-trip to an ancient ruins where Cain Marko finds the bands of Cytorrak: 2 origin stories in 1. Shadow King could be done easily through CGI nowadays (especially with X3's budget), and the setting could mean a larger role for Halle Berry as well - if the studio caves in to keep her involved (remember that the Young Professor met Young Ororo on the streets of Cairo....in his original meeting with the Shadow King). Then again, after another season of 24, can Fox really get away with Ahmal Farouk as the bad guy?

Also, I know I'm gonna catch shit for this...

    by ribbons

...but I enjoy the character of Gambit in the same way that I enjoyed the character of Maggot (however briefly). While the bloom fell off of that rose pretty quickly, Joe Kelly's exquisite first issue of "New X-Men" or just "X-Men" or whatever it was back then, right after all that falderal with Bastion ("Zero Tolerance?" Was that it?), which ironically enough had an appearance by Juggernaut, set up the character of Maggot perfectly. Both of their powers are kind of lame (Gambit's not in theory, but since he only throws playing cards...), but they haD a certain aura about them; they're smooth-talking, charming, very idiosyncratic characters who for all the world seem like the epitome of confidence but at the end of the day nurse secret burdens and pasts that they'd like to leave behind but can't. I never realized how much of a wallop the archetype packed until I was suckered into giving a shit about Maggot, but I guess what I'm saying is, the man who flutters pulses when he says, "Good Morning" but goes home at night all alone is an attractive one, a bit of a martyr and a bit of a misfit, and the type of person that all of us misfits who go to sleep alone would like to think (pretend?) we are. I'm gonna stop now because I just realized that this post is getting a little too personal for my own comfort, but basically, if I had to put a finger to the pulse of the Gambit fanboy, I think it would read something like that. Or maybe they just think that tossing cards is cool. Makes as much sense as anything else.

if I hadn't pressed the return key the last time, the last I heard was supposed to be a younger character who could interact with Rogue. He is supposed to start off bad and come over to the X-men later in the movie. Last I had heard they were looking to James VanDerBeek (the Dawson) for this. Can sort of visually see this, but the voice ruins it. As someone who likes Gambit, I just hope it doesn't get screwed up. As for my own wishful thinking on the subject of Kitty Pride, I don't care as long as she's hot! I could see a Kristin Kreuk filling out her jumpsuit pretty easily!

Back to Vaughn I loved Layer Cake and I'm glad to see they went to a low key director like him instead of Owe Boll or someone. I don't understand why everyone is defending Singer so much the first 2 X-Men movies were good but they could have been great. Also setting up so much in X2 and then dropping everything to make a shitty version of Super-man, that's not cool. I'm also decently confident that Vaughn will keep a lot of the underlying political context in the story but also add in some bad ass fights, which I think the first two films lacked. I want to see some cars being tossed and shit blowing up, not Sabertooth being tossed off the statue of liberty. They better bring Sabertooth back that film did gave that character no credit.

I remember watching an old episode of the Xmen cartoon that revolves around alternate realities. Bishop and his sister go back in time to fix problems with the timeline. You are dead-on about Kurt/Nightcrawler. The best aspect of the character is his happy, Errol Flynn-style swashbuckling, not the stupid "I am so miserable and persecuted" Christian-guilt thing that got added into the character later. The original character was a good-spirited, joyful swashbuckler, not an angsty priest. Good call.

Losing Confidence In This Third Film

    by barron34

Fox really should not have let Singer go. The third film has been set up to be at least part of the Dark Phoenix saga by the end of the second film. Singer clearly has a very good grasp of the entire X-Men mythos, and generally knows how to choose the best aspects of that mythos for film. The next logical step is to do the Dark Phoenix story via the Hellfire Club as the enemy, in my opinion. Why on earth are they bringing in the Juggernaut? The character is completely superfluous to any possible continuation of the whole Jean Grey plot-line. Fans do not particularly care about the Juggernaut. They want Sentinals or the Hellfire Club. I would really like to know where they are going with this movie. What is the story? How will they bring Jean back? Bringing Jean Grey back must be the main engine of this next movie. I can not see how they can logically move forward with the story already set-up by the first two movies without addressing the Dark Phoenix stuff, and Juggernaut has no role in that story-line. It is just worrisome to an old fan of the great Claremont/Byrne era of the comicbooks. It seems to me, from the characters they are considering, that the new filmmakers do not really have a grasp of the mythos like Singer and his people did. They should really go with the beginning of the Drak Phoenix story-line, with the Hellfire Club as the villains. They should go with the classic X-Men line-up from that period: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Kitty Pryde, plus Rogue and Iceman, since they have already been introduced in the films. Honestly, one of the best moments in X2 for fans was when Colossus turned into steel and put one of Strker's commandos through a wall. Singer knew how to appease fans with great moments like that, which is a big part of why he was so successful making these movies. It just seems to me that the new filmmakers are going off on weird tangents that do not mesh with the sensible path that Singer set out on with the first two movies. I'd hate to see the X-Men franchise messed up like Batman was, God forbid. They really should not have let Singer go. They should have given him time to make whatever other movie, LOGAN'S RUN, SUPERMAN, or whatever, and just have gotten him back to make at least one more X-Men movie, preferably more. Big mistake letting him go, I think.

my casting 2 cents...and a priceless sex move!

    by the_man_from_rio

i think we should get lorenzo lamas to play gambit...c'mon! oh...and i totally agree with whoever mentioned casting anna paquin as rogue...it's the most atrocious casting in the history of comic book movies. rogue was a goddess in the comics, 10.532 times hotter than anna paquin, an average-hot girl, who, if not a movie star, i could definetely score, and even give her an "abe lincoln" at the end of the night (for those of you not familiar with the timeless move, an abe lincoln is when you're fucking a girl from behind, and suddenly, you give her a punch in the back of the neck and she passes out...then...you proceed to jacking off all over her face, mainly over her cheeks, chin, and mustache area...the...you shave all your pubes off, strategically placing them in the area full of cum, thus...giving her an "abe lincoln"...ps: having a camera at hand is always a plus, for you will be able to share this accomplishment with friends and rejoice for hours...now to try it...aaaaaaand GO!)
