SWEEPS: DAY 18!!THE L WORD Finale!!Penultimate DEADWOOD!!

Published at:  May 15, 2005 6:18:04 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

So why is the “L Word” universe’s strip-club industry so awed by Mia Kirshner’s character? Because Jenny goes bottomless in her act? Because she tosses a dress onstage before she emerges? Because she leaves her pants bunched around her ankles. I don’t get it, but I’ll take this opportunity to thank my master Satan for letting Jenny get this stripper job; now the writers needn’t bother themselves with idiotic excuses to get Mia Kirshner naked every week.

And now that “Deadwood’s” second season is nearly over, will HBO let its acclaimed but little-watched (thanks to “Desperate Housewives”) western have a dialogue scene or two to break up those endless action sequences?

Take up valuable bandwidth with your predictions and reactions.

“Deadwood”: 9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

“L Word”: 10 p.m. Sunday. Showtime.

Anyone know when this comes out? I'm a lazy cocksucker and I can't bother to search for the answer myself. Loves me some Deadwood!

HBO should cling to Deadwood like stink on a johnson.

    by filmrage

I haven't seen 'the L word'. I live in Korea and have to get my fix of Deadwood via a torrent download so have to wait till about Tuesday to snag it.
. . . . Apart from the very occasional switching around the sub plots making it seem every so slightly soap operaish i think Deadwood is the best work American TV has ever produced.
. . . . When something is highly entertaining and also gives food for thought about the human condition you know you have quality too. if i were an English teacher in the USA i'd give classes on the Deadwood scripts along side the Shakespear.
. . . . "Now children, when Cy says 'ain't no good woman but one with magotts in her eyes' what do you think he means"? . . . hehe.
It's gonna be a long wait when the seasons over for the third. I just hope David Milch doesn't get an identity crisis and run off to South Africa.

I would love a new Tales from the Crypt...

    by chickychow

Seems like this Showtime show with all those geek-beloved directors could take the reins. hasn't been a good anthology show since TftC. Outer Limits? Crap. New Twilight Zone? Fuckin awful. Night Visions? Never heard of it? Trust me, it sucked some balls... That said, the atmosphere of Deadwood sometimes resembles an eerie horror flick (especially the scenes involving Wolcott in the whorehouse, or anything with Farnham's creepy assistant, Richardson. That guy rocks!). But you could have Ian McShane read the phonebook lit by candlelight and I'd be hooked.

I absolutely loathe the Mia "Jenny" Kirshner storyline this season. It's been a complete and utter waste of time. Based on the previews from last week though, it seems like she starts cutting herself, but it could be misdirection.

Remember the Crazy Cat Lady from the KIDZ NEWS ep of Simpsons? Well how many eps has she been in this season alone?! It's so stupid now. Remember how Disco Stu was seen once, then not seen for a few years, now he is all over the place? It's stupid. Family Guy is starting that already. The Fighting Chicken bit is done, and the Vaudeville guy is idiotic to bring back. Come on. Greased Up Deaf Guy was seen twice already this season, and they are only 3 eps into the season. How soon until Salty the Fisherman makes his return? What has Bob Funland been up to?

DEADWOOD, along with the SOPRANOS and SIX FEET UNDER are TV at is best. HBO will stick with it. And them that disagrees suck cock by choice!!!!
Seriously, this season especially has seen the best acting, not only on TV, but in any medium, for a long time. Ian McShane doesn't just deserve an Emmy, he deserves an Oscar!

    by darth busey

Greetings, fellow cocksuckers. I find myself making a mandatory post about Ian McShane every week at this point. I loved the scene where Swearengen peeked over the edge of his balcony rail to try and catch a peek of William's memorial, and then ran inside when he saw Doherty et al. coming up the thoroughfare. And people think old Al doesn't care...

I think Al Swearengen might be the most richly layered character in the last 20 years of American television.

I haven't seen "Lovejoy" but I highly recommend you try to see "Deadwood". We have it all on DVD, both seasons up to this point! His character, as Darth Busey says, is probably the most richly layered, well written, superbly acted one ever on TV. Gotta love his last scene last night.....and, yeah, I knew there was more to his not going to the funeral than he let on...he can show compassion, but only on his own terms. Swearengen, cocksucker, for President!!

    by cookylamoo

Too bad Reed drank himself to death. He was still great in Gladiator. Does anyone remember McShane was Sue Ellen's British boyfriend on Dallas? How old is this guy?

  • This show has been dillydallying a little in it's last two or three eps, William Bullock's injury and the ongoing Annexation plots have taken up too much screentime with too little results. They've slightly immobilized Seth and Al. With the grief Seth is going through, how interesting it would be if he HAD to spring into action (yeah I realize next week that'll prbly happen but its the LAST ep!). Meanwhile, the intriguing feud between Woo and Li has been put off to the sidelines until only now. I even feel like the uneasy Wolcott/Tolliver relationship has softened a bit, and they're introducing Andy and Hearst too late in the game, IMO. They only have 13 episodes, they gotta make em all count. Don't get me wrong, I'd watch this show if my hair were on fire, or if a guy was jerkin off on my horse. Just the petty complaints of a big fan who wants his favorite show to be great and not just really good... Guess its better than wanting it to be kinda good while its only kinda sucky (I'm looking at you, Carnivale)

    HBO

    by doc farthammer

Tales from the Crypt was better than Carnivale. Way, way better. Carnivale was such a weak execution of an intriguing premise, it could have been an American version of something British. Having watched their available DVDs, I now believe "Deadwood" and "The Wire" are the finest television America has ever produced. The layers of characterization are simply staggering, and the storylines are both intelligent character studies and lessons in politics. People pursue or resist their yearnings while trying to outrun the crushing gears of society. These shows are the new literature: as complex and rewarding as great novels, but since people don't read great novels anymore, it's up to shows like this to elevate the masses (or how ever many of them can be persuaded to watch, which is still a lot more than the number of people that read new, good novels).
Swearengen and Bullock are both fucking fascinating, and on The Wire you've got their equals in McNulty, Omar, and all the dockworkers from season two (how awesome was that season two story, by the way, an updated On the Waterfront-style American tragedy). I'm glad HBO cancelled Carnivale so that its masturbatory "fantasy" doesn't take away precious producing dollars from The Wire and Deadwood. Also, Sopranos hasn't been consistently good since season 3. Just saying.

    Whack Sopranos

    by chickychow

Agreed, Doc Farthammer, with everything you said, especially the part about Sopranos. Sopranos should take a good long look at how well The Wire and Deadwood are structured and envy them, since it's always been such an inconsistant show. Yes, I've always watched and enjoyed it, but it's never topped Season 1, which was fuckin great. 2 and 3 were good, helped by terrific villains Richie Aprile and Ralphie, but season 4 was a tremendous dud (and NO, not just because of its lack of violence, it was just a bore plain and simple) and 5, while an improvement, was ultimately a letdown, with its criminal wasting of Robert Loggia and Steve Buscemi. Both seasons always seem to have story threads appearing and disappearing (Tim Daly anyone?) with no real consequence, and sometimes no continuity of character. Its time for this sporadically great, frequently disappointing show to come to an end.

    Deadwood Pacing

    by darth busey

While I agree with some of your concerns re: pacing on Deadwood, I am extremely pleased with the overall quality from one week to the next. Last week's show was only 44 minutes long, so there is no script padding here. Milch has a story to tell, and it appears that he has things planned out well in advance. I'm looking forward to the burning of the Gem and Bullock's making friends with a future President.

    Running time

    by chickychow

Now that u bring it up, this season definetly seems, on average, to be shorter than last, most eps running about 48-51 min long. While I complain about some of the storylines being a bit plodding, I still wish each ep were a full hour, if only cuz I want as much as I can get (tho I definetly don't need more Commisioner Jarry, who needs his throat cut but quick). However, the only HBO show that's ever taken the entire hour every week was OZ, which I suppose makes sense considering there were about 10 different storylines going on at the same time.

A lot of cable companies - even broke-ass bankrupt Adelphia - offer HBO on Demand now. So all you cocksuckers with cable boxes and HBO have no excuse anymore. And in answer to the query about the actor's age, Ian's in his early fuckin' sixties.

When he told Jarry that Bullock's stepson was his GODSON I did a spit take worthy of any silent film - Deadwood is full of amazing characters - at the top is McShane - now holding the record for three soliloquies during fellatio!
