Tarantino to TV Guide:

Published at:  May 11, 2005 9:43:31 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Is the director of the four-hour “Kill Bill” warming up to the idea of creating a 22-hour story?

"I'm interested in doing a show of my own,” writer-director Tarantino says in next week’s edition of TV Guide. “This [directing the "CSI" season finale] was testing the water. There are some ideas that I've
had for movies that are too long. Most people aren't
down with four hour movies. But TV has caught up with
my aspirations. You could truly do these stories as
a TV show."

    Fricking Sweet

    by john-locke

Sounds like a fricking sweet idea to me, I bet he'd get the highest ratings ever... EVERYBODY watches Tarantino films, maybe he's gonna use some Elmore Leonard characters, that would be fricking sweeter... Or maybe this is Jules's walking the Earth and figuring shit out whilst helping people and shit like in Kung-Fu.... That would also be sweet. Whatever QT decides to do is gonna be sweet... Man I can't wait to see this shit on TV especially if it's on HBO cos they allow all the Violence and stuff but then again they'd probably just cancel it...

or Fox Force Five as they were known in a previous incarnation? i'd watch either one with joy. all the profanity could be kept in too -- just bleeped (which would add to the grindhouseiness). more importantly -- where's the KILL BILL videogame?!?! that's what NEEDS to be made. Every time I hear...

    by childe roland

...about the next thing Tarantino has expressed an interest in doing, I'm reminded of that movie with Dudley Moore where he gets the inmates in an asylum to write ad copy (Crazy People?). He asks: "Who wants to be in advertising?" and everyone raises their hands eagerly. Then someone else asks: "Who wants to be a fire truck?" and they all start hopping up and down, raising their hands even more excitedly. I love most of what Tarantino's been involved with as a writer, but the guy has the most debilitating case of Adult ADD I've ever seen when it comes to settling on a new project and following through. Again, I blame all the coke.

    by aerob

I'm tired of everyone inserting him in "he should do X". Fact is QT has his own unique style and he definitely puts himself up in a director-as-star role. He's an arrogant showoff. He's a very talented arrogant showoff, and that makes his movies entertaining. But I wouldn't want him near Star Trek or any other property that I love for itself. But if he wants to do his own TV show I'm all for it. Could be fun. Just stick it on cable so he doesn't get nailed by the censors.

but I just wanted to illustrate how a big time film director can push a series but have it get destroyed by the demands of weekly tv. Getting shoved in to that Friday night slot just killed it. It's ratings just got too low for Fox and they treated it like a redheaded step child. Shit, I barely saw a commercial for it after it's premiere. But had it been a film with the same audience, it would have had a No. 1 weekend opening. If QT goes with HBO, it'd do fine, but on a broadcast net, no fucking way.

That's usually my rant! And it usually draws a lot of fanboy flack in these talkbacks. I agree with about 99.9% of what you typed in that epic freaking post of yours (although I think Tony Scott should get a lot of the credit for True Romance, Roger Avary should get partial credit for that, Dogs and Pulp, and that QT should at least acknowledge City of Fire as his inspiration for Reservoir Dogs). The guy was a talented writer who directed two films astonishingly well and then just became self-derivative. I still think there was more than the drug os success sabotaging him (unless that's a Hollywood street tag for cocaine), but the last thing he did of any real cinematic worth was Pulp Fiction (and I prefer Dogs, myself). So you're not alone in your perceptions, for whatever that's worth.

All he does is talk and talk about things that he wants done whether it be in movies and television. Just do it. I was always hoping for the movie with Michael Madsen and John Travolta as the Vega brothers from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I think that would have been great. But all he does is yak about it and it will never see the light of the day. Sigh.

Great rant, I agree totally. And actually I think even Pulp Ficton had problems from the storytelling perspective (still a fun movie though). And by the way I personally think TV is fantastic right now. There are a lot of great shows on the air right now, and yes, some very original ones. Production values are better than they've ever been. Televison actors are stronger than ever, and the writing blows most shows from past decades out of the water. If you want to compare television episodes directly to film of course they'll pale by comparison. But compared to past TV, this is the golden era of television.

I'll bet that's the way he goes. About a video shop which has film geeks both working and shopping there. It'll last a half season at most because it'll be so impenetrable. And it will have that guy from The Dukes Of Hazzards on it every week doing a monologue. He'll walk in, take off his cowboy hat, do a fifteen minute straight to camera piece and then fuck off. Oh, and to boost ratings and save the series during sweeps he'll have Pam grier come in a shoot someone and then jiggle. Yes, yes. That will indeed be a show stopper.

    by childe roland

...so many folks coming around to the reality that QT doesn't walk on water. In fact, lately he's barely been dog paddling. I still maintain he has (or, perhaps more accurately, had) one of the best ears for dialogue in the business. He just lacks the focus to be an effective director anymore (and he may have gotten very, very lucky with how well Dogs turned out because, as pointed out above, Pulp had some problems). Kill Bill as released was just all over the place and pretty pointless. I have difficulty imagining how a differently cut version of the film would work, but I'm willing to give it a skeptical viewing. Barring some out-of-his-ass impressive (and timely) next outing as a writer/director, Quentin should go back to script doctoring. It really is what he does best.

    QT on Letterman

    by filmrage

    That's some freaky deaky shit.
I'm just reading up on the progress of this talkback (ok ok so i'm seeing what comments anyone made about my post but come on, we all do it) and as i'm living in South Korea we get American TV a day late and who walks on to Letterman but the QT'ster himself.
I got to say, the fuckers still got a shit load of spark and is full of ideas so who knows. He could catch a second wind.
. . . as far as Dogs being 'inspired' by City of fire. I don't care as it's Tarantinos execution (if you s'cuse the pun) that makes his early stuff great not the actual story line or the 'mind bending' timelines.
. . . . So he lifts dialogue too. You might find in a Walter Mathau film called 'Charley Varrick' that the mafia guy advises the bank manager that they will go to work on him with a 'pair of pliers and a blow torch'. I don't mind that he used that as it's a cool, nasty as fuck phrase and is a beautiful punchline is Pulp.
By the way, why do people keep saying QT's movies are violent. In the case of RD, PF and TR they arn't so bad. it just feels more violent cause you care about the characters more.
. . . Just to be clear. My post was not attacking QT. It was an effort to bring to lighy the long distance sicophancy directed to the cult of QT.
. . . he was good, now he's crap, he may be good again. ;)

New QT Show, would fail on regular TV

    by snaieke

QT's style is too edgy to be on the big networks, he would have to go on FX or HBO\Showtime. Just because he said he wants to do somethings on TV doesn't mean he would be writing\directing every episode...... he could be like Mel Gibson with "Complete Savages" and direct an episode or two and have minor guest appearances before being cancelled....... OR it could be a hint that he'll be doing an animated show a la SW: Clone Wars. but until 2007 I won't have a clue if it will even happen, because he missed the creative boat for next season 05-06 unless he wants to be a midseason replacement show.
