Capone alerts his fellow Chicago citizens about the RAIDERS ADAPTATION screening This Friday!!!

Published at:  May 10, 2005 1:50:14 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with Capone, shilling for the brilliant shot for shot remake of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK that we've been singing the praises about for quite a long while here at AICN. '80s. Video camera. Inventive kids. Can't get enough. Anyway, here's Capone to give you Chicago-ites the lowdown on how to see this flick! Enjoy!

Hey, everyone. Capone in Chicago here with big, big, big news for everyone (at least those of you in my fair city) who has been desperate to catch the biggest movie event in all of history. No, not the one with Sith in the title. I'm referring, of course, to the glorious shot-for-shot remake of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK that those ingenious teenagers spent seven years of their lives during the 1980s putting together with only a home video camera and a dream. I was one of the blessed who caught about the first hour or so of this at BNAT 4 during the breakfast break, and I was among the loudest of those who booed with much fervor when the film was stopped in order to play whatever far-inferior film was next on Harry's playlist for the day. Probably a lame LORD OF THE RINGS movie or some such nonsense.

By now you probably know the legend of this film, since it's been well-documented on this site. If not, here's Harry's take on it when the film premiered in Austin shortly after the BNAT showing:

HERE, RIGHT HERE!!!

Apparently Daniel Clowes is writing the screenplay about the childhood adventures of the filmmakers, and Paramount is threatening to release it. I pray this happens. Anyway, this potentially once-in-a-lifetime screening of the Steven Spielberg-approved, Vanity Fair-featured RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: THE ADAPTATION is a benefit for The Chicago International Film Festival's 2005 Future Filmmakers Festival, and is taking place this Friday, May 13 at 8:30 p.m., at Columbia College's Film Row Cinema (1104 S. Wabash, 8th Floor). Tickets are $20; $10 with a student ID. Probably the best way to get tickets in advance is to go to:

THIS SITE RIGHT HERE! GO!

Or you can call 312-425-9400, ext. 102, although I didn't have much luck getting through today.

More than likely, I'll be doing something for the event, possibly involving the after-screening Q&A with filmmakers Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala. But even if I'm not, I'll be right there watching it just to see how the story turns out. Don't ruin it for me!! See you there.

Capone

email: You know, Capone did a shot for shot remake of his favorite movie as a kid, too... It's called DEEP THROAT, but his version will get you landed in jail! Email him here to ask about more info!

  • Gus Van Sant's tragic "reimagining" of Psycho? Can I get the sequel rights to the Jessic McClure follow up, "Girl in a Well II", which finds the girl a 34 year old failed actress that is turning tricks in South Hollywood while giving hand jobs for crack after Yanni concerts in the Hollywood Bowl?

Wow, Lord, it sure sounds like you hate remakes...

    by obsd

Which is fine and all, but comparing a bunch of studio execs who don't have an original thought in their head and just want the fastest way to make a buck to a bunch of 12 YEAR OLD CHILDREN who were so inspired by a movie that they wanted to re-create the experience for themselves is a little insane. You might want to watch the Raiders Remake for yourself to see the kind of dedication these kids had. Besides, it wasn't a "remake" (implying that they took the basic idea, then gave it their own "spin" on it) so much as a complete reverse engineering, then re-creation of the original film. It was truly the only shot-for-shot remake ever, (Psycho dosen't count because Janet Leigh never showed her tits and Norman Bates dosen't jerk off in the original. Plus, it sucked) but what's more important is, even after almost 20 years, the enthusasium of the kids is infectious and it taks the viewers right back to the feelings we had when we first saw Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Plus, it's cool to see how they're going to film each scene on no budget.

I meant "to Branagh for Hamlet"

    by jupstin

  • May 10, 2005 12:24:12 PM CDT

    No offense jupstin....

    by obsd

But that's kind of a bad analogy. Seeing some of the stage direction must have been added in Branagh's "Hamlet". I don't think the Christ imagry was in Shakespear's version, but Branagh had it in spades. Plus, I don't think Kenny-boy just went down to the local bookstore, grabbed a copy of Hamlet and started shooting. If you read a Shakespear play, there is no stage direction whatsoever, apart from "eners", "exits", and "dies", so stuff must have been added for the screenplay. Therefore it's "adapted".

    The Reason It's Cool:

    by stlfilmwire

The reason I want to see it because it was started by a bunch of 11 year olds. During their 6 years of shooting, the recreated every freaking shot... (remember that scene underneath the truck)... give them a break. The filmmakers may or may not be terds today, but I think any 11 year old with the balls to remake something that big has my vote. I'm just glad that kids have that fire to film something -- regardless if it is a remake.

    by jupstin

...But it's still an irritating nomination. And, in any case, I forgot that he didn't win the award. It was kind of a bad year for adaptions in any case. Sling Blade makes me want to slit my wrists, but only after The Crucible makes me want to slit my throat. Fortunately, Trainspotting convinced me not to down a bottle of Asprin...

    There is no debate here.

    by one9deuce

When a Hollywood Studio remakes a movie, they are doing it for MONEY. When a bunch of kids remake a movie, they are doing it for LOVE OF THE MOVIE. Big difference. Also, when I check back to these talkbacks, I read them in reverse order. So when Slappy Jones says: "Oilcanboyd is the funniest person to have ever posted anything here ever", that is some seriously huge build-up to how hilarious his posts are going to be. Except that they wouldn't have been all that funny even without build-up. OilCanBoyd(great user name BTW), you flogged the "joke" twice too many times. It wasn't funny enough to spend three posts on. KyleKrane, I can't believe you are STILL pimping your Dracula remake. There should be a statute of limitations on that shit. It has been a couple of years now, make something original and new.

I missed the epilogue here: so what did happen to these kids?

    by commando cody

I know there was some article about them (Vanity Fair was it?), but did they actually go on to DO any other type of filmmaking or just give up on it altogether? Did they turn into adult dicks? If it's the latter -- and they do make a movie about them as kids -- you can certainly bet the "we grew up to be dicks part" gets completely whitewashed in an ultra saccharine Hollywood way.

    by tombseye

Uh no. Hey, I'm sure the guys' who did this were inventive and did great work and I'm sure the extras were easy to get for all the Egyptians digging and the Nazi soldiers running around, but, in the words of Roger Ebert (who still seems a bit lost without ol' Siskel to kick around), why remake a great film? I could see these guys getting hired to make a movie of their own IF it's all that. Still though, haven't heard much from the Blair Witch guys of any notable worth and they didn't even do a remake. Just a not scary "realistic" horror film. Not to digress. I just wanna see Harrison Ford with Karen Allen, and not Mrs. Spielbergo, go up against the Soviets in the 50s before Harrison can't dye anymore hair and Karen becomes a grandmother. Now they had chemistry, while Harrison and Mrs. Spielbergo were not so chemically explosive.

Maybe it's cool, maybe it's a waste of time. I think it's silly to declare all remakes good/bad, when there have been some of each. Personally, I think this sounds more fun than seeing a new Indy flick.

    by slamdancin' ewok

No, really, I am. But in my version all the characters will be played by Gary Coleman. See, my theory is that the whole thing is really just happening in Andrew McCarthy's mind, so one actor is a really all you need. That, and Coleman works really, really cheap now.

    Gus Van's Psycho

    by kaptron

Gus Van Sant spoke at a film class I took in Berkeley a few years back (right around Gerry and before Elephant), and fielded lots of questions, the most memorable being, "why the $%*! did you remake psycho?" (in so many words) and "did matt damon and ben affleck really write good will hunting?"

To the first, he answered "because at that time the studio was willing to let me do whatever the hell I wanted to do, and I wanted to try it." Not necessarily the most justified reasoning, but interesting. To the second, of course he said "yes"... although the most recent episode of Family Guy had an interesting take on the situation.
