AICN CONTEST: Celebrate STAR WARS! Win your own Master Replicas LIGHTSABER!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with one helluva geeky contest for you. Nothing spells nerd quite like owning your own replica lightsaber and if that is missing from your life, then read below and take a stab at this contest.
I was contacted by the good folks at Master Replicas, known the world over for their huge assortment of prop replicas, most notably highly detailed lightsabers, although they were pretty big for having the Pulse Rifle from ALIENS a while back... God, that was a cool lookin' piece of hardware!
Anyway, while the good folks refused (politely) to send me everything in their catalogue, they did say they wanted to give away one of the lightsabers from their Force FX line. Given the choice of Anakin's saber from SITH, Luke's saber from TESB or Vader's lightsaber from TESB to give away, I picked Vader's saber. Anakin's saber (which is given to Luke, so it's essentially the same design) is a bit plain, but Vader's lightsaber is iconic.
Now the cool thing about this saber is not only in the precise design of the handle, but it actually works... Well, it doesn't cut through old Jedi like a hot knife through butter, but it has an extension that lights up. Coincidentally, I played with one of these sabers a couple weeks ago at a Barnes & Nobel (of all places) and it really brings the kid out in ya'. The lightsaber not only turns on, it ignites from the handle up, instead of flicking on all at once. Add on the movie realistic sounds that react to how you swing the lightsaber around and you got one amazingly cool geek heaven big-boy toy.

This retails for $119, so it's not a cheap piece of hardware. As such, I'm looking for someone extremely creative, with a true, deep down love of STAR WARS.
I'm thinking to celebrate REVENGE OF THE SITH finally looking and feeling like a real STAR WARS movie this contest should be you folks making a Special Edition of THE PHANTOM MENACE or ATTACK OF THE CLONES. I don't want a full movie, but one single still manipulated by you to look and feel more like the Original Trilogy. If that means using whatever photo altering program of your choice to drop in OT characters or props or sets or to manipulate the atmosphere to look like the STAR WARS that most of us grew up with then so be it. That's your call.
I'll be judging on creativity of the scene or characters , the seamlessness of the integration between the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy and just plain geek value. I'm not opposed to a great amalgam of both OT and PT... afterall, that's what REVENGE OF THE SITH comes off as and I think it's a damn good movie. Whatever you think will be the coolest. I'll post the winning picture here after the contest ends...
Speaking of... I don't know how long it'll take Master Replicas to ship the saber, but I'm going to end the contest in enough time to, potentially, get the saber out to the winner in time to show it off to your line pals for the Midnight show of REVENGE OF THE SITH.

I need your submission no later than 10am (CST) Saturday the 14th (like the movie, funny ain't it?) That's this upcoming Saturday, so get them pics ready.
JPGs preferred. Keep the file sizes to 100k or less, please, or my mailbox will revolt against me and I might start losing submissions. If you send me a ridiculously sized file it'll be deleted. Include your Name and a non-PO Box shipping address in case your entry is the winner. I don't want to throw out the best picture because you forget to include your address.

Obi Wan's from ANH is the coolest. Looks like Luke's from ROTJ. The TPM sabres are the worst. Even in the movies they looked plastic with big red buttons.

I, too, saw this lightsaber at Best Buy and it looked very pink, though I think that may have had to do with the lighting in the store. I'd imagine that it would look effing awesome in a dim room.

...one of the many problems of the PT is that it constantly tries to appease the fans with little jokes, cameos, etc from the OT. It makes the SW universe feel small and takes away a lot of the sense of wonder from the story. So making some kind of amalgam of the OT and the PT seems a little contradictory to the intent of improving upon TPM/AotC. I suppose there are other things you could do to improve them (taking an obvious screen crap of a scene containing Jar-Jar and editing him out, for example), but mostly it seems like they'd be more subtle and unlikely the win because of that.

There used to be a limited production Pulse Rifle replica kit available here in Japan that was based around an "airsoft" Thompson submachine gun. The original Pulse Rifles used in the movie "Aliens" were built over real Thompsons. The kit that I saw had a working LED counter and fired 6mm airsoft plastic pellets in single-fire or full-auto mode. For those of you not familiar with airsoft guns, they're down-to-the-last-detail accurate replicas of real firearms that fire 6mm plastic pellets at up to 500 ft./sec. The replicas of semi-auto pistols even have "blowback" slides that cycle when fired to chamber a new round.

Yep. I'll keep tying. Enjoy your saber. It is very cool. A friend of mine has two MR Sabers and we tested them out last week. Most impressive build quality. The blade is very bright and the sounds are excellent. Do not believe people when they say the DV saber is pink. That only happens when the batteries are low or the ambient light is just too bright. Oh you are in for a real treate mate.

Thanks, it is just the planet then. Good to know for future reference. Further query about the MR Force FX Sabers, does any one know how resilient they are to impact? For example when swinging them to hear the different Sound Effects, how fragile are they if they hit something?

I do not refer to a Gas Giant as in a star - rather a Jovian or Gas Planet.

They will react to impacts. They have a tough outer shell and the glas inner tube. These are fairly pricey itmes to replace. However, they can be easily changed. I should stress that they should not be used for more than gentle interaction. Not for any mock fights. It's difficult to resist swing it around and start duelling with them though as the sound is very cool. Obviously don't try and thwack - just tap firmly.

Yeah, I know you meant the planetary version (I don't think stars are referred to in that manner anyway, there are red giants and such, but never heard of a gas giant). I always got the impresion Cloud City was built on repulsors, and not actually orbiting, but that is probably just a technicality. Has it been covered in the expanded fiction to describe its mechanisms?

The sabers are very durable. I don't understand it though, because the instructions for care say never to strike anything with it, yet there is a built in sound effect for when you strike it against stuff. You have to hit it really hard for it to make a noise, so i would say they are very durable. I would love to put battery acid all over the blade so when i hit people with it it actually burns them!

the blobs are all I added. I couldn't screen grab my dvd so I just used an official wallpaper from starwars.com I figured it still qualified as a still from episode 1.

I played around with the vader model of the force fx light saber at best buy today. Pretty sweet little toy.

I think it came out pretty cool. I captured the images from the dvd's. It took me a while to get the lighting right. I had to redo the lightsabers cuz the originals looked real crappy and I added the x-wing in the background. I have the Vader one, I bought it at Borders sometime last year. I love it, very cool device it is. It looks absolutely amazing in the dark, sounds great, and when the batteries are full power, the motion sensor is dead on to make the idle hum sounds.

I want star destoryers, AT-ATs, or at least something that looks more primative than OT technology. I think it would have been cool to show the x-wings in the PT, kind of to show that the rebel alliance has to use old beat up ships while the empire gets new ties. Anyway, hope everyone likes the pics. I worked hard on them and had fun.

Yeah man, it's been cool to see all of them posted so far, yours fucking rules. I already have the saber they are giving away, so I passed my ideas on to a friend and he created it, hopefully he can get the saber so we can duel and make asses out ourselves in public. I drink too much to spend time with Photoshop, but he had the time and I think he did a great job with my idea. The only other idea I could think of was to have the Falcon taking off from Tattoine in a still from Ep I, but I thought that to be a bit lame.

Thanks, drunkenone. I started another one but didn't come close to finishing it in time. I had an AT-ST wreaking havoc in the Naboo hangar bay from Epsiode I, with the Death Star's walls and textures replacing the background. The Vader saber looks really sweet -- my girlfriend gave me one of those lame plastic kiddie sabers that they sell at toy stores. I'd love to have the Master Replicas FX version!

Cool man, that sounds awesome, even though unfinished, I'd love to see it if you could upload it. Am I wrong, or is this the most civil/supportive Talkback on this entire site? And the Vader saber is damn sweet, that whole pink shit people were talking at the beginning, is only because of a fully lit room, dime the lights and it's a beautiful peice of work. Feels great, almost dead on accuracy of the hilt, feels wonderful. If only they had this when I was a kid.

Here's my seriously unfinshed one -- this one requires a lot more work. I think that looks ok. I don't really think this is an art contest though, so no worries. I think it's going more for the idea and concept behind it. At least that's what I'm hoping for, I hate to see a great idea go down the drain just 'cause someone didn't have the best Photoshop skills.

I wanted to get the feeling of the original films. I always loved the team work that the main characters had, so I created an image that cloud show the same togetherness. I even placed JarJar in the image because before I saw episode I, I pictured him as a Chewbacca kind of character; a little odd, but a great friend and fighter. In the new films I missed Master Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn as a ghost; the same way Obi Wan used to show himself up infront of Luke. thedrunkenone-- yeah, I won the first trivia contest. Master Replicas responded to my email and said that they were shipping the lightsaber out on Friday, so I'm hoping to have it tomorrow or the next day... And yeah, I was also thinking that this is the most civil talkback I've ever read...!!!

That's damn awesome, you will enjoy the saber very much. You will find yourself waking up feeling the need to piss, go piss, then think to yourself, "I have a MR saber, it's dark." Then you will light it up over and over watching the light come from the hilt up, and watch it go down, and you'll swing it all around just to hear how the motion sensors pick up the movements and make the sounds of the movements.

I got my saber in December or January at Borders, I got the display model (only one they had left for $90). It takes 6 AA batteries, and for being a display model and me playing with it alot, still haven't had to change batteries. I do notice the motion sensors do not work on low batteries, but when I got it, they were dead on. It's a very cool thing to own.

As I've pointed out long ago, and finally a couple people agree, this is probably the most civil/supportive Talkback in the recent history of AICN. And to help promote that, I, personally would like to thank all that have posted their pics for this contest. Apparently none of us on this have won, but was great to see what people have done. Some may not have been in the spirit of the contest, but were a wonderful thing to see for us geeks. I hope more start showing up again soon.

I used Photoshop as well. My image may not have been exactly what Quint was looking for but I had fun with it. Removing Jar Jar from the scene was enjoyable. I won the 2nd trivia contest and my lightsaber was shipped on Friday!

This doesn't sound very creative. I've seen more cool stuff in this message board. I guess we'll have to wait a little bit more. I emailed Master Replicas a few minutes after winning the contest. Heard nothing so I emailed them again the next day, politely asking for a confirmation that they received my email. They responded about an hour later and said they were shipping same day.

Love the name, and you're correct on how fun it is to see what everyone came up with. I think I've seen them all that have posted. Not a single one has sucked, all great to see. And is even more awesome making this probably the first talkback in AICN history where there's no assholes posting.

I was recently at Celebration III in Indianapolis and I have to say that Star Wars fans are some of the friendliest people around. I'm not surprised that this talkback is positive, but this is my first time participating in one. Kilerb, thanks for the feedback. I enjoyed all of yours. Fun! Yours was great too, Drunkenone. Not even in the top 20. Damn I'm gutted. It was fun doing it. I hope we get the chance to do it again. This time can we just draw or create from scratch. I'm not sure about the winner but it's what Quint likes. I liked so many of the images everyone has done. I feel like there's a strong following of like minded people out there. Mad as hell, but with a common bond. How about a competition for the TV series? Like get to have a part in it, or design a space ship or set or something?

Is there anyway that you all can combine your efforts and retool every frame in Episode One and transform it into an actual Star Wars movie? I'm fairly confident you all could. There may be hope for an Episode One remake yet.
