UPDATED!Learn How To Get Into The May 26 SERENITY Screenings!!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s all very strange. SERENITY’s not coming out officially until Sept. 30. But in the meantime, Universal is building word of mouth with the weirdest little platform release pattern you ever saw.

Joss Whedon has more:

CRUSHING DISAPPOINTMENT...

...is not in store! Good things are coming... to a theater (possibly) near you!

It's Joss, your roving reporter, with another ZOWIE! exclusive(!) hot off the presses! Browncoats Bring Boffo B.O.! Vegas Vibe Very Vivacious! You heard it first here, true believers...

Okay, first of all, being that guy is exhausting. So no more roving and on to the meat of the thing. I just saw the whole cast today (which is in itself a wonderful and rare thing) and we all compared notes on the screenings, the general feeling being: damn. As in, Big Damn. You guys were SO sweet. We all thought it was a grand time. More (or at least just as) importantly, the Uni Brass thought it worked out great too, so... wait for it... there's gonna be more.

You might have heard rumors, but I'm here to confirm. On thursday the 26th the studio is doing another round of hit-and-run screenings, and this time it's not ten cities -- it's twenty. It's another vote of confidence from the studio and another chance for us to say "thanks" to you guys for keeping this all rolling. And most importantly, another chance to run that videotape of me before the movie, looking so tragically sexy.

"Wait a minute! What cities!?!?! Hey, %#$@face, stop talking about how sexy you are (although you are confessedly quite the dish) and give us the info!" Well, I don't actually know. I think we'll be repeating in the cities we've hit and adding 10 new ones. I expect can'tstopthesignal will have the info some time tomorrow, and let the manager-threatening begin! (Or, you know, the ticket buying.) Hopefully one of those cities will be near you, and won't be one where the film breaks and has to start again (heh heh... professional showbusiness... ). I don't know if any of the peeps is gonna be able to come out this time, but if they can they will, and I know Jewel's going somewhere 'cause she was working last time.

That's it! Except to add that Summer and I were pretty overwhelmed last Thurs, and I got the impression everyone else was too. Of course everyone else didn't have to put up with Summer's constant whispering of "I SAVED this film, Hackboy!" or her "surefire" system of winning at craps that had me down six large come the dawn... That girl. Just trouble.

Enough with this post. You guys are beyond swell. Let the party continue.

-j.

that would be why all the screenings sold out in a matter of hours. because no one wants to see it. i said the same thing about sin city and hitchkikers guide, that only fans of the source material would like them. i was wrong and love em or hate em, they made millions, and both had number one runs.

Which is why when they posted 10 screenings about a week ago, every ticket for them sold out in a matter of hours. I bet you these 20 sell out on the first day too. I know I am going to try my best to get a couple tix, even if I have to drive to Austin to see it.

    by aerob

That's what it should do if most of the people who bought DVDs and watched it when it was on the air go and see it, and many of them multiple times. Beyond that, I hope there's another trailer (I agree this one wasn't very marketable) to get the general public interested. Besides, there isn't crap coming out around September, so Serenity has a clear window to box office dominance (I think it's pretty clear that people will go see movies no matter what, and they'll flock generally to the one advertised the most).

No- He's right. Only Whedonites will see this flick.

    by zerocorpse

I can tell you, as a non-Whedonite, and a non-fan of Buffy that when I saw the trailer for this, I could only roll my eyes. I dislike Whedon's forced, snarky, lame dialogue, and before you say it: Yes, I've watched MANY episodes of Buffy from every season, but I still hate it. I also watched two episodes of FIREFLY and thought it was sub-par, derrivative, and just as lame as Buffy. The theater full of people also sort of snickered at the trailer, and some said "Isn't that the show they cancelled? Why would anyone make a movie out of it?" so YES, the fanbase (25 or 25,000) are the only ones who will see it. They may see it 10 times each, but they won't be enough to make it worthwhile. I certainly wouldn't waste my money or time on this crapfest. In fact, you could offer me a free screening, and I'd probably find something better to do with my time- Like clipping my toenails or scraping gum off my shoes. "Box office dominance"??? Are you Whedonites so deluded that you really think such a thing? Firefly will get the fanbase, and the Whedon devotees, but the general public will all roll their eyes and look at you like you're idiots for giving Joss Whedon your money. Hey, I'm not telling you that YOU can't enjoy it, but you're crazy if you think people who aren't rabid Whedon fans are going to pay to see his weak efforts.

Just because you were exposed to Whedon's stuff and happened not to like it, doesn't mean there aren't countless people who haven't been exposed to it and yet would love it. I know that personally everyone I have introduced to his shows has ended up falling in love with them. Anyway you are welcome to your opinion, we'll see how it turns out in September. Still, my point stands: this is the biggest movie coming out around that time, and people tend to go see something regardless of what it is (when was the last time you saw a #1 box office movie that did less than $15 mil opening week).

    by commando cody

Yeah, except those "run" were more like crawls that lasted exactly one week, the week they opened. After that, the immediate slide began. And in the case of SIN CITY that wasn't good news since in week 2 business then dropped off by a whopping 50%. This whole notion of "opening at number one" is vastly overrated and simply a bragging rights thing. So unless you're a studio head (or corporate stockholder) with a vested interest in how a movie does, being able to brag that it opened at number one is meaningless. All told, every filmmaker would rather have the James Cameron TITANIC effect at work -- a movie that opens fine, but week after week after week it not only sustains its business, but the weekly box office tallies actually go UP and not down. THAT'S when you know you have a sustaining hit.

    by trienco

At this point I wouldnt want to try and predict if Serenity will do better over time thanks to good word of mouth or do bad from the start and not really recover. The trailer sure is problem, as it's targeted at the wrong crowd. Someone at the screening mentioned how the majority of people was around 30-50. In general the fanbase seems to be a completely different age bracket from other scifi. At least someone reported Jewel saying that there will be more trailers concentrating on different aspects of the movie. So chances are that after the scifi space action trailer there might be comedy, romance, mystery and whatnot trailers. And maybe without that Buffy/Angel stuff, because it's really hard to hold some peoples attention on the trailer once they read this.

    Sin City

    by shan

These are mostly guesses but Sin City I think has grossed about $70 million in the US, this sort of film would do less so overseas, at a stab, say $30 million. Where I think it will make a lot of money is in the rental and sales of mainly DVDs, it seems like one of those films that will lend itself very well to that market. Versus a supposed budget of $40 million, I'm sure it will turn enough of a profit to a) justify making it and b) at least one sequel (I haven't seen the movie and am not familiar at all with the source material). As for Hitchhiker's, it's going to maybe make between $50-$60 million domestic and maybe a similar amount overseas I guess. I guess the question is how much in the way of long term survival this series given the split reaction of the viewing audience (about 50% positive and 50% deeply negative if straw polls on these talkbacks were any indication).

    Question

    by riz

Does the money from these screenings count towards the box office figures? I know it won't be THAT much anyway, but every little bit helps, right?
Also, The_ZeroCorpse, your lack of logic is frightening. You dislike Whedon/the trailer = everyone else in the world who doesn't already like/know Whedon will also dislike the film...? You wish. The fact of the matter is that everybody I've shown Firefly to, Whedon fans and non-fans alike, have loved it. Countless Firefly flans have had similar results. Most people who don't post on the cynic magnet that is aintitcool have liked the trailer.
And that "Isn't that the show they cancelled? Why would anyone make a movie out of it?" part to your strory is the worst, most blatant lie I've EVER seen on the net.

Most People That Like Firefly Are Not Whedonites.

    by the outlander

People assume that the audience that watches Firefly and have buys the DVDs are the same audience that watches Buffy and Angel, but this is quite untrue. Even though there is an overlap between the Buffy/Angel audience and the Firefly audience I think you will find that for the most part these two audiences are quite different. So to me the whole argument that the only people that will see Serenity are Whedonites simply does not hold water. Firefly has a very broad appeal and with positive word of mouth it should do extremely well on DVD and very well at the Cinema. To not understand this shows a complete ignorance of Firefly

To avert being slammed by the fanbase, let me point out that I liked the series and bought the dvds and plan to see the movie when it comes out (finished, not these preview versions) ... but ... I thought the trailer was extremely disappointing. On the basis of the trailer, I would not go to see this movie. It didn't excite me. It didn't interest me. It made the film look amateurish. I suggest pulling it and getting one of Lucas' editors to cut a new one. He at least knows how to make a good trailer. (I also suggest removing the Buffy/Angel credits, though you might want to leave Joss' name in there.)

    by daddy tones

Not just 'likes' it, or would 'watch it if it's on', but actively becomes a Firefly fan. Most people see 2 or 3 episodes before they become obessesed with it. I've seen things you'll never have dreamed of. Sane men, men with dignity and respect, watching this show and suddenly becoming a Whedonite. Firefly is show with SOUL. 24 may be more exciting, but it's vapid and soulless and doesn't grab you emotionally. Lost is bloody brilliant - but that's mostly in the mystery and questions posed in every episode. Firefly is a character-based show - all the episodes are based on the characters situations, rather than a separate plot which has nothing to do with the characters. That's what gets us emotionally involved and that's why it's loved so much. Buffy perfected the idea that characters should always be integral to the monster-of-the-week plot, and Firefly continues that trend. Just like with all of Joss Whedon's show, the only people who don't dislike them, are the ones who ain't never seen them. Got that?

    by daddy tones

Remember, getting a big opening week and a Number 1 spot are Universal's responsibility. It's their job to get this film known and hyped beyond belief. So far they've done a mixed job with it (the screenings are a fantastic idea, the trailer mentions Buffy and Angel which will drive people away). The second week is upto Joss: if it's a good film, PEOPLE WILL TALK ABOUT IT. And they'll even go watch it again with their friends. Remember: this film has a large dosage of comedy - and comedy is ALWAYS funnier when you're watching it with friends. The idea of these test-screenings is a fantastic way to promote the film - the test screenings were already mentioned in an article in the Boston Herald. What's more, the rabid fans will go out and out to get their friends and family to see it - not even Star Wars has that kind of rabidness. On top of that, Hitchhikers was CRAP!! It was childish, and unfunny, British, and nonsensical, and featured no A-List actors. And it managed to do brilliantly. SERENITY WILL BE A HIT. Trust me, kids.

It sucks! It's great! It'll tank! It'll flourish! It gets boring guys. Why don't we just all sit around the campfire and play nice. This whole fighting thing has become retarded. We sit around and argue about pointless shit, does anyone really care all that much? I doubt it. If you like the film, cool, wait for it to open. If you hate the film, cool, get the hell out of the talkback. The negative posts force me, and I'm sure others, to defend the movie, causing us to like it even more. The uber-positive (liars, mostly, though that goes the same with the uber-negative) just cause people to swing in opposite directions. When someone says "Firefly is the greatest show ever, and the film is the greatest film ever." It's obviously not true, they even know that and it throws me into the "I'm hating this" attitude. When I see a negative comment, it throws me into the "I have to defend this" attitude. It's the most violent gear shift in my short (20 some odd years) history. I mean, Jesus, you all look like idiots. Just calm down and wait for the flick to come out.

The problem with the SERENITY trailer....

    by endlessmike

...is that it makes the film look like a generic, hackneyed, Star Wars rip-off. The next trailer really needs to show a little more of the characters (which is, in my opinion what truly sets FIREFLY apart from other sci-fi shows), or this movie will go the way of the TV shows. I only recently watched the show, because when it was on FOX they made it look like just another Star Trek rip-off (and because I generally dislike Sci-Fi shows), but I was blown away when I finally watched it.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't market this film as Hollywood Bullshit! Market it for what it is -- a smart story with great characters.

PS. A screening in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill would be the shiznittle-bam-snip-snap-sam!

They cut the trailer to try and appeal to everyone, fans and non-fans alike. It was a decent, action-oriented, suspenseful, sci-fi flavored trailer. Ta da. I know that the movie will be the Firely that I love, so I'm good with it. From the latest numbers that I've heard from Joss and Co., over 310,000 of the Firefly DVD box sets have been sold. That's a little more than a fanbase of 25, Mr. Boyd. Also, to Shan, open the boxed set now and watch it. I guarantee that your appetite for watching things on TV will be rekindled.

  • Star Trek. Cancelled show becomes new movie, starts to take off. Though the process was accelerated this time because the Firefly fans didn't have to wait for a SW-sized movie to restart interest in scifi and the DVDs allowed fans to speak with their wallets instead of their pens. And before the bashers come in to talk about how crappy Trek is and it's a failure: A) No, it's not and B) Let's see Firefly be as popular when there's 700 hours of it out there.

    by riz

I myself have got caught up in defending this on here... but there's something we all need to remember: in the grande scheme of things this... a movie. Those who love it? Good for them. Those who hate it? That's okay, too. In the end, who cares? Even the classicest classics that ever classiced don't mean that much to the general public. The same will go for this, no matter how much it's loved or hated.

I mean, sometimes it's fun to joke about Whedon delusions, but c'mon. ROTK won because it had an unbelievable pedigree - NOT TO MENTION - two other totally amazing predecessors. Remember, ROTK's oscars were more of a reward for the whole trilogy than anything else. FOTR was the best of them. Serenity will be hard pressed to make its budget back. Don't get your head wrapped up in the awards season. Jeesh. This is a B-Movie full of B-actors, so unless you think this is the second coming of Star Wars, there is no way this bad boy gets any awards praise.

    This debate is getting repetitive...

    by bonzob22

...but I'll jump in anyway. Sin City had a great trailer, Hitchhiker's did not. The Hitchhiker's trailer looked very weak, playing up the slapstick, and making references only the fans would get. And the movie was only so-so. Yet, it's still gonna make at least 50 million domestic and it still opened at number one. It's also going to make even more internationally. Douglas Adams arguably has a bigger fanbase than Whedon, but his original book was writen almost thirty years ago. Many of the people I talked to only had the vaugest recollection of the Hitchhiker's books. Also, Sin City was rated R, restricting the audience that could have seen it, and holding back its box office. Serenity is PG-13. Furthermore, all those of you who are saying the Serenity preview looks like a cheap Star Wars clone are crazy. The preview isn't perfect, but I saw it back to back with the Star Wars preview, and it looked far more interesting - why? Not because the effects were better, the battles bigger, they weren't. No, because the dialogue had some life to it. Some zest. Some wit. Watching this back to back with all that "we give you a place on the council, blah blah blah" usual terrible Lucas dialogue, was a painful contrast. Serenity did remind me of Star Wars - the original Star Wars. Lastly, it's hard to compare this film to any film, as each are different, but what about Hellboy? There's a low budget cult property that mainstream audiences hadn't heard of, with no stars, that made 60 million and is now getting a sequel. What about the X-files movie? There was a movie that made little attempt to appeal to people who hadn't seen the show, and who's previews looked cheap, and it was launched in the summer, against massive 100 million dollar movies, and still made 80 million. Heck, even Chronicles of Riddick, which had a star (of sorts) and was another sci-fi movie based on a cult property, made over 30 million. And that was in the competitive summer season, and it sucked. Serenity, from what we've heard, does not suck. It''ll be released in a fairly uncompetitive month. The trailer we saw is only the teaser trailer, there are months of marketing, and at least one new trailer to come. So whatever you think of Joss (I'm a fan of him, but thought Firefly was just okay), it's ridiculous to keep saying the movie will flat out tank. It won't.

  • Fox cancelled FIREFLY before it's time: that's not an injustice we're willing to let slide. The people at Fox will pay, as will every man woman and child associated with Rupert Murdocks Corporation Of Idiocy and False Hope. Fox won the battle...but we can still win the war. We CAN glet the Firefly universe prosper. As Captain Malcolm Reynolds so beautifully said, "We may have been the losing side ...still not convinced it was the wrong one.". The fundamental reason we Browncoats are going mad for Serenity is this: If Serenity is a hit, then the 2 sequels will be made. Simple. This is why marketing, trailers, screeners, and the box-office takings of similar films are so damn important to us. You've got to remember: if Serenity dies, then the entire Firefly universe dies with it. That's a lot of deaths, and a lot of unhappy people - are you sure you want that on your conscience? So do the right thing, support the underdog, go and watch the movie at the cinema 5 or 6 times, and then make your family and friends watch it, write about it to your local paper, post about it on the internet, write Thank You letters to Universal and Joss, put up your own marketing flyers on lampposts, write songs about it and sing it to passers by, hand out leaflets explaining what it is, organise group trips to the cinema, have Firefly themed parties and try to convert people into Browncoats, put up the posters on your walls, sign the petitions, buy the DVD for yourself, buy another copy to lend to friends, buy the merchandise, the action figures, preorder multiple copies of the DVD on Amazon, contribute to the fundraising ad we're doing in Variety to publicise it, and then do it all over again. Because if Serenity is a flop, it'll be OUR FAULT. Us: the Browncoats, the loyal Indepencence soldiers, the Whedonites, the Buffylovers...we may have different colour skins and speak many different languages, but we all strive for the same goal: we wish that Our universe has one last day of glory. It could still happen. A renewal of the TV show is no longer an impossibility. For tomorrow the Sun will rise...and who knows what the tide shall bring?

Everyone seems interested in what Joss Whedon's income is. Is he handing out check's or something to the browncoats? Because rabid is rabid, but flat out retarded is just scary. Are you aware that it has already been greenlit for not one, but TWO sequels? Apparently, the box office it made was more than enough for the studio to have made a profit. Serenity will be the same. It may not make $100 million, but it will make it's money back and be considered a success, especially since it only cost $30 million to make.

It was beyond rape, beyond murder, beyond mutilation..there ain't no word in the 'verse for they did to our beloved. Not showing the pilot, and completely not airing 3 episodes, showing the rest in the wrong order, giving it a dead end slot. All I'm saying is, Justice WILL be served. His name is Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Soldier of the Armies of the Independance, General of the true ship Serenity, loyal servant to the true emperor, Joss Whedon. Father to a murdered ship, husband to a murdered show. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

    A message to Joss Whedon

    by daddy tones

I wrote to you once, Joss, listing the four chief virtues. Wisdom, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance. As I read the list I knew I had none of them. But I have other virtues, Mister Whedon. Ambition, that can be a virtue when it drives us to excel, such as in the forums. Resourcefulness. Courage to stand up against naysayers. Perhaps not on the real world but there are many forms of courage. Devotion, to my Firefly, to you, and to Buffy. But none of my virtues were on your list. Even then, it was as if you didn't want me for your son. Take me, Joss, take me to be your son. I searched the faces of the gods for ways to please you, to make you proud. One kind word, one reference to me in your shows, would've been like the sun on my heart for a thousand years. What is in me that you hate so much? I love you, Joss, I truly, deeply love you.

Okay, I'm irritated now. I saw the original posting from Whedon this morning. I've been checking back at cantstopthesignal.com all morning. I literally saw the info change about 10 minutes ago. I called the theatre immediately (the AMC1000 in San Francisco) only to find that the show had sold out already! How is this remotely possible?

All I can guess is that people called the theatre directly when the screenings were hinted at this morning. I don't think this is right. I don't think that the theatre should have sold tickets before the event was officially announced.

blocktek: It's "possible" because the Browncoats (at browncoats.serenitymovie.com) were simply reloading Fandango and MovieTickets.com right as they went online and communicating via message boards there for the links to online purchasing. (Some decent benefits to membership in cult phenomena, I suppose.) I believe cantstopthesignal.com didn't actually update until all 20 cities were online, but apparently that process for Fandango and MovieTickets is not activated at a discrete time -- it gets entered and becomes available....so most were Sold Out even before cantstopthesignal got refreshed. Fandango apparently even crashed somewhere in this madcap process. ;-)

Do you actually think this will DECREASE the box office ratings at the official release? 7500 people are LESS THAN 1% of the opening week audience. What's more, these people will come back at release time and watch it another 5 times. Universal have pulled an absolute gem out of their pocket with this word-of-mouth trick they've pulled. EVERY ONE of those 7500 people will promote it to their friends and family and hype it beyond belief in real life and the net - and there's DEFINATELY going to be more screenings soon. Frustrating for those not living on the net, but at least the execs can go straight into surprise mode again, when half the screenings are sold out before they make an offical announcement and/or actually update their ticket site. With 30 screenings and the handful of single screenings, how many tickets have been sold now? 15000+? Not THAT bad for a movie still 5 months away. Look at the facts: Sci Fi movies, when they're GOOD, tend to do really, really well (eg The Matrix). This movie is GREAT (it's been unanimously loved by Browncoats and Peasants alike). The critics will LOVE IT (Buffy, Angel, and Firefly are some of the most critically acclaimed tv shows of all time). The marketing is ingenious (the test screenings are a brilliant way to get it fame) - and Universal are putting a lot of money behind this. The timing is PERFECT (no movies up against it, and it's post Star-Wars when people realise how good Space sci-fi can be). It's managed to sell out 5000 tickets before they were even announced. It's on the back of one of the most popular TV DVD's ever. All I'm saying is, Titanic better look out, because Serenity is going to surprise everyone by how popular it is.

    by dr_dreadlocks

"At an average of $10 a ticket that's $500,000 Serenity has made already, 5 months before release." That is probably some of the fuzziest math I've ever seen, that reads around $50,000 slim. Don't forget travel costs for the stars, I doubt they pay their own way, renting out the theatre, alternate costs, etc. The film isn't exactly breaking even based on this, it's just for "word of mouth". But the fact that all they're getting is the rabid fan base first, it's goign to be hard since no one is technically partial to the subject matter. You want to be ballsy, buy tickets for family in the early screening and get their legit response. Not "OMG THEY LOVED IT!" because, well, it's a pretty easy tag to know if someone is lying when they say that. To be honest this isn't a huge deal, its a film with pretext and a small, strong, internet fan base. It's not like this thing is going to open wide, and every ticket in the world will be sold out in the first ten minutes for two weeks straight. The fan base is still flocking to see it, probably twice. But I believe they'd watch "Paint Drying, The Movie" Written and Directed by Joss Whedon. I like the guy, I like the show, but seriously, this shit about it being bigger than The Matrix, or Star Wars is lying. You're lying to yourself, and if you're joking, which I hope a percentage of you are... It's just sad to sustain something like this. Cult films remain that for a long time unless it has PERFECT timing. Universal might do another, even wider, release, and might even bump up the release date. But when they drop a film like Serenity into a competetive Summer, it'll get crushed by all around it. September is a demi-smart move since the lack of competition, but Universal will never trust this movie no matter how much people rave. Simply because they know that the "browncoats" exist, and the "browncoats" will not get the film over the 100 million dollar mark. I know the film will do well, I expect a sequel around the same budget, and I doubt a trilogy. But honestly, the lying, pissing, and shitting in this talkback is so scary that I think I've been borne into hell. Honestly, it makes everyone looks like idiots. The uber-positive people really turn off the anti-positive, and even the fence-folk. If you TRULY want to be a browncoat, have a strong and level-headed opinion. Release a review that doesn't just say "OMG TEH GR8TEST SINCE TEH STAR WARZ!!! WHEDON = KING OF MY PANTS!!!!!" Critique the film, point out its inevitable weaknesses, and triumph its strong points. But don't be a fucking geek and call the film the immaculate conception. Really, come on, be honest to yourselves, and everyone else. That is how you help the film, not by shitty rants about how Whedon is God, and how people who dislike him are fools. Like I said, I like the damn guy, and the raving idiots who over-praise are making me hate him. It's getting scary out here, stop the damn war, and think before you type.

Striking story! But now, the people want to know how the story ends. Only a glorious climax will do. And what could be more glorious than to challenge the Operative himself in the great theatre of our dreams? My friends, I propose Serenity be shown on the screen they call IMAX. No longer should the IMAX be home to bland short movies and tedious documentaries. We are entering a new age in motion pictures. The cinema needs to evolve accordingly.

What a surprise, the first 10 tickets for Vegas are already on ebay. Now, why would I rather see him eat these tickets than having 10 more fans at the screening?

    Reply to Talkback

  • I would understand 4-6 weeks before, but not 5 months. Isn't that a little too long a time to keep the buzz going? Plus, the general public will not want to look forward to this movie because it opens after the end of Summer. No one looks beyond Summer with any kind of anticipation. Which is why big movies open in December, because everyone looks forward to Christmas. But seriously, I believe that these screening have a purpose other than to generate word-of-mouth. Obviously they are test screenings to tweak the movie, so what you see in the screening most likely will not be what you see on Septmeber 30th. But how critical will rabid Firefly/Whedon fans be? Constructive criticism would be better found among the unsuspecting public who do not know what film they are screening until they see it. My guess is that maybe Universal is having trouble getting theatres to book Serenity. Universal could be using these screenings to show theatres how popular this film will be once released and get them to book it on more than one screen. I'm sure when Sith is released the local Decaplexe will have it on at least 5 screens the first weekend. Perhaps Universal is looking for those same theatres to show Serenity on at least 2 or 3 its first weekend.

The problem is, Dr, people who don't like Whedon ARE fools.

    by daddy tones

There's no 2 ways about it. People who don't like Whedon are those that have never seen an episode of one of his shows that was written and directed by Whedon. Fact. Those that HAVE seen an episode made by Whedon and still dislike him, are mere fools. Fact. Five thousand of his fans are out there in the freezing open. Three thousand of them are driving hundreds of miles to reach his film. Two thousand have paid extortionate prices for him. I will not believe they travelled and paid for nothing. You have the right to detest Whedon; do not presume you have the right to tell his men that they are fools for following his gospel. I think he knows what Storytelling Magic is. Conjure magic for us and we'll be distracted from the alleged slow kicks and TV-like sets. Take away our show and still we'll roar. The beating heart of of the Browncoats is not the spectacle of the CGI, it's the integrity of the characters. He'll bring us but 2 more hours of glory - and we will love him for it.

Just chiming in to say that like others, I find Buffy and Angel to be near-unwatchable with the snarky self-conscious dialogue. I gave Buffy a try on a couple of occasions and it just didn't take. I've also seen the footage of Joss at conventions and he sure seems like an egomaniac. NEVERTHELESS, I found "Firefly" to be enormously entertaining. There's a bit of the snarky dialogue, yes, but the well-articulated universe and especially the compelling characters make up for it. Long story short, I'll be at the Boston screening the 26th with the tickets I bought today after constantly monitoring fandango for four hours instead of doing any work at all. Thank god for my laid-back job.

Why Hitchhiker's and Sin City don't apply

    by theta

First of all, was "Sin City" a juggernaut? Nope. But it's on track to hit $75 million plus, and considering it was based on material that was really, really cult, that's not a good argument against "Serenity." "Firefly" DVD sets have inarguably sold better than Sin City graphic novels. "Hitchhiker's" was undone by two things: Middle America and teenagers don't have much of an appetite for British humor, and the fans proved what a bunch of pedantic idiots they were by bitching about how their favorite joke didn't make it into the movie and therefore it sucks. Most of the whining stems from a simple basic problem; they don't fucking understand film comedy. Note to anybody who said the following, "The setup was there, but not the punchline!": THE PUNCHLINE WAS THERE, IT WAS SIMPLY VISUAL, NOT VERBAL. THERE IS NO REASON, FOR EXAMPLE, TO HAVE THE VOGON TELL US ARTHUR GOT THE POEM WRONG AND THAT HE'S GOING TO STUFF HIM IN THE AIRLOCK AND SHOOT HIM INTO DEEP SPACE WHEN THE VOGON CAN ACTUALLY...STUFF...HIM IN THE AIRLOCK AND SHOOT HIM INTO DEEP SPACE. Sorry for the yelling, but I've been explaining this, repeatedly, on LiveJournal and discovering Hitchhiker's fans are not only pedants but completely clueless to certain things like the basics of film comedy and composition. Anyway, I think we can safely assume that people are not going to be sniping the color of Jayne's T-shirt or being quite as granular as our dearly missed Alexandra DuPont. So that's not a factor. I don't think it'll make $100 million, but I think it will be a solid hit and encourage Universal to make more.

So Sin City is immediately uncomparable. Hitchhikers was practically ametuerish, very British (and I'm a brit), and not that funny. But the MAIN POINT is that Hitchhikers had no A-listers. It had Mos Def and John Malkovich in a small (and completely pointless) role. THAT'S why there's hope for Serenity.

Firefly Trailer Makes The Movie Look Lame

    by jpbellavance

I saw the trailer and am dissapointed with all of the bad one liners they showed. In the context of the movie they will probably be funny but as 2 second sound bytes it made the movie seem like just another cheesy sci-fic flop. It looked like a highly polished made for tv movie. I have the DVD's and have watched them with my wife countless times. I will also definitly see the movie. But I think they threw a wet blanket on capturing new audeinces using that god awful trailer.

Trilogy Tuesday for LOTR fans - I got 4 tickets to the Gateway in Austin for that one and could have made nearly $2000 if I had sold them all on eBay. But, me being a true fan AND in charge of the Line Party, I made the right choice and didn't sell. Now that I am in LA I am super pissed that Serenity is not screening anywhere near here for the SECOND time. I guess Joss (or the studio?) did that on purpose to prove a point or something? seems kinda silly though - NY and LA are the best places to get word of mouth going... oh well, guess I'll have to go buy the DVD set of Firefly and suck it up until Sept. And for all you naysayers out there, you WILL be eating your words when this movie kicks so much ass that it hurts. I called the success of Pirates of the Caribbean when all you Hulk fanboys were like "there's no way it will beat The Hulk.. blah blah blah" - and I'm calling it again - this movie will be the second most popular movie this year (second to ROTS of course). And for those of you who will still refuse to see it no matter how many people tell you how great it is, I feel sorry for you.
