Agent Smith putting on the mask in V FOR VENDETTA' Whoa!

Published at:  May 08, 2005 11:59:00 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an interesting change-up in the V FOR VENDETTA cast list. It appears James Purefoy has left the production and is being replaced by Hugo Weaving. Remember that the character Purefoy was playing always wears a mask, so it's quite possible they will not have to reshoot any of his stuff. God... it weirds me out that they're going for a November 4th release... I'm getting too used to geek movies taking years to make and release!

I love Weaving and am psyched to see what he does in this flick. Perfect voice, great presence... He's an actor's actor and I can't wait to see what he does with his body language! Weaving and Portman. Glory be!

    Weaving is all right

    by aerob

He has a great screen presence, but he also tends to give virtually the same performance in every role. It's not a bad performance, mind you, but it's unique enough that it feels like he's retreading [insert whatever movie you first saw Weaving in here] every time you see him in something else.

    by dr_dreadlocks

Though I don't see the point in replacing him, the role must exist entirely in the dub anyway. Why not replace Purefoy after filming? Or something? I guess this is quicker, but they seem to have different builds. Might actually call for some reshoots and with what I'm figuring is a short schedule, it's going to be a sprint finish. Let's hope it don't suck ass.

    by mattcg

I hear he's quite a prick and tries to fuck everything with an orifice within 100 yards, but I was just curious if anyone knew what he did to merit his firing?

Anyway, who cares? ANYONE could play this role, as long as they're thin and know mime. It's all in the voice, because you never get to see V's face. I pray to fucking GOD they won't change that. I'll buy Agent Smith's voice as V, that's a good match.

    Please, don't fuck it up.

    by cuban pete

The only problem I have with this is Weaving's voice. I really like him as an actor, but his voice is too distinctive. As soon as you hear it, it'll be "Oh, it's Elrond in a mask". V should have one of those 'everyman' voices, where it literally could be ANYONE behind the mask. Not that that matters if they do unmask him, though. Which they shouldn't. But probably will.

No, do Zenith! The whole "we're superhuman and don't give a stuff about anyone else and just want to have fun and get smashed" is a refreshing antitode to all those do-gooder American superheros. That plus fighting Nazis from the 4th Dimension and the Old Ones from the Cthulhu mythos in between rock concerts? How could you lose? (For reference , Zenith and Halo Jones are both from the UK weekly comic 2000AD featuring Judge Dredd).

    by fluffyunbound

Love Weaving, no problem with him as an actor. It's just that every line V has is part of a very bitter, very deep inside joke, told with great theatrical wit. Weaving just always sounds so ponderous to me, even as a border collie. That made him perfect to be Agent Smith or Elrond, but I don't know how good a fit it is here. If they were just going to do dub work anyway, they could have gone the Darth Vader route and gotten Peter O'Toole to dub some younger guy's screen work. He's got the kind of embittered stage voice that would have done quite well. I'll still see it, of course. It's still my most anticipated film of the year. And if Weaving pulls it off it should be a hell of a performance.

There are so many reason why this comic shouldn't be adapted and reading the comic will show you that. First off the pacing of the comic is all wrong for a movie, it just doesn't flow like a movie should. V is not a person but a concept and that will never be fully communicated. It just really makes no sense to make this into a movie, unless you can't come up with original ideas. I like Hugo Weaving, but i don't like when people just make things that people say are cool. They could make it like Sin City, but Sin City was nothing like the comics, it was a great movie, but read the comics and you will see it is completley different. The only thing that is worse than making this is making the Watchmen. If movie companies are desperate to make comic movies, they should make Kingdom Come.

    by osoccophiliax

...remember the ultimatum V gave the people of fascist-downtrodden England? That if they did not buck their ideas up about how they related and dealt with their masters, V himself would arrange a terrible fate for them in one year's time? Did he follow through on that threat? Because the good people of England sure didn't rise up against their cruel masters. Did Alan Moore neglect to work up a suitable payoff to that plot thread, because he was making it all up as he went along? I think so!_____________________________________
If I am wrong about this, please let me know just what V did or planned to do if the English let him down and did not measure up.

    by lobanhaki

Body language is important in a character that doesn't have the benefit of facial expressions. When George Lucas had to replace a sick Anthony Daniels in the C-3PO costume, he ended up having to go back and do it with Anthony, because the movements of the other actor didn't work that well with Anthony's voice.

    Weaving is the Man

    by mafu

Like many talkbackers here, I dig Hugo Weaving's work. I never saw "Priscilla," which is unfortunate, but I've seen almost all of his other films. Surprisingly, one of my favorites was an Aussie film called "The Interview," an R-rated police drama in which Weaving plays a man who could be completely innocent of a certain crime -- the scapegoat of an internal Police investigation -- or he could be guilty as hell and a total psychopath. Weaving is a great addition to "V."

    by kuryakin

To me is perfect for this part. V reminds me of some camp RADA actor with bombs, some kind of psycho Ian McKellen and Weaving can certainly ham it up like that. THE FIERY CHASM FROM WHENCE IT CAME - I love that shit. Plus, his accent in the Matrix movies isn't just him trying to do "American" and sounding weird.I believe he is on record as saying he was trying to capture that weird flat accentless thing that news anchors in North America do, specifically Canadian ones. I reckon he is more than capable of doing whatever accent is required.

I think the Wachowski's will be pretty faithful to the source. Think about it - when they did the girl-on-girl stuff in Bound they got some lesbian porno chick to do those scenes to make them more authentic, they got proper kung fu people in for the Matrix, they seem to be pretty happy to defer to people they consider to be authorities on whichever subjects - from stuff I've seen with them they seem like they would consider Alan Moore an authority on his own story. Read their intro to the Doc Frankenstein comic - these guys know and love comics. I don't see the need to make this movie but I think if it is going to be made, they are the ones to do it.

What do you mean exactly? V for Vendetta was set in a fictional England where nuclear war ravaged the world and although in some ways is based on early 80's Thatcherite Britain it's a story, not relating to our 'universe' at all. You can use your imagination as to what happens next, better yet, write a fanfic. Why not ask the same about every piece or work. Not everything needs a piss poor sequel to explain what happens next, it stands on its own merit because it's just that damn good.

...V promised a reckoning for the people of England if they did not pull themselves together. In fact, there was an entire chapter devoted to this speech that V felt it important enough to go to such great lengths to deliver. This happened just before the mid-point, so you would assume that this was pretty important to the story and that the writers should have had a payoff in mind - not to be delivered in a 'sequel' as per your misapprehension, but in the original book itself. I rather think Alan wrote himself into a corner with that idea, couldn't think of anything V could have done in response to non-compliance, so he just dropped the idea. Which was a waste of a chapter since the idea goes nowhere. You don't seem bothered about that, to say the least, so I don't understand why you even bothered to post. The apathetic 'couldn't give a shit' brigade do strange things, I suppose.

V threatens the people of England with retribution if they don't get rid of their government. Since the government does, in fact, fall, as a result of chaos and anarchy that spreads when V eliminates the surveillance system, there would be no need for V to undertake his retribution. It's not exactly a loose end. I don't see why you think it is one.

    by ribbons

I just this afternoon read an article (now useless) regarding 'V for Vendetta' in SFX Magazine in which James Purefoy talks about all the preparation he did for the role of V; he studied Japanese Noh dramas, kabuki theatre, and discussed the possibilities of using the mask to its fullest effect with designers and acting instructors. It sounded like he was really getting into it, and I admit I would have gotten excited over the things he must have had in mind for his own performance had I not already known that he's since withdrawn from the production. Hugo Weaving is a good actor and a suitable replacement, but barring a miracle, his preparation will probably not consist of the same in-depth research as Purefoy's and the performance will probably suffer for it.
