Published at:  May 04, 2005 7:16:28 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a look at the newest from genius filmmaker Chanwook Park, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. I really dug his SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE and I think OLDBOY is a masterpiece... Park is one of the most exciting filmmakers in the world and below you can see a glimpse of his newest work. Also below we have a translation of the Korean in the trailer, thanks to a an awesome reader. Enjoy!

My personal translation of the dialogue. I'm fluent in Korean. I tried to capture the essence of what was being said as opposed to a literal translation.

Woman 1: (inaudible)

Lady Vengeance: Because I might look too kind........

Title: Kind Ms. Kim-ja

Woman 1: Did you find that guy?

Lady Vengeance: Yeah.

Woman 1: Did you kill him?

Lady Vengeance: Not yet.

Woman 1: Why?

Lady Vengeance: I was too busy.

(montage of clips)

Woman 1: Like saving a dessert for the very end, is that the idea?

Lady Vengeance: Yeah.

    Looks decent

    by macgruder

Looks ok, but I've seen better trailers. I wish there was a little more comprehension in the contextthough. Simply flashing random screenshots from the movie doesnt help me figure out whats going on.

I definitely want to see this though, Park's previous films have all beenamazing.

can we stop calling it sympathy for lady vengeance now?

    by gonzo4560

It's called The Kind Ms. Geum-ja (or some such thing). SFLV was a stupid placeholder title.

No, we can't stop calling it Sympathy For Lady Vengeance

    by beageal

Because where I stand, that really does appear to be the official English title. And where I stand is in South Korea, just outside of Seoul. They've got a big cardboard display of the movie's poster at my local theatre, and while most of it's in Korean, up at the top, in an arch, in English, are the words SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. In fact, it looks a lot like this: http://www.cine21.com/Movies/Mov_Movie/movie_detail.php?s=media&id=9270&pid=60492.

Now my only concern is where in the hell will I be able to find it subtitled in English? I hope I don't have to wait the three months it takes for movies to come out on DVD here.

  • For example, "Windstruck", which was a relatively popular comedy with Jun Ji-hyun, that was the official English title but the Korean title "Nae yojachingurul sogae habnida" translates as "Let me introduce my girlfriend".

I hope she kills Captain Panaka. That cynical, one eyed bastard didnt having anything to offer except lame, depressing one-liners.

about the (inaudible) translation of the trailer

    by justcameby

    Well, just for your information.
    The very first line is something like this;

"Why do you wear that bloody red eye shadow?"

    What's better than OS 9?

    by pencil-man

...and what does pC stand for?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Besides, I thought all of the Oldboy trailers were shit too and that was one of the best movies ever to come out of Asia. Sometimes great movies have shitty trailers and shitty movies have great trailers. You can't judge a movie by a 30-90 second clip with music that's not even in the movie and sometimes even scenes or lines that aren't in the final cut.

I still can't wait to see that fucker and will certainly buy the Korean DVD rather than wait two years for the U.S. release.

    answers to OLDBOY questions *SPOILERS*

    by splbrg75

The guy with the dog was just a suicide jumper whom O.D.S tells his story to. The other dude did what he did to O.D.S. because he felt O.D.S started the rumours that eventually led to his sister's suicide. ...more or less that's the dealio.
