Anchor Bay hits us with two 80s classics on DVD today: LICENSE TO DRIVE and TURK 182!

Published at:  May 03, 2005 2:26:07 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here reminding all my fellow lovers of cheeseball 80s cinema that we have two milestones of the 80s at their best (or worst) out on DVD today courtesy of Anchor Bay.

First up is LICENSE TO DRIVE... Ah, the sophomore film for "The Coreys." This film, about a kid who desperately needs to pass his driver's test after promising to take the hottest girl at his school out (Heather Graham in one of her first roles), is a lot of fun, but is really, really, really trying hard to be at the John Hughes 16 CANDLES level.

The extras on the disc are few, but enough to warrant a look for the casual Coreys fan and a buy for the hardcore... There are separate interviews with each Corey... Feldman and Haim. Corey Haim has grown a tad ugly, unfortunately, but he does poke a lot of fun at himself, so it looks like he's gained some perspective on his life since his glory days. I especially like his admission of having a trouble closing his mouth, so he would always be walking around with his maw gaping open. I never really noticed it until he mentioned it, but then the DVD people did a montage of scenes from LICENSE TO DRIVE where he did indeed have his mouth open, a style that took an easy 10-20 IQ points off his face.

Feldman was more into talking about how much of a bastard he was and how, in retrospect, he really shouldn't have totally ignored the script nor should he have refused to be costumed by a professional, instead picking his own outfit.

Now if only we can get Corey Haim's Me, Myself and I on DVD with a video of him watching his retarded teenage self... that'd be classic.

The disc also has a director's commentary which is, surprisingly, upbeat and entertaining. Nothing life changing, but not a bad listen.

Now, I had never seen TURK 182 until I got the review disc. I actually take back what I said above about this being an '80s cheeseball milestone. This one isn't particularly cheesy, but it does have the taint of the 80s all over it, which is a bonus for me. "State of the art" computers that can create files which you can then put on a (gasp!) floppy disc! hehe

This flick stars Timothy Hutton as a young man who takes on the system, in this case a corrupt Mayor of New York City who made the mistake of insulting Hutton's brother, then made the even worse mistake of making an example out of Hutton's brother, who is near crippled in the process. So, Hutton gets revenge by whipping out the spray paint and embarrassing the Mayor every chance he gets, taking on the pseudonym TURK 182 (Turk being his brother's nickname and 182 being his fireman badge number).

The movie also stars Kim Cattrell in her BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA era... Good God, she's so damn hot in this film. Peter Boyle is who steals the flick, though, as the thuggish arm of the Mayor.

The movie is directed by Bob Clark, one of my favorite wacko directors. How he goes from CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS and the all time classic BLACK CHRISTMAS to a melodrama like TURK 182 or a family classic like A CHRISTMAS STORY is beyond me, but damned if I don't love him for it. Clark has a commentary on the disc, but the impending release date got to me before I could give it a spin.

Anyway, just thought I'd remind you folks to keep an eye out for these flicks if they float your boat. I'll be back with some sweet set reports and maybe a review of some indie trash that's due for release this month. 'Til then, this is Quint bidding you all a fond farewell and adieu.

So where's that uncut Breakfast Club DVD?

    by shan

Apparently John Hughes has the last copy of the full version in existence. Maybe if they're really nice to him (and possibly pay him enough $), he'll let them copy and sell it.

Oh, come ON. LTD was quite "charming" in its own way, and featured the-then mega-hot Heather Graham as the aptly-named Mercedes, as well as Carole Kane doing her crazy lady (or in this case, preggers mom) shtick. I loved the flick back in tha day, and will welcome it with open arms into my DVD collection - once the price drops significantly at the local Wal-Mart, that is.

    Random Thoughts

    1) I'm kinda surprised that more hasn't been made of the Bob Clark career arc. To go from writing/directing Porky's and A Christmas Story, two absolute classics in their respective genres, to Baby Geniuses 2 is incomprehensible.
    2) Robert Culp is a real BASTARD in Turk 182.

    Thank you.

    Quint, you're nuts!

    by earlhofert

You give up the love to two of the dumbest movies ever made by people with opposable thumbs (and in the case of the Coreys, I'm not so sure even about that) without even mentioning that Anchor Bay is also releasing the immortal "The Entity" today (unless it got bumped to a later date) as well? Too spooky or did it always air past your bedtime?

That movie was another quintessential slice of late-eighties cheese. But it also had a great soundtrack, graphic reminders of Feldman's Michael Jackson period and Meredith Salinger's awesome boobies.
