Cool News
More SIN CITY! Hell yeah! More Sommers MUMMY movies! Hell naw!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some potentially great news and some potentially not great news! Actually, I take that back. Stephen Sommers directing Univeral Monsters hasn't worked out so hot, but I'd actually prefer he keeps making MUMMY movies than try to make another cheeseball FLASH GORDON movie (sans the awesome Queen score that kept the first one living as long as it has already). So, that's good news. What else is good news? More SIN CITY, that's what. All I can say is I want more Marv. A DAME TO KILL FOR! You know you want it!
Anyway, there's more at JoBlo! Get her, Ray!
Well I'm sure plenty of people have passed this along to you already, but in the unlikely chance they haven't thought I would. Joblo is reporting that Stephen Sommers has written a script for The Mummy 3 and plans to start shooting later this year. For the uber cool news, Joblo is also reporting that Robert Rodriguez is planning on filming Sin City 2 and 3 back to back next February, for a release sometime in 2007. They also have a little tidbit on Rodriguez doing a little movie called Conan (relation unknown). Here's the link and keep the great job you guys do on your site.

But I'd really rather not see him do Conan, so I hope that's something else, though the recent news of Milius getting frozen out of his Conan project doesn't bode well.

Can Hollywood PLEASE stopthe hack Suommers?!?!? He is an embarasment to film period.
-
They took the 3 best graphic novels and put them in the movie. I guess they have to write new stuff, and it will probably suck. I know there are other Sin City tales that Miller wrote, but most of them suck. Oh well, maybe he will do a Marv prequel or something cool like that. It won't be nearly as good as the first film, but I guess it's cool they are doing some more.
-
Blame your neighbors for going to see his stupid movies and making the studios rich. He'll continue to make bad movies as long as people support them.
-
He Sommers! Keep your dirty hands of the most awesome culture ever: ancient Egypt, you barbaric commercial fuck! We in Europe aren't making rediculous flicks about Indians, now do we? So @$#% off!
-
Oi Summers! Leave our Monsters Alone. In fact leave everything well alone and do not blight cinema with your presence ever again. Even the excuses of "It's a big dumb event movie, what more do you expect?" do not hold water. His films in theory should be fun, but they just turn out to be boring garbage. Gah!
-
won't that be milking it a bit?.... oh, i forgot... this is hollywood.

MORE SIN CITY YAYE!
-
If so, maybe then To Hell And Back won't be a complete waste. It's easily the worst Sin City story. Well, full length story, anyway. I'd like to see A Dame to Kill For and Family Values, but that's an awful lot of Clive Owen, even if he does have two faces...
-
I'm worried that this may be the kid-friendly re-imagining of CONAN THE BARBARIAN that has been in the works at Warner Bros. for years now. They dumped Milius' KING CONAN script and want to make a kind, gentle, family-friendly PG franchise out of it.
-
C'mon, you know the whole show was inspired by the final scene of Deep Rising.
-
I loved Sin City. It rocked my socks, and it will easily be in my Top 10 at the end of the year. But I also like to think of it as this year's Pulp Fiction, and you don't see QT turning that film into a franchise, do you? Sin City felt like a complete movie, and if I want to return to the world of Marv, Hartigan and Dwight I will get the DVD. And as for the Mummy movies, well, they just plain suck. Van Helsing should have been enough proof that Steven Sommers should be shot.
-
Tarantino *was* talking about making a sequel/prequel to PULP FICTION for years. It was supposed to be called THE VEGAS BROTHERS. Never got made and that's probably a good thing. But there's a significant difference between PULP FICTION and SIN CITY. The first was an original screenplay written by Roger Avary and QT. SIN CITY is based on a series of comics, so there's a lot more material out there that can be adapted and brought to the big screen.
-
were both decent flicks IMO. Actually, DEEP RISING is kind of a masterpiece of cheese. MUMMY 1 was entertaining and had some really cool scenes. Skeleton swordfight anyone? Then MUMMY 2 came along and made me want to rip my eyes out of my skull along with my brain. Simply one of the worst, most painful, depressing times I've had watching a movie. Insultingly dumb "filmmaking" with unfinished eyesores for special effects. Which was bad, because the whole movie was filled with that terrible, terrible CGI work. Don't even get me started on the freakin' midget mummies or the Scorpion King ... Never bothered to see VAN HELSING. What I'm trying to say is, Sommers has some talent, or at least he *had* some, once. It may now all be gone due to too much freedom, success and cocaine. Universal needs to stop treating him like some kind of genius and give him a couple producers who won't take any shit from him. Then maybe he can return to making movies that are actually watchable.
-
The first Mummy was good enough, a vast improvement over the original ( lets face it; if you got caught by the original mummy, you deserved to die...dude was slower than a Romero old school zombie). The second Mummy was shite ( oh please, bring on the wise cracking child & Eygptian kung fu? ) & Van Helsing was a loud, festering turd of extraordinary lameness that showed absolutely no respect for the source material. Sin City two? Marv was the best thing about SC1...and I don't know if this visual style, first time out looking exciting & fresh, will seem that way the second time out. Always comes down to the story, though. Do they have it? Will they find a way to have Marv? Mickey Rourke, you beautiful bastard - you own that film.

by gruesome wedgie
I wouldn't say that. Most everyone here seems to have liked or loved Sin City, & what you may be seeing is concern that the second film won't stand up to the first, somehow devalueing the first. Bad sequels seem to have the effect of tarnishing what came before, & that would be a shame. Its happened before. A lot. ( btw - no one should use the word Valkriss twice in one minute. Just shouldn't) I hope they can make it work - I hope they haven't already used up all the good material. I hope like hell that somehow Marv ( the man, the god) can be in it. And I don't want to slight Willis/Hartigan; his story, & its finish, brought genuine sorrow to the precedings. Damn good stuff.
-
The first two he made were a lot of good clean fun, even if they weren't great by any stretch of the imagination. I just hope Sommers is smart enough to bring Brenden, Rachel, Oded, and John Hannah back. The series just wouldn't be the same without them.
-
The third is supposed to be about Ardeth Bay, which is great by me. I'm just worried that Sommers has too much on his plate already. All I'm asking is for more of his monster movies...and more Roxburgh as Dracula, actually.
-
Before he teams up with Sky Craptain Conran and shoots "Van Helsing versus the Mummy", with Cementsack Roxbore recast as Dracula and with badly inserted footage of Marlon Brando as Doktor Scheissmichvollpissmirindenmund?
-
Sommers has made exactly one decent movie and that one is named Deep Rising. I never liked The Mummy movies. Even on a retarded entertaining way they didn't work for me (hey, listen to me - I even enjoyed Tomb Raider 2 quite a bit). The man has fucked up the great concept that was Van Helsing and needs to do one of the following things: Make a GOOD movie OR stop directing! Who needs sequels if they aren't going to add anything to the original?

I mean, the other ones were outstanding, but I was bored out of my mind by Owen. Anyhoo. The Mummy I was fun - brainless, but fun. The Mummy Returns was just brainless. And I agree wholeheartedly with the poster who praised Deep Rising as perfect cheese. It's tons of fun. I'd buy it on DVD, if I could find it for $7 or less. I couldn't justify spending more though.

I think my only complaint about the first film was that in Cramming 3 of Miller's Stories into one film, the pacing on all the stories seemed rushed. Dwight's story wasn't up to par with the other two either.
I really don't see how you can streach the remaining novels into two more films, unless Miller writes another one. -

I absolutely loathe Sin City. All around one of the more heartless flicks I have ever seen. Absolutely no emotion anywhere in that flick. The Marv story would be okay. If poor Mickey Rourke did not have to pull forced emotion out of this ass. If there are going to be 2 more (You never know with Rodriguez), then may they not be straight up adaptations. Since a comic needs something more to transform it for the screen, then just the writer agreeing on shot selection. If that works out, then the next 2 might not suck. If not, we're doomed.
-
How can they do A Dame to Kill For? It seemed like they pretty much abandoned hopes of that with the inconsistent overlap in Marv's Story. Still, the more Sin City the better, no matter what you lousy punks think.

by inwosuxred
Thats alot of Sin City, and they already used the best book. A Dame to Kill For is an obvious choice, although Clive was by far the worst lead in the film, assuming he continues as Dwight. I'll still see both of them, but I have a feeling they won't have the same impact as the first one.
If Frank Miller has finally embraced film, I'd like to see them try and get Give Me Liberty released in today's climate. The way things are going they only have to wait a few years and they could just make it a documentary. -
we liked Sin City. "Bobby Teenager" didn't. there was big dropoff from opening week to second, as well as fairly common stories of walkouts. anyone i know who has seen it can count at least 4 per showing. moral: people are idiots. but even further: idiots get what they want.

by timbenzedrine
Because if he wasn't, this asshat would have the job. Universal owns the marketing rights to Kong, it was part of the deal they reached with Paramount back when they were both competing to remake King Kong.(one of them owned the rights to the script and the other owned the rights to the movie, so there was some dispute over who actually owned the character) Dino won and we lost. This is bad because reportedly Universal wanted to make an actual remake, with dinosaurs and everything, set in the thirties ( I recall they wanted Peter Falk to play Carl Denham.) Anyway, fast forward to the present. Kong makes lots of money for the Universal Theme parks, and their original monsters from their golden era continue to bring in revenue. Sommers first Mummy film made lots of money , so you do the math, More Monsters equals more money. Sommers is their monster guy now, which is why they let him fuck up an idea like Van Helsing. They would have given him Kong sooner or later. Personally, I would have liked to have seen someone like Speilberg do it years ago with a young Harrison Ford in the Jack Driscoll role, but that ship has sailed, a long time ago. So before any of you post another complaint about Peter Jackson remaking Kong, remember, it could be so much worse.
-
Since when had Milius been kicked off the project? Oh for fuck sakes, i give up.
-
The structure would be different maybe, but I'd love to see some of the short stories on the big screen. Another approach could be for Miller to write completely new material for the film, using the first one as a springboard. Damn straight.

Good question, but that's what Clive Owens twice calls Rosario Dawson near the end of their segment. A variant on valkerie, I suppose, & was also the name of Kruge's klingon girlfriend in Star Trek III. If I heard wrong, some one will come along & clear it up. I wasn't that fucking stoned.

by gruesome wedgie
Nobody should ever be allowed to wear Karloff's makeup. The Man never really got the respect he deserved, just lingering cult worship. That too may fade in time, as Lon Chaney Sr's seems to have too. Not among the faithful, of course. Those who know, know. Those who don't...who cares. Chaney's self made custom gear for turning himself into Alonzo the Armless Man ( in The Unknown with Joan Crawford) evokes a sense of wonder. Dude could only work for minutes at a time in it, but the effect is startling. None of that easy-to- tell the guys arms are behind his back shit. Chaney, & Karloff, were working on a whole different level.
-
where Chaney's got no legs. also, Chaney got the POINT of Phantom. he's evil and scary and evokes pity. he's not romantic a la Antonio Bandejo
-
They should drop Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz and make Ardeth Bay the hero. Weisz has already made comments to the press that she won't be doing anymore Mummy movies and Fraser just isn't as cool as Oded Fehr was. They can save money on huge star salaries and focus more story and spectacle. That's what I'd do at least. The film will probably suck but I liked Van Helsing and thought it was a big improvement over Mummy Returns, which was really a bad film. Then again, I'm a sucker for popcorn movies so shoot me. Can't wait to see the entire Sin City saga captured on film. I'm glad the flick was a hit.
-
Actually, the books of Sin City could go on for another round of films. The stories are still gritty but we have already been to Sin City once. The magic wont be there like the first time. It would be like revisiting Pulp Fictions L.A. Wouldnt be the same. As for Steven "the hackalisious one" Sommers...I would rather see Deep Rising 2 than endure another Mummy film. the first one was alright, a big-budget B-movie, an homage to the Indiana Jones film...or a good enough rip-off. How many times can you bring Imotep back?! He's becoming the next Jason Vorhees. Deep Rising 2!!! Deep Rising 2!!!

Goatzinger. You're rating The Mummy, and piss-taking me? This site can eat one. It used to have vaguely informed posters, now it's just... vague. Oh, great cuss, by the way. 'Lonely kitfox'. That's fucking hilarious. Maybe I'll come visit in about 20 years when your balls drop and you aren't blinded by mediocrity (look it up). Though somehow I doubt it.

Oh yeah...utterly superb. I have a photo of Lon strapping himself in for that film. Amazing. And a better film than The Unknown, although any Chaney is good Chaney. We'll never see his like again, & mores the pity. God I miss the masters....

it ceratinly would have been interesting to see Lou Chaney playing Dracula... just as a curiosity mind you.
-
Lon was supposed to play Drac, but for reasons I forget, did not. He did get the roll passed to Bela, so thats how that happened. Actually, I think Lon was dying at that time. It would have been incredible, cause Lon was also the man of 1000 voices...
-
oops, now why did i type lou? lol.
yes, that would have been good, but Lugosi was fantastic-its hard to imagine anyone else playing Dracula. whenever i think of Dracula, Lugosi is who i think of.

Something the world needs more of: empty, stylized pictures that make nerds flog themselves silly. If one more geek tries to tell me how "brilliant" Sin City was and that "...it wasn't flawed; it was true to the source.", amputations are going down. Adhereing to source material isn't always good, especially when you're working with lame, juvenile stories that anyone over that age of sixteen should turn their nose up at. I never read them, but if the comics are exactly like the movies, then they too are pieces of shit. And don't give me that nonsense that Rodriguez is some kind of genius because he filmed a bunch of worthless killing scenes in black and white, with the occasional color. Mindless violence is still mindless violence. The sound and fury have to have a purpose and what was the purpose here? Simply put, to allow a bunch of jerkoffs who are scared of women's sexuality to sit in a theater and watch people get butchered because whatever fundamental intelligence people should have never developed in these miscreants. Did it feel good to imagine the jock that picked on you in high school got his nuts ripped off by Bruce Willis? Did you enjoy pretending that you were Clive Owen and you had finally found a soulmate; someone who was as dumb and as bloodthirsty as you? Get a fucking life, you schmucks. Grow up, get out of your fucking bubbles, and move into the real world. And for Christ's sake, if you're going to try to be a film buff, but you can only watch violent, bloody movies, at least watch some Sam Peckinpah, Don Siegel, or even Jack Hill. There's more going on in one minute of a Peckinpah film than there is all of Sin City. And at least Hill and Siegel were good craftsmen. Stop jerking off to Rodriguez, 'cause at the rate your going, your skin's gonna peel off.
-
I completely agree the best stories were used for the movie. A Dame to Kill for is mediocre, I dont see it being good on screen.
-
So I can't wait for sequels.
-
Andrew Lloyd Webber should be shot & pissed on, & not in that order. His socalled "Phantom" has very little to do with Gaston Leroux's homicidal sewer rat. Like most hacks working these days, they steal the basic idea, title, & then roll out there own plump, crusty turds. And I wonder if the posters who pissed venom all over Sin City ever read Mickey Spillane. Granted, Sin City was steriodal monster version of Spillane, & like Spillane, is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I would never call it "brilliant", but it was certainly more interesting then the last "experimental" film (Sky Craptain" that I saw.
-
I agree- Chaney was excellent in Phantom. And yes, Sin City was always going to be celluloid Marmite- people are either going to love it or hate it. Its nice to see Mickey Rourke getting work again too- he was born to play Marv.
-
because it was well advertised and discussed beforehand. no one walked into that theatre thinking they were getting something else.
