Updated! Marty Krofft (Mis)speaks On The Radio About LAND OF THE LOST!

Published at:  Apr 29, 2005 3:29:02 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here. Harry and I heard from Jack Black's management today, a very emphatic statement that Jack will NOT be doing either LAND OF THE LOST or H.R. PUFNSTUF. Makes you think maybe Marty Krofft was just dreaming out loud on the radio, eh? After all, he got Will Ferrell attached with Adam McKay directing. I'm sure he would love to have Jack Black also attached, but right now, that's not the case. Anyway... here's the original story...

Hey folks, Harry here with a bit of crazy coolness. Seems Jack Black and Will Ferrell are gonna double team Kirsten Dunst and show her their Brontosaurus and T-Rex! How killer is that? Seems Jack can't get over his dino fever from Kong and wants more prehysterics! Who can blame him? Hell, next thing ya know he'll become the spokesman for SINCLAIR gas insisting that you put a Dinosaur in your Tank! As for him playing Witchiepoo... there's not enough acid in the world to drop for that film!

Marty Krofft was on the radio this morning talking about the DVD
releases of "Land of the Lost" The subject of the new movie version
came up. He said that along with Will Ferrell, the movie will also
have Kirsten Dunst and Jack Black. He also mentioned that they plan
to use the lowest of the high tech digital effects when making the
film so it will look similar to the tv series. He then talked about
how they are going to be making an HR Pufnstuf movie with Jack Black
staring in it as Witchiepoo.

If you want to check it out and verify what he said, the talk show
always has a best of show running from 9am-2pm eastern time on
Saturdays. Their website is www.monsters.fm to listen to the free
streaming broadcast. They are also on XM satellite channel 152, but I
am not sure if they play the best of show on there

Jack Black is in it!? And they will use crappy FX just for fun? Man, this film must be great!!! Hope Kirsten Dunst will be in a wet shirt again.

Just kidding. Sounds seriously fucked up, but just about all Sid & Marty Krofft shows were, so that's nothing new. I suspect there's a Hell of a lot more thought being put into this than the Bewitched and Dukes of Hazard movies combined.

This seems kinda awkward, don't you think?

Oh yeah, now there's a new Hollywood formula. Take a beloved cult TV show, remake it as a camped-up comedy, alienate the pre-sold audience of the show's fans by showing your utter comtempt for the source material and turn it into a vehicle for an overexposed actor whose performances are better known for their self-indulgence than for their wit. After all, it worked so well for 'The Wild Wild West'. (Which looked like a bad movie anyways) And next year, Jim Carrey does 'The Six Million Dollar Man'. (With Hulk Hogan as the baddie, Brother!)
Look, I know the original show may be considered cheesy by today's standards, but here's the problem. If your gonna poke fun at 'Land Of The Lost', it would make alot more sense to do it in the form a skit for a comedy show. like 'SNL', But to do a big budget movie adaptation, and turn it into a mockery seems kinda awkward.

If you ask me, Kerri Kenney from "The State" and "Reno 911!" should be playing Witchiepoo. Not sure where to put Jack Black in any Sid & Marty Krofft production, though...

When I heard about it, I was hoping they would play it straight, and use the modern technology to re-create all the creatures and what not from the show and turn it into a fantasy/adventure type deal. Ferrell is all right, but I'm not all that down with this idea.

    Jack Black should play...

    by ed_wood_jr

..a grown-up Jimmy in a "Pufnstuf" film. If you want to go the route they appear to be considering, Black as a guy living with guys in foam suits for twenty years singing goofy songs might be a fun way to use his screen persona. (That said, even thinking of this idea is like packing my childhood's suitcase and driving it to Neverland Ranch.)

But this just comfirms it. I could see Unibrow Black as one of the Pakuni, but Witchypoo? Billie Hayes owned that role. I'm sure there are actresses that would kill for a part like that. They ought to hold open auditions and see what they can get. But getting back to Land of the Lost-- why make a film that plays up the cheapness of the look of the series? They had a tiny budget back then and they had to shoot all their effects on video. They did what they HAD TO in order to get the series made. The miniature work was first rate, and the animation was supervised by Gene Warren and Wah Chang, two of George Pal's animator/effectsmen. They used some of the best science fiction writers working at that time for the storylines. You can't tell me they weren't sincere in their original intent. Sure, the studio sets looked fake, the kid's clothes were always cleaned and pressed, and everyone went a little heavy on the pancake makeup, but that's the way most low budget TV produtions (especially soaps) looked at the time. Look, Star Trek didn't always have the greatest effects, but they did the best with what they had at the time. but they didn't focus on the cheapness that occasionally krept into the original series when they made their (first few ) movies. I don't know-- It just seems wrong, like holding up one of your kids for ridicule because they aren't perfect.

    Will Ferrell is a plague!

    by oompa_radar

Enough is enough with all the 70's spoofs. Leave my childhood alone! Spoofing is fine ala SNL, Mr. Show and the Damn Show (Gooks of Hazzard, anyone?). But this is insane.
Ferrell, Stiller and his ilk--and anyone actually still forking over their hard earned cash to these morons--need to be smacked.
