Harry chimes in on this whole Marvel Studios / CAPTAIN AMERICA / Nick Fury thing!

Hey folks, Harry here... Since Quint posted that story and Variety broke it... I've been getting interviewed all day about what I thought of it. Well... It sorta comes down to this. Often times with these MARVEL movies, when they end up sucking the ass end out of a rotting donkey... it's usually the terrible decision of folks in the studio that just don't get the heroes they're dealing with. I mean - take DAREDEVIL - the film was butchered to a PG-13, and if you've seen the original R, you probably agree it is a FAR superior film. Most of the problems with the first and second X-MEN (two movies I really really like) come down to not being financed at the level they should have been given, and with the insane schedule that the suit monkeys in charge of Fox have given X3 - we just have to pray that Matthew Vaughn manages to pull a miracle. Then there's FANTASTIC FOUR which studio dweebs felt needed to be hipped up and sexed up and systematically fucked a once great script with good directors attached, and reduced it to a hack helmed unfinanced quickie. Again - let's pray it comes out better than ELEKTRA - also a Fox monstrosity. Avi Arad and Kevin Feige - the big boys behind Team Marvel tend to get their characters - even if the studios don't. They also live on the sets and helping in every way they can... or are allowed to given the various studios they're working through.

I'm actually quite happy about Marvel's decision to finance and produce their films independently with a distribution deal worked out with Paramount. Mainly because - this is what George Lucas did that allowed him to really build SKYWALKER RANCH, ILM, SKYWALKER SOUND, THX and even PIXAR - speaking of whom, they're going under this same model too. Independently producing product that, in a yet to be announced deal, they'll probably have a distribution and promotion deal to put it out there.

Starting with CAPTAIN AMERICA is a ballsy move. In most of these interviews I'm getting, they are laying out the question about how viable is CAPTAIN AMERICA in the foreign territories given the image crisis America is suffering abroad given it's well lack of "good P.R."? It's a very good question, and my answer was... if they make the Captain America movie that I think most of us would prefer to see - it wouldn't be a rah rah flick set in the modern day, but a full on World War 2 adventure that would pit Cap and Bucky versus either The Red Skull and/or Baron Zemo - that would leave us set up for heading to the modern day. Cap vs Nazis would be as internationally popular, if made to the absolute height of potential as the Indiana Jones adventures. I know that it is that version of the character that most geeks that I know would prefer to see. How about you. Well, this isn't new - but as I said, I've been asked to chime in - here's the details of what has happened...

hi there, aicn

first time scoop (hope it is) by fleshmeatdoll, long time reader from good old germany.

this morning an austrian news agency reports that marvel attempts to build their own film studio.

after having had a share of only 3 percent with ticket sales on spiderman and only 1 percent with dvd sales on the same title, marvel thinks its time to make big money. Marvel says they want to produce their own superhero movies. that is the offical reason. Distribution and marketing will be done by paramount.

First of, they have lend money from merrill- lynch. It is a 525 million credit and most interestingly, the backdrop security are the rights to 10 of their most famous characters, namely Captain America, Nick Fury and the Avengers. The others were not mentiond in this report.

Now, CAPTAIN AMERICA will also be the first film to be produced!!! Read todays Wall street journal for more.

I hope thats cool news...

    by baseballfury

I have always thought a Cap movie would work, but only if done as a period piece. Trying to explain his suspended animation would kill the first half of the flick, and ignoring it or rewriting it would blow. And, just a little thought, keep Goyer the hell away from both of these movies. I like the Blades, but Jesus Christ, give someone else a shot. You already had a chance on Nick fury, with The Hasselhoff. Fuck off for five minutes, so someone else can try. Peace.

Pros and Cons of the marvel/paramount Deal.

    by The Founder

Well in my opinion it sounds good that marvel will be producing their films, but at the same time Marvel putting a fanboy to helm up a comic movie may spell trouble if the the guy isn't reigned in. I've always felt that it's a good idea to have some actual writers and creative teams from comic companies on board comics being turned into live action films. Now the downside is them realizing that they have to take in to account that the comic demographic is small, and the bulk of the profits of the film will come from the mainstream audience. The last thing that is needed is to much stuff from the comics to be poured into a film, like some of the costumes that no matter how sweet it looks on paper, it looks terriable in live action. I think it has to be a fair balance so that fans won't be pissed and the mainstream will understand it.

    by The Founder

I don't know of a good F4 script, save for the one that was deemed to expensive to shoot, it was above 200 million, ans this was like 10 years ago. The only director i heard that was on board that was the best of the litter was Chris Columbus. from waht i've seen of the f4, it looks good, not great, but harry has really had it in for this film from the get go. give it a rest harry, cause non of us know how the f4 will turn out. I'm in the middle on the goodness of how good the film may be.

    by BurlIvesLeftNut

Does this mean when rights lapse on previously sold properties that Marvel can then reclaim their property? I am assuming so. This fantastic! Imagine a studio owning the rights to ever Marvel character, and that studio actually BEING Marvel. I really don't trust Avi Arad's judgment, but he won't last forever. Excelsior!

    I agree with Harry

    by Darth Busey

Marvel is doing the right thing here by taking THEIR properties back and filming them the way THEY want to. Of course, they will likely have to cut corners financially, but so long as the characters are portrayed properly, that will go a long ways towards building credibility with their fan base. Personally, I'd like to see a Captain America/Nick Fury & Howling Commandos WWII set flick. After the first intro movie, you can spin off Cap and Fury into their own films. The best thing about this is that now we can see the CROSSOVERS that we've waited for so long. Marvel won't be restricted by that studio bullshit, whereby Daredevil can't appear in a Spider-Man movie anymore.

    Cosmic Cube

    by Lon Bowling

All you have to do is have the Red Skull get ahold of the Cosmic Cube (in the last days of WW2)then the Cube takes Cap and the Skull on a journey through time. So Act 1 could be WW2, act 2 could be set in the early 60's (Kennedy's Assassination?), act 3 could be present day and the finale could be the not too distant future. And let's hope we get to see the Falcon! This way Cap gets to see just what a shithole America becomes in his absence.

Do not have Cap fighting Arabs

    by Donal_Graeme

Please God, do not have Captain America taking on Arab terrorists. It will suck so bad. Take the opening from Ultimates 1 with Cap on his last WWII mission. Throw in the plot line of the Austen/Jae Lee comic run where it turned out that Cap was frozen by the Government because they were scared of him. Add Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, the Shield Helicarrier, flying cars, get Zhang Ziyi to play Madame Hydra, blow tons of shit up and you have cinematic Gold.

    by BrashHulk

If Marvel sticks to this plan, the result will be a similar effect, a "macrocosm" if you will, of "The Alamo" effect. No one except for movie critics outside the state of Texas either watched or cared about "The Alamo" movie. Why? Because it's too much a region-specific story about a specific region in America that most Americans would just as soon see fall into the ocean. That same attitude is felt about America as a whole by many, many people outside our borders. Now, I'm not going to descend into the Hell of debating the ongoing foreign relations problems that plague our current regime - I'm simply talking money. Foreign box office is a considerable source of income in today's cinema, and titling a movie "Captain America" is a perfect way to guarantee that today's foreign movie-goers will stay away in droves. For purely fiscal reasons, Marvel should either consider releasing a Cap movie with a different title, or just have him be a part of an Avengers or Invaders movie ensemble cast.

If Our Military is so piss poor

    by JUSTICE41

Why don't you guys over there try to launch a nuke on us? We are all just pussies and push overs after all, right? If Our bud Israel is so cowardly why doesn't all the surrounding arab states attack little ole Israel? Why Same answer for both questions. We would turn the rest of the world into a nuclear wasteland. Simple as that. The Israeli's have the Samson Trigger, We have MADD. I'm sure you folks wouldn't want to pull the Trigger and watch as Mighty Samson get's MADD and levels the place. Soldiers in hostile territory get killed all the time. Part of being a soldier. We could have just as easily turned Iraq into glittering Black Sand along with Syria and Iran. But being the good guys we only killed a few hundred thousand of em A fair trade off for the over 1600 we lost. We lose 1 they Lose 10.

Justice, u sure don't understand geopolitics

    by tombseye

Firstly, even if WE, the US, nuke other countries, we all suffer genius. Secondly, yeah Israel is the most dominant military power in the region, BUT only b/c we made them. Egypt nearly kicked their asses in '73, but we airlifted them out of trouble, while the Soviets sent a smaller airlift to Egypt. And you're the reason our country is going down the drain. While "patriots" wave the flag, NOBODY has asked, gee maybe backing Israel all the time isn't in our best interest. What exactly do they do for us that we back them in an occupation? And hello, Iraq didn't attack us. Nuking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Real smart. Neither did Syria or Iran. Most of the terrorists came from friendly states, notably Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Geez. Is this what drives the red states to victory? Believing in fantasies without any knowledge about either history or actual politics in the world? No wonder Fox News has high ratings. Apparently a fool is born every minute. Here's a clue, we're not the good guys just because we say so. You think that MAYBE because the rest of the planet thinks less of us that there might be something amiss? A fair trade my ass. Human life is human life. Meanwhile, our leaders are selling our country to debtors in China and Japan to enrich the superrich and the suckers who voted in Dubya are no doubt ready to live off of patriotism as healthcare costs skyrocket, college tuition becomes a luxury and average wages continue to decline. Yeah, god bless america. Captain America's a bad idea unless they do the Ultimates version or do a Miller version from the 80s. Other than that, no thanks.

Just stay in the basement and be internet politicans.I'll think about you when i'm in Iraq in two weeks trying to give people who want it a chance at freedom.

Here's the list of characters they're planning to make movies for, beyond those already mentioned: Thor, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Silver Surfer, and Killraven (note, this is off the Marvel press release about earnings.) In addition, since "Deathlok" is set up at Paramount, I suspect Paramount will let the rights revert to Marvel and have THEM take the financial risk. As for the remaining wild-cards, I'd say Iron Man and Luke Cage look good.

    by tombseye

Yeah sure. Some guy on a message board repeats a worn out cliche and then INTERPRETS valid criticism as "hating" America, whatever the hell that means, and hey I'm packing my bags! Wow, it worked! Now we can all never criticize what is going on and just say, 'gee people voted for him ONCE'. Yeah once. He lost in 2000 and the Supremes handed it to him. Hell, that's why Putin reminded Bush of 2000 when Bush had the balls to tell him that he was becoming authoritarian. Takes one to know I guess. Yeah that's right, I'm 'defending' terrorists. Gee, nothing in my posts seems to read that, but hey as long as shmucks come out and say what isn't said it must be true! they do it on Fox and every time Dubya opens his yap to lie for the billionth time that 'they' hate us for our freedom when it's actually our support of Israel, meddling in their affairs, invading Iraq on madeup charges, using the World Bank to bully countries into doing things our way economically, and then the single veto the US uses at the UN to oppose the rest of the world when they point out that MAYBE we're wrong. No kidding that we're not perfect. But unlike say Zimbabwae, our actions have wide repercussions. While our president shreds the bill of rights and then tells the world that global warming isn't proven (haha), the rest of the world shakes their heads and think we must have lost our mind. Must be why our allies even are wondering what the hell is going on. Meanwhile, Hollywood glamorizing the righteous American way and discounts the rest and ridicules countries like France for disagreeing (and they were right, no wmds!). As for going to Iraq to give people freedom, well hey what other reason was left after the wmds and terrorism "links" were proven wrong? Obviousy, now it's about liberating Iraq. Yeah, next we'll hear about how North Korea was also involved in 9/11 and hey maybe France too! They just keep repeating the lies and cultural hegemony takes hold and people grow more apathetic and they tell everyone, hey we're a democracy. Yes, a democracy that has an electoral college that elects our leaders. Geez, is there anyone left who can think outside the box and question our govt. without falling back on, "we're not perfect, but I'll be damned if I listen to someone support terrorists." that's a joke. Yeah terrorists are why we outspend the rest of the planet in defense. Keep drinking the coolaid. 9/11 happened b/c a few religious fanatics decided to do something about our meddling and they got our attention in the only way people seem to understand, violence. Now let's just let 'em reshape the whole planet for corporations and Rupert Murdoch owned media. Wonderful.

But you people who can't set aside your politics for just a moment to even discuss the possibility of there being a Captain America movie without spewing your vitriol against America are just pitiful and sad. It's a MOVIE! I'm also a big Captain America fan (have been since before I learned how lucky I am to be an American) and I think a decent Cap movie would be great to have. And as much as I might love to see a movie with Captain America putting his big red boot up Bin Laden's ass, I can set aside MY political bias long enough to realize that just won't work as a MOVIE - not because of politics but because it would just be a stupid movie. Mixing the Marvel Universe and ours to that extent would just come off silly. Just as in the Spider-Man movies, the villian has to be as colorful and as fantastic as the hero. Make it a movie not about Captain America, but about WW2 with Cap and Fury as characters within a larger story with the Red Skull in the backdrop. Then, as another talkbacker said, use it to spin off movies dedicated to those two.
