Land of the Lost 3.x

From a 2003 AICN chat with TV comedy genius Jane Espenson:

HERC: What Saturday morning cartoon shook your world?

JANE: I liked all the cartoons, but I have a special fondness for the live-action LAND OF THE LOST. They were on this routine expedition and they met the greatest earthquake ever known, you see...

Ah, yes, “Land of the Lost.” Keep your acid-washed “H.R. PufnStuf,” your “Sigmund and the Seamonsters,” your “Bugaloos,” your “Lidsville,” your “Lost Saucer.”

The apex, the pinnacle, the prized gem of the Sid & Marty Krofft legacy is “Land of the Lost,” which ran on NBC between 1974 and 1977.

It was a Saturday-morning science fiction saga about a family on a rafting adventure – dad Rick Mashall, son Will and daughter Holly – that gets sucked through a mysterious portal into a mysterious land inhabited by dinosaurs, proto-humans, hissing lizard-men (the Sleestak!) and Christ knows what else. There was this Pylon that allowed journeys to still other worlds!

Though the series’ production values remain among the saddest ever budgeted for television, the first season of “Land of the Lost” benefited hugely from writing contributed by major-league sci-fi novelists like Ben Bova and Larry Niven, to say nothing of “Star Trek” vets Margaret Armen, D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold and Norman Spinrad. Even the second season featured an episode by Theodore Sturgeon.

The big names pretty much vanished with the third season, which hits DVD this week, as did the actor who played Rick. Rick vanished into another dimension, and the kids’ Uncle Jack conveniently arrived to defend them during the third season against brontosauri and other manifestations of the uncanny. For this reason, I recommend you have a gander at season one before investing in subsequent 'sodes.

Weird, though, isn’t it? That Universal announced on Sunday that “Anchorman” boys Will Ferrell and Adam McKay would reteam for a comedy version of “Land of the Lost,” just a day or two before the last episodes finally hit DVD??

This show was a steaming turd 30 years ago. Even as a tyke in the 70's I didn't have the patience to sit through it. They bring back this and yet I'm still waiting for my dvd of the 1980 classic, Flash Gordon?

You have to look at LOTL in a particular way...

    by commando cody

First, it didn't TOTALLY suck -- only those old enough can remember watching it when it was first on and for what it was: an attempt at Saturday morning live action adventure for kids. Sheesh, remember when Saturday morning WAS a battleground between CBS, NBC and ABC for kids and they actually DID put effort into new cartoons or shows that would capture a kid's attention or imagination? Talk about a bygone era. As for the new movie, Will Farrell doing it as a comedy sounds like a pretty damn perfect way to straddle the line between reviving the property and realizing you could only take it so serious. So here's hoping it turns out all right, because done right it could be a fun GHOSTBUSTERS type of comedy/adventure film.

I dug the old movies, especially QUATERMASS & THE PIT (aka FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH) which Stephen King ripped off for TOMMYKNOCKERS. LIFEFORCE borrowed a lot from it too.

I mean there's more shill links than there is actual story text! This stuff is becoming more and more of a joke. I mean it's becoming clear that lots of so called 'stories' are now being posted for no other reason that to once again go on an Amazon linking safari...I mean a couple of in context links is one thing, but when you have more four full screens worth of them it's gotten way out of hand. I just hope no one is silly enough to click through them to support these blatant overblown shill fests, especially while there's so damn many of them thrown out at us constantly.

    The Will Ferrell Flick

    by roj blake

Assuming the news is true (and it sounds exactly like the kind of thing that is), it bothers me less that a send-up is likely being developed and far more that they had to cast the least funny and most overrated "comedian" working today. First and foremost, everything about Rick Marshall was laid back - every thing about Ferrell is, quite simply, not. If you want to parody that character, get someone who can at least do a decent parody. Ferrell is all about LOUD and ANNOYING which is about as far removed as you can get from Marshall. I know a lot of hardcore fans are bothered by this news; I consider myself to be a huge fan, but really I think LOTL belongs to a very certain time and place and even a big-budget, straight-forward reimagining would likely be about as far removed from the original series as a stupid comedy starring that jackass.

    closed universe

    by goldschlager2112

    CKnightShift,
The Uncle (3rd season) fell in conveniently because he had been actively searching when Rick escaped. Because it was a closed universe, nobody could enter until someone left. (another reason why Enik was stuck there for so long). This closed universe nature was better explained in the Larry Niven episode where the kids climbed a moutain peak and looked to the next peak, where they could see the backs of themselves.

    Run, Chaka, Run!!!

    by catbarf the 5th

... run away from this bad idea as fast as you can!!! I don't think LOTL is really great material for a spoof. Though I don't think a serious update would do much good either. My main memories of the original show (mind you, seen on a small B&W tv with multiple ghost images and snowy static...I couldn't see the bad special FX and it looked even more real somehow) was that it was SCARY. The Sleestack were pretty terrifying. And all the weird pylons and stuff were very strange. The dinosaurs were pretty scary at the time. That great intro of Grumpy the T-Rex a pretty vivid childhood memory. The mystery and danger of the LOTL was very powerful to any kid with half an imagination and a brain. The LOTL world was a puzzle that had to be solved in order for the family to survive, and the stakes felt as high as the world seemed strange. I remember being freaked out when Will & Holly discover that the LOTL is a closed universe that's only 20 miles across, and if you walk in one direction you'll soon wind up right back where you started. The strange science fiction subplots...the Sleestack were advanced once but then became primitive... the LOTL is self-regulating but sometimes breaks down (the pylons) The Zarn was an alien who also became trapped there... all the weird time travel interdimentional paradox stuff... the pakuni and their language... it all added up to a pretty rich universe for a show that cost jack shit (and was *still* too expensive to produce). I remember watching and watching just to figure out more about what the LOTL was. No other kids show that I know of, and few adult shows, have ever gone to this kind of effort at giving a series a deep background story which the viewer can wonder about and guess at. Looking back on it, the overall effect of the low production values was lousy, but the sum was greater than the parts. This show was utterly unique in all of TV history, and deserves to be remembered and loved, even if watching it now is a little painful in some ways. In the remake, I hope they still play banjo music on the soundtrack when the dinosaurs start chasing Marshal Willenholy... (END OF TB ESSAY 1) Seriously though, forget this remake! I want to get back to the primal fear and wonder of dinosaurs! I want to see a really good, serious dinosaur movie... somewhere between Walking with Dinosaurs and a Jurassic Park movie (minus all the genetic stuff, corporate greed subplots, and bad characters). Like a time travel story back to 70 million years ago, where the people get marooned and have to survive back then. Not only would you have great dinosaur fun, but there's great epic landscape potential here too... entire epochs brought to life. Imagine a trek over thousands of miles of Jurassic landscapes. I want to be in AWE of these past eras where there were no stinking humans and no stinking oil wells... just stinking dinosaurs and a planet teeming with all manner of weird and wonderful life forms, and the first politician had not yet crawled from the slime.
