Sometimes he's a toothy vagina-mouthed monster, sometimes a fish-man - Now he's a Satyr in Del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH!

Published at:  Apr 25, 2005 5:40:03 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Lonestarr is chiming in with the latest transformation that one of our modern Lon Chaney's is undertaking. Doug Jones will be playing the best on-screen Satyr since Tony Randall's in SEVEN FACES OF DR LAO - and this one has the best Satyr role written since Nicholson in THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. I've had the pleasure of reading Guillermo Del Toro's next Spanish Language gothic fairy tale. This will complete a trilogy of Guillermo's own grim fairy tales that began with CRONOS continued with THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE and is carried through with PAN'S LABYRINTH which is most definitely the largest in scope. Think about LABYRINTH - but scary, no songs, a far younger more vulnerable girl, very real problems to be escaping from... and in this case a very real destiny - but whether it is a happy one or a tragic one... I'll leave that to you - but ponder back on Guillermo's Spanish fantasy films... both have been bittersweet and you better believe el Gordo hasn't been laying the cajeta in too thick. Doug's satyr, Pan isn't the only creature, and the creatures aren't the only monsters facing this little girl. Now - if only I could announce AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS as being in pre-production. Jesus, I want that film now.

Hey Harry,

Lonestarr here -

I'm the one who sent in the exterior
house/graveyard pics of the "Haunted Mansion" set over
a year ago, yada yada...I have some news that you guys
might find interesting. According to his website,
dougjones.topcities.com, everyone's favorite creature
actor and perhaps the coolest guy in the world, Doug
"Abe Sapien" Jones of "Hellboy" fame has been
personally cast by Guillermo Del Toro himself to play
the title role in his upcoming movie, "Pan's
Labyrinth". Doug will portray Pan, the fawn/satyr
(Half man-half goat in Greek mythology) that befriends
a troubled little girl during WWI, and will be shot
entirely in Spain. In fact, Doug is the only American
actor in the cast and he will have to learn how to
speak his Spanish dialogue phoenetically. According
to him, it is one of the most beautiful scripts he has
ever read, and is looking forward to the project.

He is currently filming "Benchwarmers" in SoCal with
Adam Sandler, and will shoot "Pan" in July/August. In
case some of you don't know, Doug was the moon-faced
"MacTonite" guy for McDonalds ads in the late 80's,
Billy Butcherson in "Hocus Pocus", Yee in "Warriors of
Virtue", one of the freaky floating gentlemen in that
acclaimed Buffy episode, among many others, is a
terrific actor and the nicest person you can ever
meet...

Here's hoping DelToro will make a wonderful children's
fantasy...

For now, Lonestarr out.

You are living in a fantasy world if you think kids are going to read subtitles, sound more like a childish film made for us geeks, oh well as long as DelToro doesn't plan on making a ton of cash from this. Just my opinion.

Jeez, this flick was originally supposed to start filming in NOVEMBER 2004!! Then the financing fell through. New financing was secured. It was supposed to film in MARCH 2005. Then MAY 2005. And now JULY/AUGUST??? Will this damn thing EVER go before cameras? Why can't Guillermo del Toro not just make 8 films every year like Takashi Miike? *sigh* And I'm also still waiting for that MIMIC DIRECTOR'S CUT DVD that he has promised a while ago!

I wonder if this movie has a chance of getting a negative review? Also, Doug Jones IS NO CHANEY. You should know that in addition to acting, Chaney was a pioneer in the art of make-up. This Doug Jones is no more of a pioneer than the guy who was Predator and Harry from Harry and the Hendersons.

... or is it a typo? As for subtitles, went to see The Cowboy Bebop movie "Knocking of Heaven's Door" a year or two back in Australia and after the initial surprise of many in the audience that it was in Japanese with subtitles and not dubbed, everyone just shut up and watched it, so you never know ... Later on, saw the English dub of the movie and I have to say the ADVision people do better anime dubs into English than just about anyone else.

But if it actually is made for kids I got good news: they got kids now in Spain, Mexico and probaly at least one or two other spanish speaking countries.

In the article the film is refered to as a "Childrens Fantasy" at the end, I've never heard of Cronos or Devils backbone described that way? and I have no doubt that this film will do well in Spanish speaking countries but if the Key audience of this film is ten year olds then I doubt it would make the really big bucks that other kids films do in English speaking countries (Harry Potter etc) Maybe coming from the UK I've underestimated the amount of spanish speaking people in the US? (are all Texans & New Mexicans brought up bi-lingual?) My point is, it must be a real Labour of love for Del Toro if he's willing to lose potential Box Office in certain teritories (US/UK/Canada/Australia) Where the kids aren't used to films with Subs or Dubbed, in order to better satisfy the audiences of other countries who are more acustomed to dubs/subs (Spain/Mexico etc).
Unless of course it's not a kids movie at all and i'm reading too much into the term "Childrens Fantasy" This is a kids film right?

They're the number one minority in America and the Spanish speaking population is getting bigger. It's not just Texas and New Mexico, but Arizona, Nevada, California, Florida, New York, New Jersey and now a days pretty much everywhere else. So I'm not saying it'll do better here than in Spain, or Latin America, but it won't do too bad either.

Subtitles aren't a big issue in Australia.

    by shan

At least I don't think so. Run Lola Run, Goodbye Lenin, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero and so on did huge business here, all subtitled, not dubbed. Apparently we're also the biggest foreign market for French films outside France (maybe it's per capita or some qualifier - however the sales here are disproportionate to our population size and it's considered very important to the french marketing departments). Also, we have foreign movies which are subtitled every day on free to air TV on one of the government run stations. So, you could say a lot of us are used to it.

Subtitles for kids is my point. I didn't start watching films with subs until I was about 14 (Delicatessen I remember) nobody else my age was watching these films yet. Do todays English speaking kids watch films with subs in large numbers?, because he could be missing out on a huge Potential Market if it is a classic childrens fantasy.

    by indio2

Del Toro is making it for the huge SPANISH speaking world market, not just one language Norte Amercanos. My hometown of Mexico City alone has a population of 20,000,000+. The film is being made with Mexican & Spanish money and strong Latino sensibilities. IT IS A SPANISH MOTION PICTURE!!! The English speaking is simpily the cream on the cobbler, you can take it or leave it, although admittedly it is superior with the cream. It is great that Del Toro (unlike many Mexican writer-directors that make good) has not forgotten his roots, where he came from, and the public that brought him to the world's biggest stage. He is an inspiration to 10s of thousands of Latino movie-loving kids. And is looked upon a a god of sorts in the massive Spanish speaking countries around the world. As for coping Buffy... NOT HARDLY this script was written years ago, in Mexico, before Buffy even existed...

Taegugki was about the Korean War, for a Korean audience and made a lot of money in Korea (estimated 1 in 4 people saw it in the country). Also went on to be a big hit in the Asian region. Made about 4 or 5 times its budget in gross takings. English speaking market ... much much less in comparison. Still made a lot of money.

I think what they mean by "children's fantasy" is that the movie may be told through the point of view of a child but will appeal to adults. "The Devil's Backbone" was told through the eyes of young orphans during the Spanish Civil War and it was a fantastic movie. As for the subtitles, I prefer them to dubbing because I can hear the inflection in the voices. I think most of us Americans can handle them. Course being Hispanic I have an advantage over you gringos. Heh-heh. ( I say this with love of course )

I hear you bud. I see what you're saying. I think the misconception though is that Mr. Of the Bull would make a movie like this for American audiences. Like somebody else said, he is Mexican and while he has had success in Hollywood he seems to like going back every movie or two to make one for Spanish language audiences. If you've seen Devil's Backbone you can see how this type of movie simply couldn't or at least shouldn't be made in English with American audiences in mind. It's not that type of party. That's one thing I like about the dude, he's got these two styles that are so different. To answer your question about subtitles, though - they are becoming more common in American multiplexes (Kung Fu Hustle for example) but no, not in movies for kids. (The miyazaki pictures for example are dubbed when they play in most american theaters.)

    by shan

I like Japanese and Korean movies so much that I've been learning both for the last few years. Unfortunately I have to admit I'm not very good at either of them. I do not have the knack for it. English, not being a particularly easy language to learn can cause trouble for some people who try to learn it. If you try learning a foreign language as an English speaker, you'll see what I mean and it's important to keep this in mind before attacking people for their English skills. I agree, however that if anyone moves to any other country where they speak a language you don't know and it's the national language, you should at least try to learn it. Also, I'm with Noriko Takaya on what she says too.
