Mr Bootles is agogging about STAR WARS: CELEBRATION!

Published at:  Apr 23, 2005 8:38:25 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - it's almost all over... Soon it'll be time for me to shave and sing. Wow. Here's a report from yesterday's STAR WARS: CELEBRATION! Enjoy...

Harry...

Wow... this thing is crazy.  Never been to one before, but I gotta say that this is just amazing.  If you think you care and are devoted to Star Wars - these guys make you look like a Kindergardener....

Lots of stuff to talk about - but the coolest-

Saw a 6 minute montage of footage from Sith.  All you can say is "WOW."  Fanboys all over the room were wetting their pants.  Rick McCallum introduced it and said - I think this is the one that you were all waiting for - and I feel as if we finally got it right.

The shots are so dense and the design is so beautiful.... hard to describe and hard to remember everything because it is just so much.  Of course, this showed you no dialog or story - which is usually the problem - but if you went purely on visuals, you would think its the best movie ever... every shot, no matter how wide had hundreds of moving parts.  It really was awesome.

Oh yeah.  Lots of Yoda and Grievous shots - and they kick ass... the wrinkles and the eyes of Yoda... the way Grevious moves... damn!

Then Rick showed a quick making of clip - it started with the actors on greenscreen, then added each layer until it was the shot that you see in the film.  Even when you know how they do it, to see it done  in almost real time just makes you freak out about how fast technology has changed.  And how Lucas has led they way....

Saw Nick Gillard talk.  He was the sword master and fight choreographer for the whole first trilogy.  Lots of funny comments from him like -

Someone asked him if he looked at the fights from the first trilogy and let that influence the style he developed for this trilogy.  He said no.  He thought the first trilogy fights were "rubbish" and he just started over from scratch.

Another one asked him about the 7 levels of fighting for Jedi's and how he developed that - and Nick seemed perplexed.  "There are 7 levels?  where did you get that?  I only know one level. "

He said his fight plan consisted of throwing out all the rules of swordfighting and making sure that anything goes.

He was a great speaker and very very gracious with the crowd.

And - I haven't seen this anywhere yet - he said he is about to do a movie that he is directing.  He said its a suspense/ thiller and will star Hayden Christensen and Sam Jackson... so that sounds awesome.  Hopefully there will be a few sword fights in it... :)

Well.  Back to the fest.

If you use this, call me

    Star Wars

    by mafu

Like many people, I was underwhelmed by the first two Star Wars prequels. In fact, I gag when I think about how much Lucas missed the boat with both films. Fast forward to three weeks ago, when I borrowed "The Clone Wars" DVD set from a friend. Holy shit... the action, the characters, and the story arc of that little cartoon network show drove home what's been missing from the Star Wars universe for so long, and I'd encourage anyone who hated the first two movies to see it. In addition to being kickass and highly creative, the DVDs set up the third movie in a gripping way. If the action and story elements in "Return of the Sith" even remotely compare to the action and story elements on the DVDs, I'll be happy. Anyone agree with me?

Lucas pours most of what he makes into his FX and sound companies which employ hundreds of people and without which, LOTR would be all claymation. If he wanted to he could have released a SW every 3 years since 1983 but he waited until the technology was where he wanted it to be. If he wanted to he could make another trilogy, topping 200 mill each but he's not going to. The guy adopted three kids for Chrissakes. So just because you're a loser, don't call someone who happened to produce something that made money a greedy pig when you're completly clueless about that person. Twat.

    The Clone Wars Cartoon Show

    by roger thornhill

Fanboys have been drooling over it ever since it came out. The naysayers have proclaimed it the way the prequels should've come out. Critics praised its bold animation and lighting quick storytelling. I agree, The Clone Wars cartoon show is indeed amazing, but I don't think it's the way the prequels should've been. The Clone Wars is essentially non-stop action/violence with sprinkles of character development here and there. It works great for the show because of its three minute episode time frame, but a feature length film with non-stop action would become redudant and boring. And to those who say it's the way the prequels should've been, is that what you expected? Non-stop action? I know the prequels are light as it is on character development, but it'd be even worse if the prequels were similar to the Clone Wars cartoon show. If the prequels had better acting, I think a lot of people would've been kinder to them...well...and no Jar Jar.

The Clone Wars show is good for what it is

    by i dunno

But it's not movie material. First of all, the art is horrendous. I know that type of art is its own style but it does not belong in Star Wars. The characters look ridiculous. Second, everyone is too fast and powerful. Mace taking out an army of droids without a lightsaber, Yoda bringing down entire starships with the Force...fanboys say this is what the films should have been because this is the kind of shit they actually wanted to see. So it's a good thing the cartoon is there to give them what they want and leave the actual story to the films.

Clone Wars is not what the movies should have been, but they're great damage control. There's no Jar Jar, so that's a plus already. Plots, for the most part, are set up for the major story arc, so the characters actually show motivation. Anakin's silent farewell from Amadala showed morer emotion than any scene in AOTC. Some people don't like Tartovski's character designs, but I like his reto-stylized look. It reminds me of the painings by Shag. Case in point, I know several people who have never purchased Ep. 1 or 2, but who have bought Clone Wars.

Heck, originally as I recall there were supposed to be ten or twelve. The story could be taken in so many different directions..............................Damn I just got a great idea for a screenplay and it doesn't require the Star Wars name. It's all mine, baby. the ones in the original trilogy WERE rubbish. Not that they all necessarily SUCKED, but the ones in the prequels are just that much better. The ones in the OT have more emotional content, but if you're just talking about the action and stuff, the prequels are lightyears ahead.

    This just in:

Star Wars" creator/writer/director George Lucas made his guest appearance at "Celebration III" this morning at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis and he talked about the franchise. About 9,000 fans had been lined up since midnight for a chance to see Lucas talk.

The event was hosted by actor Jay Laga'aia, who played Captain Typho in "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith," though Lucas funnily made a mistake saying he thought Laga'aia played a Clone Trooper.

Lucas confirmed that they are working on two TV series. One will be a 3-D computer animated series and the other is a live action series. The live action series will star some of the characters featured in the movies, though not the main characters. Lucas will kick-off the series himself. They are planning on writing the entire series and then shoot the series all at once. He mentioned Lucasfilm is aiming for a production start in about a year.

William's may have reduced himself to a whistler of the same old tunes on a lot of his most recent soundtracks, but his prequel scores have been some of his best work. TPM and AotC both had some pretty spectacular new material and some all around good writing and musical storytelling, not to mention the genius that is the score for Revenge of the Sith. Myself being a professional musician, my colleagues and I all agree that the new soundtracks are definately as good as (or better than, in the case of the RotS score) the OT music.

    by bargin hunter in 3d

Because if this isn't just a place where the .000896 of film goers get to vent their spleens, then the majority of all these post are very sad indeed. First off "kids" start opening your awarness to what movies are, they are ONLY entertainment and it 's a business. When the DEAL is made (foreign distribution, DVD sales, etc) the deal makers aren't concerned with you (the .000896) they are looking at the REAL audience, and all your down right silly aurguments fall on deaf ears. You buy the toys, you buy the t-shirts, you dress up in your costumes and parade about as if you are actually engaging in that pretend universe. The truth is, more non-geeks purchase just as many tickets, toys, merchandise as you do and they are the voices that are heard - not yours. You are the the side show that the rest of humanity rolls their eyes at. So many of these talkback 'snits' is a sad thing to read, but pretty darn cleaver also. I hope those of you who a talent for writing are writing your own scripts and submitting them. Maybe one of them will be developed, but at least your doing something more than this constant "pissing contest" on who can prove to the world that they are the world's formost authority on the "7 Levels" of Jedi fight technique...or what ever the heck it's called.

You sorry, pathetic pieces of Poo Doo need to stop whining and make a better movie or shut the bloody hell up. I was not pleased with the prequels in general either because there was a lack of breezy, natural fun that was present in the originals, but it did please me on purely entertainment levels. It's certainly better than alot of tripe that's out there. Go make a better movie, post it on ifilm and put George to shame, otherwise at least admit you like the movies well enough to waste time on this talkback!

    by banky the hack

Holy shit, we just got back from this, and there's never been a bigger waste of $80 in my life, for myself and my wife to go. Two hour waits for anything at least, and way too many girls wearing slave Leia outfit that shouldn't cut our trip to five hours before we couldn't stand it anymore. Stay at home and watch the movies...

I have to love that you got Epp. I & II moved to the Kids' Section in your local video rental store? Nnnnoooo, I'm pretty sure I don't. All I know is you're apparently pretty pleased with yourself. I just think it's pretty humorous that you gave enough of a shit to argue with the pimply-faced video clerk who was probably afraid of you until he moved a couple of videos you allegedly have no interest in seeing to another section of the store.

I'm talking about the Steven Spielberg who has delivered top quality blockbusters over the last four decades (granted, there has been some misses, but sub par spielberg is still better than most others). Guns changed to walkie-talkies or not, he is still one of the best directors alive. In the world. And if you fail to see that you don't know shit about directing. And thus I value his opinion.

    Williams Prequel scores

    by realdoublej

They are the best thing about the prequels and i stand by saying Williams has tried his best but given what he had to work with visually, like someone said, it lacked a certain 'X factor' or "oomph" in most places. Saying that though, ROTS OST was/is the only thing that gave me the fanboy feel of anticipation for EP3. I fucking love Anakin's Dark Deeds!

    "...finally got it right."

    by malx

I love how every time a new Star Wars film comes out and people realize it's about as much fun as getting whaled in the crotch with a 2x4 while Lucas steals your car, all the toadies start claiming the "next one" will do it. "The Phantom Menace just sets up the trilogy, wait until the next one! That one will be great!" "Attack of the Clones just establishes the love story between Anakin and Amidala, the next one will be great!"
Take the hint. Lucas just sits around in his office passing judgment on CGI shots and eating bearclaws. Expecting Revenge of the Sith to pull out the Prequels is like expecting a pilot to pull a plane with two engines on fire out of a dive just because he claims he can finally see the runway. Not going to happen.

But Episode XIASDIEAOI will be great, I promise!

I have to break my vow of silence.

    by fluffyunbound

My hatred of the prequels blushes before no man's, but I have to say it [and wow, this is tough]: it's starting to look like maybe, just maybe, it's not 100% absolutely stone certain that ROTS will suck. I had been as sure that ROTS would suck as a person can be sure of anything in these precarious times, but now - doubts. Little ones. Like the bricks crumbling in the guy's mind at the end of Village of the Damned. Little trailer-fed cracks - unwanted thoughts, like "Wow. Interesting look on Yoda's face." It almost seems as if there's a chance, a wee chance, that ROTS will actually be, um, good. There, I said it.

    McCallum actually said this...

    by aetius450

"I think this is the one that you were all waiting for - and I feel as if we finally got it right"??? I know its not an exact quote, but still, surely he didn't say such a thing about 'finally getting it right.' Such a statement from an official Lucasfilm talking head only begs the question: What did you not get right in the preceding two? And as I've maintained ever since I first heard this nonsense about EpIII being the one 'everyone has been waiting for', it isn't that people didn't want to see Anakin as a good, pre-jedi kid, or see luke's parents fall in love. Both of those are interesting aspects of the story to tell. The problem (for many, though certainly not all, or maybe even most) is that Lucas decided to make anakin a ten yr old, thus making his exploits unbelievable, and the manner in which Lucas handled the love story via his direction and writing. Had he let someone else at least write the love story, then it could have been one of the more embraced aspects of the series instead of one of the more polarizing ones. But I refuse to believe a love story in and of itself was dreaded; people like romances, they like to see beautiful women get together with good-looking guys. Its human nature. And that Nick guy is mostly right about the Original trilogy duels, with the exception of Empire. That one was great.
