Tribeca 2005: Lamont shadows the festival for a piece of LAYER CAKE!
Hey folks, Harry here and here's not one of Shelly's crew - but a shadowy figure of the night we'll call Lamont - now who knows if the LAYER CAKE is tasty for you? Only the Lamont knows for sure! hahahahahahaha....
Hi Harry, long time reader of your site (going on 6 years) and this is the first time I can contribute. My wife and I headed down to Tribecca to check out Layer Cake tonight, and I wanted to give my 2 cents. First off, there was only one reason I trekked downtown, and that was the director Matthew Vaughn. I am a HUGE X-men fan, and I wanted to see what he was capable of doing since he is being handed over the franchise. Also since these new Daniel Craig as Bond rumors have been popping up, it was an added bonus to get to see the new Bond in a film before he is famous.
Anyway Mathew was in attendance as was Craig. Both spoke briefly, Matt saying nothing of note, and criag said the Bond rumors were not true (i don't believe him). Anyway on to the movie.
Layer Cake was cool if you liked Snatch and Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels (i did so I liked this film as well). The characters are fun to follow, the story moves quickly but keeps you guessing, and the soundtrack kicked some ass, however upon leaving the movie my wife (who is not a big comic fan, but has seen both X-Men movies) said "there is no way he will be able to direct X-Men", i agree.
I think that he will be able to do well with the character development, however there was nothing in the movie that suggested he will be able to handle large action scenes, extensive CGI work, and fighting scenes, all of which are important in the X-men movies. I fear that we are in store for a rehash of Singer's first try at X-men, an ok movie, that looked like it was done by a person who had never filmed anything on such a large scale.
So in closing, the movie was fun, but it created more questions than answers for me when it comes to Mr. Vaughn directing everyone's favorite mutants.
See Ya
Lamont
