Fincher lines up a Sagittarius, an Aries and a Scorpio for ZODIAC!!!

Published at:  Apr 19, 2005 6:35:50 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Variety announced today that David Fincher has cast 3 of his lead characters in ZODIAC - the serial killer investigation flick - which ultimately has no true ending, given the killer has never been caught or convicted - yet it is possible he is quite known. The Zodiac killings in San Francisco is one of the longest runs by a serial killer - and most notable by the fact that he's never been caught, though the killings have stopped. Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast as the newspaper cartoonist that was tracking and tracing the crimes - and who believed he'd found the man responsible - only to find his findings to be ignored. Robert Downey Junior will be playing a reporter covering the case and Mark Ruffalo the lead investigator on the Zodiac case... This case was the basis for the original SCORPIO killer in the original DIRTY HARRY that made all of our days.

This is all based upon Robert Graysmith's two novels: ZODIAC and ZODIAC UNMASKED: THE IDENTITY OF AMERICA'S MOST ELUSIVE SERIAL KILLER REVEALED. This is easily one of my most anticipated projects that I absolutely believe will be great. Hell, I'm just glad to see Fincher going at it again.

I'd watch that Fincher direct traffic and all, but another serial killer-related movie is not exactly what I was hoping for as his next official project. Like the casting so far, though, save for Darko (I'm still kinda upset he's in Mendes's "Jarhead," too).

"It is possible he is quite known" - no, he is not.

    by salvatoregravano

What is known, however, is that Arthur Leigh Allen, the "suspect" that the imbecile Graysmith has been trying to frame for years - going as far as producing false "evidence" and coming up with "theories" that would have been laughable even in comic books (Zodiac gave stamps and letters to his friends to lick them, and he wrote using a slide projector and epistoles he collected from other people's lockers) - has been ruled out three times, based on fingerprints, handwriting and DNA analysis.

It's disappointing to see Fincher associating himself with such a lying lunatic. What's next? Will he direct a "Hitler, the Nice Guy" biography based on David Irving's ramblings?

    Leigh Allen

    by cocolopez

I was never sold either on the Zodiac being Leigh Allen- Graysmith gives a list of like 30 something items in his follow-up book on why Leigh Allen is Zodiac and I still wasn't convinced... I thought that suspects from the first book were better matches...

    by moviemaniac-7

I hope Fincher will direct this one and do it completely different from what he did with Se7en. This man should make a movie every year or so - he has the talent for it. But he prefers to get himself attached to a new project every month that ends up being directed by a lesser God. Anyhow, I'd love to see this one. (Wasn't the Zodiac killer also the inspiration for the serial killer in Dirty Harry?)

The only thing you should know about the film version of THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is, like the one before it, taken from the silly assumption none of what was told in the book happened. The problem with that is, it did. Pull up Ed and Lorraine Warren's website and see what they have to say about it, and why those who say it is false are completely full of shit.

    by jefferylebowski

ALIEN3 was compromised by Fox execs, but its still a little better than its awful reputation.
    SEVEN is near-perfect. A classic.
THE GAME is a good film, but under-whelming in repeat viewings.
FIGHT CLUB is also classic, yet slightly over-rated by drooling fanboys.
    PANIC ROOM is weak.

Silence of the Lambs is Overrated

    by jimmy_009

It is a good movie, but it's not the deep, Oscar winning picture it's made out to be. It's still just a serial killer movie. I'd rate Seven and SOTL to be on the same level, along with Portrait of a Serial Killer which is also a good one.

    by bigtuna

It's considered a classic, is one of only 3 films to sweep the oscars. I don't get the fuss at all. I didn't find it suspenseful and Hopkins performance seems hammier each time I see it. Seven is a lot more thrilling and entertaining the SOTL.

    by homer sexual

Silence of the Lambs deserved all the awards and money it made. I watch it still. And it is still entertaining. OTOH, I fell asleep watching Se7en in the theater, and again on video. Nicely filmed, no good characters. Fincher has only made one "classic," which of course is Fight Club. I would say all of his other movies have been mediocre to bad (although every single one of them looks nice).

How about the first Drity Harry movie, based (loosely) on the zodiac killer? What a time, when we had movies where cops indisciminantly (sorry, no spell checker) killed people in movies, and never had to answer for it. Anyway, I look forward to any new Fincher flick. Even Panic Room, which was a good way for him to clear the air and make a popcorn flick, after the intensity of Se7en and Fight Club.

    The book

    by rybock

First, to Salvadore; there are victims who picked Allen in lineups, friends of Allen who felt he was, and the detectives on the case felt he was their guy, they just never had the needed evidence to charge him; so saying it was a frameup on Greysmith's part is a little unfair.

That said... I highly recommend the book by Greysmith. A friend in college who was interested in FBI Behavioral Sciences (this was just after Silence of the Lambs) recommended it. I picked it up, started it about midnight, as I was going to bed, and finished it at 6am. It freaked me out, and not many books have done that. The worst part was reading it while having this feeling "he knows I'm reading about him, and I know too much now!" I've always recommended the book to people who like scary books.

so Q-tip what you on the mic for?
so about Zodiac I remember watching this ABC special a couple summers ago where they were trying to test the DNA from the Zodiacs letters and stamps. It was late at night, I was home alone and had all the lights off and this special scared the shit out of me. they did re-enactments of some of the murders, with that fuzzy, grainy quality film, the most disturbing one was when they showed him wearing his mask walking up to those teens at the lake in borad daylight. if you think things can't be freaky in the middle of the day, well you are wrong. then they would play this audio of some actor reading the Zodiac letter to the paper, with this deep, slowed down Satanic sounding voice, against the backdrop of that sketch of him with his hood on "THIS IS THE ZODIAC". I had a hard time sleeping that night. yes I know I'm a big puss. So I will defintely be in line for this out of my morbid fascination, plus boner for Fincher films.

Anyone who thinks Silence of the Lambs...

    by childe roland

...was the greatest serial killer movie of all time obviously hasn't seen the original Hannibal Lecter movie, Manhunter (the Mann version, not the recent unnecessary Red Dragon remake). It isn't the best serial killer movie ever either, but it's better than Lambs and Brian Cox's Lecter is a more believable, more frightening and yet seemingly effortless take on the not-so-good Doctor than the self-important, overrated Hopkins could muster on his best day (his performance in Lambs seems funnier to me every time I think of his follow ups in Hannibal and Red Dragon). That said, both films are good. Se7en just happens to be superior. And May deserves an honorable mention on any list of serial killer movies.

    by gheorghe zamfir

They're both great flicks. I dig Manhunter too but it has not aged well, and I'd take Hopkins turn in Silence over Cox's Lecter anyday, though I agree Hopkins turns in Hannibal and Red Dragon have diluted the character a ton, I don't let those poor sequels take away from Silence.

Another vote for: Se7en is a better film

    by coop

As far as the directing, acting, editing, cinematography and sound design are concerned, Se7en is a much better film than Silence of the Lambs. I just can't get beyond the acting in Silence, it's so over the top that it's more about enjoying watching Hopkins act than actually enjoying the movie. In addition, Jodie Foster was overly sensitive for an FBI Agent. Sure she was supposed to be a new agent but she had the emotional maturity of a 13 year old girl. She wouldn't have made it through training. At least in Se7en you had real characters. I believed them all as people and their motivations all made sense. Even the Kevin Spacey character had an evil logic that made some sense.
What was Hannibal Lecter's motivations? he was evil, that's about it. He liked messing with people and eating their livers. Please, anyone with some basic knowledge in psychology knows Lecter is merely a boogeyman, not a realistic portrait of a psychopath. He might as well twist his handlebar mustache in the film.
Buffalo Bill was the only realistic crazy in the film but who remembers him (even though the film was about him).

  • "It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again." 1. Seven, 2. Everything else. No one has or ever will do it better. "Lambs" has not aged very well either. Great (if hammy) performances but the direction is very MOVIE OF THE WEEK. Seven is just dark perfection from start to finish. Like "Jaws", every time I see it I find some new gem of a shot or creepy detail - and the script by Walker is so tight.

Manhunter is better than Silence and Ruffalo was great in Eterna

    by george newman

Manhunter looks dated by the period sure, but all of the technique, the mystery, the characters and the acting as strong as ever. The only thing that looks dated is the dress, architecture and lighting. If you can get over that (I can) you can see that Petersen, Cox, and Noonan are all fantastic. The final confrontation with Iron Butterfly playing is spectacular. Blind Joan Allen, afraid and disoriented as the song pummels her senses is better, more intense and unseetling than Foster when she's trapped in the dark. That scene was great, too, but,,,,

"The Game" is very poorly-paced; "Aliens 3" is a very poorly-directed, poorly-written piece of crap"; "Seven" is good but fails on repeat viewings d/t its over-reliance on shadows and low lighting; "The Fight Club" is very good. "Seven" is definitely not the best serial killer movie of all time-- my votes go to "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer," "Manhunter" or "Rampage" (the last of which, unfortunately, turns into a stupid courtroom drama).
