Three new REVENGE OF THE SITH tv spots hit!!!

Published at:  Apr 19, 2005 12:51:50 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with three brand spankin' new SW:ROTS TV spots for your viewing pleasure. Now, I have been personally avoiding major spoilers from the film... I didn't buy the Illustrated screenplay, I didn't buy the Making of or Art of books and there's no way in hell I'm reading the book adaptation. It always blows my mind when Lucas releases all this shit a month and a half before the film comes out...

I haven't avoided looking at the TV spots, though. I get too much pleasure from seeing a half-second of new footage here or there pre-release. You can view all three new spots by going to Star Wars.com or you can click the individual links below. I'll give my thoughts AFTER each link, so you can click on it without me giving away something cool or in any way hampering your enjoyment of these spots!

CLICK IT HERE FOR "JEDI ACTION 1"!!!

"Always on the move..." I like this one, especially seeing Grievous' vehicle chase down Obi-Wan...

YOU WANT MORE? I'LL GIVE YOU MORE! CLICK IT HERE FOR "JEDI ACTION 2"!!!

Mostly older shots from the previous trailers or the first Jedi Action TV spot, but Mace is lookin' pissed...

NOW FOR THE LAST ONE: "UNITE"!!

This one makes me laugh... the voice over reminds me of a bad Saturday Morning commerical for Nerf darts or something... But the Grievous stuff looks cool, especially the quick shot of him block Obi-Wan's attack with two lightsabers. My mantra... "Don't fuck this up, don't fuck this up, don't fuck this up..." is going strong with one day short of a month to go. What about you?

PS Be sure to check out Coming Soon to see some video from German TV with footage from the beginning space battle as well as a scene with Grievous!

CLICK IT HERE FOR THAT GOODNESS!

I like how it advertises Revenge of the Murdering Sith like it's all cotton-candy and popcorn. By the way, I was terrified when his mask was removed in Jedi. Hopefully I'll get to hear some kid scream out when Anakin gets burnt to a crisp. Yay!

It's two hours of mayhem, violence and gore, with more beheadings and behandings than a year's worth of Al Quaida videos. Do kids like seeing nearly all the good guys, including children, getting hacked into meaty chunks by monsters?

All the droids/robots in Star Wars are treated like trash. Their memories are erased on a whim, and they are highly discardable. Even though they all have high brian functions, especially C-3po. If they are self aware, then wouldn't they have a soul. Asimov would be disgusted with Lucas's take on robots. www.warp11.com, CA's finest Star Trek band! The haters will haters, the hard core will love it no matter what. The casual viewers will be the ones that will provide the true measure of how good ROTS will/may be. The haters can't do this, due to the fact that the think they will have to have the same experience as they did when they were kids in 77/80/83. On the flip side, the hard core guys would worship Lucas' bowel movements if they spelled AOTC, ROTS, ROTJ, TPM, etc. Just like in the Presidential elections, the hard core Democrats will always vote Democrat, the hard core Republicans will only vote for Republicans, but it takes the swing votes to seize the victory. . . One Month OR... No Fair Shakes

    by jollydwarf

Well, no matter where you fall on the spectrum, it's all going to be over soon enough. I have to say, though, that regardless of how good the film is and no matter what the LFL camp has said in any given media outlet, the main knee-jerk criticism of this film is going to be the lack of gratuitous 'Helmet Time'. Your average moviegoer is going to be PISSED that the iconic Darth Vader they know and have loved for years is only in what amounts to an extended cameo. That would be the sad irony: Lucas finally hits one on the screws, and all people can focus on is how 'screwed' they feel for their own "lack of vision". These latest spots tested my faith and my optimism that had been slowly building since the teaser, "KID-FRIENDLY" or not. Oh well, let's hope 'clever editing' can change a film's true nature both ways. I pray that we were supposed to get a sense of 1980 all over again while watching them. I should compare the TV spots on the OT DVDs to these, just to validate that feeling.

    by krullboy

Both your takes are good, and I would add one more "knee jerk" criticism to your discussion. If ROTS does deliver and remotely rivals ESB or ANH, you will have several SW fans, haters and hard core fans alike, that will scream "Why couldn't TPM/AOTC been as good as ROTS. . .why couldn't TPM have started when Anakin was a Jedi Knight already. . .." The reasoning would be that AOTC should have been the first prequel, ROTS could have been the second prequel, with the third prequel being Vader completing the Jedi purge. Personally, this is Lucas' saga to save or sink, and the value of the entire saga, not just the Prequels will be viewed as a failure or success based solely, right or wrong, on ROTS' performance.

And dang it, in that second trailer you can see Plo Koon asploding into a nasty ball of fire.. I can't believe that those trailers included shot of Anakin grabbing and lighting up Dooku's saber right before he gets done in (you can also see the top of the Count's head at the bottom of the frame)...Finally there was even a shot of YODA dangling, just before he falls to his discontinuitous death. Oh, fuck all the naysayers! Commericals look fantastic! And ton

    by commando cody

The commercial spots look great across the board. You can feel so much energy coming from this film it's building like a tidal wave. This movie is going to rule the box office like no other this summer. And if you naysayers want to rant away, feel free to. No one gives a fuck -- but, please, feel free to flag your impotent dicks trying to convince yourself anyone gives a fuck about your negative attitudes. You aren't swaying anyone. I just feel sorry that the kid in you is such a dead and buried, rotted-away, eaten by worms fucking lifeless carcass that you can't simply enjoy SITH for what it is: a fun summer movie that's the last of it's kind, one that from all the clips to date shows Lucas and team went totally balls out to give everyone a great picture to end the theatrical releases with. So I'd be tempted to say "fuck you, haters" but instead of anger now I realize I feel only pity for you. Being as old as I am, there was a time geeks got together and celebrated A-level production movies like SITH simply because we couldn't count on Hollywood to ever produce anything like this. So tonight I hit my local AMC and right now I'm holding my tickets for opening weekend (I'm going to a midnight show Thursday, back Friday night and back again Saturday night, too). I love this franchise like no other and I've waited 30 years for this one. And I know Lucas delivered big time. It's so obvious that haters just want to ignore it because they can't stand knowing it's true. So here's to all the SW fans out there having a fucking fantastic time May 19th. It's going to be a movie weekend for the ages.

    A FINAL WORD...

    by bubcus

George Lucas originally wanted to make FLASH GORDON but couldn't secure the rights... so he made his own space fantasy. It's supposed to be a serial... and it'll likely be cheesy and parts will be laughed at, hated, and enjoyed, and cherished. Watching these trailers, I got the impression we're in for some very annoying dialogue (not too keen on what Obi-Wan and Mace have said in the trailers... seems dry). The visuals look great and there's some good intensity. IT MAY NOT BE THE BEST OF ANYTHING, BUT GO IN THERE WITH AN OPEN MIND, PUT EXPECTATIONS AWAY, BREAK OUT YOUR LIGHTSABERS AND GO HAVE FUN!!!!!! See you in the lineups.

  • Anakins motivations were thoroughly outlined and fairly reasonable when taken within the context of a universe where the fantastic is commonplace. What surprised me the most was the amount of detail attributed to the Mace Windu character. You constantly hear about his alleged skills but here they are finally put on display. His battle with Darth Sidious was astounding. In fact, everyone seems to have their moment in the sun in this tale, I can only hope the film can match the excitement I received from the novel.

    by triumph poops!

Commando's right. This is simply going to be a fun weekend, one for the ages and one to remember as we say good-bye to something that has meant so much to so many of us. We're saying good-bye to something that shaped so much of our geek lives, our entire pop culture, and artistically to something that literally redefined cinema and rewrote the books on EVERY aspect of movie-making. SITH'S opening weekend will simply be people out having a great time: geeks celebrating Star Wars for what it is, families having a chance to do something together...Hell, it'll be the official launch of the summer movie season and that alone is reason to cheer and get out of the house. SITH will pack 'em in and for 2 hours in time, people will just be out having fun in a community experience. Well, except for all you SW haters and Lucas bashers. You asswipes will be cranky as always, but I guess that's the price you pay for being trolls with completely impotent and useless dicks creating unbearable amounts of sexual frustration...

    by droids22

I don't think anyone really hates these films we just all deperately want to see a GOOD Star Wars prequel. Why do you think ESB is the best Star Wars movie? Maybe because it wasn't written by George and it wasn't directed by George. GL is really brilliant at coming up with original story, he should have just hired writers and directors on all 3 movies and stayed on as creative consultant.
Ya I think the dialogue stinks, I read the screenplay that's out now and it's no better then the other 2 prequels. Reads exactly like a grade school play. At this point I would only see this last film for it's visuals and sound effects/music.

I want to address Lucasfilm's net distribution of their promo materials. After going through Apple's quicktime site for the last two, they've chosen to partner with AOL on Revenge of the Sith. My guess is that this was done to target the more middle-American body of AOL users than was possible through Apple's resources, and also because AOL is a paid service and LFL can get cash from running the trailers. This sucks for a couple reasons, one of which is that AOL sucks at everything. Another reasson this sucks is because all of the QT related to Revenge of the Sith has been poorly mastered. The Phantom Menace was one of the first major releases to have a trailer released in quicktime, and the video and audio were great. That was back in 1998. It is now 2005, and this new shit sucks ass, particularly the audio.

It blows the whole mystique. Actually am I the only one who really dislikes how much of the old mystique has been blown by continuing the story? Frankly at this point I think doing prequels was the mistake. He should have just continued the existing storyline. I can't argue with the money - but the old trilogy looks like it was written by a different guy.

    My two cents

    by homergator

First: You all ahte Star Wars so much, but you're here writing about it on EVERY post. You're obviously going to see it. So stop lying about how you won't be giving Lucas YOUR hard earned money when you've probably already forked over money for the book, the sipper cup, and the towel. Second: I've said it before, I'll say it again, where on EARTH did this romanticized look of the Original Trilogy come from? Have you watched them as an adult? Sure, I still love them, but they are Saturday morning, FLash Gordon esque, serials. The dialogue is hammy, as is the performances. It's black and white good VS evil, LITERALLY BLACK VS WHITE. Luke whines just as much as ANakin. The only thing the movies have over the new trilogy is Han Solo. And I'll admit that's a big thing to a lot of people. But that's not what anyone ever attacks on the new one. They attack the dialogue. "Who's scruffy lookin'?" Gee, that punch line is great...for an episode of C.H.I.P.S! But guess what, I Love it. Along with all the melodramatic dialogue in Eps I II and soon to come III. Deal with it folks, you were a KID when these movies first came out. And you can't get that wide eyed wonder out. My friend's daughter? She LOVES the flicks. SHe's watched all five (She's 6 by the way). Her favorite part? CHewbacca and Jar Jar. Go figure, huh?

    Reply to Talkback

  • I've never seen anything worse. They were even worse than modern generic-hollywood trailers, and obviously didn't have a clue what the movies were about. So to say these spots have the spirit of those old ones...it's really not a good thing.

    by fxmulder35

HomeGator is right. We are now adults...in our upper thirties to forties...and it's just NEVER gonna be like it was in 1977.

Ever try going back and watching some of the great stuff we enjoyed as kids? I used to NEVER miss Battlestar Galactica. I recently watched a whole days' worth on Sci-Fi and was appalled. I actually ENJOYED this stuff? I've REALLY enjoyed the new Galactica though.
I will be in line like the rest of the world for SITH. I intially enjoyed PHANTOM...then as time went by, less so. Same with CLONES. Though today I think PHANTOM is the better of the two. Anakin riding the cow must be the low point of the entire trilogy...but the last 45 minutes of CLONES rocked.
Let's just hope for good things from SITH.

ROTS will do for the PT what ROTJ did for the OT

    by ash_skywalker10

the OT had a more fun and adventure feeling to it, while the PT has a political and serious feeling to it. i like the fact that the two trilogies have a different tone to it, so it can reflect the era better and make the whole story arc more mythical and ancient. also, back when ESB came out, there were criticisms of how bad it was because it was open ended, and twists which were shocking to comprehend. however, after rotj came out, everyone could understand why things in ESB and ANH happened and totally changed audience's perception of ESB when looking at the trilogy at a whole. so hopefully after rots comes out, and when most people have watched it, people will have a much better appreciation of TPM and AOTC viewing the new trilogy as a whole and understanding how certain events, dialogue and charcaters turn our the way they do in the first two prequels. of course this is only my opinion, but i do hope the phantom menace and attack of the clones will be viewed as a good movie and worthy addition to star wars legacy when we can see the whole star wars saga as a whole.

    by big dumb ape

Hey, GALACTICA only lasted one year, but the earliest episodes in its run are still fun to watch. Overall not too, too bad. Taking "what" it was into account and it's TV budget and all, I think GALACTIC holds up all right overall given it's age. However on the flip side, try watching ANY episode from the 1 1/2 year run of BUCK ROGERS when they do those SciFi channel marathons. Man, OTHER than the 2 hour pilot which had some promise, talk about something that becomes teeth-grindingly awful. The second aborted season with Hawk, the doofiest costume ever where he's a alien "bird man" because they gave him a skull cap made out of feathers (which is hysterically bad)...I mean, WOW, talk about something soooooo bad you'll sit on the couch wide-eyed asking yourself how you EVER watched it as a kid in the first place. I've been trying to plow through the DVD box set that I grabbed at Costco for fun to relive my childhood and it's getting pretty damn hard to sit through much more of it...

Commando Cody and Triumph Poops, you two are a fucking embarrass

    by captain katanga

Please read your own posts back to yourselves... LOL, I mean would you just listen to the hatred YOU are both spewing... its genuinely embarrassing. YOU are the real "haters". I remember your angry juvenile posts from previous talkbacks, directed at anyone who dared to suggest that that the new film might not be all that. I just hate the way you aggressively assume the brilliance of a film YOU HAVENT SEEN, and turn a blind eye to the obvious gaping chasm in quality between the old films and the new ones. I really hope the new one is great, it will be a celebration, youre right about that. im going to try and get tickets to the all day marathon of all six films in leicester square (i'll go for a meal during attack of the clones). That said, im worried about the new one. but with you two, george lucas could force out a steaming coil onto a plate, tell you its the new star wars film, and you'd both be like "YOURE A GENIUS GEORGE, FUCK YOU HATERS, YOU HAVE TINY IMPOTENT DICKS, YOU HAVE NO LIFE, THE CHILD IN YOU IS DEAD..." and on and on and on and on and on... I would guess that 90% of the people that visit this site probably do so because they grew up LOVING star wars, "haters" included. "Haters" only exist because the new films have been such a let down. So Triumph and Cody, get your Attack of the Clones dvd out, watch anakin ride the space potato, listen to his line readings, watch the 50s style diner scene with "Deks" and a one wheeled waitress robot, watch obi wan fighting a giant fucking crab thing in an insect gladiator stadium, watch COMPUTER GENERATED storm troopers, watch R2D2 fucking FLYING, listen to C3P0 say "this is such a drag" and "i'm beside myself", watch cgi Yoda bounce around like Sonic... then come back here, look me in the eye and tell me that THIS is Star Wars

    ROTS, saviour to the prequels?

    by theshadowavenger

While some Star Wars fans will walk into theatres come May 19th thinking the final chapter will somehow polish up Eps 1 & 2, can someone pls tell me how the hell Lucas can make up for just plain bad direction? He simply did not direct his cast in these PQ films. Where's the "intensity" he wanted so adamantly from the Eps 4's cast?

Lacklustre performances, countless cuts; I mean, damn, Lucas laid his hands on a stellar cast for these prequels, and what did he do with them? Nothing is what. Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson. Common these people can do better than this! Even Natalie (can't land a decent role since Leon) Portman can fucking act when she wants to; and don't even get me started on Jake Lloyd.

The OT had a pretty decent cast, but due to the fact Lucas wasn't on direction duty for Eps 5 & 6, these characters IMO felt more alive. And that's my only gripe. Lucas is a master storyteller, and what he's penned for these movies is fantastic. He just should have handed direction to Spielberg (he wanted it!), anyone with a little more finesse.

That said, I'm going to ROTS on opening day and I'm going to give it the chance it deserves. I wouldn't post this msg if I didn't give a shit.

Read the book adaptation...response to Captain Katanga

    by roger thornhill

And really liked it a lot. It's got me really excited to see the new film, which judging from the book has the potential to easily outshine the previous two prequels. Although I'm sure the finished film will be significantly different than the novelization.

As a response to Captain Katanga...you wrote..."So Triumph and Cody, get your Attack of the Clones dvd out, watch anakin ride the space potato, listen to his line readings, watch the 50s style diner scene with "Deks" and a one wheeled waitress robot, watch obi wan fighting a giant fucking crab thing in an insect gladiator stadium, watch COMPUTER GENERATED storm troopers, watch R2D2 fucking FLYING, listen to C3P0 say "this is such a drag" and "i'm beside myself", watch cgi Yoda bounce around like Sonic... then come back here, look me in the eye and tell me that THIS is Star Wars"

"Anakin ride the space potato"---> How is that any different than the other weird animals they've ridden in the Star Wars universe? A Bantha is a giant space elephant with a fake lookign costume thrown on top of it.
"Listen to Anakin's line readings"....They're about on par with Mark Hamil's in Episode IV.
"50s style diner with 'Deks' and a one wheeled waitress robot"...Obviously the American Graffiti homage went right over your head.
"Watch Obi-Wan fighting a giant fucking crab thing in an insect gladiator stadium"...Much like how Luke fought a giant fucking lizard looking thing inside a giant lair as dozens of fucked up looking creatures watched from above.
"Watch COMPUTER GENERATED storm troopers"...in a sequence that would've been IMPOSSIBLE to shoot without them. Besides the fact that they look fantasically realistic.
"R2D2 fucking flying...C3P0 say 'this is such a drag' and 'i'm besides myself'"....Guess that's just a matter of personal taste. Don't mind the flying, but the 3PO "drag" lline is pretty lame. Then again, Star Wars ain't known for its fantastic dialogue. If you want good, witty dialogue go rent Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep and watch Bogie and Bacall chat to one another.
"watch cgi Yoda bounce around like Sonic"...which is totally hilarious and amazing at the same time. Again, a matter of personal taste, for those of us waiting to see how Yoda would fight, I guess it was either a let down or a riot. I loved it. Yoda proved why he IS the master.
Oh, so yes, I'm here to tell you that AOTC is, without a doubt, Star Wars. It's as flawed and brilliant as the rest of the series. Better than the originals? I don't think so, but it's above Jedi in my opinion.

    by captain katanga

I hear what youre saying, but... in the context of a fantasy film, banthas look real, the space potato was laughable for all the wrong reasons. As for an american grafiti homage... this is star wars, its out of place. its taking contemporary references way too far, like the two headed sports commentator from phantom menace. Anakin's line readings are absolutely not on a par with mark hamills, who was naturalistic and believable.. i dont know how you can say that. My point with cgi stormtroopers is that its symptomatic of lucas cgi-ing things that dont need to be cgi, contributing to an overall feel of fakeness. Luke's homestead is REAL, the death star interiors are REAL... all the money in the world cant make that gladiator stadium look real. The dialogue actually IS good in stars wars and empire.. its a myth that these were bad scripts. watch han and leia banter in empire. "we're all fine here, now... how are you? boring conversation anyway!". For an adventure film this is good dialogue. when c3p0 is in pieces in empire and r2d2 beeps and he replies "well of course ive looked better!", THAT is witty and amusing, its the difference between good writing and bad writing. And finally, yoda fighting being hilarious is not a good thing surely. I laughed AT that scene along with everyone else in the sell out odeon leicester square show... was that really the intended reaction? he's an ancient jedi master, couldnt he have fought with a little... GRACE? It isnt star wars, Im sorry.

The dialogue is pure Lucas, but I'll bet good money that this movie kicks major butt on May 19th. Too bad they've shown some of the Jedi get whacked in the trailers. What's the death count up to now? (1) Plo Koon (2) Aayla Secura (3) Ki-Adi-Mundi... And we're pretty sure Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Mace get to fight Palpatine. That leaves Shaak Ti, Quinlan Vos, Luminara Unduli, Stass Allie, Bariss Offee, and a few others who's fate is to be decided.

How The Trilogy SHOULD Have Been Structured

    by sean38

Episode 1 - Anakin is discovered as a teen (17-20) by Obi Wan, is already an amazing pilot (PILOT not pod racer) and is so strong with the force that Obi Wan takes it upon himself to train him even though the Jedi coucil is warry because of Anakin's age. He is likely too old to be properly trained (which ties back into Yoda's reservations about training Luke.)

Episode 2 - The Clone Wars begin and a rougish, reckless, but supremely talented Anakin shows us why he's the badest badass in the galaxy. He rescues Padme and, rather than pouting and whining until she falls in love with him, they fall in love with each other against both their better judgements. This harkens back to Leia falling in love with Han. She knows she shouldn't but can't help herself. He is charming and charismatic and daring and we can see why he becomes a leader. We have to LIKE Anakin so that we care about his downfall in the third movie. Palpatine worms his way into Anakin's life by feeding on his ego and showing him ways that he can become even more powerful, thus enabling him to save more people and do more "good". This is why he's tempted to start dabling with the dark side of the force.

Episode 3 - Anakin, now approaching 30, is tricked by Palpatine and completely succumbs to the dark side because of what he thinks is the only way to save Padme and her unborn son (he doesn't know she's pregnant with twins). The Vader/Obi Wan fight happens in the middle of the movie and the last half is Vader exterminating the Jedi while Obi Wan and Yoda race to save the twins.

Those are VERY broad strokes and I left a lot out, but that would have made for a more satisfying, adult prequel trilogy rather than what we're getting which may, MAY be at most, one good movie with a cameo appearance by Vader.

Great concept(s). I enjoyed the read. While I have a lot of hope for Ep III (as I've had with all the prequels, lol) I definitely would have preferred a different telling than what we got. I like your idea b/c it does bring into play a more mature story than what we got. It also provides more space for us to see what we've all always wanted to see (i.e.- Clone Wars, Vader exterminating the Jedi, etc.) I think the themes George wanted to incorporate into the prequels (i.e.- Anakin's fall from grace, etc.) could still have been included but in a different way akin to your story or the multitude of other great prequel ideas I heard of. It's sort of like the Matrix sequels. While I enjoyed them I wish the story had been told differently. Oh well. It's still the vision of the directors respectively and while I wish some things were different, I can only be appreciative of their efforts and the vision/ story/ movies they've provided for us to enjoy.

I used to laugh at those who argued that the prequels don't seem good to us because we're no longer kids. Whenever someone said "You have to watch them with the eyes of a child," I wanted to puke. But then my son started watching the "Star Wars" films. He's nine, only 2 years younger than I was when the first film came out, and he LOVES the prequels. In fact, he constantly makes fun of ME for liking the original trilogy better. In his mind "Phantom Menace" is the best SW film there is, with "Clones" a close second. So I have to admit the "gotta be a kid" crowd may have a point. Maybe I am just a cynical old bastard.

You're right, zacdilone. I really DO believe that the reason there are so many jaded haters, is that they want the prequels to make them feel the way they felt when they were 7. Guess what, you're not 7 anymore. I, for one, like the prequels. I'll even go so far as to say that I don't mind Jar Jar (note I id not say I liked him), and I do think its poetic justice that such a universally hated character is almost single handedly responsible for the downfall of the Jedi. I can also guarantee you that EVERY SINGLE hater here WILL see Ep. 3, yes, even the one's who swear they won't. I'll never understand the animosity so many people have toward GL. Do people bitch and moan when the average director goes back and adds in new footage, etc, for special edition dvds? Just let it go and enjoy the movies. I do.

In some cases, I think you do have to be a "kid" or at least someone who wasn't a die-hard fan of the Star Wars of the 70's and 80's in order to fit the mould of a person who can like both arcs. I actually think of them as two seperate things. I appreciate the classic style of the OT for its breakthrough and novel impact. Seperately, I appreciate the PT for its new history, special effects, and the chance to appreciate a new cast. As a kid, the OT people always seemed so much older and distant from me...as an older (but still relatively young) fan now, I feel more personally connected to the emotions of the characters. Well....that's my rambling two cents *g*

Your post is right on. Just the fact that Anakin is two different people in the Prequel Trilogy is stupid. By the way, anyone who says that people only like the Original Trilogy better than the Prequel Trilogy because we were kids when we saw it is a JACKASS. There is a lot of stuff that I LOVED as a kid (60's Batman, 80's Buck Rogers) that is definately ridiculous to me now. But Star Wars is still awesome. Why? Because the story of the OT is simple yet perfect: A galactic civil war between the heroic Rebel Alliance and the evil Galactic Empire. The OT starts with the Rebels first victory and ends with there ultimate victory. It is structured perfectly. Because the design of the films is incredible. From Darth Vader to the Stormtroopers to the Death Star to the Starships to the Weapons it is great design work. The big reason that a lot of people are getting excited about Episode 3 is because there is a return to some of those wonderful designs. Because the characters are interesting. Luke Skywalker has the classic hero arc. He is a nobody who is living a normal yet unfulfilled life when he is thrust into a grand adventure, and becomes aware that he has extraordinary powers and is the last hope for good against evil. Harry Potter? Yes. Thomas Anderson/Neo? Yes. It is the classic hero story, and it was done so perfectly in the OT. Han Solo follows the Rhett Butler arc almost to a tee. He doesn't do anything unless there is money involved. He also is on the wrong side of the law, yet has at least some ethics. Both Han Solo and Rhett Butler find themselves caught up in something much bigger and important than themselves, and against their better judgement, they get involved. Only to find that being heroic suits them (so Han probably should have died to keep the Alliance from defeat in ROTJ, but that is another debate). Because the score is one for the ages, and still thrills me because it is quite simply brilliant. Because the tone is balanced somewhere between a War film and a Western with homage to the Chapterplay serials. They are as good now as they were then. I might even like them MORE now than I did as a kid, because I see more of the themes that George Lucas was exploring. The Prequel Trilogy is just sub-par compared to the Original Trilogy. As Alien: Resurrection and Alien 3 are to Alien and Aliens. As Terminator 3 is to The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. As Jaws: The Revenge and Jaws 3D are to Jaws. It isn't childhood-tinted glasses I am watching them with, they just aren't as good as the originals. It happens quite often, and it happened to Star Wars.

  • If it wasn't for Jar Jar, I would thoroughly enjoy EPI over EPII. But know it's only marginally. I think most of us like EPII better because it's a little bit darker, and we start to really see glimpses Vader in the far horizon. However, if Jar Jar wasn't such an idiot and was the "Han Solo" of the triology, things would be very different. I mean, in EPII I cringe every time I have to wade through forced (no pun intended) dialogue like, "I WISH that I could just...WISH my feelings away." Pure cheese. Personally, EPI knows what kind of movie it wants to be...a kids' flick. EPII wants to be that, but it also wants to appease its fan base leaving it held together with nothing but a piece of dry gum and some aluminum foil for dressing.

Russman, you are a jackass. What kind of statement is that and how do you qualify it? Let me guess, you are either A) an American who supported a moron like David Kucinich for President and mad that Bush won, B) a Canadian that walks around the streets of Ottawa or Toronto railing against the "American Corporate Machine", but on a daily basis walks into a Starbucks (corporation) with an Ipod dangling from your jeans, playing songs by Rusted Root, C) a pissed as fuck Brit that wears one of those "Bliar" T-shirts, thinking that the UK will somehow change after the May 5th election, or D) a foreign student living and studying in an AMERICAN university on a student visa. Whatever you are, don't bite the hand that feeds you. Yes, America has done some bad shit and continues to do it in some aspects, but watch the generalizations pal.

I do have a general question though...excluding generational divides, what is the divide between men and women on star wars? I am a girl and love both Star Wars's arcs a ton, but most of the people I know who like the new trilogy are girls and the ones who like the OT better are guys. Do you all see this same gender divide? Sorry, this has just been bugging me.

"The American education system", yet another generalization. The quality of schools differ from state to state, city to city, and even within city. When I graduated from High School, besides English, I spoke German, and then took it in college. I am not Hispanic, but your comment on Spanish not counting is not only racist, but it flies in the face of the changing demographics of the US. Hispanics are the largest minority in the US, so despite what you state, speaking Spanish will count in the US. Also, "hillbilly" usually refers to Appalachia, not Texas. But hey, I guess the Ivy League education that President Bush received was all for naught. By the way, I hope that you get plenty of utility in the four languages that you speak. Just guessing, but I bet they are English, French, German, and Flemish, right. Well let me tell you, English is the language of international business, the second largest economy in the world speaks Japanese, and Arabic is spoken across the globe. Speaking four languages does not mean anything if they are not relevant to the dynamics of the real world. What has your nation done recently?

    by mattcg

Just curious. I had really high hopes until I read the novel and the graphic novel. The reason Anakin turns to the Dark Side, his actions immediately before and afterwards and what he does with the power right afterwards is so, MONUMENTALLY FUCKING RETARDED that I automatically took back every bad thing I said about "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones". It's the fucking stupid. I couldn't believe Lucas would just toss the entire series with such a piss poor, bullshit script. It makes the other two look positively brilliant. Supposedly he's been writing this for over a decade. How can you suck so badly at something you've been doing for so long? I just don't get it. I don't understand how he COULDN'T have come up with something a little.....smarter. It wouldn't have taken much effort, hell a brainstorming session with some actual scriptwriters would've solved it. But, the PIVOTAL moment of the entire fucking series is plotted and scripted about as well as a Uwe Boll flick. The leaps in logic are so fucking pronounced, you can't help but question it.

It really saddens me this is the case. I was really hoping he would pull it out. But, he didn't.

    by krylite

Which started with the previous TV spot where C3po says idiotically "ohno". Acting moronic as his trademark for comic relief is one thing int the sw movies, sending the wrong impression out of context in these ridiculous tv-spots is another. Even the announcer sounds familiar to those kiddie commercials of ESB Kenner toys I saw in 1980 during Sat. Morning Cartoons(when they were still cartoons!) Commercial greedy Luca$ pap with no moral or ethical regard for the kids when it's supposed to be the darkest goriest movie of the saga. Does this mean as the commercials get stupider as we approach opening day , that Lucas expects us to get "ready" to accept the movie actually sucks and not to take it "seriously" as the first two trailers seemed to suggest a magnificent pathos filled finale? What with all the spoiler laden products out there already such as the novels and games , maybe it does actually suck and Lucas thinks less kids and gamers will buy the extra crap after the movie comes out and sucks.
