Someone Loved THE LONGEST YARD!!

Published at:  Apr 15, 2005 3:18:34 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

In the interest of fairness, I thought I’d publish this brief look at the Adam Sandler-starring remake of one of the great tough guy comedies, since so many of the responses we’ve run so far have been so intensely negative:

Harry,

I also saw The Longest Yard the other day here in L.A., and I loved it. I don't usually send in reviews to you unless I whole-heartedly disagree with another reviewer, and this is one of those times.

I've never seen the original (although my screening companion had, and she loved it, too), so I can't compare it. But I can tell you that this is a nice twist on the old Sandler formula. Here he plays the straight man instead of playing a man-child. And while another reviewer thought the movie didn't know if it was serious or silly, I disagree. It starts out serious, then it gets a little silly, and a little more and a little more, until by the end it's everywhere and in your face. But it's this building momentum of silliness that makes the film work.

Does the film have trashy humor? Uh, yeah - have you seen a Sandler film? But most of the jokes hit their mark, as evidenced by the audience that I saw it with, which was laughing hysterically by the end.

I give Sandler an A, Burt a C+, Chris Rock a B, Tracy Morgan a B+. And the movie that I saw I'll give an A-. I think they'll trim it up a bit and it'll improve to a solid A. Mark my words - this will be the #1 film in the country for several weeks, and deservedly so.

For what it's worth,

Captain Friendly

So there you go. Maybe you’ll feel the same way Captain Friendly did. Or maybe you’ll just pick up the original on DVD when it’s released next month. But at least we gave this guy his say.

"Moriarty" out.

This will probably be the worst movie of the summer, yes even wo

    by spectrebeeyatch

First it's a remake of a movie that was fine on it's own, second it will be filled with "white people suck" jokes and gay jokes which are just getting boring because it's been done a thousand times now. The movie seems like an excuse to try and get Burt Reynolds some movie parts again and get Nelly into movies, but it will do well in the box office because people like stupid comedies

don't know if this guy's a plant but

it sure wasn't much of a review. basic points - it starts out serious, gets silly, and then sillier and sillier. He sort of liked most of the lead performances except for Burt. There were trashy jokes. The audience seemed to like it. And it'll be a big hit... there's the content in four sentences. What was the point of even posting this?

    $200 million DOMESTIC

Why did you guys feel the need to post this review twice? You get in trouble with Paramount for accepting all their money for banner ads then posting negative reviews? I'm not worried about what the reviews here say, really. I just want to see this and judge for myself. I'm pumped. I also happen to believe it will hit the $200 million mark, giving Sandler his biggest hit yet. If they up his salary to $50 million per picture after this, then I'll start to hate him, and only then. Sandler is king.

    $200 mil - pesos?

    by wayoutwest

If you'd said $100-120 million USD, I'd have to agree (although I hope not). But $200 million USD, you might not want to bet June's rent money on that. To get to that level you have to get the over 35 yr olds to go - and I don't see that. Plus this is strictly a guy movie.

And DevilCat nailed it - The Rock would have been a much better choice.

If a football movie had to come out this year, I wish it had been Any Given Sunday - Part II. I still love Jim Brown's character's line: "I don't have strokes motherf*cker, I GIVE 'EM!"
