Dem Dukes! Dem Dukes have had a screenin'! The reaction' Yee-haw!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here! Boy, I'm glad the word on this flick is lookin' good. I love SUPER TROOPERS to death ("Just order a large, Farva." "I don't want a large Farva... I want a goddamn liter-a-cola!") and I'm one of the few that seems to enjoy the hell out of CLUB DREAD ("You manacled me to my deathbed! You Picadilly whore!"). The idea of this being Broken Lizard's DUKES OF HAZZARD makes me very excited for the flick, but I must confess to having never really watched the show very much. I hope it's as good as the below reviewer says it is!

Long time (six or seven years) reader, first time writing in.

I thought for sure someone would have written in about this by now, but I guess I was the only geek in the house for the screening of the DUKES OF HAZZARD movie on Thursday night.

I, honestly, didn’t know what to expect, and after seeing it, I didn’t know what to compare it to. After I read the review of the trailer and the BLUES BROTHERS movie was mentioned, I realized that that was it. It is (in my opinion) an equal mix of the DUKES OF HAZZARD t.v. show, SUPER TROOPERS, and THE BLUES BROTHERS. That’s it!

I must start by saying that this was a “test” screening, the final product may differ from the one that I am commenting on.

Although I loved Super Troopers, the film pleasantly surprised me. It was hilarious. Johnny Knoxville finally doing well in a comedy and Sean William Scott kicks ass. Willy Nelson was a perfect Uncle Jesse, there’s even a scene with his “signature” little jokes (see Half Baked) and he smokes weed from an apple. Jessica Simpson was hired to wear the outfits (daisy duke’s, and bikinis) and to say three lines which aren’t too embarrassing and she does fine with that. Burt Reynolds was good as Boss Hog, but not great.

It was definitely better than Starsky & Hutch. The soundtrack was awesome, too. Lots of good comedy and car stunts and chases. The plot wasn’t great but it was a decent mcguffin, save the family farm from Boss Hog’s mining and win the local race for honor, respect, and pride. I don’t want to spoil too much.

Warning: Possible Spoilers Ahead!

The film has subtle nods to the TV show without excluding those who never saw it. For example, the confederate flag isn’t on the roof of the car for the first part of the film, it is added after their car is totaled and is given emergency repairs by a group of hillbillies. They also are unable to fix the doors, leaving them having to slide in and out through the side windows. There are also about four or five shots of the car having to jump high into the air, and every one of the situations is unavoidable.

I was surprised at how many “inside jokes” there were. When describing a doomed romance, Sean W.Scott claims “Everything was great, then she pulled a Kaiser Sose on me and like that,” opens fingers near mouth ”she was gone.”

The Super Troopers even make a cameo as University Campus police. They do a scene where they ask a couple of stoned Duke boys what the speed limit is “Ten, ten miles an hour” says one trooper, “Do you know how fast you were going?” says the other, “Eight” claims the first. When this happened, the whole audience went wild with applause and laughter, the director (Jay K-something) was there and was overcome by a big “Aw, shucks” smile and had to move out of view.

The fat dude from Super Troopers does a great part as Cooter who’s a creepy pervert who only wears underwear and a robe. He thinks that the government is trying to read his mind so he makes armadillo helmets to block the signal (there’s more to it, but I’m summarizing).

I don’t want to give too much away. I’ll just say that I hope they don’t change it too much. I hope it does well. And, I look forward to seeing it again.

If you post this, call me Zarty B.

and my sunny disposition is far from being seen, but it sounds like the Dukes of Hazzard TV movie is better than this. Wow, Daisy Duke has 3 lines, she sounds like a well-rounded character. My opinion though, and in my opinion: Stiffler sucks. Jackass sucks. Jessica Simpson is as attractive as looking at my own shit in the bowl. Broken Lizard humour is third-rate Road Trip humour. I hate Road Trip. I hate American Pie more. I love the Blues Brothers. If you're going to mention said film, then please point out something that can be related to it. Willie Nelson will always rock no matter what he's in. Burt Reynolds is horribly miscast...i think it's in IGN's Filmforce on-set interview with Stiffler where he says "he's that villain that you like just because he's cool. You know, he's hip and weird and kind of indirect." Does that sound like Boss Hogg or Burt Reynolds playing Burt Reynolds? Oh and stiffler calls the script "mediocre" so it's great to see him behind it 100%

Now that they've exhausted movies based on shows from the 60s and 70s that I didn't see, they've moved onto 80s shows, which I do remember watching as a kid. I used to like the Dukes, and I don't remember Uncle Jesse being a stoner, so WTF? They were always into moonshine! I did enjoy the Starsky & Hutch movie, which unlike this film, at least had a quality cast going for it. As for the rumoured movies based on Dallas and Baywatch, has the world gone mad? Who gives a crap?

    Starsky and Hutch....

was the least funniest comedy of 2004. And that's saying something about a film featuring Stiller and The Vaughn. Was it meant to be a serious remake with a few gags thrown in, because that's what I was getting from it! Todd Phillips is a sh!tty comedy director.

  • April 9, 2005, 11:47 a.m. CST

    sounds like shit indeed

    by blue7

Apparently whoever the retard is who wrote this review has never seen the original series. Uncle Jesse smoking weed from an apple. Stiffler making a Usual Suspects reference as Bo Duke. Super Trooper jokes! Daisy Duke as a cameo. Wow, what a lump of shit. Better still, we are treated to the presence of the load who wrote the immemorial thesis upon the fucking trailer for said piece of shit. Who would've thought a "doller" could stretch so far, DrWormblahblah? "knew this would be good...can't fucking wait". That's completely hilarious in its complete and total stupidity. Thanks for the laughs, guys.

She's Not my cup of tea. i just don't see the bif phucking deal about Simpson. Now Daisy is a part i wouldn't have mind going to Jessica Beil or Shannon elizabeth.

Per IMDB, David Koechner, is Cooter.

    by Nice Marmot

SNL alum, was in Anchorman, & Run Ronnie Run, a David Cross flick EVERYONE should see. It does say that Kevin Heffernan (Farva) is in it but no character is listed. My vote is for Koechner as Cooter. His schtick hasn't become old or tiresome for me. And piss off if you're above this talk back people. Dukes is the best comedic entertainment on TV right now. The combination of nostalgia & so bad its funny factor make it OK with me.

Common, every movie based off a TV show has them, or so it seems. Even the original Cooter, who went on to become a U.S. Congressman, did a bit part in "Primary Colors." The original Enos had a bit part in "Forrest Gump." Speaking of Enos, does anyone know if his short-lived spinoff series is available to see anywhere?

    by BoyNamedSue

Unfortunately, the KKK adopted the flag as its symbol sometime in the mid-20th Century, almost 100 years after the Civil War ended. I used to display the flag on the front of my vehicle with pride (and I am NO racist) until I was told it might endanger my graduate assistantship where I got my master's degree (some politically correct professors don't like the flag, LOL).........BTW, the name of the actor playing Enos was Sonny Shroyer (he has his own Web site, so Google him).............Does anyone remember the "Dukes of Hazzard" cartoon that ran in the early 80s????? The General Lee could fly just as cars in "Back to the Future 2" did and Uncle Jessie had some weird talking warlock creature for a pet.

    Confederate Flag

    by Aetius450

What an incredibly lame manner by which to have the flat on the General Lee. Obsession over the Confederate battle flag is nothing more than an attempt to divert leaders from the real problems and issues facing at-risk communities. Its a lot easier, for example, to rail against the Confederate flag than it is to address the nearly 70% out-of-wedlock birth rate for black Americans. I'm sort of surprised that they even maintained the General Lee name, as even remembrances to him are coming under PC attack. He did, afterall, lead an army whose soldiers (in part) carried this ultimate sign of evil.
