CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY TV spot hits and it's really weird!

Published at:  Apr 06, 2005 1:15:58 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here... I don't know what to make of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. I really don't. Everytime I see something that I like it seems to be followed by something that could be really stupid (or vice-versa) depending on its context in the movie. I really don't know what to make of the whole thing, but I do know that I'm dying to see Depp play this role in the film. Gene Wilder will never be surpassed, but if there is an actor out there today who I want to see put on the purple top hat, it's Johnny Depp. The below TV spot has new, weird footage. Thanks to Movie Box.net for hosting it for us lucky chocolate addicts! Enjoy!

    Burton and Depp

    by meburma

Depp's at the top of his game right now. With the exception of "Big Fish" Burton's been more miss than hit lately. Hopefully (and it looks like it's true) Burton has found his voice again with Wonka and Corpse Bride.

    Gene Wilder's performance as WW...

    by darkfyre

Bears almost no resemblance to the character depicted in Roald Dahl's original novel. That's not to suggest it wasn't a brilliant and entertaining performance! But 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' was one of my favorite books as a kid, and I remember how disappointed I was when I finally saw the movie. In the book, Willy Wonka wasn't sinister, or demented or prone to emotional outbursts (something Gene Wilder has always done extremely well). Although I've come to enjoy and appreciate the movie 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,' I consider it totally separate from the original novel. It'll be interesting to see if this new movie is going to be a remake of the movie, or a (more) faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic book.

    Is it just me.

    by neojanus

Now don't shoot me, I think this movie looks great and probably will be great because Depp and Burton are great, but (and here's the but) is it just me or does that hair style and pale complextion make him look a little like Micheal Jackson. He does doesn't he? Gives me the 'Willies' just thinking about it. Not to mention the whole 'wonderland' theme to the chocolate factory makes it kind of creepy in that context. I wonder if Mr.Wonka has and coke cans fill with booze...

Yeah, Depps Wonka looks pretty darn creepy. Don't think I'd want my kid anywhere near him. And Reynolds as Namor? Are we just casting him as every comic character now? Sheesh.

They REALLY needed to decide if this was supposed to be a remake

    by robert_g_durant

They keep claiming that this is in no way a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, yet half the sets, and all the costumes are exactly the same! I thought the close up of Veruca was a shot from the Gene Wilder version.

    Get smart? with Steve Carell??

    by drworm2002

What did Carell say? "They're developing right now, and they are in the process of writing the script so it's somewhere down the road. Right now, the approach is modern day. The basic premise is that both CONTROL and KAOS have fallen on hard times and are not being funded by the government. They're not getting the same kind of funding as (the) CIA. They have one last mission to try to get back on top

marilyn manson was depp's muse on this one

    by presidentevil

just in case you didnt know...visit manson's website if you give a damn, although i havent read the book, i have heard that willie was orignally more of a sinister character than portrayed by Gene Wilder, and from reading a Depp interview concerning this movie, it will be more faithful to the book than the original movie, with no disrespect to the previous film, I am definetly going to see this movie and hope it beats my expectations, since I am a fan of both Manson and Depp, BTW... if you are anticipating this movie... and are not familiar with Marilyn Manson... you might get a kick out of MM's video for "Dope Hat"...an homage to the chocalate river boat ride from the Wilder version

Willy Wonka was replaced by a repulsive Marilyn Manson/Michael J

    by salvatoregravano

Since Burton already is replacing Willy with a freak, I'm disappointed he's not using a heterosexual replacement instead. I'd recommend him this Willie W.: http://www.adultfilmdatabase.com/Graphics/Boxes/200/Front/35175.jpg

    Danger Danger!!!

    by gboybama

I'm a fan of Depp, Burton and both the written and film incarnations of Dahl's work. But, there's something not quite right about all we've seen of this movie so far. Like something appears to be happening in these trailers, but there's a disconnect. Know what I mean? Didn't think so. I'm hoping it's just awkward editing or there's some good reason they're keeping Charlie hidden and only showing Wonka in brief reaction shots. But, I'm afraid there's something rotten in Denmark. What are you hiding, movie establishment?

    Depp's Wonka channels Michael Jackson

    by hatchling

I saw the preview for this film and was creeped out beyond belief. Depp has been made up to look like Michael Jackson, with long black hair, pale face and red lips. What's worse, he sounded like him too, in a chilling soft, high pitched voice. The Chocolate factory and it's kids running around reminded me of Jackson's Neverland Ranch. What the hell were Depp and Burton thinking of when they devised the look for this film? It's a disaster.

    by 007-11

When I saw him as Willy I didn't think he looked like Michael Jackson. His hair is RED, it's cut Davey Jones from his heyday. His lips sure as hell aren't red, and his face has been done in a kind of greyish color to wash it out a little and make him look really odd. You're just drawing these comparisons because you want to see this crash and burn.

Mack, besides Ed Wood, you also forgot Sleepy Hollow.

    by minderbinder

And just because sets and costumes look like the older movie doesn't tell you anything about the script or characterizations. From what little we've seen, the character of wonka doesn't seem anything like the other movie.
