Remake of Peter Fonda/Warren Oates Drive-In Classic RACE WITH THE DEVIL in the works!

Hey folks, Harry here with news I'm all sorts of conflicted by. I love the original RACE WITH THE DEVIL - it's one of those almost movies that could have been greater than anyone associated had ever dreamed. Nearly a year and a half ago I was pursuing the rights on it with Revolution Studios, but couldn't get it. Oh well, I figured it was probably for the best, the direction I wanted to take the story was far enough away that creating a new story and new characters would be best. I just loved the title.

Now - I'm sitting here in my fortress of solitude minding my own affairs doing post DVD column bliss, when who should call me, but none other than the director that still wants to make my premise, where we chat and talk about what we're going to do - and how nice it is to be inspired by, but not tied to the original. Then he goes away - and I get an email alerting me to this article over at Cinescape that says Chris Moore is going to do a remake of RACE WITH THE DEVIL from a screenplay by Drew McWeeny & Scott Swan. Et Tu Brute? Heh. Que sera sera. I have no idea what those two varments are gonna do with RACE WITH THE DEVIL - but I wish them the best of luck. As for me... I'm not worried, it'll just mean we'll have to be even more original than planned. As for Swan/McWeeny - damn - didn't they just write a script for John Carpenter? Folks gonna get the idea they's talented or sumpin!

Not familiar with the original? Well Warren Oates plays an owner of a Motorcycle dealership, that buys a balls to the wall RV du jour and heads out with his wife and daughter, and the daughter's boyfriend and Oates top mechanic and rider played by Peter Fonda, on a fateful vacation. While camping along a river one night, Peter and Warren are outside the RV sharing some brews and watching the weirdos across the way do their naked hippie dance somewhere outside San Antonio - when suddenly they witness the sacrifice of a virgin. Scared as hell - watching a Satanic cult kill someone they race to get authorities on the case - but nobody cares. Seems Satanists are all over Texas, and they have to get the hell out of dodge. Crazy stunt car driving Satanists pull a Road Warrior for the last act, and the best scene is when they're driving along and rattlesnakes pop out of the cupboards while doing 60mph with no place to pull over. Sounds goofy, but it's intense as hell. Find yourself a copy - the original is totally worth it for Fonda and Oates!
