We get a peak at the future SUPERNOVA by way of a script read

Published at:  Aug 27, 1998 2:36:56 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Well star watchers, did you know there was going to be a new Supernova
visible all over the country around Christmas? A loose lipped stargazer
spills the beans on this upcoming eye candy in his/her spoiler rich report
from some lonely western mountain top. Be warned this may spoil your view
a few months from now.

Hi Harry,

I had a chance the other day to read the script for the
upcoming sci-fi flick Supernova. Well for from what I hear the budget is
set
around 90 mill and it will need every penny. The film is set for a
Chrsitmas
day opening and from reading the script that is a mistake. I include
several
spoiler below so if you don't want to know stop here.

The script starts out much like Alien in as we see the ship from different
views and then they make the rounds introducing us to the crew. Things
start
to progress quickly as just the ship, which is a medical rescue ship, soon
recieves a distress call from an unknown ship (like in Alien). Further
info
reveals it to be a water mining operation on a comet in a far off galaxy.
So
in order to get there they must make a dimensional jump. However the crew
can't just flip a switch they have to first seal themselves up in seperate
capsules like the sleep modules used again in Alien (see a pattern yet?) .
After the jump we learn why, if you aren't properly sealed when you de-jump
you may end up with your body melded to the stasis chamber. Well that is
exactly waht happens to one of the crew as we learn one chamber had a crack
in
in.

Now the film changes tone, quickly the crew are alerted to a single
escape ship leaving from the comet. When it comes aboard we learn that
there
is only one survivor and everyone else has been killed in an accident.
Not
long after that we learn that they have come out of hyper sapce right near
a
star that is about to go Supernova (hence the title). No worry though,
they
have plenty of time to leave right? Wrong. You see in the first few pages
we
learned that there chief engineer is dead and he had retty much jury rigged
the whole ship into working (like Scotty) and the company (like Alien)
didn't
think it was worrth replacing him before they went on their patrol. So now
se
find out thata tin of things blew during the jump, the good news is though
that one of the crew is an ex-military pilot and he is going to try to fix
things, the survivor offers to help but nobody trusts him so he stays in
the
infirmary. Now they di a scan on him and he's fine, except fro some
unusual
bone growth (hmm).

Then something happens and the star is going to go critical in just a
couple of hours instead of the 14 they had, they need to get away but they
don't have fuel and the jump engines are still down. So our military guy
goes
down to the comet to look for fuel, of which he is assured to find by our
friend from below. Now they start to trudt him and he is allowed to to
work
on the broken stasis chamber. Remeber they have an extra guy now so ther's
not enough of them. While he'doing that someone decised to check out that
escap shuttle he came from and low and behold they find some kind of alien
artifact. The survivor doesn't like that as the rules call for a
quarentine
and the Company gets to confiscate the item. he talks them into keeping it
a
secret and they are still cautious and scan the item. Looks harmless so
they
agree.

From here on out the new guy starts killing the rest of the crew one by
one and soon we learn that he's being controlled by the artifact (you know
like Event Horizon) and it wants everyone dead and to be taken back to
earth
space? Why you ask, well once it reches a populated area it cuases that
systems sun to go Supernova and kill everyone out there. It looks like
some
super advanced race has littered these puppies all over the galaxy in order
to
remain the most superior race around. Anyone advanced enought to get this
deep
into space is a threat and deserves to die. So the rest of the film is the
usual kill or be killed scenario and I won't reveal the ending (pretty
obvious
actually) the last shot of the film should be fantastic, and it's not what
you
think. Howeevr the last shot not withstanding, the script was only ok at
best
and I read the shooting draft with handwritten re-writes so it's not like
they
can change much from what I wrote here. It mgith be cool but they rip off
so
many other sci-fi films it's hard not to concentrate on that when you read
the
script.

Hopefully the film will be better than it sounds.

Well this is my first review/synopses for you Harry.

    supernova

    by red knife

Actually Walter Hill wrote the 1st
Alien (uncredited of course) and produced the first three, genius. He collaborated pretty closely with Ridley Scott on the look of the first film also. A script synopsis cant describe what he's going to do with the film visually so hold your balls everyone. I know someone who saw an hour of footage and said it was amazing.

    plot problem....the numbers don't work

    by volt

    #1, engineer dies
#2, some other guy dies and his pod breaks
#3, extra guy comes on board
lets see here...they have some as of yet unknown number of pods, and one more crew than pod so they have to fix the broken pod right? wrong...

lets say they have a crew of 5(don't nitpick this part, it could be 105 and the math still works) and 5 pods.

the engineer dies, that leaves 4 crew and 5 pods

the other guy dies leaving 3 crew and 4 pods

the new guy comes aboard making 4 crew and 4 pods

... so there's no problem. which is always a bad thing in a movie. This kind of plot problem is closley related to the phenomina of a hero running in a strait line to avoid capture by badguys in a car, instead of veering off to the side and running off to someplace a car can't follow. To create a problem for the hero to solve screne writers often resort to really smart badguys, stupid goodguys, or really stupid situations. The smartbadguy solution being the best, yet rarest of all.

unless we're supposed to beleive they removed the engineers pod along with his body, but i think not. of course this is all cleared up when people start dieing(unless the crew beggins chucking the pods overboard(is there such a thing as "overboard" in space?)when someone dies).

    Walter Hill, Science Fiction

    by dr stephen r beavis

Walter Hill directed 48 Hours, I believe. David Fincher directed alien 3 and seven and the Game. Nevermind all that.
Let's shoot holes in the side of that script. The comet ship is so far away that it takes a dimensional jump to reach it. How long does it take to get a message from that ship?
Sun will blow up in a few hours? I'm not totally up on my astronomy, but how long does it take for a sun to go nova. I'm sure longer than a few hours and I'm sure that being in the solar system of a sun about to nova is deadly, too. What are you gonna do, die twice? Stars swell before they go nova. If I remember my PBS corrrectly our sun will swell to engulf the Earth and that is supposed to take a few billion years. I doubt the last few miles will make a difference. "Whew, hot enough for ya? Ya miserable fuck?"
With the billions of star sysytems in our galaxy what are the chances that the aliens and us would hit the same one? What are the chances we'd hit the same comet? What are the chances that this script eats the big donkey dick? What are the chances that an alien civilization can zip around the universe and the only sign we see is a briefcase stuck to a comet? What are the chances that any alien civilization would supernova a star just to kill eight people? What are the chances an alien civilization would kill eight people with a big donkey dick because it's easier? Here's a spoiler, any section of a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror will be better than DonkeyDickNova.

    Number of pods

    by john carter of mars

Volt- The plot summary said that the engineer died because his pod was broken, which was unknown until the failure killed him. There's the extra pod gone...

    number of pods

    by volt

no, the engineer died before the movie opens(remeber the part about the "company" send the ship out witout one to save money). The guy who dies in the broken pod is not the engineer, because he dies when the ship sets out to find the distress signal.

the process of going super nova

    by volt

True, Stars swell before going nova, but thats long before they blow. After they swell the begin to contract again then stop until they reach a critical point they are kept inflated by whats called "electron degeneracy" where they stablize for a while. then when they reach another critical point in their mass they shrink into a neutron star and are held inflated by(you guessed it) "nutron degeneracy".
After this if they keep sucking in mass from their surroundings they reach a point where nutron degenercay can't keep them up anymore and then the Star collapses down to a very tiny radius then springs back in a huge explosion of matter and energy. This whole process could take millions of years depending on how much matter the gravity of the star is sucking in. Presumably a Starship able to make some kind of lightspeed jump would be able to calculate the mass of a star, mesure how fast that mass is changing, and recognize that the mass of the Star is soon to pass the point where nutron degenercay will keep it from colapsing. OK, enough with the physics lesson

    WHY?

    by matski

Why is no one making PROPER Sci-Fi for the big screen anymore?

Why do we have to put up with this recycled shit continuously.

And WHY do we go and see shit movies, bitch about them, say we've had it with fx movies, then instantly get in line for the next one, see it's shit, bitch about it etc ad infinitum.

I think this is a global psychological problem. Or is it just me?

    Supernova - number of pods

    by julie

It occurred to me while reading the
arguments around the number of stasis
pods in the ship that, no matter who dies
and whether there was an engineer
or not there really shouldn't be a
lack of pods problem on this ship.

It's a medical rescue ship, right?
It's its job to go out into space
and rescue people. So surely it
ought to be equipped with extra
ones for the people they rescue?
    Otherwise it's like sending an
ambulance to the scene of an
    accident without a stretcher.

As for the argument that it takes
millions of years for a star to go
nova making 2 hours ridiculous, we
    are talking highly advanced alien
technology here. It's a "what if"
aliens had the technology to blow
up the sun in 2 hours story, not a
    science lesson.

    Thanks for listening!

    Supernova

    by daniel chuba

I am one of the producers of this film. It seems to me a bit premature to judget this movie without having actually seen any of it. I have had the unique pleasure of working with a film legend, Walter Hill. He understands the sci-fi film genre, he is a knowlegable fan of sci-fi lit. He knows what he is doing. This is still a work in progress. Our attempt is to create a film much more akin to the sci-fi films of 50's in content using the filmmaking technology of the 90's. Many of the so-called derivitive plot issues outlined in the script synopsis occur over and over in sci-fi lit including the work of the greats such as Ellison and Matheson. And please do not underestimate the quality of the acting talent we so carefully put together. We deliberatly did not cast typical macho space marines. We cast great, edgy, actors. We did not cast based on the lastest big box office draw, we cast based on intelligence and ability. By the way the estimate for the budget is over by more than 50%. Believe me, I wish we had more but our approach to this familiar subject matter is challenging and risky and we are grateful to UA for taking a chance on us with budget they we have. Please wait and see, trust Walter Hill to make this cool and trust Digital Domain to make it spectacular. If it turns out bad I'll be the first to take the blame. Daniel Chuba.

    Read it...

    by the droog

I just can't wrap my mind around how lame the story ideas for science fiction have been. This is a total ALIEN/EVENT HORIZON rip-off, and while, yes, there will be some cool fx (people fusing together and the anti-grav water tank scene), and James Spader will be his signature quirky self, this has the originality of a Spice Girls drum track.

    RE:Walter Hill, Science-Fiction

    by louis

Hey! Guest What, radio waves travel to 1,079,252,848,8 Km/h. More over, the signal may have been send few hours or even few days before the rescue ship receive it. Let's say one day. I think a dimentional jump might be useful to cover 25 billions Km.Also, I know my english isn't perfect but from what I caught, the alien antifact doesn't start the supernova procede but made the star explode. On the other point, who the hell told you the aliens put their antifacts on only one comet?. Finally, from what I got, the star go supernova not to kill just a few people but because it has been set off by the alien antifact let's say accidentally. I would probably able to destroy the others arguments you said if I could only get what you tried to mean. However, I must also admit that I don't really apreciate the premise of this movie but mostly because of it's lack of originality...but who's knows the end seems to be great. Still sorry for my english...I'll try to work on it next summer.
